• What is the best way to deal with 404s that are all trying to point to the same page that are from an external site?

  I started getting 404s showing up in my Google Webmaster's Tools from a site linking to a specific category but with odd characters at the end of the url. So Something like this: http://example.com/category/puppies%EF%BC%9A.textwidget%E8%A6%81%E7%B4%A0%E7%B7%A8%E9%9B%86 Google Webmaster says that there are about 120 of these links and I can imagine there will be more to come. What is the best way to handle these links from an seo point-of-view? I have heard 301 redirecting too many links at one time can cause Google to ding the site but I don't want this site to continue posting broken links. Any help on this would be appreciated.

• Whats a good setup/toolchain for a project?

  I was thinking, what is needed for a good setup and what are good (free) tools to use? Some of what i came up with are Bug tracking Some good (distributed:P) source control (which means no svn fellas) automated nightly builds or a continuous integration (or anything that automates builds and possibly sends emails when there are build errors) wiki to document decisions, road map or milestones. Something to backup assets (art, sound, etc) What else? and do you have suggestions for any of the above? i pretty much clueless of all of these except for source control

• As a programmer what single discovery has given you the greatest boost in productivity?

  This question has been inspired by my recent discovery/adoption of distributed version control. I started using it (mercurial) just because I liked the idea of still being able to make commits at times when I couldn't connect to the central server. I never expected it would give me a large boost in general productivity, but a pleasant side effect I discovered was that making a new clone every time I started a new task and giving that clone a descriptive folder name is extremely effective at keeping me on task resulting is a noticeable productivity increase. So as a programmer what single discovery has given you the greatest boost in productivity? Extra respect for answers which involve tools or practices that aren't so obvious from the outside!

• Developing GLSL Shaders?

  I want to create shaders but I need a tool to create and see the visual result before I put them into my game. As to determine if there is something wrong with my game or if it's something with the shader I created. I've looked at some like Render Monkey and OpenGL Shader Designer from what I recall of Render Monkey it had a way to define your own attributes (now as "in" for vertex shaders = 330) easily though I can't remember to what extent. Shader Designer requires a plugin that I didn't even bother to look at creating cause it's an external process and plugin. Are there any tools out there that support a scripting language and I could easily provide specific input such as float movement = sin(elapsedTime()); and then define in float movement; in the vertex shader ? It'd be cool if anyone could share how they develop shaders, if they just code away and then plug it into their game hoping to get the result they wanted.

Want to start out platform agnostic, not a mobile app. There will be gridwork type of 3D objects and diagraming being represented - think AutoCAD or Minority Report.   I'm a web developer. When I start designing a site, I use a framework to handle templating for me, even if it's just rack + erubis. What do non-developers do? If you want to implement a site in HTML and CSS without a framework running on a webserver, without frames, and without WYSYWIG tools like Dreamweaver... how do you avoid copy-and-pasting the HTML of your navigation (for example) on every single page you're writing? I feel stupid asking this because it seems like their must be an obvious answer, but for the life of me, I can't think of one right now.

  I'm trying to install Socialengine (clean install, empty database, legal license key), but I ran into this error message at Step 3 of the installation: Step 3: Setup MySQL Database Mysqli statement execute error : Prepared statement needs to be re-prepared I found a troubleshooting artice about "Bug in MySQLi Extension Causes Apache 500 Error" at http://www.socialengine.net/blog/article?id=161&article=Bug-in-MySQLi-Extension-Causes-Apache-500-Error I uploaded the fixed file and try to install again, but it still doesn't work. It terminates at Step 3 again with the same error message. I would be very grateful if you could help me. Thanks.

• How to recover organic position in Google results after server down?

  I have several sites that were doing quite well in terms of organic SEO rankings. I have the important sites setup in Google's Webmaster tools. Long story short, the system was down for about two weeks. Now in AdSense and Analytics, I am seeing that the page views are SLOWLY increasing. and I would like to know if there is anything I can do now to try to expedite the process of regaining those positions. Since there were several errors from that server, is it possible that Google will now rank any site from that IP address lower due to those two weeks of errors?   How do I get my webpage not to go back when they hit the back button and are logged out and how can I add a web page to be blocked like FACEBOOK doesn't let you get into their site with out having a page or a account with them, and if you try to put something in the url and try to go to something on their site it gives you a web page that says "you have to be logged in first" . Like I don't want someone going to the url of the "index" page before they have signed up as a member they need to make an account first then they can have access to the "index" page. How do I do this. I have a website so far that has a database and the website has 5 pages so far and two of them which is the login and sign up page which are both used with php and mysql and they work fine. How do I restrict access to the main website by first having the users sign up with me for an account.

My only experience with servers and hosting is uploading through FTP and playing around with CPanel/WHM a little. The role's I'm going for are web development PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS type roles, but in recent interviews I've been asked questions about setting up things on the server, that I had no idea what was being said... which wasn't ideal! Without knowing more than I do, it's hard to explain what exactly I'm looking to learn, but it's basically just the server elements I should know as a web developer? If you're a web developer, do you have any dealing with the server apart from uploading files, and if so, what? Are things like Subversion(SVN) and version control systems often set up by the web development team, could that be what they were talking about?

  This is a question mainly for Symbian developers. I would like to create some demo apps to put on my mobile phone and have some kind of nice icon on the application grid. If I've understood correctly, the application grid icon needs to be in SVG Tiny format. The problem is I don't have any toolset to create such a format. There don't seem to be any free tools to edit or convert to SVG Tiny format. The cheapest option around seems to be e-Picture Pro for $169. Inkscape has had some initiative to make it SVGT-compliant, but not much seems to be happening there lately. So the question in short is how do you create your icons for your Symbian apps (or other uses that require SVG Tiny)?

I am thinking of trying to go to his place, at least try as I want to move in Business Intelligence field in SSRS and SSIS. I just want to know that is it possible for me to get my head around those things in 4 months because I have no idea how they work and how hard it will be for me to pick up those things. Can I do that? I just want to know from experienced people if I can move towards that field? At least how should I start? In my area there are shortages of person, so once I know the stuff I can get into junior jobs easily but I want to know from experienced people.

  Possible Duplicate: What tools do you use for 2D art/sprite creation? What do you folks suggest for creating sprite graphics and sprite sheets? I fiddle with pixelformer and tilestudio. Pixelfromer has a kicken interface, it is quick and easy to make graphics, but a bit cumbersom if you want to make a spritemap. Tile Studio is a interesting mix or tiles and maps, but it is a bit buggy and basic. The Adobe series, just don't really seem to handle tiny graphics well. (there is a previous posting of this question existing, but it is a year old and I was hoping for further/updated input from the community)

  I have an awesome URL, I've had it since the mid 90's, and up until around 2002 I was having an awesome time writing music reviews and features into static pages and adding their URL to static index pages and everything was just great. Then things got complicated really fast, and for one reason or another I handed the site over to a very talented friend who turned it into a db based site run by cf. Now, here I am around twelve years later putting it all back together using mysql, php and css on a need-to-learn basis and even though I'm sooo close to where I want it to be I realize, erm, it should have been written using mysqli etc etc ad infinitum. So I'm wondering at what point do I just give in and hire a developer to take over, how much does it even cost, and how do I know I'm working with someone who is better than I am?

  i have installed apache2, actual php version, mysql server and vsftp on my new ubuntu server. I also installed wordpress and gave the user www-data all rights for /var/www/* and put it to 755. I hooked the Domain to the server with * and @ a-record. Now, everytime when i open a Page, it says 404 file not found on server. i dont know how to fix this. can you help me? Edit: I think its because mod_rewrite. i installed mod_rewrite with: sudo a2enmod rewrite sudo service apache2 restart but it still doesnt work.

• Using replacement to get possible outcomes to then search through HUGE amount of data

  I have a database table holding 40 million records (table A). Each record has a string a user can search for. I also have a table with a list of character replacements (table B) i.e. i = Y, I = 1 etc. I need to be able to take the string a user is searching for, iterate through each letter and create an array of every possible outcome (the users string, then each outcome with alternative letters used). I need to check for alternatives on both lower and uppercase letters in the word A search string can be no longer than 10 characters long. I'm using PHP and a MySQL database. Does anyone have any thoughts / articles / guidance on doing this in an efficient way?

• Remove home page from Google cache

  The Google Webmaster Tools Remove URL section allows you to specify a page URL to be removed from the index, or cache, or both. However, I want to remove just the home page, which is / I want to remove it from the cache because it is indexed when the "under construction" page was up. This URL is not recognised by the Remove URL section as an individual page. Instead Google assumes you want to remove the entire website from the index. I've specified /index.php and /index.html to be removed from the cache, but this is not the URL listed in the search results for the home page I want removed from the cache.

• Site loads Extremely slowly over HTTPS; loads perfectly over HTTP - Sudden and new issue

  My business' website suddenly started loading extremely slowly over HTTPS last night and continues through today. The facts: Page loadtime via HTTPS - 2 minutes +, HTTP - 3 seconds max. NO updates were done on any site files in the past 2 weeks. This is on Shared Hosting HTTPS has worked perfectly over the past 9 months then suddenly failed yesterday. Hosting company and SSL issuer say there are no problems on their end. - Searches for others having similar issues return no results, it appears to be just me... Site is primarily run via php/mysql Currently attempted troubleshooting: Tried all major browsers and different versions - same result. Tried 2 separate ISPs - same result. Tried proxies - same result. Tried 3 separate computers - same result. I'm basically at a total loss here. Does anyone know what could cause such a thing to happen? Please help guide troubleshooting.

• wxPython, Threads, and PostEvent between modules

  I'm relatively new to wxPython (but not Python itself), so forgive me if I've missed something here. I'm writing a GUI application, which at a very basic level consists of "Start" and "Stop" buttons that start and stop a thread. This thread is an infinite loop, which only ends when the thread is stopped. The loop generates messages, which at the moment are just output using print. The GUI class and the infinite loop (using threading.Thread as a subclass) are held in separate files. What is the best way to get the thread to push an update to something like a TextCtrl in the GUI? I've been playing around with PostEvent and Queue, but without much luck.   In a project I have the following relation between BO and GUI By e.g. G could represent a graphic with time lines, C a TimeLine curve, P - points of that curve and T the time that represents each point. Each GUI object is associated with the BO corresponding object. When T changes GUI P captures the Changed event and changes its location. So, when G should be modified, it modifies internally its objects and as result T changes, P moves and the GuiG visually changes, everything is OK. But there is an inconvenient of this architecture... BO should not be recreated, because this will breack the link between BO and GUIO. In particular, GUI P should always have the same reference of T. If in a business logic I do by e.g. P1.T = new T(this.T + 10) GUI_P1 will not move anymore, because it wait an event from the reference of former P1.T object, that does not belongs to P1 anymore. So the solution was to always modify the existing objects, not to recreate it. But here is an other inconvenient: performance. Say I have a ready newC object that should replace the older one. Instead of doing G1.C = newC I should do foreach T in foreach P in C replace with T from P from newC. Is there an other more optimal way to do it?

  I'm looking for suggestions on how to go about building an application that uses R for analytics, table generation, and plotting. What I have in mind is an application that: displays various data tables in different tabs, somewhat like in Excel, and the columns should be sortable by clicking. takes user input parameters in some dialog windows. displays plots dynamically (i.e. user-input-dependent) either in a tab or in a new pop-up window/frame Note that I am not talking about a general-purpose fron-end/GUI for exploring data with R (like say Rattle), but a specific application. Some questions I'd like to see addressed are: Is an entirely R-based approach even possible ( on Windows ) ? The following passage from the Rattle article in R-Journal intrigues me: It is interesting to note that the first implementation of Rattle actually used Python for implementing the callbacks and R for the statistics, using rpy. The release of RGtk2 allowed the interface el- ements of Rattle to be written directly in R so that Rattle is a fully R-based application If it's better to use another language for the GUI part, which language is best suited for this? I'm looking for a language where it's relatively "painless" to build the GUI, and that also integrates very well with R. From this StackOverflow question How should I do rapid GUI development for R and Octave methods (possibly with Python)? I see that Python + PyQt4 + QtDesigner + RPy2 seems to be the best combo. Is that the consensus ? Anyone have pointers to specific (open source) applications of the type I describe, as examples that I can learn from?

• What is the event dispatching thread?

  I know what "thread" means and if I understand the event dispatching thread (EDT) as "just a thread", it explains a lot but, apparently, it does not explain everything. I do not understand what is special about this thread. For example I do not understand why we should start a GUI in a the EDT? Why the "main" thread is bed for GUI? Well, if we just do not want to occupy the main thread why we cannot start GUI just in "another thread" why it should be some "special" thread called EDT? Then I do not understand why we cannot start the EDT like any other thread? Why we should use some special tool (called invokeLater). And why GUI, unlike any other thread, does not start immediately. We should wait until it is ready to accept our job. Is it because EDT can, potentially execute several task simultaneously? If you decide to answer this question, could you pleas use a really simple terminology because otherwise, I am afraid, I will not be able to understand the answer.
