  • Scrum - Responding to traditional RFPs

    Hi all, I've seen many articles about how to put together Agile RFP's and negotiating agile contracts, but how about if you're responding to a more traditional RFP? Any advice on how to meet the requirements of the RFP while still presenting an agile approach? A lot of these traditional RFP's request specific technical implementations, timelines, and costs, while also requesting exact details about milestones and how the technical solutions will be implemented. While I'm sure in traditional waterfall it's normal to pretend that these things are facts, it seems wrong to commit to something like this if you're an agile organization just to get through the initial screening process. What methods have you used to respond to more traditional RFP's? Here's a sample one grabbed from google, http://www.investtoronto.ca/documents/rfp-web-development.pdf Particularly, "3. A detailed work plan outlining how they expect to achieve the four deliverables within the timeframe outlined. Plan for additional phases of development." and "8. The detailed cost structure, including per diem rates for team members, allocation of hours between team members, expenses and other out of pocket disbursements, and a total upset price."

    The application I'm using tries to connect SQL Server named instance running on a dedicated database server. Here's the error I'm getting: The TCP/IP connection to the host <instance_name>, port 1433 has failed. Error: Connection refused: connect. Is the firewall blocking my access or what? Should I dedicate a different port for this application?

  • How to simulate a dial-up connection for testing purposes?

    I have to code a server app where clients open a TCP/IP socket, send some data and close the connection. The data packets are small < 100 bytes, however there is talk of having them batch their transactions and send multiple packets. How can I best simulate a dial-up ut connection (using Delphy & Indy components, just FYI)? Is it as simple as open connection wait a while (what is the definition of "a while"?) close connection

  • Ideas on frameworks in .NET that can be used for job processing and notifications

    Scenario: We have one instance of WCF windows service which exposes contracts like: AddNewJob(Job job), GetJobs(JobQuery query) etc. This service is consumed by 70-100 instances of client which is Windows Form based .NET app. Typically the service has 50-100 inward calls/minute to add or query jobs that are stored in a table on Sql Server. The same service is also responsible for processing these jobs in real time. It queries database every 5 seconds picks up the queued jobs and starts processing them. A job has 6 states. Queued, Pre-processing, Processing, Post-processing, Completed, Failed, Locked. Another responsibility on this service is to update all clients on every state change of every job. This means almost 200+ callbacks to clients per second. Question: This whole implementation is done using WCF Duplex bindings and works perfectly fine on small number of parallel jobs. Problem arises when we scale it up to 1000 jobs at a time. The notifications don't work as expected, it leads to memory overflow etc. Is there any standard framework that can provide a clean infrastructure for handling this scenario?? As far as I understand the definition it is an object that can be defined with a purpose for example a TCP/IP connection uses a Port which is a Software construct. Can anyone refer me to a full definition or give a more robust one?

  • State server in webfarm scenario?

    This is a fairly basic question about state server but assume there are 2 servers behind a load balancer. How do I configure the session state server? So, I have machine1 and machine2. I would assume that I would need to install the state server on 1 machine only and then use the internal IP to refer to that machine. Is this correct? As oppose too, I would not install state server on both machines.

  • Using WAMP's MySQL with Cygwin Ruby on Rails

    I'm trying to install a Rails app on a Cygwin Rails + WAMP MySQL setup, but rake trows an error : Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) Of course, it's trying to connect to MySQL trought a Cygwin socket, and since there's no MySQL server running on Cygwin, it fails. How do I get Rails to connect to WAMP's MySQL (perhaps through TCP/IP instead of a socket) ?

    Good afternoon, I wrote a project to Get Park Queue Info from the IBM MQ, it has producing an error when attempting to close the connection though. It is written in java. Under application in Event Viewer on the MQ machine it displays two errors. They are: “Channel program ended abnormally. Channel program ‘system.def.surconn’ ended abnormally. Look at previous error messages for channel program ‘system.def.surconn’ in the error files to determine the cause of the failure. The other message states: “Error on receive from host rnanaj (10.10.12.34) An error occurred receiving data from rnanaj (10.10.12.34) over tcp/ip. This may be due to a communications failure. The return code from tcp/ip recv() call was 10054 (X’2746’). Record these values.” This must be something how I try to connect or close the connection, below I have my code to connect and close, any ideas??   • WCF code generation for large/complex schema (HR-XML/OAGIS) - is there an alternative?

    Hello, and thank you for reading. I am implementing a WCF Service based on a predefined specification (HR-XML 3.0). As such, I am starting with the schema, and working my way back to code. There are a number of large Schema documents (which import yet more Schema documents) related to my implementation, provided by this specification. I am able to generate code using xsd.exe, by supplying the "main" and "supporting" xsd files as arguments. But there are several issues, and I am wondering if this is the right approach. there are litterally hundreds of classes - the code file is half a meg in size duplicate classes (ex. Type, Type1 - which both represent the same type) there are classes declared as inheriting from a base class, but that base class is not generated/defined I understand that there are limitations to the types of Schema supported by svcutil.exe/xsd.exe when targeting the DataContractSerializer and even XmlSerializer. My question is two-fold: Are code generation "issues" fairly common when dealing with larger, modular xsd files? Has anyone had success with generating data contracts from OAGIS or HR-XML schema? Given the above issues, are there better approaches to this task, avoiding generating code and working with concrete objects? Does it make better sence to read and compose a SOAP message directly, while still taking advantage of the rest of the WCF framework? I understand that I am loosing the convenience of working with .NET objects, and the framekwork-provided (de)serialization; given these losses, would it still be advantageous to base my Service on WCF? Is there some "middle ground" between working with .NET types and pure XML? Thank you very much! -Sasha Borodin DFWHC.org
