• PostgreSQL service doesn't start on Windows 7

  (Not sure if this should be on Stack Overflow or Super User... please move if needed.) When I start the PostgreSQL service on Windows 7 x64, it immediately stops. When I check my log folder (C:\PostgreSQL\9.1\data\pg_log\), I see new but empty log files. The Event Viewer doesn't tell me anything other than the fact that the server did not respond. I've even tried turning off my firewall (I don't have any antivirus or anything else), but nothing helps. The setup works fine when I'm on Windows XP (32-bit) (same computer, different partition). I can't figure out what's wrong, even though I've tried tracing the system calls. Is PostgreSQL compatible with Windows 7 x64 at all? Any ideas what the issue might be? More info: This problem also happens at the end of installation -- the service starts, then stops immediately, before the installer can do anything. Installation log: Starting the database server...   My laptop dual boots Vista Home Premium and Windows XP. I have Vista on the C drive and XP on the D drive. I formatted Vista and installed Windows 7 over it. Problem is that I'm now unable to boot XP. I've tried to boot with the XP installation disk, but no luck, the repair option is not available. What do I do to fix this?

  Storyline Trying to migrate a database from MySQL to PostgreSQL. All the documentation I have read covers, in great detail, how to migrate the structure. I have found very little documentation on migrating the data. The schema has 13 tables (which have been migrated successfully) and 9 GB of data. MySQL version: 5.1.x PostgreSQL version: 8.4.x I want to use the R programming language to analyze the data using SQL select statements; PostgreSQL has PL/R, but MySQL has nothing (as far as I can tell). A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... Create the database location (/var has insufficient space; also dislike having the PostgreSQL version number everywhere -- upgrading would break scripts!): sudo mkdir -p /home/postgres/main sudo cp -Rp /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main /home/postgres sudo chown -R postgres.postgres /home/postgres sudo chmod -R 700 /home/postgres sudo usermod -d /home/postgres/ postgres All good to here. • Windows 8.1 install error 0x80070002

  I tried to install Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store and got the error 0x80070002. It seems that this error means that the download was not completed. I tried to restart the installation, I tried to clear the windows store cache, I tried to delete every thing in the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, I tried to do a clean boot. It always fails with the same error. As a workaround, is there a way to download windows 8.1 from somewhere else than the windows store?

• Ubuntu suddenly freezes

  I've a strange problem with my ubuntu 10.04 installation. Whenever i boot into ubuntu the entire system freezes / hangs soon after (~ 2 mins in). This problem exists on my windows 7 installation too. However if i start World of Warcraft or Warcraft on windows it doesnt hang for the duration i'm playing the game. After i stop playing and exit the game my laptop hangs inside 2 mins. Here is when it gets weirder. If i disconnect the charger, the laptop doesn't hang. However when I start it in ubuntu recovery mode and drop to root shell and use the 'startx' command everything works perfectly.   Here's a message from my eventvwr EventLog (Windows Logs System): The previous system shutdown at 11:51:15 AM on ?7/?29/?2009 was unexpected. This is funny because I was wondering why the system shut down while I was playing Civilizations IV full screen. Now I know. It was unexpected. Has anyone encountered and resolved this? A little background: I am running Windows 7 RC inside VMWare Fusion 2 (just updated a few months back) on a MacBook (Bitterly not Pro) aluminum-body. Windows 7 occasionally will shut down. This isn't a quick turn-off, it's a shutdown where all the programs are exited, the system waits until they quit (and Civ4 doesn't prompt me to save), it even installed Windows Updates before restarting. And yes it is restarting right after the shutdown. Because I run a game in full screen mode I do not notice any dialog with a countdown timer or anything like that that might be a warning. As I have iStat on my dashboard widgets I can see about 8 temperature monitors. I have seen the CPU get up to 74C before, but during the shutdown, though it seemed hot to the touch (always is), it read 61C for the CPU, 60C for heatsink A, 50C for heatsink B and in the 30s-40s for the enclosure and harddrives. As I type this now, the temps are actually higher, so I don't think the temperature caused it. I have at least six such events dating first from 5/17 which was a week after installing Windows 7. I did find one information level warning from USER32 in the system log that says: The process C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe (DLAMBLIN-WIN7) has initiated the restart of computer DLAMBLIN-WIN7 on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Recovery (Planned) Reason Code: 0x80020002 Shutdown Type: restart Comment: And another 15 minutes before that from Windows Update: Restart Required: To complete the installation of the following updates, the computer will be restarted within 15 minutes: - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 Release Candidate for x64-based Systems (KB972260) Which I think kind of explains it. Though I don't know why restarting after an update would create an error event of "shutdown was unexpected", isn't that pretty odd? Now, how do I set it to never restart after an update unless I click something. Application of solution: As fretje reminded me, there's a couple of configurable settings for this, in windows 7 they're much in the same place as in Windows 2000 SP3 and XP SP1. • Windows XP update not working

  I have a problem with XP updating. It hangs when I try to search for updates on the website. But the automatic updates still work. And it's running IE6, so I'm trying to update to IE8, hoping that will fix the problems with the website. But when installing IE8 it just hangs at Installing Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP And if I try to install it manually, it hangs when installing the updates for IE8. • Pairing Sony bluetooth headphones with my laptop

  Hi there, I have the Sony DR-BT50 wireless headphones. I've been able to successfully pair them to my iPhone and play music through them, but no such luck with my PC. I can add it to the bluetooth devices, but when the "Driver Software Installation" screen comes up, I get a red X and "No driver found". Any ideas how to fix this? (I have a bluetooth keyboard & mouse paired successfully, so it's not a problem with my laptop's bluetooth.)

  Im trying to setup a minimal desktop with openbox window manager on Arch linux. I noticed these weird font rendering issues with Monaco font. Below font size 13, alternate font sizes are rendered in an aliased, ugly manner. The same Arch installation has no problem rendering Monaco font when running under xfce. some of the characters even look completely different. I tried tweaking my .fonts.conf, but no luck.

  I had Windows Vista on my computer and wanted to upgrade to Windows 7 and thought that I would format my computer since it had been awhile. When I installed Windows 7 it wouldnt let me it would go through all the installation and then when my computer rebooted it would just be black screen with my mouse, I have tried mulitpule times now, and have just gone backs to Windows Vista, this no longer works and does the same thing as when I tried to insta I have a Nvidia GTX 275 video card, ASUS m2N-E SLI mother board,and a AMD 5200 Dual core processor

  I just finished installing ArcGIS Server 10 and completed the post-installation. The ArcGIS Server Object Manager service is installed, but when I try to start it, I get the following error: "Windows could not start the ArcGIS Server Object Manager service on the Local Computer. Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly." The agsadmin and agsusers groups exist, and my local account is a member of the agsadmin group. Any ideas on what I've done wrong? Thanks, Jon.

  I always see the configuring ms office with a an endless progress bar, 2 or more weeks after I installed ms office(2000, 2003, 2010 beta). I'm not exactly sure what it is called but it is trying to configure ms office.Or maybe repairing the installation. And it sucks because when I need to access ms word NOW, I can only see that box with the progress bar. And when I press cancel, it won't open ms word, or maybe the whole suite(ms word, powerpoint, excel) What might be a possible solution to this?anyone here who has encountered it before

• OpenNMS monitoring SAP

Mostly looking for experiences, perhaps Nagios comparisons, or some more concrete information on what is being monitored and how you did it. Go into as much details as you like. I am currently in the process of evaluating both Nagios and OpenNMS and the possibilities with SAP might be the deciding factor here. Sadly, I didn't find a whole lot on google on the subject.

• windows 8.1 couldn't be installed with error 0xc1900101 0x20006

  I tried to install the just released update of windows 8.1, but after several reboot it said it couldn't install it with the error : windows 8.1 couldn't be installed with error 0xc1900101 0x20006 I don't have truecrypt or bitlocker, just a dual boot with MacOSx86 (hackintosh) and chimera bootloader, I am not sure if it has anything to do with the error. • Ubuntu/Windows suddenly freezes

  I've a strange problem with my ubuntu 10.04 installation. Whenever i boot into ubuntu the entire system freezes / hangs soon after (~ 2 mins in). This problem exists on my windows 7 installation too. However if i start World of Warcraft or Warcraft on windows it doesnt hang for the duration i'm playing the game. After i stop playing and exit the game my laptop hangs inside 2 mins. Here is when it gets weirder. If i disconnect the charger, the laptop doesn't hang. However when I start it in ubuntu recovery mode and drop to root shell and use the 'startx' command everything works perfectly. • Change EXT3 stride and stripe-width settings post-install on CentOS 5.3

  Is there a way to change the stride and stripe-width options on an ext3 file system under CentOS/RHEL 5.3? There's no way to specify it via anaconda during installation that I saw, and while I see the -E option to tune2fs available under Ubuntu, I don't see it in the manpage on CentOS. I did try to use the -E flag on CentOS and it rejects the flag as unknown if I try to use it. Anyone have any way to do this short of reinstallation?

• What backup utilities are available for Trixbox CE?

  I'm running Trixbox CE (v2.6.2.3) and I need to make a full system backup of all configurations, recordings, databases, etc in a manner that can be easily restored on a brand new installation of the same version of Trixbox CE. I started to write something myself using rsync, however I feel like I'm probably missing some things and needlessly copying other things. What are my options?
