• Need Advice on building the database. all in one table or split?

  hello, i am developing an application for a real-estate company. the problem i am facing is about implementing the database. however i am just confused on which way to adopt i would appreciate if you could help me out in reasoning the database implementation. here is my situation. a) i have to store the property details in the database. b) the properties have approximately 4-5 categories to which it will belong for ex : resedential, commnercial, industrial etc. c) now the categories have sub-categories. for example. a residential category will have sub category such as. Apartment / Independent House / Villa / Farm House/ Studio Apartment etc. and hence same way commercial and industrial or agricultural will too have sub-categories. d) each sub-categories will have to store the different values. like a resident will have features like Bedrooms/ kitchens / Hall / bathroom etc. the features depends on the sub categories. for an example on how i would want to implement my application you can have a look at this site. http://www.magicbricks.com/bricks/postProperty.html i could possibly think of the solution like this. a) create four to five tables depending upon the categories which will be existing(the problem is categories might increase in the future). b) create different tables for all the features, location, price, description and merge the common property table into one. for example all the property will have the common entity such as location, total area, etc. what would you advice for me given the current situation. thank you

  Hello Im using OLE DB Source for get rows from a dBase IV file and it works, then I split the data and perform a group by with aggregate component. So I obtain a row with two columns with "null" value : CompanyID | CompanyName | SubTotal | Tax | TotalRevenue Null Null 145487 27642.53 173129.53 this success because all rows have been grouped with out taking care about the firsts columns and just Summing the valuable columns, so I need to change that null for default values as CompanyID = "100000000" and CompanyName = "Others". • How to maintain a job history using Quartz scheduler

  I'd like to maintain a history of jobs that were scheduled by a Quartz scheduler containing the following properties: 'start time', 'end time', 'success', 'error'. There are two interfaces available for this: ITriggerListener and IJobListener (I'm using the C# naming convention for interfaces because I'm using Quartz.NET but the same question could be asked for the Java version). IJobListener has a JobToBeExecuted and a JobWasExecuted method. The latter provides a JobExecutionException so that you know when something went wrong. However, there is no way to correlate JobToBeExecuted and JobWasExecuted. Suppose my job runs for ten minutes. I start it at t0 and t0+2 (so they overlap). I get two calls to JobToBeExecuted and insert two start times into my history table. When both jobs finish at t1 and t1+2 I get two calls to JobWasExecuted. How do I know what database record to update in each call (to store an end time with its corresponding start time)? ITriggerListener has another problem. There is no way to get any errors inside the TriggerComplete method when a job failed. How do I get the desired behavior?

• TDD - testing business rules/validation in ASP.NET MVC

  Hi, I am using the sharp architecture so I can easily use mocks etc. in my unit tests and/or during TDD. I have quite complicated business rules and would like to test them at the controller level. I am just wondering how other people do this? For me validation tests business rules at three levels: (1) Property level (e.g. property is required) (2) Intra property level (e.g. start date < end date) (3) Persistence level (e.g. name is unique, parent cannot be child of child) My validation framework also assigns errors to properties. I am just wondering what other people do? Do you write a test for each business rule and check whether the correct error message is assigned to the correct property (i.e. looking at the ASP.MVC ModelState)? I hope my question makes sense. • Import Excel 2007 into SQL 2000 using Classic ASP and ADO

  I have the following code from a legacy app which currently reads from an excel 2003 spreadsheet on a server, but I need this to run from my machine which uses excel 2007. When I debug on my machine ADO does not seem to be reading the spreadsheet. I have checked all file paths etc. and location of spreadsheet that is all fine. I've heard that you cannot use the jet db engine for excel 2007 anymore? Can someone confirm this? What do I need to do to get this to work? • Administrator's shortcut to batch file with double quoted parameters

  Take an excruciatingly simple batch file: echo hi pause Save that as test.bat. Now, make a shortcut to test.bat. The shortcut runs the batch file, which prints "hi" and then waits for a keypress as expected. Now, add some argument to the target of the shortcut. Now you have a shortcut to: %path%\test.bat some args The shortcut runs the batch file as before. Now, run the shortcut as administrator. (This is on Windows 7 by the way.) You can use either right-click - Run as Administrator, or go to the shortcut's properties and check the box in the advanced section. Tell UAC that it's okay and once again the shortcut runs the batch file as expected. Now, change the arguments in the target of the shortcut to add double quotes: %path%\test.bat "some args" Now try the shortcut as administrator. It doesn't work this time! A command window pops up and and disappears too fast to see any error. I tried adding test.log 2&1 to the shortcut, but no log is created in this case. Try running the same shortcut (with the double quotes) but not as Administrator. It runs the batch file fine. So, it seems the behavior is not because of the double quoted parameters, and it's not because it's run as Administrator. It's some weird combination of the two. I also tried running the same command from an administrator's command window. This ran the batch file as expected without error. Running the shortcut from the command window spawned a new command window which flashed and went away. So apparently the issue is caused by a combination of administrator, the shortcut, and the double quotes. I'm totally stumped, does anyone have any idea what's going on?

• Data Binding to an object in C#

  Objective-c/cocoa offers a form of binding where a control's properties (ie text in a textbox) can be bound to the property of an object. I am trying to duplicate this functionality in C# w/ .Net 3.5. I have created the following very simple class in the file MyClass.cs: class MyClass { private string myName; public string MyName { get { return myName; } set { myName = value; } } public MyClass() { myName = "Allen"; } } I also created a simple form with 1 textbox and 1 button. I init'd one instance of Myclass inside the form code and built the project. Using the DataSource Wizard in Vs2008, i selected to create a data source based on object, and selected the MyClass assembly. This created a datasource entity. I changed the databinding of the textbox to this datasource; however, the expected result (that the textbox's contents would be "allen") was not achieved. Further, putting text into the textbox is not updating the name property of the object. I know i'm missing something fundamental here. At some point i should have to tie my instance of the MyClass class that i initialized inside the form code to the textbox, but that hasn't occurred. Everything i've looked at online seems to gloss over using DataBinding with an object (or i'm missing the mark entirely), so any help is great appreciated. ----Edit--- Utilizing what i learned by the answers, i looked at the code generated by Visual Studio, it had the following: this.myClassBindingSource.DataSource = typeof(BindingTest.MyClass); if i comment that out and substitute : this.myClassBindingSource.DataSource = new MyClass(); i get the expected behavior. Why is the default code generated by VS like it is? Assuming this is more correct than the method that works, how should i modify my code to work within the bounds of what VS generated?

• How to publish an ASP.NET MVC website

  Hello -- I've a site that I'd like to publish to a co-located live server. I'm finding this simple task quite hard. My problems begin with the Web Deploy tool (1.1) giving me a 401 Unauthorized as the adminstrator because port :8172 comes up in the errors and this port is blocked - but the documentation says "The default ListenURL is http://+:80/MsDeployAgentService"! I'm loathe to open another port and I've little patience these days so I thought bu66er it, I'll create a Web Deploy package and import it into IIS on the server over RDP. I notice first that Visual Studio doesn't use a dialog box to gather settings, or use my Publish profiles but seems to use a tab in the project properties, although I think these are ignored when importing the package anyway? I'm now sitting in the import wizard with Application Path and Connection String. I've cleared the conn string as I think this is for some ASP stuff I don't use but when I enter nothing in the Application Path, the wizard barks at me saying that basically I'm a weirdo because most people publish to folders beneath the root site. Now, I want my site to be site.com/Home/About and not site.com/subfolder/Home/About and I think being an MVC routed site that a subfolder will introduce other headaches. Should I go ahead and use the root? Finally, I also want to publish a web service to www.site.com/services/soap which I think IIS can handle. While typing this question, Amazon have delivered my IIS 7 Resource Kit, and I've been scouring the internet but actually I'm getting more confused. • Wix create non advertised shortcut for all users / per machine

  In WIX, how do you create a non advertised shortcut in the allusers profile? So far I've only been able to accomplish this with advertised shortcuts. I prefer advertised shortcuts because you can go to the shortcut's properties and use "find target". In the tutorials I've seen use a registry value for the keypath of a shortcut. The problem is they use HKCU as the root. When HKCU is used, and another user uninstalls the program (since it's installed for all users) the registry key is left behind. When I use HKMU as the root I get an ICE57 error, but the key is removed when another user uninstalls the program. I seem to be pushed towards using HKCU though HKMU seems to behave correctly (per-user vs all-users). When I try to create the non advertised shortcut I get various ICE error such as ICE38, ICE43, or ICE 57. Most articles I've seen recommend "just ignore the ice errors". There must be a way to create the non advertised shortcuts, without creating ICE errors. Please post sample code for a working example.

  Am I understanding it wrong, or is the description wrong? Equals checks for noncompatible operand (EQ_CHECK_FOR_OPERAND_NOT_COMPATIBLE_WITH_THIS) This equals method is checking to see if the argument is some incompatible type (i.e., a class that is neither a supertype nor subtype of the class that defines the equals method). For example, the Foo class might have an equals method that looks like: public boolean equals(Object o) { if (o instanceof Foo) return name.equals(((Foo)o).name); else if (o instanceof String) return name.equals(o); else return false; This is considered bad practice, as it makes it very hard to implement an equals method that is symmetric and transitive. Without those properties, very unexpected behavoirs are possible.   Data Layer I have an Order class as an entity. This Order entity is my model object. Order can be different types, let it be A B C D Also Order class may have common properties like Name, Time of creation, etc. Also based on the order type there are different fields that are not common. View Layer The view contains the following Main Menu ListView The Main Menu contains the drop down menu button which is used to create the order based on the type selected from the drop down. The drop down contains the Order types ( A ,B , C and D). There are different user control based on the order type. Like for example if user chooses to create an order of type A then different view with different inputs field is popped up. Hence, there are four user control for each order type. If user selects A option from the drop down then Order of type A is created and vica versa. Now below is the List View that contains the List of orders so far created by the user. To Edit any particular order user may double click the list view row. Based on the order type clicked by the user in the listview, the view of that order type opens in edit mode. For example if user selects an order type A from the list view then view for order type A open in edit mode. Please suggest me interaction model for view model's in the scenario discussed above. • Gallio MbUnit and Team City problem

  I asked a question this morning about an integration problem between Gallio and Team City. I changed the msbuild file to use the proper syntax with the latest Gallio build script API. • Enum Naming Convention - Plural

  I'm asking this question despite having read similar but not exactly what I want at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/495051/c-naming-convention-for-enum-and-matching-property I found I have a tendency to name enums in plural and then 'use' them as singular, example: public enum EntityTypes { Type1, Type2 } public class SomeClass { /* some codes */ public EntityTypes EntityType {get; set;} } Of course it works and this is my style, but can anyone find potential problem with such convention? I do have an "ugly" naming with the word "Status" though: public enum OrderStatuses { Pending, Fulfilled, Error, Blah, Blah } public class SomeClass { /* some codes */ public OrderStatuses OrderStatus {get; set;} } Additional Info: Maybe my question wasn't clear enough. I often have to think hard when naming the variables of the my defined enum types. I know the best practice, but it doesn't help to ease my job of naming those variables. I can't possibly expose all my enum properties (say "Status") as "MyStatus". My question: Can anyone find potential problem with my convention described above? It is NOT about best practice. Question rephrase: Well, I guess I should ask the question this way: Can someone come out a good generic way of naming the enum type such that when used, the naming of the enum 'instance' will be pretty straightforward?

• How to produce an HTTP 403-equivalent WCF Message from an IErrorHandler?

  I want to write an IErrorHandler implementation that will handle AuthenticationException instances (a proprietary type), and then in the implementation of ProvideFault provide a traditional Http Response with a status code of 403 as the fault message. So far I have my first best guess wired into a service, but WCF appears to be ignoring the output message completely, even though the error handler is being called. See server logs for more details.' - which is what would happen if there was no IErrorHandler. Is this a feature of the behaviours added by WebServiceHost? Or is it because the message I'm building is simply wrong!? I can verify that the event log is indeed not receiving anything. My current test environment is a WebGet method (both XML and Json) hosted in a service that is created with the WebServiceHostFactory, and Asp.Net compatibility switched off. The service method simply throws the exception in question.

• Reading a WAV file into VST.Net to process with a plugin

  Hello, I'm trying to use the VST.Net and NAudio frameworks to build an application that processes audio using a VST plugin. Ideally, the application should load a wav or mp3 file, process it with the VST, and then write a new file. I have done some poking around with the VST.Net library and was able to compile and run the samples (specifically the VST Host one). What I have not figured out is how to load an audio file into the program and have it write a new file back out. I'd like to be able to configure the properties for the VST plugin via C#, and be able to process the audio with 2 or more consecutive VSTs. Using NAudio, I was able to create this simple script to copy an audio file. • Complex data types in WCF?

  I've run into a problem trying to return an object that holds a collection of childobjects that again can hold a collection of grandchild objects. I get an error, 'connection forcibly closed by host'. Is there any way to make this work? I currently have a structure resembling this: pseudo code: Person: IEnumerable<Order> Order: IEnumberable<OrderLine> All three objects have the DataContract attribute and all public properties i want exposed (including the IEnumerable's) have the DataMember attribute. I have multiple OperationContract's on my service and all the methods returning a single object OR an IEnumerable of an object works perfectly. It's only when i try to nest IEnumerable that it turns bad. Also in my client service reference i picked the generic list as my collection type. I just want to emphasize, only one of my operations/methods fail with this error - the rest of them work perfectly. EDIT (more detailed error description): [SocketException (0x2746): An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host] [IOException: Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.] [WebException: The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive.] [CommunicationException: An error occurred while receiving the HTTP response to http://myservice.mydomain.dk/MyService.svc. This could be due to the service endpoint binding not using the HTTP protocol. This could also be due to an HTTP request context being aborted by the server (possibly due to the service shutting down). See server logs for more details.] I tried looking for logs but i can't find any... also i'm using a WSHttpBinding and an http endpoint.

• DDD: Aggregate Roots

  Hello, I need help with finding my aggregate root and boundary. I have 3 Entities: Plan, PlannedRole and PlannedTraining. Each Plan can include many PlannedRoles and PlannedTrainings. Solution 1: At first I thought Plan is the aggregate root because PlannedRole and PlannedTraining do not make sense out of the context of a Plan. They are always within a plan. Also, we have a business rule that says each Plan can have a maximum of 3 PlannedRoles and 5 PlannedTrainings. So I thought by nominating the Plan as the aggregate root, I can enforce this invariant. However, we have a Search page where the user searches for Plans. The results shows a few properties of the Plan itself (and none of its PlannedRoles or PlannedTrainings). I thought if I have to load the entire aggregate, it would have a lot of overhead. There are nearly 3000 plans and each may have a few children. Loading all these objects together and then ignoring PlannedRoles and PlannedTrainings in the search page doesn't make sense to me. Solution 2: I just realized the user wants 2 more search pages where they can search for Planned Roles or Planned Trainings. That made me realize they are trying to access these objects independently and "out of" the context of Plan. So I thought I was wrong about my initial design and that is how I came up with this solution. So, I thought to have 3 aggregates here, 1 for each Entity. This approach enables me to search for each Entity independently and also resolves the performance issue in solution 1. However, using this approach I cannot enforce the invariant I mentioned earlier. There is also another invariant that states a Plan can be changed only if it is of a certain status. So, I shouldn't be able to add any PlannedRoles or PlannedTrainings to a Plan that is not in that status. Again, I can't enforce this invariant with the second approach. • Cannot get net 4.5rc to work

  I have installed .net 4.5rc from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/hh854779.aspx because I would like to use the new spatial features when developing with visual visual web developer 2010 express. But when I want to change the target framework to .net 4.5 in the project properties it is not there. I have checked the directory in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64 and can see that there is no v4.5 folder but the v4.0 directory has been updated with a timestamp corresponding to when I installed v4.5. The version of the v4.0 directory is v4.0.30319. I am running windows 7 on my computer. Any ideas why I cannot find v4.5 ? thanks Thomas *UPDATE Based on the comment below I have found out that I am running 4.5. For others reading this post, .net 4.5 replaces the files in the .net 4.0 directory but without renaming the directory to .net 4.5 (a bit confusing). To check whether your assemblies have been updated check the product version of eg. system.dll (right click - details). According to this post http://www.west-wind.com/weblog/posts/2012/Mar/13/NET-45-is-an-inplace-replacement-for-NET-40 if the product version is above 17000 it is running 4.5.

• Model Binding, a simple, simple question

  I have a struct which works much like the System.Nullable type: public struct SpecialProperty<T> { public static implicit operator T(SpecialProperty<T> value) { return value.Value; } public static implicit operator SpecialProperty<T>(T value) { return new TrackChanges<T> { Value = value }; } T internalValue; public T Value { get { return internalValue; } set { internalValue = value; } } public override bool Equals(object other) { return Value.Equals(other); } public override int GetHashCode() { return Value.GetHashCode(); } public override string ToString() { return Value.ToString(); } } I'm trying to use it with ASP.NET MVC binding. Using the default customer model binder the property will always yield null. I can fix this by adding ".Value" to the end of every form input name, but I just want it to bind to the new type directly using some sort of custom model binder, but all the solutions I've tried seemed needlessly complex. I feel like I should be able to extend the default binder and with a few lines of code redirect the property binding to the entire model using implicit conversion. I don't quite get the binding paradigm of the default binder, but it seems really stuck on this distinction between the model and model properties. What is the simplest method to do this? Thanks!

• Unable to run Ajax Minifier as post-build in Visual Studio.

  I've set up my post build config as demonstrated at http://www.asp.net/ajaxlibrary/ajaxminquickstart.ashx I'm getting the following error though: The "JsSourceFiles" parameter is not supported by the "AjaxMin" task. Verify the parameter exists on the task, and it is a settable public instance property. There is an array of ITaskItem called SourceFiles though so I edited my configuration to match. <Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath)\Microsoft\MicrosoftAjax\ajaxmin.tasks" /> <Target Name="AfterBuild"> <ItemGroup> <JS Include="**\*.js" Exclude="**\*.min.js" /> </ItemGroup> <ItemGroup> <CSS Include="**\*.css" Exclude="**\*.min.css" /> </ItemGroup> <AjaxMin SourceFiles="@(JS);@(CSS)" SourceExtensionPattern="\.js$;\.css$" TargetExtension=".min.js;.min.css"/> </Target> I now get the error: The "SourceFiles" parameter is not supported by the "AjaxMin" task. Verify the parameter exists on the task, and it is a settable public instance property. I'm scratching my head now. Surely it should be easier than this? I'm running Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate on a Windows 7 64 bit installation.

• AS3 Working With Arbitrarily Large Files

  I am trying to read a very large file in AS3 and am having problems with the runtime just crashing on me. I'm currently using a FileStream to open the file asynchronously. This does not work(crashes without an Exception) for files bigger than about 300MB. _fileStream = new FileStream(); _fileStream.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, loadError); _fileStream.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, loadComplete); _fileStream.openAsync(myFile, FileMode.READ); In looking at the documentation, it sounds like the FileStream class still tries to read in the entire file to memory(which is bad for large files). Is there a more suitable class to use for reading large files? I really would like something like a buffered FileStream class that only loads the bytes from the files that are going to be read next. I'm expecting that I may need to write a class that does this for me, but then I would need to read only a piece of a file at a time. I'm assuming that I can do this by setting the position and readAhead properties of the FileStream to read a chunk out of a file at a time. I would love to save some time if there is a class like this that already exists. Is there a good way to process large files in AS3, without loading entire contents into memory?

• Referencing .NET Assembly in VB6 won't work

  I wrote a .net assembly using c# to perform functions that will be used by both managed and unmanaged code. I have a VB6 project that now needs to use the assembly via COM. I created my .net assembly, made sure that ComVisible is set to true and that it is registered for COM interop via project properties. public class MyClass [ComVisible(true)] public string GetResponse() { return "Testing Response" } } I build the assembly and copied the file into a folder. TestInterop.dll I then run a batch file to register the assembly tool to register the object for COM. cd C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\ regasm "c:\Program Files\TestApp\TestInterop.dll" /tlb:TestInterop.tlb I open a new VB6 application and reference TestInterop.dll In VB6 I write the following code and it compiles. Dim obj as TestInterop.MyClass Set obj = new TestInterop.MyClass Dim strTest as string strTest = obj.GetRespose() When I run the program it errors on the obj.GetResponse() line. Run-time error' -2147024894 (80070002'): Automation error The system cannot find the file specified Also, the intellesense does not work on obj. I had to type the GetResponse method. Is this normal? Does anyone have any clue what could be wrong or what steps I missed. Thanks!

• Most efficient way of creating tree from adjacency list

  I have an adjacency list of objects (rows loaded from SQL database with the key and it's parent key) that I need to use to build an unordered tree. It's guaranteed to not have cycles. This is taking wayyy too long (processed only ~3K out of 870K nodes in about 5 minutes). Running on my workstation Core 2 Duo with plenty of RAM. • A Question about .net Rfc2898DeriveBytes class?

  What is the difference in this class? as posed to just using Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(string object); I have had relative success with either approach, the former is a more long winded approach where as the latter is simple and to the point. Both seem to allow you to do the same thing eventually but I am struggling to the see the point in using the former over the latter. The basic concept I have been able to grasp is that you can convert string passwords into byte arrays to be used for e.g a symmetric encryption class, AesManaged. Via the RFC class but you get to use SaltValues and password when creating your rfc object. I assume its more secure but still thats an uneducated guess at best ! Also that it allows you to return byte arrays of a certain size, well something like that. heres a few examples to show you where I am coming from? byte[] myPassinBytes = Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes("some password"); or string password = "P@%5w0r]>"; byte[] saltArray = Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes("this is my salt"); Rfc2898DeriveBytes rfcKey = new Rfc2898DeriveBytes(password, saltArray); The 'rfcKey' object can now be used towards setting up the the .Key or .IV properties on a Symmetric Encryption Algorithm class. ie. RijndaelManaged rj = new RijndaelManaged (); rj.Key = rfcKey.Getbytes(rj.KeySize / 8); rj.IV = rfcKey.Getbytes(rj.Blocksize / 8); 'rj' should be ready to go ! The confusing part ... so rather than using the 'rfcKey' object can I not just use my 'myPassInBytes' array to help set-up my 'rj' object???? I have tried doing this in VS2008 and the immediate answer is NO ! but have you guys got a better educated answer as to why the RFC class is used over the other alternative I have mentioned above and why????
