• static library vs dynamic libraries

  Can someone please explain in easy terms what is static library linking vs dynamic library linking other one has a larger memory map than the other or that the static library is used to compile/link with the program that will use it versus being loaded at runtime? I also need to create a static library of a program that I made in vs2008 and give one function interface to access the library. one of the requirements reads as such " * API should be in the form of static library. company xxx will link the library into a third party application to prevent any possible exposure of the code(dll)" how can they say both static and dll at the same time. I have never works with static library before. So please any help would be nice.

• Why calling ISet<dynamic>.Contains() compiles, but throws an exception at runtime?

  Please, help me to explain the following behavior: dynamic d = 1; ISet<dynamic> s = new HashSet<dynamic>(); s.Contains(d); The code compiles with no errors/warnings, but at the last line I get the following exception: Unhandled Exception: Microsoft.CSharp.RuntimeBinder.RuntimeBinderException: 'System.Collections.Generic.ISet<object>' does not contain a definition for 'Contains' at CallSite.Target(Closure , CallSite , ISet`1 , Object ) at System.Dynamic.UpdateDelegates.UpdateAndExecuteVoid2[T0,T1](CallSite site, T0 arg0, T1 arg1) at FormulaToSimulation.Program.Main(String[] args) in As far as I can tell, this is related to dynamic overload resolution, but the strange things are (1) If the type of s is HashSet<dynamic>, no exception occurs. (2) If I use a non-generic interface with a method accepting a dynamic argument, no exception occurs. Thus, it looks like this problem is related particularly with generic interfaces, but I could not find out what exactly causes the problem. Is it a bug in the compiler/typesystem, or legitimate behavior?

• Debugging stack data not assigned to a named variable

  Is there a way to view stack elements like un-assigned return values or exceptions that not assigned to a local variable? (e.g. throw new ...) For example, suppose I have code along the lines of: public String foo(InputStream in) throws IOException { NastyObj obj = null; try { obj = new NastyObj(in); return (obj.read()); } finally { if (obj != null) obj.close(); } } Is there any way to view the return or exception value without stepping to a higher level frame where it is assigned? This is particularly relevant with exceptions because you often have to step back up through a number of frames to find an actual handler. I usually use the Eclipse debugging environment, but any answer is appreciated. Also, if this cannot be done, can you explain why? (JVM, JPDA limitation?)

• Application loses authentication when performing redirect to a virtual directory

  I have the following setup: http://www.example.com/dir1/ and http://www.example.com/dir2/ Each virtual directory is configured on IIS6.0 as an application with own AppPool. When redirecting authenticated user from dir1 to dir2 using response.redirect I lose authentication information for the user and the user is being redirected to the login page. This issue was not coming up with each app (dir1 and dir2) were configured under subdomain, ex: http://dir1.example.com and http://dir2.example.com. I have resolved the issue by adding a machine key to the machine.config file. Can someone explain to me why it's not working on a http://www.example.com/dir1 configuration?

• A resource for installation or setup folder hierarchy of various applications

  Is there a web site (or something else) that has information on folders and their hierarchy where various programs and applications are installed? Please let me explain. I am writing an application that (part of what it does) references certain files installed by other application. To be able to determine the file paths for these folders I have to download and install each application seperatly on my development pc, search for the file I want, and then write its path in my application. This method is very time consuming and, frankly, boring, as it requires downloading and installing each application (some of them in excess of 600MB) and then locating the required file just to be able to "know" its path. So, I was wondering if there is something that could speed things up. like, for example, a website that would have such information. I tried each of the applications own website for information but no dice. Any help from you will be much appreciated. Many thanks

• Do invariant assertions fit into C# programming?

  In the book coders at work, the author asks "How do you use invariants in your code". Please explain what this question means. I saw class invariants on wiki, but the example is in Java and I am not skilled enough in Java to relate this example to C#. .NET 4.0 introduces invariance, covariance, and contravariance and is well explained here. Invariance is so broad. The authors usage of the word seems unit test related. For those that read the book, what does the author mean? Are we talking about making an assumption and simply testing the validity after the unit test?

• Scriptom (groovy) leaves Excel process running - am I doing something wrong?

  I am using the Scriptom extension to Groovy 1.7.0 to automate some processing using Excel 2007 under Windows XP. This always seems to leave an Excel process running despite my calling quit on the excel activeX object. (There is a passing reference to this phenomenon in the Scriptom example documentation too.) Code looks like: import org.codehaus.groovy.scriptom.ActiveXObject; def xls = new ActiveXObject("Excel.Application") xls.Visible = true // do xls stuff xls.Quit() The visible excel window does disappear but an EXCEL process is left in the task manager (and more processes pile up with each run of the script). There are no error message or exceptions. Can anyone explain why the Excel process is left behind and is there any way to prevent it from happening?

• Target not being executed when imported to the main *.proj file

  I use the TFS 2008 build facilities. I have a large MSBuild project (TFSBuild.proj) and I wanted to split it into a few files because it is becoming hard to maintain. I found a strange behavior; when I extracted one of the targets (BeforeInitializeWorkspace) to a separate file and then imported it into the main *.proj file, it was not executed. Although, in my MSBuild log, there was information that the target has been imported and overridden, but hasn't been executed. If I have the same target defined in my main *.proj file, it is executed. Can someone explain why the target isn't executed when imported from a file? Thanks,

• fread() behaves weird

  hi, I have a problem in a C program of mine where after I use fread(), the file pointer goes to the end of the file sometimes. I'll try to explain better - the code looks something like: dummy = ftell(fp); fread(&buf, sizeof(unsigned char), 8, fp); dummy = ftell(fp); where fp is a file pointer to an opened file (opened it with "w+", I'm using it as a binary file and I know i'm supposed to have a "b" in there too, but I heard its not really important to add it..), dummy is just an unsigned long variable, and buf is unsigned char[8] now, when debugging, at the ftell before the fread, dummy is 262062 at the ftell after the fread, dummy is 262640 even though I only 'moved' 8 bytes.. does anyone have any idea what can be the cause of this..? thanks for your help :)

  I hope I don't have to explain what is Silverlight to SO community. Anyway TemplateMonster.com has recently released new Silverlight themes that have been ported from Flash. Silverlight Templates | Template Monster I've noticed a significant lag on my Macbook Pro 13" in loading the template page in Silverlight. And not just Template Monster templates but other silverlight applications on the web as well. Now why is that? I've been hearing how great Silverlight is and how it's a great business platform blah blah blah. And now Microsoft plans to build Windows Phone 7 on top of Silverlight framework. As much as I want to praise Silverlight, so far it's been nothing but a disappointment to me. Could someone enlighten me, what is so great about Silverlight, and why should I put up with that starting up lag? Silverlight was really next up on my "stuff to learn" list this summer, but now I am not so sure...

• ActionScript 2.0 problem with the object's _visible parameter

  Hey guys, I've been trying to build something simple in Flash 8, and I stumbled across something weird I cannot explain: I have an object, and at some point of the program, I want it to be visible (it is invisible at first), so I write: _root.myObj._visible = true; _root.gameOver.swapDepths(_root.getNextHighestDepth()); //so it will be on the top and this works fine, the object becomes visible and etc. What I planned to happen next is that the user presses a button on that same object, and the object will go invisible: on(release) { trace(_root.myObj._visible); _root.myObj._visible = false; trace(_root.myObj._visible); _root.gotoAndPlay("three"); } The trace returns at first true and later on false, so the command works, but oddly the object stays visible, that's what I don't understand. • Mac OS X 10.5+ and POSIX

  Hello, I need to program an authentication module that has to work with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and at the same time needs to be POSIX-compliant. I read here: developer.apple.com/leopard/overview/osfoundations.html that since Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Mac OS X is POSIX-compliant (to POSIX 1003.1), but working under MAC OS X 10.5 Leopard myself, I can't find any trace of my user name neither in /etc/passwd nor in its successor /etc/master.passwd, which is mentioned here: developer.apple.com/mac/library/DOCUMENTATION/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man5/passwd.5.html Instead it says in both files OpenDirectory Service is used, which should be OpenLDAP according to the OpenDirectoryService man-page. Is this still POSIX-compliant ? I guess not. I wonder how Mac OS X would handle my 100% POSIX-compliant code which depends on /etc/passwd ? • Wordpress Database SQL query help needed

  Hi, I've written a PHP script to access the latest item from the wordpress database, which it does. But I need to use it twice, once for the latest item from a specific category, and another from a differerent category... But right now I cannot figure out how to put the query together. The post has a post_parent, which in another table, called wp_term_relationships, is referred to as object_id, and has a term_taxonomy_id, which then relates to a different table, called wp_terms where the term_taxonomy_id is now term_id and then you have the category slug name available to select... I really cannot understand how this query would work though. I've made a really crap mock up of it, to try to "visually" explain what i'm trying to do... SELECT * FROM wp_posts WHERE post_status = 'publish' AND (SELECT term_taxonomy_id FROM wp_term_relationships WHERE object_id = post_parent) AND (SELECT slug FROM wp_terms WHERE term_id = term_taxonomy_id) ORDER BY ID DESC LIMIT 1 Really would appreciate some help... • how to translate Haskell into Scalaz?

  One of my high school students and I are going to try to do a port of Haskell's Parsec parser combinator library into Scala. (It has the advantage over Scala's built-in parsing library that you can pass state around fairly easily because all the parsers are monads.) The first hitch I've come across is trying to figure out how Functor works in scalaz. Can someone explain how to convert this Haskell code: data Reply s u a = Ok a !(State s u) ParseError | Error ParseError instance Functor (Reply s u) where fmap f (Ok x s e) = Ok (f x) s e fmap _ (Error e) = Error e -- XXX into Scala (using Scalaz, I assume). I got as far as sealed abstract class Reply[S, U, A] case class Ok[S, U, A](a: A, state: State[S, U], error: ParseError) extends Reply[S, U, A] case class Error[S, U, A](error: ParseError) extends Reply[S, U, A] and know that I should make Reply extend the scalaz.Functor trait, but I can't figure out how to do that. • Why make anything internal?

  I don't really see the point of making methods or classes internal. In my very limited understanding, all it does is make working with your code very difficult for other programmers. Say I write Big_Important_Class for Project A and make said class internal. Then Bob, working on Project B needs to use my class to have project B work with Project A, but since its internal he can't. As of now this is the only thing I have seen internals do, make things really complicated for the guy working on Project B. I know there has to be a good reason to use internals, but I don't see any. Could someone please explain how they can be a good thing?

• Animated gifs in QMovie

  I'm displaying an animated gif in my application by creating a QLabel, and setting the movie as a QMovie. The problem I'm having is that when the gif is displayed, any part of the image that stays a constant color throughout the animation shows up as the background color. I hope I'm explaining that clearly.   Hi, How can GQL support ORDER BY when it does not support aggregation? The question is - if say the result of the query is more than 1000, does ORDER BY return fully ordered list or only the first 1000 items which is then ordered? To explain the question more: is conceptually MIN() same as query.orderby('asc').fetch(1)? If it is properly ordering the list, then how can it not provide COUNT(), since to properly order the list, GQL possibly has to parse through the whole list - in which case, COUNT() is not an issue at all? Or is item indexed and kept in some type of tree so that it does not need to parse it all the time?

You can not create duplicate fields, but simply add a single extra field, "coupleId", which would have a unique id for each couple; and two rows (one for each person) per couple; then JOIN the table against itself with a constraint like a.coupleId = b.coupleId AND a.id < b.id so that you can condense the data into a single result row for a given couple.

  Ok, firstly this is not about forms this is about consistent layout as a user explores a site. let me explain: If we imagine a (non-ajax) digital camera online store, say someone was on the DSLR section and specified to view the cameras in Gallery mode and order by price. They then click onto the Compact camera's page. It would be in the users interests if the 'views' they selected we're carried over to this new page. Now, i'd say use a session - am i wrong? are there performance issues i should be aware of for a few small session vars ( ie view=1 , orderby=price) ?
