• Warm Reception By Partners at EMEA Manageability Forum

  For the EMEA Partners that were able to attend the event in Istanbul Turkey, thank you for your attendance and feedback at the event. As you can see, the weather kept most of inside during the event and at times there was even some snow.  And while it may have been chilly outside, there was a warm reception from Partners who traveled from all over EMEA to hear from other Oracle Specialized Partners and subject matter experts about the opportunities and benefits of Oracle Enterprise Manager and Exadata Specialization. Here you can see David Robo, Oracle Technology Director for Manageability kicking off the event followed later by Patrick Rood, Oracle Indirect Manageability Business. A special thank you to all the Partner speakers including Ron Tolido, VP and CTO of Application Services Continental Europe Capgemini, who delivered a very innovative keynote where many in attendance learned that Black Swans do exist. And while at break, interactivity among partners continued and it was great to see such innovative partners who had listed their achieved specializations on their business cards. Here we can see Oracle Enterprise Manager customer, Turkish Oracle User Group board member and Blogger Gokhan Atil sharing his product experiences with others attending. Additionally, Christian Trieb of Paragon Data, also shared with other Partners what the German Oracle User Group (DOAG) was doing around manageability and invitation to submit papers for their next event. Just after his plane landed and 1 hour Turkish taxi experience to the event location, Julian still took the time to sit down with me and provide some extra insights on his experiences of managing the enterprise infrastructure with Oracle Enterprise Manager. • Introducing the Oracle Parcel Service&ndash;Example/Reference Application

  Over the last few weeks the product management team has been working on a webcast series that is airing in EMEA.  It is a 5-episode series where we talk about different features of WebLogic and show how to build applications that take advantage of these features.  Each session is focused at a different layer of the technology stack, and you can find the schedule below. • BDD (Behavior-Driven Development) tools for .Net

  For several years, I use TDD (Test-Driven Development) to produce code. I no longer plans to work without using TDD. The use of TDD significantly increases code quality, but does not guarantee that the code is the code that corresponds to the requirements specifications (write the "right code" with BDD as opposed to the write "code right" with BDD). Dan North has described in an article in published in 2006 the foundations of the BDD (Behavior-Driven Development). In this article, he introduces the formalism "When Given Then". This formalism is used in all tools dedicated to BDD. This is a short list of open source BDD tools that you can use with .Net : SpecFlow: Here you can find an article in MSDN Magazine and 2 webcasts (http://channel9.msdn.com/posts/ASPNET-MVC-With-Community-Tools-Part-2-Spec-Flow-and-WatiN and http://channel9.msdn.com/posts/ASPNET-MVC-With-Community-Tools-Part-3-More-Spec-Flow-and-WatiN) published on Chanel9. • BIEE Drilling Down and then Across

  Slightly off topic today but if you are working with OBIEE in conjunction with BIP its not that far off. Some of you may know, I now get to play with the whole BI suite, I have been for nearly 2 years. Today, I was working with BIEE and wanted to share what I thought was a neat trick. I have to thank Rob Lindsley on our team for the pointers to get it working. The problem I had was that I had set up a drill down hierarchy that took the user down a couple of levels to the bottom project number level. I needed for the user to then be able to click the project number to navigate across to another more detailed report on that project. By default, there is no link, you are at the bottom of a hierarchical drill! There is nothing you can do in the data model (that Im aware of) but you can use a neat trick to get BIEE to allow you to navigate from the bottom rung of the hierarchy. Add the bottom level column to an Answer report. Go into the column properties and set the navigation target. The trick is to then set the current column properties as the system-wide default for that column. You can then actually delete the column from your report. Now as you drill down the hierarchy and reach what was the bottom you will still have a link for the user to punch over to the detail report, sweeeet! The other benefit is that whenever you add the column to a report the link will be available to the detail report, unless you want to override it of course.

• Libraries for eclipse with CCSv5 from Texas Instruments

  My system is Ubuntu 11.10 64bit and i have to run a 32bit version of eclipse to use the TI plugins for CCSv5 but it doesn't work. I tried to run eclipse in a 62bit java environment but it doesn't even start. Now I got "java version "1.6.0_30"" from Sun in 32bit and now eclipse starts but can't use the TI plug ins and I get the following errors in bash: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/menuproxies/libappmenu.so: falsche ELF-Klasse: ELFCLASS64 /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgvfsdbus.so: falsche ELF-Klasse: ELFCLASS64 Failed to load module: /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgvfsdbus.so and this in a popup-window when Itry to use the plugin: The selected wizard could not be started. Plug-in com.ti.ccstudio.project.ui was unable to load class com.ti.ccstudio.project.ui.internal.wizards.importexport.temp.ExternalProjectImportWizard. • Why doesn't Gradle include transitive dependencies in compile / runtime classpath?

  I'm learning how Gradle works, and I can't understand how it resolves a project transitive dependencies. For now, I have two projects : projectA : which has a couple of dependencies on external libraries projectB : which has only one dependency on projectA No matter how I try, when I build projectB, gradle doesn't include any projectA dependencies (X and Y) in projectB's compile or runtime classpath. I've only managed to make it work by including projectA's dependencies in projectB's build script, which, in my opinion does not make any sense. These dependencies should be automatically attached to projectB. I'm pretty sure I'm missing something but I can't figure out what. I've read about "lib dependencies", but it seems to apply only to local projects like described here, not on external dependencies. • Drag/drop mail folder from Outlook to Explorer export to .pst file?

  While working on large-scale projects, I collect all mail conversations pertaining to the project in a separate folder within Outlook. When the project is completed, I want to archive the entire folder, for reference purposes. So my question is this: Does anyone know of a tool/plugin for Outlook 2007/2010 that allows you to drag/drop a mailfolder from within Outlook, to a Windows Explorer window, exporting the folder as a .pst file, preserving folder structure and timestamps on mails? I am doing this manually at the moment, but having a tool that would use simple drag/drop-functionality would greatly simplify my workflow for handling project-specific mail.

• iOS: Using Jenkins for nightly internal builds (TestFlight), plus frequent client builds

  I'm an iOS dev, working for a small agency. I'm currently on a few smaller projects where I'm the only developer. We recently acquired a Jenkins server, but each project is left to fend for themselves as for how to use it. I'd like to use it for making and distributing builds. My ideal would be: Every commit is built as a single IPA that is placed in a HTTP-accessible location. (It only needs to keep the latest one, otherwise the disk would fill up — some of our apps are 500MB or more.) Once a day it makes a build, signs it with our internal provisioning profile, tacks a build number onto the end of the version number, and sends it to our internal TestFlight team. When manually prompted, it builds the latest commit, gives it a manually specified version number, signs it with the client's provisioning profile and sends it to TestFlight. I'm pretty new to Jenkins. The developer who set up the server is running it on one of our projects, so I know it has the right stuff installed to do Xcode builds. I believe he's only using it to run unit tests though, not to do any of the code signing, IPA creation or TestFlight stuff. So my questions: I've listed three distinct kinds of build. How does Jenkins cope with that? I see there's a "build triggers" section in the config for a Jenkins project, but it doesn't seem to mention different types of build. Should I just set up multiple Jenkins projects, called "App X (continuous)", "App X (nightly)" and "App X (client)"? How do I specify the provisioning profile through Jenkins? If there isn't a way, I guess I could make different configurations in the Xcode project… Has anyone else used Jenkins to actually do the release (i.e. build and push to TestFlight) of beta builds of their apps? Is it a good idea? Or should I continue just doing it manually?

• Accessing A Shared Directory That Has An Account White List

  I'm on a LAN here at work and I have my desktop sharing some of my project folders. I can access the computer via \\ComputerIP\, but I can't actually open any of the folders. Upon attempting, I get the error: Windowns cannot access \ComputerIP\ProjectFolder You do not have permission to access \ComputerIP\ProjectFolder. Contact your network administrator to request access. For more information about permissions, see Windows Help and Support Now, this is understood considering I've made it so that you had to utilize the "Project" credentials to connect. I have a user account on my main computer hosting these shared folders that gives full access to the folders if you are this "Project" user. I can Remote Desktop the computer just fine from my laptop using either set of credentials. When I try to open these folders it doesn't give me the option to attempt to apply any credentials like it does when I remote desktop. How am I supposed to gain access to these folders?

• Munq is for web, Unity is for Enterprise

  The Unity Application Block (Unity) is a lightweight extensible dependency injection container with support for constructor, property, and method call injection. It’s a great library for facilitating Inversion of Control and the recent version supports AOP as well. However, when it comes to performance, it’s CPU hungry. In fact it’s so CPU hungry that it makes it impossible to make it work at Internet Scale. I was investigating some CPU issue on a portal that gets around 3MM hits per day and I found unusually high CPU. Here’s why: I did some CPU profiling on my open source project Dropthings and found that the highest CPU is consumed by Unity’s Resolve<>(). There’s no funky use of Unity in the project. Straightforward Register<>() and Resolve<>(). But as you can see, Resolve<>() is consuming significantly high CPU even after the site is warm and has been running for a while. Then I tried Munq, which is a basic Dependency Injection Container. It has everything you will usually need in a regular project. It boasts to be the fastest DI out there. So, I converted all Unity code to Munq in Dropthings and did a CPU profile and Whala!   There’s no trace of any Munq calls anywhere. That proves Munq is a lot faster than Unity.

• Do licenses matter if there's nobody around to enforce them?

  Suppose that the original creators can't (or won't) enforce a license on their software/code, but that work is still popular. I guess if you want to visualize it, I'll throw out a convoluted hypothetical: Imagine a very small group of developers that released a code project under an open-source license. The repository was hosted on their servers. However, the everybody on the immediate development team passed away in a tragic accident or something. Their servers shut down after this happened. The project had a fairly large user base, and so others began to host the last revision on their own servers for others to download. (Yes, I have an active imagination) Does abiding by the license simply become a matter of morality by its users, or can there still exist a legal penalty when there is no one user or group to enforce it? Could anything be done if an unscrupulous user decided to branch off the project and use it under a different license? I am not looking for legal advice -- I am simply curious about how software licenses work. I tend to think of strange situations and wonder what would happen in those scenarios.

• Dependency Injection/IoC container practices when writing frameworks

  I've used various IoC containers (Castle.Windsor, Autofac, MEF, etc) for .Net in a number of projects. I have found they tend to encourage a number of bad practices. Are there any established practices for IoC container use, particularly when providing a platform/framework? My aim as a framework writer is to make code as simple and as easy to use as possible. I'd rather write one line of code to construct an object than ten or even just two. For example, a couple of code smells that I've noticed and don't have good suggestions to: Large number of parameters (5) for constructors. Creating services tends to be complex; all of the dependencies are injected via the constructor - despite the fact that the components are rarely optional (except for maybe in testing). Lack of private and internal classes; this one may be a specific limitation of using C# and Silverlight, but I'm interested in how it is solved. It's difficult to tell what a frameworks interface is if all the classes are public; it allows me access to private parts that I probably shouldnt touch. Coupling the object lifecycle to the IoC container. It is often difficult to manually construct the dependencies required to create objects. Object lifecycle is too often managed by the IoC framework. I've seen projects where most classes are registered as Singletons. You get a lack of explicit control and are also forced to manage the internals (it relates to the above point, all classes are public and you have to inject them). For example, .Net framework has many static methods. such as, DateTime.UtcNow. Many times I have seen this wrapped and injected as a construction parameter. Depending on concrete implementation makes my code hard to test. Injecting a dependency makes my code hard to use - particularly if the class has many parameters. How do I provide both a testable interface, as well as one that is easy to use? What are the best practices?

  I am changing my domain from foo.com to foobar.org. I used a Redirect permanent in my apache config file, and then restarted apache. When I try to access the old domain foo.com, I get a 403 error. • What would you do to improve the working of a small Development team?

  My company is having a reshuffle and I'm applying for my boss' job as he's moved up the ladder. The new role would give me a chance to move our development team into the 21st century and I'd like to make sure that: I can provide sensible suggestions in the interview to get the job so I can fix the team If I get the job I can actually enact some changes to actually improve the lives of the developers and their output. I want to know what I can suggest to improve the way we work, because I think it's a mess but every time I've suggested a change it's been shot down because any time spend implementing the change would be time that isn't spent developing software. Here is the state of play at the moment: My team consists of 3-4 developers (Mainly Java but I do some .Net work) Each member of the team is usually works on 2-3 projects at a time We are each responsible for the entire life cycle of the project from design to testing. Usually only one person works on a project (Although we have the odd project that will have more than one person working on it.) Projects tend to be bespoke to single customer, or are really heavilly reliant on a particular customer environment. We have 2-3 "Products" which we evolve to meet customer requirements. We use SVN for source control We don't do continuous integration (I'd like to start) We use a really basic bug tracker for internal issue tracking (I'd like to move to an issue/task management system) Any changes that bring a sudden dip in revenue generation will probably be rejected, the company isn't structured for development most of the rest of the technical team's jobs can be broken down to install this piece of hardware, configure that piece of hardware and once a job is done it's done and you never have to look at it again. This mentality has crept into development team because it's part of the company culture.

• SDL & Windows 8 Metro WinRT

  I am just beginning to dip my tow into game programming and have been reading up on SDL, SFML, OpenGL, XNA, MonoGame and of course DirectX. (Needless to say there are a lot of choices out there) As much as I like SFMLs syntax I have chosen to read up and start with SDL as it is pretty ubiquitous and available on every platform (Windows, Linux, Mac) and also available on portable devices (Android, iOS) with the current exception of WinPhone 7 After that pre-amble here is my question. I notice that the docs say that for the windows platform the SDL API calls through to DirectX for higher perf. ( http://www.libsdl.org/intro.en/whatplatforms.html ) Microsoft have said that for Metro Game Apps you can only use DirectX (which means no XNA, no OpenGL, no SFML, etc, etc) My question is: If SDL just wraps DirectX calls will I (we) be able to use SDL to bring games to the new Metro WinRT environment and Windows 8 marketplace? This would be great if possible. Additionally as WinPhone 8 is supposedly built on Win8 then this could mean SDL would be available on the win phone in the future too. EDIT: Based on DeadMG's answer I have installed Visual Studio 11 (beta) in Windows 8 Consumer Preview (CP) and went file-New to check project types. The project types: "Blank Application", "Direct2D Application" and "Direct3D Application" look of interest. I have selected "Direct2D App" but SDL generates its own window when you call: SDL_INIT Is it possible to link/setup the SDL window to point to the Direct2D surface in the this project?
