• possible to use an IP derived from Dynamic DNS in htaccess IP allow/deny commands?

  On a website I manage, I want to use an .htaccess file to allow access to a certain administrative directory only from my home IP address, which is dynamically assigned by my ISP and therefore changes -- not regularly, but it does happen. I also have an account from DynDNS and have one of the auto-update clients making sure it always points to my actual home IP address. I don't actually host anything at home; I just have set up the Dynamic DNS account. Is there any way to combine these features: that is, is it possible write the .htaccess allow/deny commands at my outside webhost in a way that my home IP address is not hard coded into the command, but instead is somehow derived from the Domain Name that the DynDNS has assigned me, by doing a real-time lookup every time the directory's .htaccess file is hit? • Needs management tool for .java files

  When I open the src file in the project folder in Package Explorer in Eclipse, it says the following: Error retrieving content description for resource '/GuiAdd/src/GuiAdd.Java.' Now, the directories of the source projects shown in Eclipse Package explorer doesn't always have the source file to link to, causing this message. I need a way to sync the folders in the correct directory without overwriting the newest ones. Some source files I project files of the root which the Package explorer links to may be the correct versions but other source files in the root may not have the latest source or any source. I am not using svn/git or other depository programs.

  In late 2001 I developed an internal talk on designing hardware for easier error injection, prevention, diagnosis, and correction. (This talk became the basis for my paper on injecting errors for fun and profit.) In that talk (but not in the paper), I articulated 10 principles of RAS design, which I list for you here: Protect everything Correct where you can Detect where you can't Where protection not feasible (e.g., ALUs), duplicate and compare Report everything; never throw away RAS information Allow non-destructive inspection (logging/scrubbing) Allow non-destructive alteration (injection) (that is, only change the bits you want changed, and leave everything else as is) Allow observation of all the bits as they are (logging) Allow alteration of any particular bit or combination of bits (injection) Document everything Of course, it isn't always feasible to follow these rules completely all the time, but I put them out there as a starting point.

• Java graphic objects as in flashgames

  How is it possible (with the standard Java2D engine) to use small sprites like graphic objects? For those who don't know what I mean, in all those Flash-games like on Facebook they put small sprites on the screen which react to mouse-over and clicks. I tried to do the same in Java but can't find a good method. Swing components always spread over the whole bitmap, but I only want to get a reaction from the object when the mouse is over a pixel that's not transparent. So basically checking every time if the object below the mouse contains a non-transparent pixel (which i believe could be pretty intense in a gameloop or repaint loop). I have no idea how to implement such a thing efficiently.

• Chrome window freezes in Ubuntu

  Sometimes, especially when I open pages that have some kind of multimedia contents, Chrome freezes. It always happens directly after opening a new tab. In contrast to the way Chrome usually has only tabs crashing, the entire windows freezes. If I have multiple separate Chrome windows open, the others keep working. I run Ubuntu 12.04 and Chrome in version 20.0.1132.47 but this has been going on since I last set up my machine around half a year ago. Anyone having the same problems or an idea what could be wrong here?

  It's first time when i use ubuntu.I downloaded and installed 12.04 version of ubuntu.It works fine but sometimes when i shut my pc down from ubuntu and i try to start it again,nothing shows on the screen.It's always black and it shoud appear Acer logo(i have acer aspire 5573)It's like the sistem is restart again and again but it can't boot ubuntu(or windows,i use dualboot)The meniu(where i can choose between windows and ubuntu it's not displayed because the pc don't start correctly.When this happens i shut down the pc definitively and i remove the battery and i put it again.Then everything works fine.How do i repair it?I think that could be a incompatibility with the pc because with windows everything works fine.Help please and sorry for my horrible english...Thanks!

• HTML5 article tag application for the iPad

  I've used article tags on websites. My understanding and practice is to use the article tag for publication content. I always use HTML/HTML5 tags as their intended purposes and not at will. Recently, I've seen an HTML template that uses the article tag for the non-publication page content such as the content of an About Us page or any other generic page. I asked the why it was used this way and the (vague) explanation was that it had to do with the way the iPad read the tag. Is this true?

• Are there any surveys on to what degree developers like or hate scrum?

  Background: During a conference an analyst pointed out in a tweet that developers hate scrum. Myself and another person responded that this was not the case, and started discussing different scenarios on why developers would dislike scrum. One of the scenarios where that lazy developers are not able to hide in a scrum project. They are constantly challenged by the team to contribute. This discussion resulted in a blog post and video http://elsewhat.com/2010/05/20/lazy-developers-hate-agile-and%C2%A0scrum/ I've gotten three comments which I've tried to answer in a neutral way, but they comments do point out that there are some people who loathe scrum (and I am always 100% certain they are not lazy developers). • Creating an OpenGL FPS camera: I have the position and orientation vectors, now what?

  I have been struggling to create a first person camera in OpenGL ES 2.0 without using gluLookAt(). I grab the camera's orientation vectors (the way it's looking) from the current modelview matrix, and use that to calculate the new forward/backward (Z) translation value. I then calculate the strafe (X) value from the dot product of Z and Y (which is always 1.0). So, I have all the information I need to create a view matrix, but how do I do that without using gluLookAt? Almost all the examples I've seen use gluLookAt, but no such function exists in OpenGL ES 2.0. Besides, one of the moderators on cprogramming.com mentioned that gluLookAt is not appropriate for FPS cameras: http://cboard.cprogramming.com/game-programming/135390-how-properly-move-strafe-yaw-pitch-camera-opengl-glut-using-glulookat.html I am really confused by all the conflicting information I'm getting. • Algorithm to Sort member into groups

  I'll have to develop an application which the final purpose is to sort all the member into groups. Each group will have the same size. And I had to put the members into the groups several times during the execution of the program. To put the member into the groups, a lot of critria are to be look at, because we do not want that two people are put again together two time in the same execution of the program, of course if it's the only way to find a correct solution, it' fine, and there is a lot of other criteria, like some people can be willing to be always with another member. So to resume, we have n members to put in groups of size 8. After the first "round" we have to do again the algorithm to sort them differently. And a lot of critria may go in the calculation of the priority of each member Do you have any idea?

• Blank Screen ... No Bios Loading Screen Either

  I don't even know how long it's been but I had given up. until now. My screen does not come on AT ALL, not even and the Bios loading screen. I have to connect it to my TV in order to see. But there's one thing that has always started it back up, and that is by running a hard ware Diagnostics * Provided by DELL* . It is definitely has something to do with Ubuntu. I know that for sure, because I remember running an update and BAM . That was it for the screen. How could I restore my screen back to Life ? I have a Nvidia Graphics Card.

• Unit testing multiple conditions in an IF statement

  I have a chunk of code that looks something like this: function bool PassesBusinessRules() { bool meetsBusinessRules = false; if (PassesBusinessRule1 && PassesBusinessRule2 && PassesBusinessRule3) { meetsBusinessRules= true; } return meetsBusinessRules; } I believe there should be four unit tests for this particular function. Three to test each of the conditions in the if statement and ensure it returns false. And another test that makes sure the function returns true. Question: Should there actually be ten unit tests instead? Nine that checks each of the possible failure paths. IE: False False False False False True False True False And so on for each possible combination. I think that is overkill, but some of the other members on my team do not. The way I look at it is if BusinessRule1 fails then it should always return false, it doesn't matter if it was checked first or last.

• kernel panic - diagnosis?

  I'm having a kernel panic problem - my machine will run for hours, maybe all day and then have a panic attack. • Has anyone used Genetify for A/B testing

  I'm working on a small project that will likely run on Wordpress, I always like to run some split testing to improve conversion rates for various goals. Typically if its a small site that I either don't have a budget for or want to keep it as inexpensive as possible I use Google Website Optimizer if I do have a budget I go with Visual Website Optimizer both are great and affordable, but for fun I was checking out alternatives and found Genetify which is an open source project and has some neat features. In searching around I don't see many people talking about it and wondered if anyone here has used it. If so what do you think about it?

• Designing a single look up entity

  In almost every application you have this look up entity that provides a dynamic references. This are things like type, category, etc. These entities will always have id, name, desc So at first I designed different entities for each look up. Like education_type, education_level, degree_type.... But on a second thought I decided to have on entity for each of these kinds of entities. But when I am done with the design and check the relation this entity will be referenced by almost all entities in the system and I don't believe that is appropriate. So What is your take on this? Can you give me some clear pros and cons?

• Switching Workspace in Xubuntu Oneiric is slow, how to improve it?

  The processor is a single core AMD Sempron 1.6 GHz. While it is a few years old, workspace switching under Ubuntu Lucid / Gnome to ANY workspace was always instant, even when a lot of apps were open. Under Xubuntu Oneiric, switching to an empty workspace is instant, but switching to a workspace with 5 open applications takes 8 to 9 seconds. Compiz is not installed. Since XFCE is said to be more light weight than Gnome, switching should be instant too, isn't it ? How can this be improved ?

• Empty Disk when trying to install dual-boot system

  I recently purchased an SSD to speed up my computer experience. Before, I had Windows 7 and Ubuntu in a dual-boot system. The plan was to install Windows 8 on the SSD and then set aside ~30GB for the system files of Ubuntu. I installed Windows 8 just fine on the SSD, then I booted the Ubuntu install CD to make my partitions like always - but GParted tells me the entire SSD is unallocated. Now I am afraid I will lose my Windows installation if I try to do anything to it. Why does GParted think there is no partition on the SSD? Shouldn't it be 4 Partitions, like the Windows installer told me? And is it possible to ignore this and install Ubuntu on the hard disk (where it, frankly, already is) and somehow make it possible to install GRUB on the SSD to revert my dual-boot system without damaging the installed Win8?

• Tile transitions - external vs internal

  I've been looking at a couple of games and noticed that the transitions between tiles are handled somewhat different. I was wondering which methods are to be used in different situations and why. I'm currently using internal edges in a top-down game, and it's working out so far. But I don't want to run into problems later on, and have to redo the whole tileset. I noticed that platforming games mostly use the internal edges, and top-down games mostly use external and hybrid transitions. I can see how these tiles are used to create "depth" in top-down games, where the player apears to be standing in front of a wall for example. But it seems unlikely that such a small feature decides the entire method for tile transitions. You could always alter the bounding box to create the same effect.

  I was always confused about header files. They are so strange: you include .h file which doesn't include .cpp but .cpp are somehow compiled too. • XFCE4 Empty Volume Control Applet

  I just wanted to ask, what could I mess up? My situation is this: In XFCE4.10 (!) on the panel0 I put the Indicator Applet. It always showed me the volume control and network icons. When I updated to 13.10 and after cleaned some stuff, removed some orphaned package, I noticed, the volume control applet is showing mute and if I clicked on it there is an empty drowdown menu like 10x5 px.. Now it became completely useless. So my question is WHAT should I reinstall or change to get the control work?.. :/ Thanks.

  I'm debugging a second stage boot loader for a PC with SATA AHCI controller. I'm able to enumerate the PCI bus and find the hard disk. So far, so good. Now, lspci in my notebook (Dell Inspiron 1525) show me: -[0000:00]-+-1f.0 Intel Corporation 82801HEM (ICH8M) LPC Interface Controller +-1f.1 Intel Corporation 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) IDE Controller +-1f.2 Intel Corporation 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) SATA AHCI Controller \-1f.3 Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) SMBus Controller My question: Is SATA AHCI Controller always function 2 in any PC? If not, how I found? I don't pretend to be general; booting my notebook will be good enough, without compromise further refinements.
