  • Kile missing "Settings" dialog after update to kubuntu 12.10

    After update to Kubuntu 12.10, I can no longer access configuration options in Kile from Settings-Configure kile (or whatever the menu entry was for configuration). In fact, "Settings" menu has only five entries: "Define current document as master document", "System check", "Show side bar", "Show message bar", and "Toolbars shown." I did a fresh install of Kubuntu 12.10 on one of my other computers, and same problem. I even tried adding the (unsupported) ppa:kile/stable, but the problem persists. Any ideas? I need to access settings to set PDF Latex to use "modern" compilation mode, so that I can use synctex.

  • Building (simple) stellar systems

    hi I'm currently looking at how to simulate easily some stellar systems (meaning some central stars and then some planets with maybe satellites), in order to allow later some space based strategy game (hence with space ships moving around). This should all be based around time (so the state of each system differs through time) I'm quite struggling with the math behind this topic, like for example: - ellipse related math, - creating the path from planet A to B having time in mind (respective positions will change over time)... Do you know of any resources for that ? I wouldn't mind even buying books about it... thanks in advance best space borg side note: how to display all this stuff isn't a matter at this point in time, I'll simple plans for that (basically sticking to 2D and a "high level view" with no space ships/planets details, just markers)

  • Why is JavaScript not used for classical application development (compiled software)?

    During my years of web development with JavaScript, I come to the conclusion that it's an incredible powerful language, and you can do amazing things with it. It offers a rich set of features, like: Dynamic typing First-class functions Nested functions Closures Functions as methods Functions as Object constructors Prototype-based Objects-based (almost everything is an object) Regex Array and Object literals It seems to me that almost everything can be achieved with this kind of language, you can also emulate OO programming, since it provides great freedom and many different coding styles. With more software-oriented custom functionalities (I/O, FileSystem, Input devices, etc.) I think it will be great to develop applications with. Though, as far as I know, it's only used in web development or in existing softwares as a scripting language only. Only recently, maybe thanks to the V8 Engine, it's been used more for other kind of tasks (see node.js for example). Why until now it's only be relegated only to web development? What is keeping it away from software development?

  • AGPL License - does it apply in this scenario?

    There is an AGPLv3 based software (Client) that makes web service calls (using SOAP) to another software (Server - commercial, cloud based). There is no common code or any connection whatsoever between these two except for the web service calls being made. My questions - Does the Server need to be AGPL too? I guess not - but would like to confirm. Let us say the end point URL for the Server can be configured on the Client side (by editing an XML file) to connect it to different Servers (again, there is no connection other than the webservice calls being made) does it require any of these Servers being AGPL? Are there any issues in running the Client as a DLL that is loaded by other commercial applications on users' desktops? Does it require these other applications also to be AGPL?

But many affiliate networks like Google AdSense or media.net require your website to have "high quality content". AdSense explicitly states: "Google ads, search boxes or search results may not be: * Integrated into a software application (does not apply to AdMob) of any kind, including toolbars. * Placed on any non-content-based page. (Does not apply to AdSense for search, mobile AdSense for search, or AdMob.)" Are there serious & trustworthy affiliate networks which allow ads to be published on a web application?

    Sorry my English... hope you understand me... I had a document. Edited it yesterday. But today, when i open it, it was desync. It show an one month earlier version!! I LOST A LOT OF WORK!! And i can't recover my right version of the document! I have a paid plan for Ubuntu One, but this made me very angry. And i don't see a way to recover and don't see a way to talk to somebody! There's no recovery mode like Dropbox... Man, i'm really ANGRY!! REALLY! I'll not recomend Ubuntu One services anymore! I don't know what to do... I lost my work and now i'm one month late! Thanks!!!

  • Documenting sp_ssiscatalog

    What is the best way to document an API? Moreover, what is the best way to document a T-SQL API? Before I try to answer those questions I should explain what I mean by “a T-SQL API”. I think of an API as being a collection of well-defined, known, code modules that provide some notion of a service to whomever uses it; in T-SQL terms I tend to think of a collection of stored procedures and functions as a form of API. Its a loose definition, I admit, and in SQL Server circles we don’t tend to think of stored procedures collectively as an API but if you think about it that’s exactly what they are. The question of how to document a T-SQL API came to my mind as I worked on sp_ssiscatalog. How could I make it easy for people to learn about the capabilities of sp_ssiscatalog without forcing them to dig through the code and find out for themselves? My opening gambit was to write documentation pages on the wiki at http://ssisreportingpack.codeplex.com. That’s kinda useful but it does suffer the disadvantage that someone using sp_ssiscatalog needs to go visit a webpage to read it – I want the documentation to be available wherever the user is using sp_ssiscatalog. Moreover, maintaining the wiki is a real PITA. Intellisense works up to a point, I guess: but that only shows whatever SQL Server knows about the various parameters, which isn’t all that much! I wanted a better way for my API users to learn about its capabilities and so I hit upon the idea of simply using PRINT statements within the code itself to inform the user what options are available; hence I added such PRINT statements in the latest check-in. Now when you execute (for example): EXEC sp_ssiscatalog @operation_type='execs' you can hit F6 a few times to view the messages pane and you shall see something like this: Notice that I’m returning information about all the parameters that can be used to affect the results that just got returned. I really do think this will be very useful to anyone using sp_ssiscatalog; I myself am always forgetting what the parameters are and I wrote the damn thing so I can’t really expect anyone else to remember them. I have not yet made available a release that has these changes in it but when I do I’ll blog about it right here. At the time of writing the latest available release of sp_ssiscatalog is DB v1.0.1.0 but if you want to the latest and greatest simply download it straight from source.   • AS3 Calculating Delta Time In Seconds

    Here is how I've been trying to implement delta time based on different internet resources. var startTime:Number = getTimer(); game.Update(deltaTime); deltaTime = Number(getTimer() - startTime) * 0.001; My issue with this is it doesn't seem to be giving me accurate timing. The main update shows the frame time at 0.001 and when reinitializing the level it goes to 0.002. I'm using dt else where for a timer and later on time based physics so I would like it to work as expected. I must be missing something silly.

    I was in a heated discussion the other day, about whether or not it's practical to have a perfect validation score on any HTML document. By practical I mean: Does not take a ridiculous amount of time compared to it's almost-perfect counterpart. Can be made to look good on older browsers and to be usable on very old browsers. Justifies the effort it may take to do so (does it come with some kind of reward on SEO/Usability/Accessibility that cannot be achieved in a simpler way with almost-perfect validation) So basically, is perfect validation score practical on any HTML document?

  • Where to prepare (legal) "embeded" documents for the web [on hold]

    Say I have to have terms of use on site, a place the text as marked up html. Where it is better to prepare this document initially if it is going to placed to the web? Considering that such documents are prepared and changed by lawyers, it is not very applicable for them to use text editor. And it is not very efficient to manually process content to prepare it for the web as it is changed. For now my solution is: Prepare document text in google docs keeping some simple structure (title, ordered lit of features, simple paragraphs), save as html (it will contain some unnecessary markup) and then use custom conversion tool (some script) to convert saved html from google docs to simple html and inject new version to the site. What is common practiceses for this problem? What is the workflow of preparing and publishing such documents.

  • Reasons to use C++ ?

    I've read here and in other places that learning C++, C or other low level languages are a must to get a more low level perspective on development. I agree with this, but I find it hard to find a reason to use C++ over C# or similar languages. Most of the work I do is web based, so there's no need for C++ there. Other work is windows based, and most things work fine in C# there, so what sort of situation could I use C++? I don't do any high performance stuff, nor do I create games, mostly business applications. I'm looking for an excuse to expand on my C++ knowledge but I need some motivation other than 'because the internet said I should'.

  • Adding JavaScript to your code dependent upon conditions

    You might be in an environment where you code is source controlled and where you might have build options to different environments.  I recently encountered this where the same code, built on different configurations, would have the website at a different URL.  If you are working with ASP.NET as I am you will have to do something a bit crazy but worth while.  If someone has a more efficient solution please share. Here is what I came up with to make sure the client side script was placed into the HEAD element for the Google Analytics script.  GA wants to be the last in the HEAD element so if you are doing others in the Page_Load then you should do theirs last. If you have larger function to declare, you can use a StringBuilder to separate the lines. This is the most compact I wished to go and manage readability.

  • Customizing Texmaker

    I use LaTeX a lot but I find quite obnoxious all the crappy files it leaves behind when you compile: .aux, .log... Fortunately TeXMaker has the option "clean" that deletes all of these. However, I don't like having to remember to click on it every time I'm going to close a document, ie I'd like a button that both closes a document and cleans all that stuff. Any hint as how to do it? I suppose if I knew how to access the program code I'd be able to do it as I'd just have to put together two options that already exist. Thanks
