  • CREDSSP 500 errors

    Hello all, We are experience a 500 http error when trying to run remote powershell on a win 2008 R2 server. I have run enable-wsmancredssp for both client and server roles on this machine. I have also run "winrm quickconfig". Also the allowfreshcredentials delegation group policy is setup correctly as well. There are active listeners running and credssp is enabled for client and service. I can connect with kerberos (by not specifing authentication type), but the following remote powershell command fails: Enter-PSSession -ComputerName serverX -credential domain\user -Authentication Credssp Error: Enter-PSSession : Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message : The WinRM client received an HTTP server error status (500), but the remote service did not include any other information about the cause of the failure. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic. At line:1 char:16 I have not been able to find any useful information on how to troubleshoot this. I have restarted Winrm, rebooted, disabled and re-enabled credssp. Please help.

  • Best ways to collect location-based user input

    I'm working on a website where users will be able to register and provide information about their location. In order to prevent users from inputting incorrect data, we don't want users to provide free-text information but instead choose from predefined values as much as possible. We believe there are 2 ways of providing those values: use an API to an external service provider or create your own local database. APIs Some resources: - https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/ads-api/get-autocomplete-data/ - http://developer.yahoo.com/geo/geoplanet/ Pros: -accuracy and completeness of data. -no maintenance related to update of data as this it taken care of by API provider. -easier/faster to get started (no need to create local database, just implement API). Cons: -degradation of performance when availability issues with external API. -outage due to changes to the external API (until your code is updated to reflect those changes). -lock-in with external provider. Local database Some resources: - http://developer.yahoo.com/geo/geoplanet/data/ - http://www.maxmind.com/app/geolitecity - http://download.geonames.org/export/dump/ Pros: -no external dependency: improved stability and performance. Cons: -more work to get started (you need to create the database and code to interact with it). -risks of inaccurate/incomplete data, either initially or over time. -more maintenance work to keep database up to date. Assuming the depth information requested from users is as follows: -country: interested in value. also used to narrow down list of regions. -region (state in the US, county in the UK...): not interested in value itself, only used to narrow down list of cities. -city: interested in value (which can be used to work out related region should we need regional statistics). -address: interested in value although OPTIONAL. The Oracle Transportation Management Special Interest Group (OTM SIG) hosted its 6th annual user conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, August 13-15, 2012. This independently run conference drew almost 400 attendees, predominantly Oracle Transportation Management (OTM) users. It featured four concurrent tracks that included both functionally and technically focused presentations. The tracks included a number of informative presentations by OTM users from various industries. These discussed the users' implementations, current usage, and future plans for OTM within their organizations. ARC Advisory Group found ConAgra's and Mutual Materials' presentations on OTM adoption and Kraft's presentation on the company's use of Fusion Transportation Intelligence particularly informative.   • EPM Architecture: Foundation

    This post is the first of a series that is going to describe the EPM System architecture per component. During the following weeks a couple of follow up posts will describe each component. If applicable, the component will have its standard port next to its name in brackets. EPM Foundation is Java based and consists of two web applications, Shared Services and Workspace. Both applications are accessed by browser through Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) or Internet Information Services (IIS). Communication to the backend database is done by JDBC. The file system to store Lifecycle Management (LCM) artifacts can be either local or remote (e.g. NFS, network share). For authentication purposes, the EPM Product Suite can connect to external directories or databases. Interaction with other EPM Suite components like product specific Lifecycle Management connectors or Reporting and Analysis Web happens through HTTP protocol.   • Will a polled event system cause lag for a server?

    I'm using a library called ENet. It is a reliable UDP library. If I'm hosting say 75 event driven card games and a lobby on the same thread as this code, will it cause any problems. If my understanding is correct, the process will simply sleep until there is an event, when there is one, it will process the event then come back here where potentially 5 or so events have queued up since so enet_host_services would return right away and not cause lag. I have been advised not to use multiple threads, will that be alright like this? Thanks

  • Agile Executives

    Over the years, I have experienced many different styles of software development. In the early days, most of the development was Waterfall development. In the last few years, I’ve become an advocate of Scrum. As I talked about last month, many people have misconceptions about what Scrum really is. The reason why we do Scrum at Veracity is because of the difference it makes in the life of the team doing Scrum. Software is for people, and happy motivated people will build better software. However, not all executives understand Scrum and how to get the information from development teams that use Scrum. I think that these executives need a support system for managing Agile teams. Historical Software Management When Henry Ford pioneered the assembly line, I doubt he realized the impact he’d have on Management through the ages. Historically, management was about managing the process of building things. The people were just cogs in that process. Like all cogs, they were replaceable. Unfortunately, most of the software industry followed this same style of management. Many of today’s senior managers learned how to manage companies before software was a significant influence on how the company did business. Software development is a very creative process, but too many managers have treated it like an assembly line. Idea’s go in, working software comes out, and we just have to figure out how to make sure that the ideas going in are perfect, then the software will be perfect. Lean Manufacturing In the manufacturing industry, Lean manufacturing has revolutionized Henry Ford’s assembly line. Derived from the Toyota process, Lean places emphasis on always providing value for the customer. Anything the customer wouldn’t be willing to pay for is wasteful. Agile is based on similar principles. We’re building software for people, and anything that isn’t useful to them doesn’t add value. Waterfall development would have teams build reams and reams of documentation about how the software should work. Agile development dispenses with this work because excessive documentation doesn’t add value. Instead, teams focus on building documentation only when it truly adds value to the customer. Many other Agile principals are similar. Playing Catch-up Just like in the manufacturing industry, many managers in the software industry have yet to understand the value of the principles of Lean and Agile. They think they can wrap the uncertainties of software development up in a nice little package and then just execute, usually followed by failure. They spend a great deal of time and money trying to exactly predict the future. That expenditure of time and money doesn’t add value to the customer. Managers that understand that Agile know that there is a better way. They will instead focus on the priorities of the near term in detail, and leave the future to take care of itself. They have very detailed two week plans with less detailed quarterly plans. These plans are guided by a general corporate strategy that doesn’t focus on the exact implementation details. These managers also think in smaller features rather than large functionality. This adds a great deal of value to customers, since the features that matter most are the ones that the team focuses on in the near term and then are able to deliver to the customers that are paying for them. Agile managers also realize that stale software is very costly. They know that keeping the technology in their software current is much less expensive and risky than large rewrites that occur infrequently and schedule time in each release for refactoring of the existing software. Agile Executives Even though Agile is a better way, I’ve still seen failures using the Agile process. While some of these failures can be attributed to the team, most of them are caused by managers, not the team. Managers fail to understand what Agile is, how it works, and how to get the information that they need to make good business decisions. I think this is a shame.     (c) denise carbonell I think Johannes Ernst summarized pretty well what happened in a broad sense in regards to OpenId, Cardspace and Facebook Connect. However, I'm more interested in the lessons we can take away from this. First  - "Apple Lesson" - If user-centric identity is going to happen it's going to require not only technology but also a strong marketing campaign. I'm calling this the "Apple Lesson" because it's very similar to how Apple iPad saw success vs the tablet market. The iPad is not only a very good technology product but it was backed by a very good marketing plan. I know most people do not want to think about marketing here - but the fact is that nobody could really articulate why user-centric identity mattered in a way that the average person cared about. Second - "Facebook Lesson" - Facebook Connect solves a number of interesting problems that is easy for both consumer and service providers. For a consumer it's simple to log-in without any redirects. And while Facebook isn't perfect on privacy - no other major consumer-focused service on the Internet provides as much control about sharing identity information. From a developer perspective it is very easy to implement the SSO and fetch other identity information (if the user has given permission). This could only happen because a major company just decided to make a singular focus to make it happen. Third - "Developers Lesson" -  Facebook Social Graph API is by far the simplest API for accessing identity information which also is another reason why you're seeing such rapid growth in Facebook enabled Websites. By using a combination of URL and Javascript - the power a single HTML page now gives a developer writing Web applications is simply amazing. For example It doesn't get much simpler than this "http://api.facebook.com/mewilcox" for accessing identity.   • Object oriented EDI handling in PHP

    I'm currently starting a new sub project where I will: Retrieve the order information from our mainframe Save the order information to our web-apps' database Send the order as EDI (either D01b or D93a) Receive the order response, despatch advice and invoice messages Do all kinds of fun things with the resulting datasets. However I am struggling with my initial class designs. The order information will be retrieved from the mainframe which will result in a "AOrder" class, this isn't a problem, I am not sure about how to mold this local object into an EDI string. Should I create EDIOrder/EDIOrderResponse/etc classes with matching decorators (EDIOrderD01BDecorator, EDIOrderD93ADecorator)? Do I need builder objects or can I do: // $myOrder is instance of AOrder $myOrder->toEDIOrder(); $decorator = new EDIOrderD01BDecorator($myOrder); $edi = $decorator->getEDIString(); And it'll have to work the other way around as well. Is the following code a good way of handling this problem or should I go about this differently? $ediString = $myEDIMessageBroker->fetch(); $ediOrderResponse = EDIOrderResponse::fromString($ediString); I'm just not so sure about how I should go about designing the classes and interactions between them.   • Which hosts have low latency across United States and Europe?

    I'm looking for some information on web hosts that have low latency (<100ms) to both the United States and Europe. The host can be in either the United States or Europe. Latency is most important to the United States, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway. Should be able to provide managed hosting. Hosting at multiple locations is not what I'm looking for. Answers should contain at least some latency information from multiple locations, preferably from Los Angeles, New York, London, Amsterdam and Oslo. Also some information on your experience with this host is preferred, do not rant, do provide details of your package (with or without SLA, dedicated or VPS etc.). From my own little research I found that probably New York based hosts can offer low latency to all these locations, but I do not have much statistics to back that up other than my own ping is about 85ms to New York from the Netherlands.

  • Seeking some advice on pursuing MS in CS from Stanford or Carnegie Mellon or Caltech

    What kinds of projects are given preference in top notch colleges like Stanford, Caltech, etc to get admission into MS programme in Computer Science? I have an average academic portfolio. I'm pursuing Btech from a not so popular university in India with an aggregate of 67%. I'm good at designing algorithms and possess good knowledge of core subjects but helpless with my percentage. So, I think the only way I can impress them is with my project(s). Can anyone please suggest me the kinds of projects that are given preference by such top level institutes? Could you please also suggest some good projects? My area of interest would be Artificial Intelligence or any application/software/algorithm design which could be of some help to common people. Or if you have any other random idea for my project then please share it with me. Note: Web based projects and management projects like lib management wouldn't be my priority.
