  After I got done speaking at the SQL Server 2008 R2 Launch Event yesterday I came back to the hotel room for a web-meeting with some of the other teachers at the University of Washington. As teachers we are always looking to improve the knowledge transfer to our students – and the Program Director found an interesting study that I thought I might share here. Below is an un-labeled chart showing the effectiveness of learning methods according to a recent study. At the top are the labels. (“Teaching” here means students teaching each other). • Hidden Loading with UDK

  I was wondering, how would I go about creating hidden loading scenes with UDK? For example, a character walks in to an elevator, the elevator fakes movement, whilst the previous floor is destroyed and the next floor is loaded on top. I assume it's possible with UDK, since it's supposedly rather flexible, but I've never used UDK before (I decided to ask this question first to save me learning it all, finding out it isn't possible, then giving up). So yeah, is hiding the loading process possible? And if so, how would I go about doing it?

• Blogger Template: How is inline style tag getting attached to img? [migrated]

  Examining a blogger template's img tag (data:post.thumbnailUrl) i've approached a mystery. An inline style tag controlling the width, margin and heigh perimeters are getting added to my img element. They are auto adjusting the images ratio to fit a smaller size. But I can't figure-out where this style tag script lives and how it's happening in my template. My template has no special javascript or jquery scripts. The full size images in the single posts page don't have this style tag. • What cars on roads game engines are there?

  What game engines are there that support laying out a map of roads and handle vehicle movement on the roads. Something similar to the basic functionality in Transport Tycoon/Locomotion. I don't care about looks (although prettier is better) and top down or isometric is fine. I just need a simple way to create maps and move cars on it. And preferably the cars do take time to speed up and slow down as they go from stopped to full speed. Prefer in Windows (any API in Windows). I also prefer a free engine as this is just for internal use. I have found CarDriving 2D - does anyone know if it works well?

• How to completely remove wicd from 12.04?

  I had issues with WiFi so I removed Network Manager. I booted Windows OS (dual booting Windows 7 and 12.04) to download wicd 1.7.2.4. Extracted it and installed. However, wcid worked properly with Wired Connection but could not connect to WiFi. So, I re-installed Network Manager which works properly now, and wicd connects to WiFi too. As soon as I disconnect from Network Manager, wicd connects only to wired. At this point, I wanted to remove wicd but apt-get returns no wicd installed, can't see it in Synaptic or Software Center, but only in Applications list under Dash home. Of course wcid icon shows connections, and resulting connected, so my system shows both applets for wicd and network manager in the top panel. When running dpkg commands, wicd is not listed as installed package. Any suggestion how to remove wicd? Consider that I started with Ubuntu just few months ago so my knowledge base is limited.

  Windows Phone 7 Design Template Expression Blend is a wonderful design environment for WP7 (Windows Phone 7) but for quickly visualizing a concept nothing beats Illustrator! I am excited about WP7 and decided that having a solid .ai template would prove invaluable. Some of the details of the WP7 UI Design and Interaction Guide are a bit fuzzy (literally) but I was able to generate some useful layout guides, character styles, and symbols. • Getting "boot error" when trying to boot from USB

  I'm wanting to try out Ubuntu, so followed the instructions for how to install Ubuntu onto a USB. I downloaded the .iso file, then the pendrivelinux 3 part process to make the USB bootable. I can see what looks like a full list of files on the USB (including the wubi.exe application and the syslinux folder). When I try to restart the computer with the USB in, I get the Dell start up screen, and then a black screen with "Boot Error" in the top right hand corner. Setup options (default) are to boot from Removable Device, then Hard Disc. USB is brand new, straight out of the packet. Computer: Dell Inspiron 530S BIOS: 1.0.13 OS: Windows Vista Home Edition USB: EMTEC 8Gb, formatted to FAT32 I've tried some of the tips in other help topics (holding down CTRL key while restarting, removing all other USB devices). I tried to reformat the USB to something other than FAT32, but my only other options were NTFS or exFAT (not FAT16 which was suggested in another topic).

• Choice of node.js modules to demo flexibility

  I'm putting together a presentation to talk about and demo node.js to client-side JavaScript developers. The language concepts and syntax are not an issue for them, so instead I'd like to get right into things and show off node's abilities that differ from client-side scripting. There are numerous modules available in the NPM registry and many people have much more experience with the registry than I do. I'm looking for a selection of node modules based on recommendations from your experience that show a variety of uses for node that are practical, broadly useful and can be demonstrated with a small code sample without requiring much domain knowledge on behalf of the audience. Neat and impressive is good too - I can throw in a couple of shock and awe items for cool factor. To be fair, top-voted answers will get most consideration for inclusion. My hope is this will result in a well-rounded demonstration of node technology.

• MEF to the rescue in Task-it

  One of the frameworks that I chose to leverage in the development of my Silverlight 4 Task-It application is MEF, the Managed Extensibility Framework. Actually, that decision came while I was at a Silverlight Deep Dive session on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA, and came at the recommendation of John Papa (Microsoft Silverlight Evangelist) and Glenn Block (the MEF Maniac). If you are not familiar with MEF, its primary function is to provide a framework for extensibility in Silverlight applications, however, what I found is that MEF's capabilities go beyond just this. • will Unity have a keyboard shortcut for accessing the "Session Menu" that appears on the panel?

  I noticed in screen shots of Unity the presence of the "Session Menu" indicator in the right corner of the top-panel. This menu drops down to offer Log Out, Hibernate, Restart, Shut Down, etc. I know the keyboard shortcuts are not complete yet. But are there plans to implement a shortcut for accessing this Session Menu (i.e., so users can log out, restart & shut down without having to use the mouse)? Further, will the shortcut allow navigation through the menu by just typing the first letter of the listed word (e.g., R for restart and S for shut down)?

• Ubuntu 12.10 Unity Dash transparency problem

  I have just upgraded my Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 and there is following problem. When I press super button to show Unity Dash I get wrong background image behind the dash box. Especially I can see part of the bottom of the screen. Also when I set transparency to top panel the background behind is not correct.   I am learning the multi-threading and timer in C# now. But it seems I can't find a good solution. For example, I would like to see how many addition problems that I can solve within 1 min. I would like my program to have A digital clock to count for 60 seconds in the top of my Console. Print a math problem in the middle of my console wait for my input. When 60 seconds is done, stop the math problem challenges immediately (most of time, it is still waiting for my input, but we will stop it immediately). Count how many correct problems that I have solved. Two challenges of the program now. a) how can we make sure the print time and math problem do not mess up. b) how can we stop the math challenges part immediately after time is up

• The danger of changing the domain of your portfolio

  So I have a online portfolio that is available at mervin-ux-portfolio.com but I am planning to change hosts since the current host I am hosting it with is hitting me with a very high yearly renewal rate. When I was inquiring about domain transfers ,,they told me that since I had not initiated the domain transfer within 14 days of the expiry of the domain ,they cannot do it immediately and it would take about two weeks to to release the domain name. Since I dont like the idea of my site being down for like 2 weeks ,I was wondering if I should start afresh with a new domain on a new host and what were the potential dangers of that ( I have the entire site backup,so creating a replica of the site on the new host wont be hard) I also wont be losing any business or work since I work full time currently but I was just wondering about the challenges in terms of getting my domain name back to the top of search results and basically getting it out there assuming I go the new domain name approach. I know this is strictly not an UX question but I was hoping people could give some suggestions on what I should do
