• Career Shifters: How to compete with IT/ComSci graduates

  I am wondering what are the chances of a career shifter (mid 20's), who have maybe 3-6 months programming experience vs. younger fresh IT/Com Sci graduates. You see, even though I really love programming (Java/J2EE), but nobody gives me a feedback when I apply online. maybe because they preferred IT/ComSci graduates vs a career shifter like me.. So can you advice on how to improve my chance on being hired. How can i get a real-job programming experince if nobody is hiring me. I can make my own projects (working e-commerce site blah blah) but it is still different from the real job. And my codes are working but it still needs a lot of improvement and no one can tell me how to improve it because no one sees it (because I'm doing it alone?). Do you know any open source websites (java/j2ee/jee) / online home-based jobs who accepts java/j2ee/jee trainees.. Thank you very much

  I have a mybook live western digital 1TB hard disk connected to fritzbox 7270 router in office. When I am in the office, I can mount this drive to ubuntu since I have added to the etc/fstab file: //192.168.178.30/user /home/user/DISK cifs auto,iocharset=utf8,user=user%password 0 0 Is there a similar, easy & safe way, to do the same when I am out of the office using the static IP of the fritzbox router? I have already added tcp port forwarding in the router for ports 8080 (to 80 of the disk) and 8443 (to 443 of the disk). Thank you in advance

• What happened to my files?

  After a successful upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 a gradual deterioration occurred -- my laptop became unstable with updates -- I corrected the Aspell file, only to have another appear, I sought but I was blocked out. Had an idea, but resolved one that another problem appeared -- going from bad to worse -- I re-installed windows Vista and Ubuntu 11.10 in the original partitions. Window called it Windows Old and I had no problems recovering my files there - Ubuntu decided it is going to make a new Home directory -- . the questions is where did these files go to after re-installation -- are they deleted? If so That's fine duplicates are in Ubuntu 1 by synchronization - I can only download one file at a time!

  The <link> tag appears to have many uses aside from stylesheets. For example the W3 suggest using it for previous/next/index pages. I know that Opera also has a Navigation toolbar that will show links when present, including Home, Index, Contents, Previous, Next, Copyright, Author and more. (I doubt it is actually used by more than a handful of people.) Are there any other attributes that are useful, or other uses for the ones above? What about SEO benefit?

• Embeding a generic google search with autocomplete - not a custom site search

  Most people's home page is google.com. My homepage is just a custom html page hosted on my computer. I do this because I am a web developer, and I have several projects that I work on a one time, so I like to have quick links to all of them. On that page I usually just have a Link to google.com for when I want to search. But below all of my quick links, I want to add a google search box (with Autocompletions). I first used a simple iframe to embed google.com into the page, but then my search results were confined to that iframe. I wanted to search for something, then my results would open in a new tab. I then came across this code snippet but it doesn't have Autocompletions: http://www.refactory.org/s/google_search/view/2 How can I add Autocompletions to this? Or is there a better way of doing it? • RTOS experience

  I have been working as an embedded software engineer on mostly 8 bit micro-controller firmware and desktop/mobile applications development for the past five years. My work on a WinCE project (in which I got introduced to .NET CF) was short lived. I did use core APIs for interrupt processing, peripheral communication, etc...but again, not exactly a pure RTOS environment. In order to get together more solid experience for growing more in the embedded field, I want to work more with RTOSes. Will buying an evaluation board with an RTOS and putting together a project at home be regarded as a good experience or will an online course be more useful? I am just not clear as to what will be regarded as good experience. Any suggestions or directions will greatly help me. I have a passion for the field but just a need a point in the right direction.

• XBMC using a lot of CPU when fullscreen

  I'm just starting to try out XBMC (from the ubuntu repo) and noticed that it's using a lot of CPU when running fullscreen, even when I'm not playing a movie. There's a definite lag even on the home page with the scrolling footer. I've toggled the option to use it in windowed mode and it seems to be a lot more responsive. The footer lag seems to be gone. Does anyone know why this is happening? I would have thought that running fullscreen would have used less resources.

• What scripts get run on session start and end?

  I want to mount and unmount an encrypted partition just like ecryptfs works with the home partition. Where can I put my commands so that they get executed upon session start and session end (the important part is the unmounting when I log out). UPDATE: For the session start I'm using .gnomerc and it does what I want. For the session end I've found no solution. I had a look at the sources of ecryptfs and it looks quite complicated. It's a pity that nobody thought about creating something analog to .bash_logout.

• how to fix error when authenticating in U1

  Like other users, when authenticating in U1 I get this error: Method "CreateItem" with signature "a{sv}(oayay)b" on interface "org.freedesktop.Secret.Collection" doesn't exist. And in /var/log/auth.log: gnome-keyring-daemon[4793]: egg_symkey_generate_simple: assertion `iterations >= 1' failed gnome-keyring-daemon[4793]: couldn't prepare to write out keyring: /home/yann/.gnome2/keyrings/login_1.keyring So I tried to move "login.keyring". I typed no password for the security when logging into U1, accepted non secured way to save passwords. And a message told me the operation successfully completed (in French). But, sync did not work. And u1sdtool --status returned this: State: AUTH_FAILED connection: With User With Network description: auth failed is_connected: False is_error: True is_online: False queues: WORKING I'm sorry U1 doesn't work anymore; it was really useful to me. • Has an open console any chance to give more strength to the indie game world ?

  I have heard about the GPX, but i don't really think the embedded market is mature enough in terms of performance, but what about the home console market ? I'm not talking about last-generation graphics, because that would be economically impossible, but what about an hardware as fast as a playstation 2/Xbox 1/Gamecube ? For games, the trick would be to ask some editors to recompile their best sellers for the new machine: those games being from the PSX age or even older console generations, I think this would have a very low cost job and they could still make some good profit, but I need to know if this is doable technically, considering the architecture which can be quite exotic. Do you think it would be a viable project to talk about to investors ?

There's only one strategy in the game - deciding how efficiently spend point on enhancement (see formulas). I've seen many games like this, but it seems that most don't have a home page or have an unknown publisher. • Why isn't .profile sourced on login to LXDE?

  I switched recently from GNOME to LXDE and since then my .profile file hasn't been sourced on login. I found out that my PATH variable doesn't include ~/bin anymore. However, my .profile file includes PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH" while PATH's content is /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games. Is it intended that LXDE doesn't read this file on login? If yes, what file should I use to add the bin folder to the PATH variable? If not, to what package should I report a bug?

• How to tell what part of a 3D cube was touched

  I am writing a rather simple android game and I am implementing Open GL to draw a 3D cube that spins upon the X, Y and Z axis and I need to know where the user has clicked on the texture of the cube. The texture is a simple square bitmap (100x100) that has a smaller square in the center. I need to know if the user touches the inner square. As well was tell which face of the cube the user touches. Does anyone know how this can be accomplished if not can anyone give some pseudo code on how to tell where the ray correlates to the texture? Or at least point me in the right direction. • Does it makes sense to backup the whole partition as opposed to their files?

  I know that on Windows it's quite futile to try to backup the "C:" partition file-wise and that's why a full partition backup is needed. Is it OK to backup a the root Linux partition file-wise? Are there any downsides? Clarification Here, I don't care about advantages of partial backups. I'm going to do additional separate backups of /home, etc. What I'm interested in here is the comparison of backup of all files from / vs. backup of the whole partition as device What are the advantages of something like dd if=/dev/sda1 ...?

• Setting umask globally

  I am using a private user group setup, i.e. a user foo's home directory is owned by foo:foo, not foo:users. For this to work, I need to set the umask to 002 globally. After a quick grep -RIi umask /etc/*, it seemed for a moment that modifying the UMASK entry in /etc/login.defs should do the trick. It does, too -- but only for console logins. If I log in to my desktop, and open a terminal there, I still get to see the default umask 022. Same goes for files created from apps started through the menu. Apparently, the display manager (or whatever X11 component responsible) does source some different setting than a console login does, and damned if I could tell which one it is. (I tried changing the setting in /etc/init.d/rc, and no, it did not help.) How / where do I set umask globally, so that the X11 desktop environment gets the memo as well?

• Application lens as default

  I want to open the Application lens in the Unity Dash as the default lens, since I much more open a programm then searching for a wikipedia article, the weather or anything else the home lens offers. Here How do I show the Applications Lens By Default? and here What are Unity's keyboard and mouse shortcuts? are the same questions, but the suggested answers don't work anymore on Trusty. I know that I can open the application lens with Super + A but I just would like to press Super to open it. An alternative would be to only get online suggestions whe partikular asked for them, but even though I just select the application scope in the filter section I get some useles online results. Btw. I don't want to open the online search results in generall, since I just reactivated them to try it out.

• Hosting a website from a dynamic IP

  I recently upgraded my internet to the point that it is much faster and more reliable than my current webhost. I would like to move my current domain to be hosted at home, but my IP address is dynamic. As far as I know, I only get a new IP when I restart my modem and or router (which is almost never) or when cable one (my ISP) pushes out a firmware update (rarely). There are a few ways I can see doing this 1) convince my ISP to give me a static IP 2) assign my router my current IP to force a static IP (which might work?) 3) set my dns record to my current IP address and update it on the rare occasions that it changes. Obviously I'm hoping that the first one works, but I don't want to pay a lot of extra money (if that's what it takes) to get a static IP address. Has anyone had any luck with something like that?

• Burn MP4 to CD in ubuntu 12.04

  I have an mp4 file (115,8 mb). I want to burn it to a Sony CD-R (700 mb) to watch on tv. I tried to do it with DeVeDe from ubuntu software center but it always give me this error: "Conversion failed. It seems a bug of Mencoder." Can anyone tell me an other method to burn my mp4 to cd? Or can anyone tell me how to fix DeVeDe's error? I use a TOSHIBA computer (64 bit) with windows 7 home premium and ubuntu 12.04 LTS (installed via wubi.exe). Thx.
