  • How can I compute the Big-O notation for a given piece of code?

    So I just took a data structure midterm today and I was asked to determine the run time, in Big O notation, of the following nested loop: for (int i = 0; i < n-1; i++) { for(int j = 0; j < i; j++2) { //1 Statement } } I'm having trouble understanding the formula behind determining the run time. I thought that since the inner loop has 1 statement, and using the series equation of: (n * (n - 1)) / 2, I figured it to be: 1n * (n-1) / 2. Thus equaling (n^2 - 1) / 2. And so I generalized the runtime to be O(n^2 / 2). I'm not sure this is right though haha, was I supposed to divide my answer again by 2 since j is being upped in intervals of 2? Or is my answer completely off?

  • Should I fork for a major re-write that uses a small amount of the original code?

    I'm writing a library. It's a completely rewritten version of another one, to suit my needs (PCL compatibility, mainly). However, the API will be completely rewritten, as I'll need to change a lot of stuff around for PCL compliance. Also, as it is a rewrite, I won't be able to just start from the library and just change it bit by bit, as I typically see with forks. I tried that, but it just didn't work. So what should I do? Should I fork here or should I make a new library?

    Currently, in my game - I'm not using XNA's SpriteBatch to render anything(I am using Farseer Physic's Debug View), and I was wondering how I would render something like this: only using XNA. My second question is once I have drawn these stenciled sprites , how would I give the "stenciled" lines a glow effect like so: I haven't done anything like this before so It is a very confusing experience for me.     I was recently browsing a open source JavaScript project. The project is a straight port from another project in C language. It mostly use static methods, packed together in classes. Most classes are implemented using this pattern : Foo = (function () { var privateField = "bar"; var publicField = "bar";     function publicMethod() { console.log('this is public');     } function privateMethod() { console.log('this is private'); } return {   publicMethod : publicMethod, publicField : publicField }; })(); This was the first time I saw private methods implemented that way. I perfectly understand how it works, using a anonymous method. Here is my question : is this pattern a good practice ? What are the actual limitations or caveats ?   • In what ways can I test an image slideshow javascript code?

    I have a slideshow of images (and links) on a page. These images are part of a JSON response to a request sent after the page loads. The slideshow is set to play at an interval of 2 seconds. The slideshow can be paused, played over, and all other controls a normal slideshow would have. As a Rails dev, I proposed cucumber but the javascript guys in the team are not comfortable with ruby. I saw some cucumber for javascript libraries coming up, still in experimental stage. I checked out jasmine and related tutorials but all I could get from them is how I can carry out any internal functional testing such as credit-cart validation, etc. - which I think could actually be handled in unit testing? (Screw the research I did and) How should I go about testing this and similar components?

    Running the "service service_name status" command gives three different types of output when three different service_names are used. I tried with atftpd, apache2, and isc-dhcp-server, as shown below. user@host:~$ service atftpd status Usage: /etc/init.d/atftpd {start|stop|restart|reload|force-reload} user@host:~$ service apache2 status Apache2 is running (pid 1103). user@host:~$ service isc-dhcp-server status isc-dhcp-server start/running, process 5696 Could this be because atftpd has not been converted to Upstart? The status for isc-dhcp-server shows "start/running" which indicates it has been converted to use Upstart. I would've thought apache2 would have been converted to Upstart already. If it has then why does it not display "start/running"?
