• 100% width bg images not extending on horizontal scroll

  I'm noticing this issue. I made a quick screen capture to demonstrate: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/904456/2010-06-14_2323.swf Basically when you have a min-width set and the viewport goes under that constraint, a horizontal scroll bar appears. Pretty much what you would expect, but when you scroll over horizontally all elements that are suppose to extend across the entire width of the page and have background images/colors different from the body do not extend. If you resize the viewport it seems to catch up. Is this a known issue? You can see it on a lot of sites, http://gowalla.com for example. Any ideas?

When the previous interpreter was written, it was completed over two contiguous, rushed evenings. This rewrite deserves significantly more time now that it is the summer. Of course, the next version of Whitespace (0.4) may have its instructions revised even more, but this is just a redesign of what originally was done in a very short amount of time. Hopefully, the instructions make more sense once someone new to programmings thinks about them.

• maven dependencies and jetty - avoiding deploy

  Hi, I have a project with 3 artifacts: common - entities, business logic. no UI code webapp-a - a public web app webapp-b - an admin web app webapp-a and webapp-b depend on common. common is configured to deploy to a local maven repo. so far so good. I have IntelliJ configured so that each artifact is a separate module. Module dependencies are configured properly. I can add a new method to a class in common and immediately use that method in a class in a webapp. However, when I run mvn jetty:run it uses the currently deployed common snapshot in my repository. It does not use my local classes. If I add a method to a class in common, it compiles fine, but blows up at runtime. So is it possible to either: a) Convince jetty:run to use my local common build output or b) Deploy my common output to my local ~/.m2/repo while I'm testing locally before I want to commit/deploy or c) some other solution? thank you! -- James

• Do I need to use http redirect code 302 or 307?

  I am working on a CMS that uses a search facility to output a list of content items. You can use this facility as a search engine, but in this instance I am using it to output the current month's Media Releases from an archive of all Media Releases. The default parameters for these "Data Lists" as they are called, don't allow you to specify "current month" or "current year" for publication date - only "last x days" or "from dateA to dateB". The search facility will accept querystring parameters though, so I intend to code around it like this: Page loads How many days into the current month are we? Do we have a query string that asks for a list including this many days? If no, redirect the client back to this page with the appropriate query-string included. If yes, allow the CMS to process the query Now here's the rub. Suppose the spider from your favourite search engine comes along and tries to index your main Media Releases page. If you were to use a 301 redirect to the default query page, the spider would assume the main page was defunct and choose to add the query page to its index instead of the main page. Now I see that 302 and 307 indicate that a page has been moved temporarily; if I do this, are spiders likely to pop the main page into their index like I want them to? • Silverlight 4 - encoding PCM data from the microphone

  Hi I've written a basic SL4 application to capture audio data from the microphone using CaptureSource. The trouble is, it's raw PCM output - which means huge and uncompressed. Given that I need this application to run purely within a SL4 environment, how can I compress the PCM audio data into something that can be delivered to a remote server more easily? In conversation, people have suggested Speex and WMA for instance, but I haven't found any libraries or examples that work without requiring reference to DLL's that won't work in a SL4 project. • How can I transform XML to invalid XML using XSLT?

  I need to transform a valid XML document to the OFX v1.0.2 format. This format is more or less XML, but it's technically invalid and therefore cannot be parsed as XML. I'm having trouble getting my Xml transformation working because the .Net XslCompiledTransform object insists on interpreting the XSL as an XML document (which is fair enough). If I escape the xml-ish tags using &lt; and &gt, they get removed when I download the file. • Serial Communication between Java RXTX and Arduino

  I'm trying to communicate between my PC (Windows 7 using Netbeans and RXTX) with an Arduino Pro, using the serial port. The Arduino is actually connected to the PC using an FTDI cable. The code is based on the Java SimpleRead.Java found here. Currently the Arduino simply prints out a string when it starts up. My Java program should print the number of bytes that have been read and then print out the contents. The Java program works, sort of... If the string is long (10 bytes or so) the output will get broken up. So if on the Arduino I print Serial.println("123456789123456789"); //20 bytes including '\r' and '\n' The output of my Java program may look something like: Number of Bytes: 15 1234567891234 Number of Bytes: 5 56789 or Number of Bytes: 12 1234567891 Number of Bytes: 8 23456789 I'm thinking it's a timing problem, because when I manually go through the code using the debugger, the result string is always what it should be: one 20 byte string. I've been messing with various things but I haven't been able to fix the problem. • WPF - Drag from withing DataTemplate

  I have a ListBox displaying employees with a DataTemplate - it looks very similar to this screenshot. I want to be able to click on the employee photo, drag it and drop it somewhere out of the ListBox. How can I do that? I am not sure how to capture the PreviewMouseLeftButtonDown event of the Image, since it's inside the DataTemplate. Edit: The DataTemplate lives in a separate assembly and the drag/drop logic needs to be in the Window that has the ListBox. Edit2: I am thinking that the right way of doing this is using commands, am I right? Thanks!

• GZipStream not reading the whole file

  I have some code that downloads gzipped files, and decompresses them. The problem is, I can't get it to decompress the whole file, it only reads the first 4096 bytes and then about 500 more. I've checked the downloaded file; it's 13MB when compressed, and contains one XML file. I've manually decompressed the XML file, and the content is all there. But when I do it with this code, it only outputs the very beginning of the XML file. Anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?

  For performance tests I need a way to measure the time needed for a form to load its definition from the DFM. All existing forms inherit a custom form class. To capture the current time, this base class needs overriden methods as "extension points": start of the deserialization process after the deserialization (can be implemented by overriding the Loaded procedure) the moment just before the execution of the OnFormCreate event So the log for TMyForm.Create(nil) could look like: - 00.000 instance created - 00.010 before deserialization - 01.823 after deserialization - 02.340 before OnFormCreate Which TObject (or TComponent) methods are best suited? Maybe there are other extension points in the form creation process, please feel free to make suggestions.

  EDIT: I don't know in advance at which "column" my digits are going to be and I'd like to have a one-liner. Apparently sed doesn't do arithmetic, so maybe a one-liner solution based on awk? I've got a string: (notice the spacing) eh oh 37 and I want it to become: eh oh 36 (so I want to keep the spacing) Using awk I don't find how to do it, so far I have: echo "eh oh 37" | awk '$3>=0&&$3<=99 {$3--} {print}' But this gives: eh oh 36 (the spacing characters where lost, because the field separator is ' ') Is there a way to ask awk something like "print the output using the exact same field separators as the input had"? Then I tried yet something else, using awk's sub(..,..) method: ' sub(/[0-9][0-9]/, ...) {print}' but no cigar yet: I don't know how to reference the regexp and do arithmetic on it in the second argument (which I left with '...' for now). Then I tried with sed, but got stuck after this: echo "eh oh 37" | sed -e 's/\([0-9][0-9]\)/.../' Can I do arithmetic from sed using a reference to the matching digits and have the output not modify the number of spacing characters? Note that it's related to my question concerning Emacs and how to apply this to some (big) Emacs region (using a replace region with Emacs's shell-command-on-region) but it's not an identical question: this one is specifically about how to "keep spaces" when working with awk/sed/etc.

  Hello, I have a large data set that I want to clean up for the user. For example, for project_id 10 & thread_id 30 you see: 10 - 30 - yada yada yada yada yada 10 - 30 - xxxxx 10 - 30 - yada yada yada yada yada What I would like to learn how to do in ruby, is some how create an array and aggreate descriptions under a project_id and thread_id, so instead the output is: 10 - 30 - yada yada yada yada yada - xxxxx - yada yada yada yada yada Any advice on where to get started? This requirement is new for me so I would appreciate your thoughts on what you're thinking the best way to solve this is.Hopefully this can be done in ruby and not sql, as the activity feed is likely going to grow in event types and complexity. • An annoying printing issue with Crystal Reports 2008

  A little background: I have an extremely annoying printing issue with crystal reports. My environment is crystal reports 2008 SP2 on Windows 7 (64bit), Visual studio 2008 and .net framework 3.5 with all the latest updates for everything. The report is designed basically to render a small shelf label of the size (40mm width and 20mm height). In crystal when I set the page size to the above mentioned values and set orientation to portrait and take a preview, everything is displayed as i expect it to be and issuing a print command, it prints absolutely correct. The problem: The problem comes when i print this report from my program (in vb.net), dynamically setting data to some text fields, the result is that crystal somehow changes the print orientation, NOT the paper orientation as in portrait or landscape. Instead of printing from top left towards the bottom right, it rotates the whole output at 90 degrees to the left and reduces everything so small that it is barely visible, although it prints everything out. I have tested it on Intermec PF8t and Zebra GK420d label printers and a whole bunch of laser printers, but with the above stated page settings the output is always the same. Another strange thing that i noticed while experimenting with page sizes if i switch to landscape mode, the print out is correct in its font sizes and positions but then the text gets truncated due to overflowing the page size. Can anyone help me with this. Does crystal has anything like its own print drivers or something. I have tried to ensure to the best of my abilities that it is not a printer driver problem.

• Getting black images with selenium.captureScreenshot

  I'm executing selenium tests with testng, that are started on a remote system with Selenium RC via hudson (with ssh connection). The remote system is windows xp with MKS Toolkit installed, hence ssh. Tests are NOT executed as a windows service. I've tried using both captureScreenshot and captureEntirePageScreenshot methods. The first one always produces a black image. The second one creates the correct screen shot but it only works on Firefox and our tests usually pass on Firefox and fail in other browsers, so it is crucial to capture screen shots for the other browsers (mainly IE and Safari). The tests are ran in parallel, with many browser windows open at the same time. I'm not certain if this is what's causing the problem. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

  i have this function that gives me an output of a number. Encode and then Decode means I want to implement the method in 2 area were one can encode it and other is able to decode it. • feedparser fails during script run, but can't reproduce in interactive python console

  It's failing with this when I run eclipse or when I run my script in iPython: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xe2 in position 32: ordinal not in range(128) I don't know why, but when I simply execute the feedparse.parse(url) statement using the same url, there is no error thrown. This is stumping me big time.   Dear ladies and sirs. This question is related to this one. Given that WCF binding uses net.msmq:// URL, for instance net.msmq://server/private/nc_queue, how can one know what is the actual MSMQ address to which this URL is translated? Is there some kind of a trace that can be activated? Or an external tool that would help one capture the address? Thanks. EDIT1 OK, I owe a clarification. One can talk directly to MSMQ through the respective .NET API. In the case of MSMQ over its native port 1801, I would use this MSMQ address: FormatName:Direct=OS:server\private$\nc_queue When MSMQ is configured over HTTP, the address changes to something like this: FormatName:Direct=http://server/msmq/nc_queue But the WCF binding uses a standard URL to describe the address, like: net.msmq://server/private/nc_queue So, how can I know what is the actual MSMQ address (the one with the FormatName) to which the net.msmq:// is translated?

• Compiling external C++ library (Octave) for iPhone (Fortran compiler missing?)

  A friend of mine asked me if it would be possible to port the Octave project to the iPhone. I haven't compiled an external package for an iPhone project before, so I downloaded the source code, and then used some scripts found on a couple of different Web sites (one, two) to try and build the libraries. However, when I try either of these scripts (which are nearly identical), they eventually die during the configure phase with the following error output: [...snip checks...] checking whether we are using the GNU Fortran 77 compiler... no checking whether accepts -g... no checking how to get verbose linking output from ... configure: WARNING: compilation failed checking for Fortran 77 libraries of ... rm: conftest.dSYM: is a directory checking for dummy main to link with Fortran 77 libraries... rm: conftest.dSYM: is a directory none checking for Fortran 77 name-mangling scheme... configure: error: cannot compile a simple Fortran program See `config.log' for more details. Is the problem that the iPhone SDK/Xcode doesn't include a Fortran cross-compiler, or am I doing something wrong?

• How do I handle dojo datagrid cell updates so I can post them back automatically to the server?

  I am using dojo datagrid to display my data. When the end user edit the cell values it should be updated in the server using ajax calls(when the focus goes out of the cell). Else, I should have a Edit & update/cancel buttons for each row to handle the same feature. But I don know how to place edit & update buttons inside the grid and capture their events. By default dojo updates only local the store value(client side). how can I save the updated cell values into the server? do we need to write any override methods to do so?? I am new to dojo. Any detailed explanation or sample codes would be much appreciated. Could anyone lend a hand to solve this issue?? Thank you Regards, Raj

This was my answer Create a List of all the records using linq Create a command object which would be perform moving files using foreach, invoke a delegate to move the files - use endinvoke to capture any exception and update the db accordingly I was told that command pattern and delegate did not fit the bill here - i was aksed to think and implement a more favorable GoF pattern. Not sure what they were looking for - In this day and age, do candidates keep a lot of info on head as one always has google to find any answer and come up with solution.

• What the performance impact of enabling WebSphere PMI

  I am currently looking at some JProfiler traces from our WebSphere-based application, and am noticing that a significant amount of CPU time is being spent in the class com.ibm.io.async.AsyncLibrary.getCompletionData2. I am guessing, but I am wondering whether this is PMI-related (and we do have this enabled). My knowledge of PMI is limited, as this is managed by another team. Is it expected that PMI can have this sort of impact? (If so) Is the only option to turn it off completely? Or are there some types of data capture that have a particularly high overhead?
