• SQL Server 08 Express error when connecting to localhost - "Timeout expired". Works with ::1 or 127.0.0.1

  EDIT New info: Navigating to localhost:1434 in Chrome gives me an "ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE", while other ports give me an "Oops! This link appears to be broken". So it seems to binding ok there? So here's my setup so far: I've configured Windows Firewall to allow TCP on 1433 and UDP on 1434. I've set up SQL Server to use any IP on Port 1433 (using the SQL Server Configuration Manager). My hosts file contains the default entries ("127.0.0.1 localhost" and "::1 localhost"). I sometimes have a debug session of Visual Web Developer running a webserver, but it's on a specific port (localhost:5XXXX). What I've tried: I CAN ping localhost in a cmd prompt. I CAN connect to the database through SSMS if I specify 127.0.0.1 or ::1 as the server name. I CAN'T connect to the database through SSMS (or ADO.NET) if I specify localhost as the server name. I've tried both Windows and SQL Authentication The error I get is the standard Can't connect to localhost. Additional Information -- Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. (Microsoft Sql Server) Other considerations: Stopping the Visual Web Developer web server from the taskbar doesn't affect the sql problem. The SQL error log says that it's listening on some piped name url at start up (I don't see how this would affect localhost but not 127.0.0.1 though). I could probably just use 127.0.0.1 everywhere, but it scares me that localhost isn't working and I'd like to figure out why. I'm not much of a networking or sql server guy so I'm stuck. If you want me to try anything to help diagnose just put it in a comment and I'll give it a go. • Spring Security: how to implement Brute Force Detection (BFD)?

  My web applications security is handled by Spring Security 3.02 but I can't find any out of the box support for Brute Force Detection. I would like to implement some application level BFD protection. For example by storing failed login attempt per user in the database (JPA). The attacked user accounts could then get a lockout period or a forced account re-activation by e-mail. What's the best way to implement this with Spring Security? Does any body have example code or best practices on this?

• Cocoa: getting a Table View cell to send action messages

  I'm really having trouble getting a Cocoa Table View cell to send action messages. At the most basic level, in IB there is an action assigned for the NSTextViewCell object, and after editing and pressing Return nothing happens. So I have an IBOutlet hooked up to the NSTextViewCell, and have been experimenting with NSActionCell messages to it. But the Table View seems to pretty much just ignore them. I've also tried subclassing NSTextViewCell, but the methods I'm seeing all look like they want to pass values to the object from somewhere, not return a value from inside the object to configure its behavior. I'm pretty new to programming and Cocoa -- can someone explain each thing that needs to be overridden and how and where to do it?

• Can iTextSharp export to JPEG?

  I need to be able to export PDF's that I am creating to JPEG, so that users can have a screenshot/thumbnail of the end product, which is faster than opening the whole PDF. I am running this on an ASP.NET website running in Medium Trust in the Rackspace Mosso Cloud. I have yet to find a library that will either work in Medium trust, or in the case of ABC PDF, which works great locally, wont load in Mosso. Maybe Mosso has a custom trust level? I know that iTextSharp works on Mosso, but I haven't been able to figure how to "screenshot" a single page of a PDF, or export a page to JPEG. Is there anyone out there who has done this before?

  Hello All: I have one application in which I want to pass data between Pages (Views) without sessions. Actually I want to apply some settings to all the pages using query string. For example if my link is like "http://example.com?data=test1", then I want to append this query string to all the link there after and if there is no query string then normal flow. I was thinking if there is any way that if we get the query string in any link for the web application then some application level user specific property can be set which can be used for subsequent pages.   Hi, I'm trying to create a CD-burning feature for a Java-based music player for my school project. Since I'm new to real-life programming (I've only learned to write codes on AP Computer Science A level), I don't know how I can apply the concepts I learned from APCS A to this task. A friend of mine who is studying computer science at graduate school told me to "look up the cd player control functions and add methods in those classes to read in data that you want to write to the CD, write it to a buffer, write everything in the buffer to the CD itself, clear the buffer and then write a new chunk of data into the buffer," but I can't quite grasp what this means, and tt's really hard to contact her right now because she's busy working on her dissertation. Can someone from this forum please guide me through & explain the general concepts? Thank you!

• Why load increase ,ssd iops increase but cpu iowait decrease?

  There is a strange thing on my server which has a mysql running on it. The QPS is more than 4000 but TPS is less than 20. The server load is more than 80 and cpu usr is more than 86% but iowait is less than 8%. The disk iops is more than 16000 and util of disk is more than 99%. When the QPS decreases, the load decreases, the cpu iowait increases. • Best Practices for Source Control Dependencies

  How do you handle source control setup of a project that has dependency on a separate framework or library? For example, Project A uses Framework B. Should Project A also include the code from Framework B in its repository? Is there a way for it to be included automatically from a different repository or would I have to updated it manually? What are the general approaches are usually taken for this scenario? Assume that I control the repositories for both Project A and Framework B and that the source code for both is not compiled. Any resources or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently using Subversion (on a very basic level), but I would like to switch to Mercurial so that I can try out Kiln with Fogbugz. Edit: In Mercurial, would you use parent repositories for this function?

• Recommendations for keeping a build server updated

  As a guy who frequently switches between QA, build and operations, I keep running into the issue of what to do about operating system updates on the build server. The dichotomy is the same on Windows, Linux, MacOS or any other o/s that can update itself via the internet: The QA team wants to keep the build server exactly as it is from the beginning of the product release cycle to the end, since installing updates could destabilize the server and means that successive builds aren't made against the same baseline. The ops team wants the software to be deployed on a system with all the latest security patches; this can mean that the software isn't deployed on exactly the same version of the o/s that it was built on. I usually mitigate this by taking release candidate builds and installing them on a test server that has a completely up-to-date o/s, repeating the automated tests that are run on the build server and doing some additional system level testing to make sure everything looks good before deployment. However, this seems inefficient to me; does anyone have a better way ?

So, I thought of providing any level of groupid to the query to retrieve just its children and its corresponding aggregated value. Any better solution?

  I'm trying export records from SQL Server 2008 to mdb file using OpenDataSource. It works when I log in using Windows authentication. But it fails when I use SQL Server authentication. This is the error i get OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "(null)" returned message "Could not delete from specified tables.". • Entity Framework 4 relationship management in POCO Templates - More lazy than FixupCollection?

  I've been taking a look at EF4 POCO templates in beta 2. The FixupCollection looks fine for maintaining the model correctness after updating the relationship collection property (i.e. product.Orders it would set the order.Product reference ). But what about support for handling the scenario when some of those Order objects are removed from the context? The use-case of maintaining cascading deletes in the in-memory model. The old Typed DataSet model used to do this by performing the query through the container to derive the relationship results. Like the DataSet, this would require a reference to the ObjectContext inside the entity class so that it could query the top-level Order collection. Better support for Separation of Concerns in the ObjectContext would be required. It looks like EF is not suited to this use-case that DataSets did out of the box.... am I right?

I just learned about the existence of CSS frameworks. 960 Grid System seems pretty awesome, then I found Blueprint, which seems to do the same thing and more. Is there a better word than "framework" to categorize this? Are there any other products in this category? In response to one of the comments http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1483565/link-to-a-site-designed-using-a-css-framework-blueprint-960-etc, "how many example frameworks do you want? he just listed two of them.", I'd love to have more than two examples, unless those are the only two in the running. Blueprint, which is "the original CSS framework" 960 Grid System, which is a tool to have a grid underlying your screen. YUI 2: Grids, similar to 960? The rest of YUI is more similar to JQuery?

• Are tile overlays possible with the iPhone's MapKit

  I already have a tile source set up for use with the Google Maps JavaScript API. I am trying to translate this for use with the iPhone MapKit. I have correctly implemented the javascript zooming levels into mapkit. Whenever - (void)mapView:(MKMapView *)mapView regionDidChangeAnimated:(BOOL)animated is called, I snap the region to the nearest zoom level based on the same center point. Is it possible to implement a solution possibly with CATiledLayer to implement a tiling solution. Does the iPhone use the standard 256x256 tiles like google maps does natively? Any direction or help on this would be greatly appreciated. I would rather not waste a couple weeks trying to implement this if it's not possible.

I am looking for a way to to configure Tomcat on which this application run, so the pages could be read by IE8 and treated as if they are IE7 or IE6 By googling so far I found a possible suggestion which say to add to the http response the header: X-UA-Compatible: IE=EmulateIE7 here that tell IE8 to be like IE7. The problem is that this way requires adding a filter that should be added on application level. I'd like to know if any of you is familiar with a more generic way that Tomcat enables to send its http content to be IE7 (or IE6) compatible ?

Basically i have a PHP page that is on our server and when called with certain parameters returns data relating to the servers condition etc. i have managed to get a small Xcode application working where by it reads the data from the page and populates an NSTextView with the data. however to make sure this information stays safe i have setup basic HTTP Authentication on the page, but i cannot work out how to provide the username and password in XCode. here is my code to retrieve the page. I'll also settle for something similar, but instead of native ASP.NET, a library for any of the open source CMS products for ASP.NET. (Umbraco is at the top of my list, followed by mojoPortal. I aspire to the level of coding their creators easily demonstrate in the product.
