• Best/Preferred software for photography.

  I am just getting into photography as a hobby, and am looking for some good tools for image uploading/browsing/editing. I am currently using the Canon EOS utility that came with the camera for uploading, Picasa for browsing, and GIMP for editing. Pros: The files are stored using the standard file system (no proprietary library like iPhoto) Great photo editing possibilities Free (except the Canon Utility, but that was bundled) Cons: Multiple programs Hard to view the Exif Data (I like the way that iPhoto displays the data) Over-simplified editing tools in Picasa What other tools should I look into? Also, I occasionally shoot in RAW, and would prefer Mac support (better monitor), but I also have windows and linux machines.

• Thomson TG585v7 router - promiscuous mode

  I have a TG585v7 as a router with several machines plugged into it. In the default setup, the packets are only delivered to the specific machine but I want to be able to setup to monitor all network traffic on one of the machines, i.e. I need those packets to be picked up when my ethernet card is in promiscuous mode. Is this possible? Guide here has this "mcastpromisc Make the IP interface multicast promiscuous. OPTIONAL", is this what I am looking for? Does it mean I need to manually add all my machines by their MAC addresses to be able to receive packets destined for them? Or am I out of luck and I need to get a better router?

• Force Colloquy not to use built-in Growl notifications

  Whenever Colloquy needs to pop up a notification (for example, when you are PM'd), it uses its built-in Growl notifications, which really annoy me because they stay on the screen until they are clicked (at least NOTICE's do anyways). I'd like to make Colloquy use the Growl that I have installed on my Mac, not its built-in Growl notifications. That way, I could change its preferences from the Growl .prefpane and it would match the look of all my other notifications. I seem to remember this being possible (maybe in a bug report or something), but I can't remember how. Thanks!

• Cannot find the "Create Network" menuitem in the WiFi icon menu in Mountain Lion

  I am using Mountain Lion Developer Preview 2. I cannot find the "Create Network" menuitem in the WiFi icon menu in the menubar. It was there before when I was using Lion. It started missing since I upgraded to Mountain Lion Developer Preview 1. By the way, is there any other method to create an ad-hoc WiFi network on OS X? I tried to use Internet Sharing via WiFi, but other devices using the shared connection could not find the Mac in their local networks. I am using an early 2011 MacBook Pro 15'. Thanks.

• Multiple PXE server same subnet

  I've been struggling with this for some time. I have a few test machines that boot from the network, they receive the boot data from the DHCP server, this tells them who is the boot server where is the file they'll boot etc. However, I need to add a second PXE server in the same subnet (create another Vlan is not an option right now). I read somewhere that I may be able to send certain parameters to certain machines based on their MAC address (this way choosing what computers boot from what server) however I cannot find how to do this, anyone knows how? this will be my solution but I cannot find the answer. My DHCP is a windows server 2003 I have 2 servers running custom flavors of Linux server as TFTP servers. Some machines use data to boot from server 1, and the others must bu able to boot from server 2. Thx

• How can I format a USB "thumb drive" so it will be readable on OS X and Windows?

  I have an OS X system. I want to use it to put some files on a USB drive and then be able to loan the drive to Mac and XP and Vista users so they can get the files off it. I also need to wipe the drive clean first to make sure there's nothing sensitive on it by accident because I'm going to be passing it around. What the name of the filesystem format I want? • How do I uninstall Adobe Air?

  I stumbled upon Adobe Air in the Utilities folder of my Mac. I don't use Flash, and I am not aware of having installed any other programs which need Adobe Air. There were two files - An installer and uninstaller. Clicking on the uninstaller simply launched a window saying that Adobe Air is already installed on my system! It didn't give me any option to remove it. So I deleted both the files. A few minutes later, a window opened on its own, asking me if I wanted to update Adobe Air now, or later! How do I make sure this cheeky application has been removed completely?

• Wireless printer going offline upon entering power save mode

  I recently bought a printer, Samsung ML1865W, a wireless laser printer. It works very well, wirelessly until after a while, it goes to power save mode when the printer goes offline. I then cannot connect to the printer (pinging the ip and various ports associated with it do not give any response) until I power cycle the printer. I have checked my wireless settings and my router, I have installed the printer software in WinXP, Win2000 and in Mac and the printer behaves just the same. Any ideas if the printer hardware itself is broken or that its something on my network/application side that's the culprit. If you own the printer, have you had any trouble like that at any time?

• zeroing a disk with dd vs Disk Utility

  I'm attempting to zero a disk on my Mac OS X machine. I'm going for complete zeros and unformatted, so I think of dd. Unfortunately the maximum throughput I've managed to get out of dd is 7MB/s. Just for grins I tried disk utility and it has a throughput of 19MB/s. What gives? I've tried changing the bs option on dd to all sorts of values, but it still hovers around 7MB/s. Why is disk utility so much faster?

  I have turned on Wake On Lan on all of the BIOSes in the PCs and I have a simple batch file that runs a free command wolcmd.exe Wake on Lan Command Line The syntax is as follows: wolcmd [mac address] [ip address] [subnet mask] [port number] The batch file looks a little like this.... wolcmd 009027a324fe 195.188.159.20 255.255.255.0 8900 wolcmd 009024a731da 212.86.64.31 255.255.255.0 8900 It's OK but It's not very user friendly (I need to set this up for other people to use and administer) Can you suggest a Windows (XP/Vixta/7) Alternative with a GUI? • Is it possible to run bash builtin from non bash script?

  Is it possible to run for example history -w for underlying bash shell from ruby script? Or better is it possible to run builtin command for bash shell knowing only its pid? The only way I found is to trap signal like trap "history -w" SIGUSR1 and then send signal to process, but I am not sure that it is a good practice and USR1 is not used by bash, also this way I can execute max 2 commands (USR1 and USR2). And I have to define trap before using it. I am on Mac so there is not SIGRTMIN..SIGRTMAX.

• How can I send an email from Mail.app to Outlook with an attachment that does not embed into the email body?

  I'm using Mail.app (on Mac OS X 10.6) and when I send an email to users on PC Outlook, with an attached image, they get the email as an image embedded into the body, not as an attachement. I even tried clicking "view as icon" before sending the attachment from Macmail, but that made no difference. I also tried this myself, sending from Mail.app over to my PC's Outlook, and I do get that same problem. In Outlook the image is not coming through as an attachment, but as an image embedded into the body of the email. The reason this is an issue primarily is because the user is then unable to click "save as" and has to actually copy and paste it into some other program, which means the file is converted from jpg or png to the bmp format. But beyond that, most of my recipients don't even know how to copy and paste it into another program to save it that way anyway. They need the "save attachment as" functionality.

• Mouse cursor in Terminal?

  I use Mac OS X Terminal.app. But the answer to this would probably apply to any typical UNIX-ish terminal emulator in a graphical environment. Question -- what do I do to: Use my mouse cursor to click on a character-position in the current line of the terminal, and have the terminal's cursor jump to that spot? Typically, you have to hold down an arrow key to move to the correct cursor position. If you're pasting in a long string of text at the shell prompt, or working in an editor like VI, this can take a long time. I know editors have other navigation keys like jump-words, but I like my mouse cursor.

  I am an OSX user, I have Snow Leopard 10.6.5 and an updated AirPort. I am trying to connect to my university's wireless network, but it has a complex security that I am having trouble defining... Here there are instructions for connecting with Windows XP, Windows 7 and Linux. Can someone please instruct me what should I do to set up this network on my MAC? Thank you. P.S. I have had previous success in setting up this network, but I have no idea what I did that made it work. Since I updated my AirPort it worked only seldomly and very slowly... • Virtual NIC on VM couldn't ping externally after Vmotion

  Today I vmotioned 5 MS SQL 2005 servers over to a new DRS Cluster. All SQL servers use the "Production_LAN" network and a single virtual NIC of type "VMXNET 3". The first 4 SQL VM (Windows 2003 Standard or Enterprise x32 bit) vmotioned over without a hitch. The last SQL VM I vmotioned (Windows 2003 Standard x64 bit R2) vmotioned over without error, but I upon completion, I could no longer ping the VM. I went into the VM and could not even ping the gateway, however I could ping the loopback. This SQL server is extremely busy in comparison with the previous 4 VM's. I restarted the server and it came back up with the virtual nic working just fine. The build of both servers (vmotioner and vmotionee) is ESX 4.0.0 175625 - So, pre-update 1. Should I suspect the network switch/VM for possibly not updating the mac table on the switch? Anybody else ever have this issue or know what may have caused it? Thank you!

  ok so i'm working through a tutorial to get rvm installed on my mac. the bash command to get rvm via curl is curl -L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable i understand the first half's curl command at location rvm.io, and that the result is piped to the subsequent bash command, but i'm not sure what that command is doing. My questions: -s : im always confused about how to refer to these. what type of thing is this: a command line argument? a switch? something else? -s : what is it doing? i have googled for about half an hour but not sure how to refer to it makes it difficult. stable : what is this? tl;dr : help me decipher the command bash -s stable to those answering this post, i aspire to one day be as bash literate as you. until then, opstards such as myself thank you for the help!

• Why would a server not send a SYN/ACK packet in response to a SYN packet

  Lately, we've become aware of a TCP connection issue that is mostly limited to mac and Linux users who browse our websites. From the user perspective, it presents itself as a really long connection time to our websites (11 seconds). We've managed to track down the technical signature of this problem, but can't figure out why it is happening or how to fix it. Basically, what is happening is that the client's machine is sending the SYN packet to establish the TCP connection and the web server receives it, but does not respond with the SYN/ACK packet. After the client has sent many SYN packets, the server finally responds with a SYN/ACK packet and everything is fine for the remainder of the connection. And, of course, the kicker to the problem: it is intermittent and does not happen all the time (though it does happen between 10-30% of the time) We are using Fedora 12 Linux as the OS and Nginx as the web server.

• Sound recognition software

  I'm looking for a software able to recognize an specific sound and then do some action. I want to leave my notebook close by the house intercom so when I hear someone ringing it, a very specific and unique sound, it will send me an email at my office or something. The main issue is that there's a lot of different noises there, but none would be as loud as the intercom for the specific place I've left the microphone. Is there any software out there able to do this? Hopefully with a mac version. I trust there's nothing closely related in this to speech or voice recognition technologies, and specially the softwares in there.

• Copying OS X account settings to new user account

  Hi I hope someone can help me... I accidentally renamed my own user name on my mac running OS X 10.4.11 and tried renaming back to what it was but now I have two accounts (the one I want to use which has all my preferences, applications, mail boxes, etc etc) is it possible to copy my settings from my original into this new user name? When I open my computer it defaults to this new account but everything is setting up from new and I just need to get access to all my work documents, mail settings etc. If there is anyone who could help out, I would be very grateful.   I work at a relatively small company, around 30 people and we are now looking into a solution that can handle: File sharing. Email server. Calendar support. Around 30 users. Accessible from external network. Support for Windows XP (and above), Mac OS 10.6.3 and Ubuntu clients. When it comes down to security we don't have the experience to comment on that.   Operating system: Mac OS 10.6.2 I'd like to be able to see colour output when piping certain commands through less. Two examples: I've got ls aliased to ls --color=auto, so I'd like to be able to see colour when I do this: ls -l | less I've also got the color extension turned on in Mercurial, so I'd like to see colour output from: hg diff | less and hg st | less After some googling, it seems like some versions of less support either -r or -R to make this work, but no dice for me. I can't see anything in the man page that looks like what I need. (-r or -R SEEM to be the right options, but again, they don't seem to work)

Wired Devices are getting ip address and able to access internet.Wifi was working till yesterday,but all of a sudden it stopped working. on the ddwrt controlpanelsystem information under Wireless Clients mac address of clients that are trying to connect are appearing but soon it disappears. but no such issue with wired clients. Can any one please help me in fixing this..

• Network connectivity logs on OSX

  I'm trying to determine whether or not Macs store a log of network connectivity. Specifically, I'm trying to find out if one of my machines (Mac Tower, OSX 10.7.4, 2-2.26 GHz, 16 GB DDR3) lost connection to pinpoint an issue. This machine is on an external network where and the IT staff is not very helpful, so I'm trying to ensure that there were network issues rather than some other local issue on that particular machine. Can you pull network logs thru Console that show when a network connection was established and was disconnected?
