• RoundhousE now supports Oracle, SQL2000

  RoundhousE, the database migration software that is based on sql scripts has added support for Oracle and SQL 2000.  There have also been numerous other little things, including better logging and a script run errors table. The script errors table captures what went wrong when/if your scripts are not quite up to par or there is some other issue.   I am trying to install Oracle 12c database on my machine running Fedora 20. And I am encountering this problem: "[INS-30131] Initial setup required for the execution of installer validations failed." And when we see the details then it is like this: Cause - Failed to access the temporary location. Action - Ensure that the current user has required permissions to access the temporary location. Additional Information: - Framework setup check failed on all the nodes - Cause: Cause Of Problem Not Available   - Action: User Action Not Available Summary of the failed nodes fedora - Version of exectask could not be retrieved from node "fedora"   - Cause: Cause Of Problem Not Available   - Action: User Action Not Available To eliminate this error I have tried various measures including the change of permission of the tmp folder and restarting the computer but none is working. • cx_Oracle makes subprocess give OSError

  I am trying to use the cx_Oracle module with python 2.6.6 on ubuntu Maverick, with Oracle 11gR2 Enterprise edition. I am able to connect to my oracle db just fine, but once I do that, the subprocess module does not work anymore. Here is an iPython session that reproduces the problem... Even if I have closed the connection to the database. Looking around, I found http://bugs.python.org/issue1731717 as somewhat related to this issue, but I am not dealing with threads here. I don't know if cx_Oracle is. Moreover, the above issue mentions that adding a time.sleep(1) fixes it, but it didn't help me. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

• What are the CS fundamentals behind package/dependency management?

  Often I hear about situations where companies are developing extensable in house software (the dreaded enterprise 'framework') which is supposed to support multiple 'plugins' from diffirent teams. Usually this ends up being a half baked solution that does not really work due to compatibility prolems between addins, or between addins and the framework itself. Usually this means QA have to 'rubber stamp' a global set of versions accross all plugins, or more usually plugins are released and stuff breaks in nasty ways. This problem has been solved before however, for example the package management systems like apt for debian linux. I suspect that the reason it works is that it is built from the start on a known 'Computer Science-y' concept. My question is what is it?

• pro*C in oracle XE

  I downloaded the free express edition of oracle, Oracle XE. I couldn't find the pro*c compiler in this edition. I read somewhere that oracle 9i client has pro*C, So I presumed that oracle client for 10g XE should have it too and downloaded it. But to my disappointment, I can't find it there too. :(. Is there a way to download the older oracle 9i and use it connect to 10g XE without any compatibility problems?. Or is it possible to download the pro*C compiler alone?. I don't want to download the standard editions as they are too large(2 GB). Thanks.

• When is it good to start using project management applications?

  Hello, I was wondering, when is the right time or the correct project size to start using project management applications ( like Redmine or Trac ). I have a serious project, for now it's only me developing, but I use redmine to set my project versions, issues, and estimations. I think it's a good idea, because you never know when somebody else is going to join the team, and also allows me to organize myself effectively. I ask this question because I was Teaching Assistant at my university for one year in a row for a course, and I got questions about this very very often. While I'm a believer of the KISS principle, I think that learning to use this tools early is a win-win most of the time. I really believe that we can avoid this question to become argumentative, and that there's somewhat of a consensus about this issue, which I consider quite important in todays software development world. So, when is the right time ? what is the correct project/team size ?

  As a programmer, I feel burnt out if the management give me spec after spec, day after day. I think I can code 6 hours a day very focused, but non-stop coding does burn me out a little, especially it is 1 year or 18 months non-stop. A mere 1 week or 2 week vacation per year isn't going to help much. Sometimes I want to take some time to learn new things, or just to take a break for a month so as to re-charge, like back in college when we have holidays for 1 month during winter or 2.5 months during summer. What do you think?

• What's the best way to capture output from SQL Management Studio and paste it into an Outlook email?

  I'm constantly executing ad-hoc queries in SQL Management Studio and need to send the results to people via email. This happens several times a day so I'm looking for the best way to copy the results of the query from the results window into an Outlook email body so that it can be formatted in a reader friendly manner. I haven't come up with anything that works well for me. When it really matters, I end up going into Excel, executing the query from within there and then attaching the resulting spreadsheet. I'm looking for something that I can do without involving Excel if possible. Any ideas?

• How to modify the Title Bar text for SQL Server Management Studio?

  Sometimes I keep multiple instances of SQL Server Management Studio 2005 open. I might have the dev database open in one, and the production database open in another. These appear in the Windows task bar with the text "Microsoft SQL Serve...", which means it's impossible to differentiate between them unless I open the window and scroll the Object Explorer up to see what server the window is actually connected to. Is ther any way that I can get the window to display the server name first, and then the name of the application? Like "Dev-DB.database_name - Microsoft SQL Serve..." or whatever?

• Is there a good web-based project management app with scheduling?

  Ideally something as intuitive as basecamp, with good usability and accessibility. The best I've seen is huddle.net but it's still weak in several areas. Must have: Projects - ability to add people & tasks and schedule tasks to people Calendar - showing when people are busy or available Role based access - Admins and non-admins History - ability to look back at all history Anyone seen a product that's worth a look? Clarification: Must be hosted i.e. not require my own hardware or IT staff I'm looking for an app to schedule people with specific tasks at specific times and monitor the outcomes. I'm already using Mingle (for stories), Basecamp (to run the business) and Exceptional (to track bugs). I'm not looking for a bug-tracking system or a story management application (I already looked at VersionOne, but chose Mingle due to it's nicer UI) My response to the answer being auto-selected: I still don't feel the answer (chosen for me) is the correct one. It's a useful list but little more, and doesn't provide the solution I was seeking.

  I've never been able to find a good script or plugin for sql server Management Studio (2005 and or 2008) for a very common scripting need: specifying a few/all rows in a table and scripting their insert. You can guess my story: I've got some configuration data in my dev db and I need to script it for deployment to UAT and then production. I've found a few cludgy systems in the past, that were more trouble than they were worth. I need something free and unobtrusive. Once I find it I'll share it with the other 20 developers in my shop who are annoyed by this. Aren't we all annoyed by this by the way? What is the best, easiest, free, way to specify a few/all rows in a table and get a script their insert?

We will use the subdeployment in this example to target the following connection factory and JMS queue to the JMS server we created earlier. Services > Messaging > JMS Modules Select TestJMSModule Select the Subdeployments  tab and New Subdeployment Name: TestSubdeployment Press Next Here you can select the target(s) for the subdeployment. You can choose either Servers (i.e. WebLogic managed servers, such as the soa_server1) or JMS Servers such as the JMS Server created earlier. As the purpose of our subdeployment in this example is to target a specific JMS server, we will choose the JMS Server option. You need to run the WLST commands from "oracle_common/common/bin/wlst.sh" (ex: /home/Oracle/Middleware/oracle_common/common/bin/wlst.sh) This is documented in the OWSM doc (Security And Administrator's Guide) under the section "Accessing the Web Services Custom WLST Commands". Note: This location is different from the location from where you run the SOA WLST commands. If you try to run the OWSM WLST command from the wrong location - you will see errors like the following: "The MBean ,@ oracle.wsm:*,name=WSMDocumentManager,type=Repository was not found"
