• Social Targeting: This One's Just for You

  Think of social targeting in terms of the archery competition we just saw in the Olympics. If someone loaded up 5 arrows and shot them straight up into the air all at once, hoping some would land near the target, the world would have united in laughter. But sadly for hysterical YouTube video viewing, that’s not what happened. The archers sought to maximize every arrow by zeroing in on the spot that would bring them the most points. Marketers have always sought to do the same. But they can only work with the tools that are available. A firm grasp of the desired target does little good if the ad products aren’t there to deliver that target. On the social side, both Facebook and Twitter have taken steps to enhance targeting for marketers. And why not? As the demand to monetize only goes up, they’re quite motivated to leverage and deliver their incredible user bases in ways that make economic sense for advertisers. You could target keywords on Twitter with promoted accounts, and get promoted tweets into search. They would surface for your followers and some users that Twitter thought were like them. Now you can go beyond keywords and target Twitter users based on 350 interests in 25 categories. How does a user wind up in one of these categories? Twitter looks at that user’s tweets, they look at whom they follow, and they run data through some sort of Twitter secret sauce. The result is, you have a much clearer shot at Twitter users who are most likely to welcome and be responsive to your tweets. And beyond the 350 interests, you can also create custom segments that find users who resemble followers of whatever Twitter handle you give it. That means you can now use boring tweets to sell like a madman, right? Not quite. This ad product is still quality-based, meaning if you’re not putting out tweets that lead to interest and thus, engagement, that tweet will earn a low quality score and wind up costing you more under Twitter’s auction system to maintain. That means, as the old knight in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” cautions, “choose wisely” when targeting based on these interests and categories to make sure your interests truly do line up with theirs. On the Facebook side, they’re rolling out ad targeting that uses email addresses, phone numbers, game and app developers’ user ID’s, and eventually addresses for you bigger brands. Why? Because you marketers asked for it. Here you were with this amazing customer list but no way to reach those same customers should they be on Facebook. Now you can find and communicate with customers you gathered outside of social, and use Facebook to do it. Fair to say such users are a sensible target and will be responsive to your message since they’ve already bought something from you. And no you’re not giving your customer info to Facebook. They’ll use something called “hashing” to make sure you don’t see Facebook user data (beyond email, phone number, address, or user ID), and Facebook can’t see your customer data. The end result, social becomes far more workable and more valuable to marketers when it delivers on the promise that made it so exciting in the first place. That promise is the ability to move past casting wide nets to the masses and toward concentrating marketing dollars efficiently on the targets most likely to yield results.

• Arcball Problems with UDK

  I'm trying to re-create an arcball example from a Nehe, where an object can be rotated in a more realistic way while floating in the air (in my game the object is attached to the player at a distance like for example the Physics Gun) however I'm having trouble getting this to work with UDK. I have created an LGArcBall which follows the example from Nehe and I've compared outputs from this with the example code. I think where my problem lies is what I do to the Quaternion that is returned from the LGArcBall. Currently I am taking the returned Quaternion converting it to a rotation matrix. Getting the product of the last rotation (set when the object is first clicked) and then returning that into a Rotator and setting that to the objects rotation.   I'm a noob and English is not my mothertongue, so please bear with me! I'm generating a map for a Sidescroller out of a 2D-array. That is, the array holds different values and I create blocks based on that value. Not sure if I need it somewhere down the road. So, the map is 16384 blocks wide. One block is 16 pixels in size. • Test your internet connection - Emtel Fixed Broadband

  Already at the begin of April, I had a phone conversation with my representative at Emtel Ltd. about some upcoming issues due to the ongoing construction work in my neighbourhood. Unfortunately, they finally raised the house two levels above ours, and of course this has to have a negative impact on the visibility between the WiMAX outdoor unit on the roof and the aimed access point at Medine. So, today I had a technical team here to do a site survey and to come up with potential solutions. Short version: It doesn't look good after all. The site survey Well, the two technicians did their work properly, even re-arranged the antenna to check the connection with another end point down at La Preneuse. But no improvements. Looks like we are out of luck since the construction next door hasn't finished yet and at the moment, it even looks like they are planning to put at least one more level on top. I really wonder about the sanity of the responsible bodies at the local district council. But that's another story. Anyway, the outdoor unit was once again pointed towards Medine and properly fixed with new cable guides (air from the sea and rust...). Both of them did a good job and fine-tuned the reception signal to a mere 3 over 9; compared to the original 7 over 9 I had before the daily terror started. The site survey has been done, and now it's up to Emtel to come up with (better) solutions. Well, I wouldn't mind to have an unlimited, symmetric 3G/UMTS or even LTE connection. Let's see what they can do... Testing the connection There are several online sites available which offer you to check certain aspects of your internet connection. Personally, I'm used to speedtest.net and it works very well. I think it is good and necessary to check your connection from time to time, and only a couple of days ago, I posted the following on Emtel's wall at Facebook (21.05.2013 - 14:06 hrs): Dear Emtel, could you eventually provide an answer on the miserable results of SpeedTest? I chose Rose Hill (Hosted by Emtel Ltd.) as testing endpoint... Sadly, no response to this. Seems that the marketing department is not willing to deal with customers on Facebook. Okay, over at speedtest.net you can use their Flash-based test suite to check your connection to quite a number of servers of different providers world-wide. It's actually very interesting to see the results for different end points and to compare them to each other. The results Following are the results of Rose Hill (hosted by Emtel) and respectively Frankfurt, Germany (hosted by Vodafone DE): Speedtest.net result of 30.05.2013 between Flic en Flac and Rose Hill, Mauritius (Emtel - Fixed Broadband) Speedtest.net result of 30.05.2013 between Flic en Flac and Frankfurt, Germany (Emtel - Fixed Broadband) Luckily, the results are quite similar in terms of connection speed; which is good. I'm currently on a WiMAX tariff called 'Classic Browsing 2', or Fixed Broadband as they call it now, which provides a symmetric line of 768 Kbps (or roughly 0.75 Mbps). In terms of downloads or uploads this means that I would be able to transfer files in either direction with approximately 96 KB/s. Frankly speaking, thanks to compression, my choice of browser and operating system I usually exceed this value and I have download rates up to 120 KB/s - not too bad after all. Only the ping times are a little bit of concern. Due to the difference in distance, or better said based on the number of hubs between the endpoints, they indicate the amount of time that it takes to send a package from your machine to the remote server and get a response back. A lower value is better, and usually the ping is less than 300 ms between Mauritius and Europe. The alternatives in Mauritius Not sure whether I should note this done because for my requirements there are no alternatives to Emtel WiMAX at the moment. It would be great to have your opinion on the situation of internet connectivity in Mauritius. Are there really alternatives? And if so, what are the conditions?

• Modernizr Rocks HTML5

  HTML5 is a moving target.  At the moment, we don't know what will be in future versions.  In most circumstances, this really matters to the developer. When you're using Adobe Air, you can be reasonably sure what works, what is there, and what isn't, since you have a version of the browser built-in. With Metro, you can assume that you're going to be using at least IE 10.   If, however,  you are using HTML5 in a web application, then you are going to rely heavily on Feature Detection.  Feature-Detection is a collection of techniques that tell you, via JavaScript, whether the current browser has this feature natively implemented or not Feature Detection isn't just there for the esoteric stuff such as  Geo-location,  progress bars,  <canvas> support,  the new <input> types, Audio, Video, web workers or storage, but is required even for semantic markup, since old browsers make a pigs ear out of rendering this.  Feature detection can't rely just on reading the browser version and inferring from that what works. Instead, you must use JavaScript to check that an HTML5 feature is there before using it.  The problem with relying on the user-agent is that it takes a lot of historical data  to work out what version does what, and, anyway, the user-agent can be, and sometimes is, spoofed. The open-source library Modernizr  is just about the most essential  JavaScript library for anyone using HTML5, because it provides APIs to test for most of the CSS3 and HTML5 features before you use them, and is intelligent enough to alter semantic markup into 'legacy' 'markup  using shims  on page-load  for old browsers. It also allows you to check what video Codecs are installed for playing video. It also provides media queries  and conditional resource-loading (formerly YepNope.js.).  Generally, Modernizr gives you the choice of what you do about browsers that don't support the feature that you want. Often, the best choice is graceful degradation, but the resource-loading feature allows you to dynamically load JavaScript Shims to replace the standard API for missing or defective HTML5 functionality, called 'PolyFills'.  As the Modernizr site says 'Yes, not only can you use HTML5 today, but you can use it in the past, too!' The evolutionary progress of HTML5  requires a more defensive style of JavaScript programming where the programmer adopts a mindset of fearing the worst ( IE 6)  rather than assuming the best, whilst exploiting as many of the new HTML features as possible for the requirements of the site or HTML application.  Why would anyone want the distraction of developing their own techniques to do this when  Modernizr exists to do this for you? • How to make a stack stable? Need help for an explicit resting contact scheme (2-dimensional)

  Previously, I struggle with the sequential impulse-based method I developed. Thanks to jedediah referring me to this paper, I managed to rebuild the codes and implement the simultaneous impulse based method with Projected-Gauss-Seidel (PGS) iterative solver as described by Erin Catto (mentioned in the reference of the paper as [Catt05]). So here's how it currently is: The simulation handles 2-dimensional rotating convex polygons. Detection is using separating-axis test, with a SKIN, meaning closest points between two polygons is detected and determined if their distance is less than SKIN. To resolve collision, simultaneous impulse-based method is used. It is solved using iterative solver (PGS-solver) as in Erin Catto's paper. Error-correction is implemented using Baumgarte's stabilization (you can refer to either paper for this) using J V = beta/dt*overlap, J is the Jacobian for the constraints, V the matrix containing the velocities of the bodies, beta an error-correction parameter that is better be < 1, dt the time-step taken by the engine, and overlap, the overlap between the bodies (true overlap, so SKIN is ignored). However, it is still less stable than I expected :s I tried to stack hexagons (or squares, doesn't really matter), and even with only 4 to 5 of them, they would swing! Also note that I am not looking for a sleeping scheme. But I would settle if you have any explicit scheme to handle resting contacts. That said, I would be more than happy if you have a way of treating it generally (as continuous collision, instead of explicitly as a special state). Ideas I have tried: Using simultaneous position based error correction as described in the paper in section 5.3.2, turned out to be worse than the current scheme. If you want to know the parameters I used: Hexagons, side 50 (pixels) gravity 2400 (pixels/sec^2) time-step 1/60 (sec) beta 0.1 restitution 0 to 0.2 coeff. of friction 0.2 PGS iteration 10 initial separation 10 (pixels) mass 1 (unit is irrelevant for now, i modified velocity directly<-impulse method) inertia 1/1000 Thanks in advance! I really appreciate any help from you guys!! :) EDIT In response to Cholesky's comment about warm starting the solver and Baumgarte: Oh right, I forgot to mention! I do save the contact history and the impulse determined in this time step to be used as initial guess in the next time step. As for the Baumgarte, here's what actually happens in the code. Collision is detected when the bodies' closest distance is less than SKIN, meaning they are actually still separated. If at this moment, I used the PGS solver without Baumgarte, restitution of 0 alone would be able to stop the bodies, separated by a distance of ~SKIN, in mid-air! So this isn't right, I want to have the bodies touching each other. So I turn on the Baumgarte, where its role is actually to pull the bodies together! Weird I know, a scheme intended to push the body apart becomes useful for the reverse. Also, I found that if I increase the number of iteration to 100, stacks become much more stable, though the program becomes so slow. UPDATE Since the stack swings left and right, could it be something is wrong with my friction model? Current friction constraint: relative_tangential_velocity = 0

  Just recently I read a great blog post by David Darling, the founder of Codemasters: http://www.develop-online.net/blog/347/Jurassic-consoles-could-become-extinct. In the blog post he talks about how traditional retail games are experiencing a downfall thanks to the increasing popularity of digital distribution. I personally think of retail games as being relics of the past. It does not really make much sense to still keep distributing boxed games when the same game can be elegantly downloaded and updated over the air through a digital distribution channel. The world is not all rainbows, however. One big issue with mixing digital distribution with boxed retail games is that resellers will not condone you selling your game for 10€ digitally while their selling the same game for 70€. The only way to get around this issue is to move to full digital distribution. This has the added benefit of minimizing piracy as the game can be tightly bound to the service you downloaded the game from. Many players are, however, complaining about not being able to play the games offline. Having games tightly bound to the internet is a problem when games are bought from a retailer as we tend to expect that once we have the product we can use it anywhere because we physically own it. The truth is that we don’t actually own the product. Instead, the typical EULA actually states that we only have a license to use the product. We’re not, for instance, allowed to disassemble the product, which the owner is indeed permitted to do. Digital distribution allows us to provide games as services, instead of selling them as standalone products. This means that for a service to work you have to be connected to the internet but you still have the same rights to use the product. It’s really straightforward; if you downloaded a client from the internet you are expected to have an internet connection so you’re able to connect to the server. A game distributed digitally that is built using a client-server architecture has the added benefit of allowing you to play anywhere as long as you have the client installed and you are able to log in with your user information. Your save games can be backed up and your game can continue anywhere. Another development we’re seeing in the gaming industry is the increasing popularity of free-to-play games. These are games that let you play for free but allow you to boost your gaming experience with real world money. The nature of these games is that players are constantly rewarded with new content and the game can evolve according to their way of playing and their wishes can be incorporated into the product. Free-to-play games can quickly gain a large player basis and monetization is done by providing players valuable things to buy making their gaming experience more fun. I am personally very excited about free-to-play games as it’s possible to start building the game together with your players and there is no need to work on the game for 5 years from start to finish and only then see if it’s actually something the players like. • Problem with bluetooth on android 2.1 (samsung spica i5700) where pairing works but connection does

  I have a Samsung Spica i5700 which I already have updated to Android 2.1. I am using the phone with an application called Run.GPS (http://www.rungps.net). This application logs data such as GPS position, route, speed, bearing etc. It can also log heartrate provided the user has a Zephyr HxM bluetooth heart rate monitor ("HxM"), which I do have. I can pair the HxM to the phone through the standard bluetooth utility. I'm prompted for the PIN, which I enter and the device is shown as 'Paired but not connected'. In the Run.GPS application itself, I click on 'Connect Heartrate Monitor'. This times out after about 30 seconds and the error message is 'Could not connect to heartrate monitor. Please try other settings'. I used a friend's HTC Windows Mobile as a control device to see if the HxM works there. It does. The Run.GPS application automatically sets the baud rate (initially to 9600 IIRC, though the connection also worked with higher baud rates) and it is possible to choose between various COM ports as well as a .Net COM port. I did some testing on my Spica Android, to try to find out why the bluetooth connection doesn't work. Below are some log files that I connected over adb when I clicked on 'Connect to Heartrate Monitor' in the Run.GPS application. I would be interested in any tips (including if I'm posting to the wrong forum here ;-)) - whether or not it's possible to experiment with the baud rate in Android etc. I still don't know if the problem is with the Run.GPS application (I've posted already on the development forum there) or with Android 2.1. I checked out another application - Endomondo - which is also a sport tracking application which supports heartrate monitor only with the HxM. There, what looked like exactly the same error occurred - I clicked on 'Connect Zephyr HxM'. For a few seconds I was shown the 'Connecting...' status, but then it timed out into 'Not Connected'. I'm thus tending towards looking at Android for the problem. I think it should be used some thing like: uFuncReturnValue = RegQueryValueExA ( hRegistry, "\\DosDevices\\J:", NULL, NULL, (LPBYTE) &structVal, &dwSize ); But something is wrong here because the code compiles successfully but when I execute it I get a message: The program '(128) myProgram.exe: Native' has exited with code 1 (0x1). • Can't capture https traffic with Fiddler and Firefox (works with IE)

  I am trying to debug an asp.net app using Firefox. Firefox tries to connect to https://www.paypal.com and I get "Secure Connection Failed" error (Error code: sec_error_bad_signature). I installed Fiddler's cert in Firefox and the local computer and current user Cert stores. I set up the manual proxy in FF to 127.0.0.1 and port 8888 and for all protocols. Fiddler captures http traffic but gives an error with https traffic. Fiddler captures https from IE fine. What's the problem? (Is FiddlerHook FF extension needed and what setting should it be using: auto, disabled or Force traffic to Fiddler?)

  Is it possible programmatically to discover the exported names (globals, entry points, whatever) in a Windows DLL file without implementing a parser for the binary executable file format itself? I know there are tools to do this (though no open source ones I've found), but I'm curious whether there is a Windows API to accomplish the same thing or whether such tools operate merely by examining the binary file directly. I suspect there is an API for .NET libraries: if that's the case then is there a similar one for native DLLs? Edit: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1128150 is basically an exact duplicate. The answer there is roughly "there is no API, but you can hack it using LoadLibraryEx() and navigating a few resulting data structures". Edit: I was able to use the accepted answer at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1128150 to create a quick DLL dumper with Python and ctypes that works.

• C# Open Source/Free Social Networking SDK

  I am currently gathering some technology requirements for a site that will be a social network based. I don't want to re-invent the wheel so i am looking for some type of SDK or collection of tools that can provide me with a way of creating/managing a social network. I understand that no framework will probably fit my exact needs so I am also looking for a flexible/extendable framework. An example extension point would be allowing the user to provide sub networks, maybe a global network that could be sub classified as work and friends. Beyond that it would also be nice to somehow be able to import contacts from other networking sites (Facebook, Linked In, etc). My current technology suite will more than likely consist of the following: IIS 7.0 WCF Data Services SQL Server 2006 ASP.NET front end. So my two questions are 1) C# Open Source Social Network SDK 2) C# Open Source Social Netowrk APIs (facebook, linked in, etc) If there is any more information you may need please let me know.

  Hello, I have a android webservice client application. I am trying to use the java standard WS library support. I have stripped the application down to the minimum, as shown below, to try and isolate the issue. The two classes tempConvertSoap and TempConvet() are generated by wsimport. I am also using several libraries from javax.jws.. and javax.xml.ws.. Of course the application compiles without error and loads correctly. I know the application is running becouse my "try/catch" routine is successfully catching the error and printing it out. I have taken this same application and created a standard java client application and it works fine -- of course with all of the android stuff taken out. What would be a good debug strategy? What methods and techniques would you recommend I try and isolate the problem? I am thinking that there is some sort of Dalvik VM incompatibility that is causing the TempConvert class not to load. TempConvert is an interface class that references a lot of very tricky webservice attributes. Any help with debug strategies would be gladly appreciated. Thanks for the help, Steve

• WPF HwndHost keyboard focus

  The chart area in the screenshot is a HwndHost control which hosts a native Win32 window (with it's own registered WNDCLASS) implemented in C++/CLI and drawn with Direct2D. The HwndHost is hosted in a WPF Border control. The problem I have is that I can't set the keyboard focus to the hosted Win32 window. I want the focus to move to the hosted Win32 window when the used clicks on the chart area. I tried calling SetFocus on WM_LBUTTONDOWN, but that screws app the focus in the rest of the application. Currently, even if I click on the Win32 window, the focus remains on the tree-view on the left, and if I press the up/down cursor keys, the tree-view will get them, not the chart window. How do I make the hosted Win32 window receive keyboard input from when the user clicks on the chart area, until it clicks on another control (like the tree-view, or the toolbar)?
