  I've got a pathfinding boss enemy that seeks the player using the A* algorithm. It's a pretty complex environment, and I'm doing it in Flash, so the search can get a bit slow when it's searching over long distances. If the player was stationary, I could just search once, but at the moment I'm searching every frame. This takes long enough that my framerate is suffering. What's the usual solution to this? Is there a way to "replan" A* without redoing the entire search? Should I just search a little less often (every half-second or second) and accept that there will be a little inaccuracy in the path?

• Mess up between mysql server and phpmyadmin

  0 down vote favorite After I installed XAMP on my ubuntu 12.10 it was working fine with mysql. I could start mysql- sudo mysql -uroot -p. I connet it using 127.0.0.1:3306 Recently I installed phpmyadmin. When I start it it shows access denied. I got solution from web: sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 stop sudo /etc/init.d/mysql stop sudo /etc/init.d/proftpd stop sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start Now I start phpmyadmin it starts but now I could not connect with mysql on terminal. Additionally phpmyadmin database does not shows all existing databse on mysql. CAn anyone tell me what's going on here? I am using ubuntu 12.10

  I installed ubuntu 13.10 in asus k45vd laptop. sometimes when I'm working with my laptop I see dashes all over my screen(showing them takes maybe less than one secconds so it's difficult to take screenshot.) This problem just is in unity in other desktops which I installed like xfce4, kde, gnome-shell there isn't this problem. in ubuntu 13.04 there was this problem in my laptop too, and I tested ubuntu in another laptop asus k55vd there is this problem in that laptop too. I thought this a unity bug in asus kxxvd series! is there any solution for this problem?

Here's what I can do: First choice: create classical web version with all products in that page - http://www.myweb.com. create mobile web version with all products in the page and use jQuery Mobile to format all nicely but this may be long to (load + format), and may provide bad user experience - http://m.myweb.com. Second choice: create classical web version with all products in that page create mobile web version with almost nothing but a Web page showing wait, then download all products in the page using AJAX and use jQuery Mobile to format all nicely. Showing a wait, loading message gives far more time to do whatever I want and may provide better user experience - http://m.myweb.com. Question: if I choose the second solution, Google won't read anything on the mobile version (because all products will be downloaded in the page using AJAX), so it wont be properly read by crawlers. What / how shall I do?

• MSSQL: Copying data from one database to another

  I have database that has data imported from another server using import and export wizard of SQL Server Management Studio. There is also empty database with same tables but it also has primary keys, foreign keys and indexes. How to get data from first database to another? Here is the description of my crusade. And believe me – it is not nice one. Bugs in import and export wizard There is some awful bugs in import and export wizard that makes data imports and exports possible only on very limited manner: wizard is not able to analyze foreign keys, wizard wants to create tables always, whatever you say in settings. The result is faulty and useless package. Now let’s go step by step and make things work in our scenario. Database There are two databases. Let’s name them like this: PLAIN – contains data imported from remote server (no indexes, no keys, no nothing, just plain dumb data) CORRECT – empty database with same structure as remote database (indexes, keys and everything else but no data) Our goal is to get data from PLAIN to CORRECT. 1. Create import and export package In this point we will create faulty SSIS package using SQL Server Management Studio. Run import and export wizard and let it create SSIS package that reads data from CORRECT and writes it to, let’s say, CORRECT-2. Make sure you enable identity insert. Make sure there are no views selected. Make sure you don’t let package to create tables (you can miss this step because it wants to create tables anyway). Save package to SSIS. 2. Modify import and export package Now let’s clean up the package and remove all faulty crap. Connect SQL Server Management Studio to SSIS instance. Select the package you just saved and export it to your hard disc. Run Business Intelligence Studio. Create new SSIS project (DON’T MISS THIS STEP). Add package from disc as existing item to project and open it. Move to Control Flow page do one of following: Remove all preparation SQL-tasks and connect Data Flow tasks. Modify all preparation SQL-tasks so the existence of tables is checked before table is created (yes, you have to do it manually). Add new Execute-SQL task as first task in control flow: Open task properties. Assign destination connection as connection to use. Insert the following SQL as command:   EXEC sp_MSForEachTable 'ALTER TABLE ? NOCHECK CONSTRAINT ALL' GO   EXEC sp_MSForEachTable 'DELETE FROM ?' GO   Save task. Add new Execute-SQL task as last task in control flow: Open task properties. Assign destination connection as connection to use. Insert the following SQL as command:   EXEC sp_MSForEachTable 'ALTER TABLE ? CHECK CONSTRAINT ALL' GO   Save task Now connect first Execute-SQL task with first Data Flow task and last Data Flow task with second Execute-SQL task. Now move to Package Explorer tab and change connections under Connection Managers folder. Make source connection to use database PLAIN. Make destination connection to use database CORRECT. Save package and rebuilt the project. Update package using SQL Server Management Studio. Some hints: Make sure you take the package from solution folder because it is saved there now. Don’t overwrite existing package. Use numeric suffix and let Management Studio to create a new version of package. Now you are done with your package. Run it to test it and clean out all the errors you find. TRUNCATE vs DELETE You can see that I used DELETE FROM instead of TRUNCATE. Why? Because TRUNCATE has some nasty limits (taken from MSDN): “You cannot use TRUNCATE TABLE on a table referenced by a FOREIGN KEY constraint; instead, use DELETE statement without a WHERE clause. Because TRUNCATE TABLE is not logged, it cannot activate a trigger. TRUNCATE TABLE may not be used on tables participating in an indexed view.” As I am not sure what tables you have and how they are used I provided here the solution that should work for all scenarios. If you need better performance then in some cases you can use TRUNCATE table instead of DELETE. Conclusion My conclusion is bitter this time although I am very positive guy. It is A.D. 2010 and still we have to write stupid hacks for simple things. Simple tools that existed before are long gone and we have to live mysterious bloatware that is our only choice when using default tools. If you take a look at the length of this posting and the count of steps I had to do for one easy thing you should treat it as a signal that something has went wrong in last years. Although I got my job done I would be still more happy if out of box tools are more intelligent one day. • Why do I have to have CapsLock permanently ON

  Initially, I believed this was on OpenOffice problem but Abiword and, indeed, Gedit, display the same problem, so it must be an Ubuntu glitch. I was typing a document and used CapsLock when creating a title. Now, when I turn CapsLock off, everything is in caps - when I turn it on, everything is in lower case. I can cope with this if I leave CapsLock on permanently but this is not what is supposed to happen. CapsLock OFF = NO CAPS (or should do!). Can anybody help with this? I've searched around this forum but, not being much of a forum user, I was unable to find a solution. It's entirely possible that I had a 'finger-fit' and hit a combo of buttons which included CapsLock but I don't remember doing that. I'm running Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 on an HP Intel PC. • Run virtualbox in other X session

  I'm running ubuntu on my laptop (host). Inside ubuntu, there is running one instance of virtualbox. (where is installed MS Windows). My idea is to run virtualbox in separate X session (something like multiuser). If it is not clear, i'll try to explain... When I want to visit tty1, I'll press CTRL+ALT+F1. To return to my Unity desktop, I'm gona use CTRL+ALT+F7... And here comes what I need. After pressing CTRL+ALT+F8 show fullscreen virtualbox windows system, just to switch as ttys.. I am using Ubuntu 14.10. I have wasted hours by using google to find some solution, but my biggest prolem is I cannot name the problem.

• Physics engine that can handle multiple attractors?

  I'm putting together a game that will be played mostly with three dimensional gravity. By that I mean multiple planets/stars/moons behaving realistically, and path plotting and path prediction in the gravity field. I have looked at a variety of physics engines, such as Bullet, tokamak or Newton, but none of them seem to be suitable, as I'd essentially have to re-write the gravity engine in their framework. Do you know of a physics engine that is capable of dealing with multiple bodies all attracted to one another? I don't need scenegraph management, or rendering, just core physics. (collision detection would be a bonus, as would rigid body dynamics). My background is in physics, so I would be able to write an engine that uses Verlet integration or RK4 (or even Euler integration, if I had to) but I'd much rather adapt an off the shelf solution. • ASP.NET AJAX and my axe!

  So, I'm seriously considering axing ASP.NET AJAX from my future projects as I honestly feel it's too bloated, and at times convoluted. I'm also starting to feel it is a dying library in the .NET framework as I hardly see any quality components from the open-source community. All the kick-ass components are usually equally bloated commercial components... It was cool at first, but now I tend to get annoyed with it more than anything else. I'm planning on switching over to the jQuery library as just about everything in ASP.NET AJAX is often easily achievable with jQuery, and, more often than not, more graceful of a solution that ASP.NET AJAX and it has a much stronger open-source community. Perhaps, it's just me, but do you feel the same way about ASP.NET AJAX? How was/is your experience working with ASP.NET AJAX?

• C or assembly code to find current cpu core speed

  How can my application efficiently determine the following information peroidically while it executes: 1: current speed of each of the 8 CPU cores. 2: which core the code is currently executing on. My application is C and assembly-language, so any solution in either C or assembly-language is fine. This code needs to execute quickly, so creating, reading and processing a file generated by "cat /proc/cpuinfo" is much too slow. The cores slow-down and speed-up automatically, probably to keep CPU temperature under control. Therefore, a one-time measure is not sufficient for my purposes. My application already reads and subtracts the cpu cycle counter in assembly language to determine number of clock cycles, but my program cannot compute elapsed time in nanoseconds unless it knows the current clock frequency of the cpu cores (and which core the code is executing on).   Hi guys, I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04. My CPU usage is high when I do trivial things such as scrolling through a PDF file. So I think my video driver is not properly installed. I want to confirm that by checking the information of my currently installed video driver, such as if there's a driver installed and what version it is. Then I could decide whether to install a new one if it is not up to date. On Windows, I could use the device manager, how to do that on Ubuntu Linux? I don't expect a GUI solution for this. • Can I use MSBuild to build old VS6 C++ projects?

  I have a build computer where Visual Studio not installed, only MSbuild which can build VS2008 projcets without having any Visual Studio installed. I wonder whether it is possible to use MSbuild with VC++ 6.0 project files, although I am thinking this could not be possible. In the past I have used it with a VS2008 solution file for C++, but not for building C++ 6.0 dsw file. For Vb6 we have an extension package for Msbuild (MSBuild.ExtensionPack.VisualStudio.VB6). Is anything similar available for C++ 6.0 projects? An alternative could be if there are lightweight build tools that can built VC6++ .dsw files without having to install Visual Studio 6.0 ?

It to slow event if you move mouse then its feel like i'll take 1min to move one place 2 another.. I know why this is happening, all because of 12.04 runs my CPU up to 99%-100% all over time. • Eee PC brighness contol with 12.04 release

  is there a solution to the low screen brightness issue with the Eee PC and release 12.04? When I use the brightness control, the screen goes through three adjustment cycles of dark to semi bright, but never gets to bright. As you index the control up, brightness increases, then suddenly cuts back to dark. use the brightness button to further increase the brightness and the same cycle happens. As though there are three distinct brightness events, each one setting back to low level. Under no circumstances other than initial boot up can you get to a bright screen. I just finished installing 12.04 on two Acer (Gateway netbooks) with no brightness issue. Just on the Eee PC

  I have Virtualbox 4.1.2_ubuntur3859 installed on an Ubuntu 11.10 host, running a guest ubuntu server 10.04 with xfce4 and xorg installed with no-install-recommends. I have installed guest additions, but the maximum resolution in the display settings is 800x600. I have read related questions: How to change resolution of the VirtualBox (Ubuntu guest and host)? Higher screen resolution in VirtualBox? upgrading VirtualBox 3.2.10 breaks my guest Ubuntu screen resolution Ubuntu as guest OS (with Vista host) stuck at 800x600 resolution but none contain the solution to my issue. Am I missing any particular packages that would allow me to change resolution? I would like to keep the machine as small as possible.

• Removing a File Association

  I found a rather simple way to remove a file association (default program) tonight that I thought others might find useful.  I found it after discovering that Windows 7 doesn't provide a straight-forward way of removing an association.Windows 7 provides a nice interface in the Control Panel for changing associations (Programs > Default Programs > Set Associations), but once you have one you cannot get rid of it.  The Registry is an obvious choice, because that's where the associations are stored.  In fact, the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hive has the association, but there is also a key you need to delete somewhere in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive.Doing a little poking around, I discovered a command line program called ASSOC that'll do it.  And typing HELP ASSOC confirms that it was what I was looking for.  The solution to my problem turned out to be as simple as typing ASSOC .BIN="" on the command line.
