    Hello everyone, In the perfect world, all the software developers would work with the cutting edge technologies, creating systems from the scratch. In the real life, almost all of us have to maintain software from time to time (unlucky ones do it on a regular basis). Personally I first 2 years of my career was fixing bugs in the company that no longer exists (it has been taken up by Oracle). And probably the biggest lesson I've learned that time - despite of the pressure, always try to get as much information about the domain as possible (even if it's irrelevant to fixing a specific bug or adding a feature) - abstract domain knowledge doesn't lose value as fast as knowledge about trendy frameworks or methodologies. What lessons have you learned from maintenance?

    Ive got a project to make for a party, its called in holland a "Babbelbox". its a computer with a webcam and microphone that can be used to make a kind of video log of everyone who wants to say something about the party. But the problem is that i dont know where to start. ive made a kind of video show system in c but i cant save any data to a good format so it wont jam my harddisk in one hour full. Requirements: Record video + audio Recoding has to start after pressing a button Good compression over the recorded videos (would be even better if it can to be read by final cut pro or premiere pro) Light wight programm would be nice but i could scale up the computer power

  • Killing the mysqld process

    I have a table with ~800k rows. I ran an update users set hash = SHA1(CONCAT({about eight fields})) where 1; Now I have a hung Sequel Pro process and I'm not sure about the mysqld process. This is two questions: What harm can possibly come from killing these programs? I'm working on a separate database, so no damage should come to other databases on the system, right? Assume you had to update a table like this. What would be a quicker / more reliable method of updating without writing a separate script. I just checked with phpMyAdmin and it appears as though the query is complete. I still have Sequel Pro using 100% of both my cores though...

    I am going for an interview day after tomorrow where i will be asked vaious questions related to TCP/IP and UDP. As of now i have prepared theoritical knowledge about it. But now I am looking up for gaining some practicle knowledge related to how it works in a network. What all is going in vaious .NET classes. I want to create a very small application like a chat or something that can make me all these concepts very much clear. Could you please suggest some questions related to TCP/IP that you generally ask or that you might have faced. How communication is going from server to client. Right now I am studying TcpClient, TcpListener and UdpClient Class but I want to implement all of them so as to get aware about its working. Is Chat application a Tcp/IP application ? I would appreciate your help.

  • Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Express 2008

    Hi all, We are having some issues applying the patch for VS 2005 standard: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e1109aef-1aa2-408d-aa0f-9df094f993bf&displaylang=en This works fine in profesional edition, but not a machine running standard. We have checked it has all the pre-resequites but no luck at all. The error is saying the patch cannot be applied because another patch is missing, but again, we have checked and checked and checked. Now, the KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954961 Says Pro and Team editions, no mention of Standard. Judging by how simple it has been to apply this patch to VS 05 pro, and this KB article, we are starting to come to the conlcusion that it is the version. Anyone had this issue? Try as we might we cant find any work around

    I have found Design patterns certification at the Brainbehch. I have heard from people who passed it, that there are many Language-specific patterns questions, mostly from Java and C++. I think that this certification can: force me to improve my skills on Object oriented design and design patterns; improve and structure my knowledge of the domain; give real estimate of my knowledge, which is useful issue itself The only confusion I have about this certification, is that I have to learn C++/Java language specific design patterns, while I mostly do PHP development and don't want to switch to C++/Java. I'm familiar with Java & C++ syntax, read lots of books about different subjects with code snippets in this programming languages. I think, that if I pass well all concepts except language specific patterns at certification, it won't be very good, because this concepts will gain quite low results. What would you recommend in this particular circumstance?

  • Stop debug stalling in eclipse

    I recently installed eclipse on my Mac pro. I had previously been using eclipse on my mac book. When I run an app engine project on the mac book, it works fine. When I run it on my mac pro it brings me into the debugger where I have to click resume a few times but then everything works well again. I went looking into the debug settings and many other settings pages but everything looks the same. I don't remember making any changes to my mac book settings. The code is an exact copy on both machines. What am I missing here? What settings do I need to change.

  • Tutorials for an experienced C# user to learn C++

    Are there any good resources for learning C++ that a C# user could use, which don't require knowledge of C? I have quite a good knowledge of C# via courses in my University's game development program (in a 300 level course right now) but now I need to use C++ for a project. I would use a beginner tutorial but they are so hard for me to follow and learn the basic syntax because they start so slowly. I found a few of tutorials for switching from C++ to C#, but none in the other direction. I do have a little bit of Objective C practice from iPhone programming as well.

    I have created a VBScript which pulls the service tag, username, and computer name from a computer. What I need to do now is compile this information in a text document. How it's set up is as follows: We have an Active Directory Server, with a folder for login scripts. I have created a batch file to run this .vbs script, and the script works well so far. What I now need is for a file on the AD server, called "logging.txt", to be populated with the information that is created with the .vbs script.   • Publish/Subscribe paradigm: Why must message classes not know about their subscribers?

    From Wikipedia: "Publish/subscribe (or pub/sub) is a messaging paradigm where senders (publishers) of messages are not programmed to send their messages to specific receivers (subscribers). Rather, published messages are characterized into classes, without knowledge of what (if any) subscribers there may be" I can understand why a sender must not be programmed to send its message to a specific receiver. But why must published messages be classes that do not have knowledge of their subscribers? It would seem that once the messaging system itself is in place, what typically changes as software evolves is the messages sent, the publishers and the receivers. Keeping the messages separate from the subscribers seems to imply that the subscription model might also change. Is this the reason? Also, does this occur in the real world? I realize this may be a basic question, but I'm trying to understand this paradigm and your replies are very much appreciated.

  • How long people take to learn a new programming language?

    In general aspects, this might be a good reference for everyone. Having an idea of how long people take in average for properly learning how to code can give a very good idea on how dense or long is the path. Someone who never programmed should take weeks or months, even years maybe while someone who's already experienced in the area and know at least 2 different languages might take days, hours or even minutes to start coding. But other than being able to write code that runs, there are ways to write the same program, and it's much harder to get deep knowledge on that than actually being able to program. And sometimes languages differ a lot from one to another on that aspect as well. For instance, we should never have to worry with code-injection in JavaScript like we do in C. So, is there any place we can see some good numbers for how long it takes to learn a language, maybe divided into level of knowledge categories, languages and paradigms, etc?

  • Installation of Access Database Engine 32-bit Fails

    I am trying to install Access Database Engine 2007 32-bit. The splash screen comes up, you click "Next", then it fails with the error: Installation ended prematurely because of an error You click "OK" and another error window says: The installation of the package failed. The exact same situation happens when I try this with Access Database Engine 2010 32-bit. This production server is running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 64-bit. Before I tried installing Access Database Engine 32-bit, I first needed to install Microsoft Office 2010 Pro (Excel and Office Tools only). I tried the 32-bit version on the production server since that is how I set it up in our Dev environment. No luck. The 32-bit version would not install. I did NOT get the error "You have 64-bit components of Office installed". I simply received the exact same two errors listed above. So, I knew that 32-bit/64-bit did not really matter for the Office install for my project, so I installed 64-bit of Office Pro 2010 (Excel and Office Tools only) with no problems. I have a requirement that I need to have the 32-bit version of the Access Database Engine installed. 2007 or 2010, doesn't matter. I cannot use the 64-bit version of Access Database Engine 2010 because my SSIS package will not work with it. I require the 32-bit version. I've tried several steps to try to get it installed. I seriously think that the production server has some aversion to installing 32-bit applications. Here's what I've tried: Tried installing via command line with the "/passive" switch....no luck. Tried numerous iterations to copy the install file to the server (downloaded a fresh copy directly to the server, downloaded a fresh copy to my local machine then copied it over, copied it over zipped up) (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqldataaccess/thread/efd3c1f0-07cd-45ca-a626-2dd0c7ac3e9f). Tried Method 1 from this link. Could not try Method 2 because it requires a server reboot and in my environment that requires a long change management process. I've verified that I am a local administrator on the server. (Evidence, I am able to install other applications (office 64-bit per above)). Verified that there are no other office products that should be blocking the installation. The fore-mentioned install of Excel 2010 64-bit was the first Office product installed on the server. VERY ODD: To test my theory that the production server does not like 32-bit applications, I installed something lightweight. I installed 7-Zip 32-bit on the production server with no problems whatsoever. Here are some things that I have not tried (i will follow-up once I do): Method 2 (as mentioned above). Requires a server reboot. Have not verified that the Dev and Production environments are 100% identical. I've done a cursory check and on the surface they appear to be the same (same OS and SP version). I need to do a deeper dive to be 100% certain. I had no problems in my Dev environment. In Dev, I installed Office 2010 Pro 64-bit (Excel & Office Tools only) then via command line w/ the "/passive" switch, installed Access Database Engine 2010 32-bit. I don't know what else to try. Any suggestions or comments?

Earlier I wrote a five part blog series on Developer Training and I have received a phenomenal response to the series. I have received plenty of comments, questions and feedback. I thought it would be nice to sum up the whole series as well answer a few of the questions received. Quick Recap Developer Training - Importance and Significance - Part 1 In this part we discussed the importance of training in the real world. The most important and valuable resource any company is its employee. Employees who have been well-trained will be better at their jobs and produce a better product.  An employee who is well trained obviously knows more about their job and all the technical aspects. I have a very high opinion about training employees and it is the most important task. Developer Training – Employee Morals and Ethics – Part 2 In this part we discussed the most crucial components of training. Often employees are expecting the company to pay for their training and the company expresses no interest in training the employee. Quite often training expenses are the real issue for both the employee and employer. There are companies that pay for 100% of the expenses and there are employees who opt for training on their own expense during their personal time. Training is often looked at as vacation by employee and employers and we need to change this mind-set. One of the ways is to report back the learning to your manager and implement newly learned knowledge in day-to-day work. Developer Training – Difficult Questions and Alternative Perspective - Part 3 This part was the most difficult to write as I tried to address a few difficult questions and answers. Training is such a sensitive issue that many developers when not receiving chance for training think about leaving the organization. The manager often feels pressure to accommodate every single employee for training even though his training budget is limited. It is indeed the responsibility of the developer to get maximum advantage from the training. Training immediately helps organizations but stays as a part of an employee’s knowledge forever. Developer Training – Various Options for Developer Training – Part 4 In this part I tried to explore a few methods and options for training. The generic feedback I received on this blog post was short and I should have explored each of the subject of the training in details. I believe there are two big buckets of training 1) Instructor Lead Training and 2) Self Lead Training. The common element between both the methods is “learning material”. Learning material can be of any format – videos, books, paper notes or just a plain black board. Instructor-led training is a very effective mode but not possible every single time. During the course of the developer’s career, one has to learn lots of new technology and it is almost impossible to have a quality trainer available on that subject at that time. Books are most effective and proven methods, however, it always helps if someone explains the concepts of the book with a demonstration. In recent times I have started to believe in online trainings which leads to a hybrid experience. Online trainings take the best part of the books and the best part of the instructor-led training and gives effective training in a matter of hours. Developer Training – A Conclusive Summary- Part 5 In this part, I shared what I was continuously thinking about developer training. There is no better teacher than oneself. There is no better motivation than a personal desire to learn new technology. Honestly there is nothing more personal learning. That “change is the only constant” and “adapt & overcome” are the essential lessons of life. One cannot stop the learning and resist the change. In the IT industry “ego of knowing all” and the “resistance to change” are the most challenging issues. Once someone overcomes them, life is much easier. I believe that proper and appropriate high quality training can help to address the burning issues. Opinion of Friends I invited a few of my friends to express their opinion about developer training and here are their opinions. I am listing them here in the order of the blog post publishing date. Nakul Vachhrajani - Developer Trainings-Importance, Benefits, Tips and follow-up Nakul’s sums of many of the concepts which are complementary to my blog posts. Nakul addresses the burning question of developer training with different angles. I am personally very impressed by his following statement - “Being skilled does not mean having just a stack of certifications, but it also means having an understanding about the internals of the products that you are working on – and using that knowledge to improve the efficiency & productivity at the workplace in turn resulting in better products, better consulting abilities and a happier self.” Nakul also suggests the online training options of Pluralsight. Vinod Kumar - Training–a necessity or bonus Vinod Kumar comes up with excellent follow up on developer training. Vinod is known for his inspirational writing about SQL Server. Vinod starts with a story of a student who is extremely eager to learn the wisdom of life from a monk but the monk does not accept him as a disciple for a long time. The conversation between student and monk is indeed an essence of all learning. We all want to learn quickly and be successful but the most important thing in life is to have the right attitude towards learning and more so towards life. The blog post end with a very important thought about how to avoid the famous excuse – “I don’t have enough time.” Ritesh Shah - Training – useful or useless? Ritesh brings up very important concept related to training. Ritesh in his meticulous style explains why training is an important and lifelong process. Training must not stop at any age but should continue forever. The moment training stops, progress stops along with. Paras Doshi - Professional Development Resource Paras is known for his to–the-point writing, and has summarized the five part series very precisely. He read the five part series and created a digest summary of the blog post. If you are in a rush and have no time to read my five series – I suggest you read his blog post. Training Resources I am often asked what the best resources for learning new technology are. This is the most difficult question EVER. There are plenty of good training resources available. When it is about training our needs are different, our preference of learning is different and we all have an opinion. Additionally, we all are located in different geographic locations worldwide and there is no way one solution will fit all. However, let me list a few of the training resources which I have built so far and you can consume them if you find it relevant to your need.
