• Why won't the VisualVM Profiler profile my application?

  I've created a simple 1 file java application that iterates through a loop, calls some functions, allocates some memory, adds some numbers, etc. I run that application via eclipse's Run As->Java Application. The running application shows up in Java VisualVM under Local. I double click on that application and go to the Profiler tab. The default settings are: Start profiling from classes: my.main.package.** Do not profile classes: java.*, javax.*, sun.*, sunw.*, com.sun.* I click on CPU. The CPU and Memory buttons gray out. Nothing happens. The Status says profiling inactive. When my application terminates the Status says application terminated. What am I doing wrong here? Are there some settings I need to tweak? Do I need to set a VM flag when I launch my application?

• Terminal services and memory limits

  Is there a way in Terminal Services to set limits on memory related parameters for a process. For example working set size and, possibly, if it makes sense, total virtual memory allocation for the session? To turn the question around, we have an application which cannot allocate as much virtual memory running on a terminal server as it can when running on a desktop PC (both I would expect to have a limit of 2GB for user mode address space) and I was wondering if there is another limit for processes or users on a terminal server. Perhaps even 2GB per user rather than per process.

• WPF Application that only has a tray icon

  I am a total WPF newbie and wonder if anyone could give me some pointers how to write an application that starts minimized to tray. The idea is that it periodically fetches an RSS Feed and creates a Toaster-Popup when there are new feeds. The Application should still have a Main Window (essentially just a list containing all feed entries), but that should be hidden by default. I have started reading about XAML and WPF and I know that the StartupUri in the App.xaml has to point to my main window, but I have no idea what the proper way is to do the SysTray icon and hide the main window (this also means that when the user minimizes the window, it should minimize to tray, not to taskbar). Any hints?

• Open source license for test code

  I'm creating a project to house an iPhone library for common code for the iPhone... essentially it's a library that'll save people from finding solutions to common problems that amount to copying and pasting snippets of code. The site is located here: http://code.google.com/p/devkit-bb/ I licensed it under Eclipse, because fosters the extension of the library without requiring constraints like LGPL on object files being provided/made available, which would be the case since everything is statically linked. What I'm wondering is how/what license to apply to the unit tests? Since they essentially demonstrate how to use various interfaces and components. Thus they're designed for potential copy and paste situations, and I don't want people who might end up using this as part of the building blocks of their environment to feel like the license would prohibit that "derivative work", ie. their application or game.

• How do i break a number down into a percentage (0 - 100%)? Details inside...

  I am using a JS progress bar that is set using a percentage: 0 to 100 (percent). I need the progress bar to reach 100% when 160,000 people have signed a certain form. I have the total number of signers set in a PHP variable but am lost on how to do the math to convert that into a percentage that fits within 1 - 100 (so that the progress bar actually reflects the goal of 160,000). I may be missing something obvious here (i suck at anything number-related) so does anyone here have a clue as to how to do this?

• Tracking unique versions of files with hashes

  I'm going to be tracking different versions of potentially millions of different files, and my intent is to hash them to determine I've already seen that particular version of the file. Currently, I'm only using MD5 (the product is still in development, so it's never dealt with millions of files yet), which is clearly not long enough to avoid collisions. However, here's my question - Am I more likely to avoid collisions if I hash the file using two different methods and store both hashes (say, SHA1 and MD5), or if I pick a single, longer hash (like SHA256) and rely on that alone? I know option 1 has 288 hash bits and option 2 has only 256, but assume my two choices are the same total hash length. Since I'm dealing with potentially millions of files (and multiple versions of those files over time), I'd like to do what I can to avoid collisions. However, CPU time isn't (completely) free, so I'm interested in how the community feels about the tradeoff - is adding more bits to my hash proportionally more expensive to compute, and are there any advantages to multiple different hashes as opposed to a single, longer hash, given an equal number of bits in both solutions?

• unable to connect emulator with internet

  hi I am using Android 2.2 . I am unable to connect my emulator to internet . When I open my web browser in the emulator it shows the message "Web Page not available" . I have set proxy settings in the emulator (settings - Wireless & Networks -Mobile Networks - Access Point Names). Also , I set proxy settings in eclipse (Windows- Preferences- Android- Launch- Default Emulator Options). • ANTLR parser hanging at proxy.handshake call

  I am attempting to get a basic ECMAScript parser working, and found a complete ANTLR grammar for ECMAScript 3, which appears to compile ok and produces the appropriate Lexer/Parser/Walker Java files. (Running inside ANTLR IDE plugin for Eclipse 3.5) However, when actually trying to use it with some simple test code (following guide on ANTLR wiki), it just hangs when trying to create the parser: CharStream MyChars = new ANTLRFileStream(FileName); // FileName is valid ES3Lexer MyLexer = new ES3Lexer(MyChars); CommonTokenStream MyTokens = new CommonTokenStream(MyLexer); MyTokens.setTokenSource(MyLexer); ES3Parser MyParser = new ES3Parser( MyTokens ); // hangs here ES3Parser.program_return MyReturn = MyParser.program(); I've tracked down the problem to inside the ES3Parser constructor, where it's calling the function proxy.handshake() - before this line I can successfully do System.out.println("text") but after it I get nothing. So, how do I go about finding out why it's hanging, and stopping it - or even just bypassing this section (can/should I disable debugging?) - so long as that lets it work and allows me to get on with doing useful stuff.

• Generating a Call Hierarchy for dynamicly invoked method

  Hello, Today's world of dynamic invoke, reflection and runtime injection just doesn't play well with traditional tools such as ctags, doxygen and CDOC. I am searching for a method call hierarchy visualization tool that can display both static and dynamic method invocations. It should be easy to use, light during execution and provide helpful detailed information about the recorded runtime session. Now I guess Callgrind could be considered a valid solution for the family C. What tool / technique could you suggest to create a call graph for both static and dynamic method invocation for JVM based bytecode? The intended end result is a graphical display (preferably interactive) which can show path from main() to each method that was invoked. During research for this post I stumbled upon javashot, it seems that this is the kind of approach I'm aiming at, I would prefer that this would be integrated into a kind of profiler or alike which than can be used from within my IDE (Eclipse, IntelliJ, Netbeans and alike). • Programmatically compose images into one grid in Deep Zoom

  Folks, the problem: there are individual 1MB images that represent a grid of images that should be placed side-by-side with no overlap and then conveted/exported to deepzoom. Image are named by row and column like image_col_row.jpg. The challenge: the total number of images in thousands, which makes it prohibitive for manual composition and exporting in DZC. I tried to first stitch images programmaticall into one huge image, then to use DZC - no luck cause the exporting chocked with the size. if you tried programmaticall compose and export deepzoom, please point me into the right direction. I want to profile the dynamic memory usage of my application: How many objects of each kind are there in the heap, and which functions created these objects? Also, how much memory is used by each of the object? Is there a simple way to do this? I am working on both linux and windows, so tools of any of the platforms would suffice. NOTE: I am not concerned with memory leaks here.

• Compound IDENTITY column in SQL SERVER 2008

  An Orders table has a CustomerId column and an OrderId column. For certain reasons it's important that OrderId is no longer than 2-bytes. There will be several million orders in total, which makes 2-bytes not enough. A customer will have no more than several thousand orders making 2-bytes enough. The obvious solution is to have the (CustomerId, OrderId) be unique rather than (OrderId) itself. The problem is generating the next Customer's OrderId. Preferably, without creating a separate table for each customer (even if it contains only an IDENTITY column), in order to keep the upper layers of the solution simple. Q: how would you generate the next OrderId so that (CustomerId, OrderId) is unique but OrderId itself is allowed to have repetitions? Does Sql Server 2008 have a built in functionality for doing this? For lack of a better term I'm calling it a Compound IDENTITY column.

All versions can't work now. I delete everything expect eclipse,download adt, AndroidSDK, platform2.3/2.2 ,still error. Heeeelp!!!

  Hello, I have been using ANTLR to generate a parser + tree grammar for a mark up language with Java target which works fine. Now I am trying to get the target in JavaScript to use it in my web browser. However, I have not been able to locate any good documentation on how to go about doing this. I am using eclipse with ANTLR IDE, and when i specify the language as JavaScript, I get the following errors.   hello I am working on a simple combinatorics part, and found that I need to recover position of two bits given position of other two bits in 4-bits srring. for example, (0,1) maps to (2,3), (0,2) to (1,3), etc. for a total of six combinations. My solution is to test bits using four nested ternary operators: ab is a four bit string, with two bits set. c = ((((ab & 1) ? (((ab & 2) ? ... ))) : 0) abc = ab | c recover the last bit in the same fashion from abc. can you think of a better way/more clever way? thanks

• Replicate behavior of Android browser

  Hi all, I am writing for Android, and I can't figure out how to replicate the effect of the Android browser where the progress bar is at the top of the screen, with the webview below it, yet when you scroll down, the bar scrolls with the page. I've tried placing both the webview and the progress bar into a scrollview, but when I do that, the webview becomes completely unresponsive and will not load (or respond to any commands, for that matter). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! P.S., I'm using the Eclipse IDE, and I'd like to to continue using the 1.5 SDK if possible to maintain backwards compatibility (and just to be able use my own application -- my phone isn't getting 2.1 for a couple of months).

• Fail to profile remote java app using TPTP

  Hi all, I am trying to profile CPU usage using TPTP. Application to profile run on Linux RH AS5. I installed and configured Agent Controller like described here I ran the java application using the command java '-agentlib:JPIBootLoader=JPIAgent:server=standalone,file=log.trcxml;CGProf' MyApp The monitoring station is All-In-one TPTP version 4.6.2. I followed the stepes described here on Eclipse - on the "Profile Configuration" I choose a new configuration for "Attach to Agent", set the host to my remote linux machine where MyApp is running, test connection succeed and when I get to the "Agents" tab, I see "Pending...", a background process "Feching children for host" is running and can't find anything which makes it impossible to profile. Any idea?

  hello I building my project using GWT plugin for eclipse Galileo, after i done from RPC between the server and client, i trying to make a reference from gwt server side to normal java class in non-gwt-project, but every time i make an object from the class (which in non-gwt-project) gives me ClassNotFoundException. i did the buildpath for the gwt project, but still gives me the same exception, is there a way to make that from server side (not from client side). i need help please, i spent a lot of time searching for solution but i did not found anything. i appreciate any suggestions...thanks

• Libqxt under Qt Creator

  I want to create a tiny app which needs global shortcuts. So, I have downloaded the current version of libqxt (0.5.1) and opened as a project in Qt Creator. Libqxt compiles without problems in this way, so I thought that adding this in the tab Dependencies of my project it would get added automatically in the build, like Eclipse does with JAR libraries (I know that are different IDEs but it seems to be a common feature among them). What happens? Qt Creator compiles qxt before my project, when needed, but when I want to include its headers Qt Creator keeps warning me that it cannot find them. Probably I am missing the correct name of headers (I tried the headers showed in qxt documentation: http://doc.libqxt.org/0.5.0/classQxtGlobalShortcut.html) By the way, I looked the code for global shortcuts and I think I can rip it out and use it in my app as is and I am going to credit qxt team and open the code of my app.

• I need git-svn to act as a Subversion v1.5+ client

  I'm running git 1.7 on Mac OSX, installed via Homebrew. I'm trying to use git svn to work with a Subversion server that requires Subversion 1.5 clients (a restriction enforced via a pre-commit hook.) Running git svn --version reveals that as far as git is concerned, git svn is equivalent to svn v1.4.4. I can't establish whether git svn is a total clone of subversion, and thus needs to be updated to meet subversion v1.5 functionality, or if git is compiled against or just points to some version of subversion under the hood. I've struggled finding anyone else trying to upgrade the version of git-svn, and I'm guessing this client version restriction is unusual, but I'm stuck with it (corporate environment.) Is it possible to have git operate as svn 1.5?

• How get Android 2.1 SDK to recognize new class: SignalStrength

  The new Android 2.1 SDK (version 7) has a new class called SignalStrength: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/telephony/SignalStrength.html I updated my SDK in Eclipse to include the 2.1 add-on, and now I am trying to use this new class. However, when I go to do an import android.telephony.SignalStrength, it can't find it. Do I have to somehow reset my project to refresh the SDK so it knows about the new libraries? How can I get it to recognize this new class? Thanks.
