  Is there a Generic USB TouchScreen Driver 12.04? Device 03eb:201c I've been looking for 4 days solid (not very skilled) and can't find a solution. I have a generic tablet: C97- Atom N2600 9.7" 2GB 32GB Bluetooth WiFi WebCam Ext.3G Windows 7 Tablet PC Using 12.04 and cannot find a driver. I installed android and the touchscreen works but still lots of other bugs. Oh well, stuck with Windows 7 and not happy about it. Will keep trying, but too much time wasted already. • The Retail Week Conference 2012 - Interview with Paul Dickson

  Recently we attended the Retail Week Conference at the Hilton London Metropole Hotel in London. The conference proves to be an inspirational meeting of retail minds and the insight gained from both the speakers and the other delegates is invaluable. In particular we enjoyed hearing from Charlie Mayfield, Chairman at John Lewis Partnership, about understanding how the consumer is viewing the ever changing world of retail; a session on how to encourage brand-loyal multichannel activities from Robin Terrell of House of Fraser with Alan White of the N Brown Group, Vince Russell from The Cloud and Lucy Neville-Rolfe from Tesco; and a fascinating session from Tim Steiner, Chief Executive of Ocado, about how the business makes it as easy as possible for consumers to shop on their various platforms, which included some surprising usage statistics. Oracle's own Vice President of Retail, Paul Dickson, also held a session with Richard Pennycook, Group Finance Director at Morrisons, about the role of technology in accelerating and supporting the business strategy. Morrisons' 'Evolve' programme takes a litte-and-often approach to updating its technology infrastructure to spread cost and keep the adoption process gentle for staff, and the session explored how the process works and how Oracle's technology underpins the programme to optimise their operations using actionable insight.   This past weekend I was at a major bookstore chain and looking for a particular book.  Rather than ask the clerk, I went to my smartphone and went online to find the book title, author, and competing price.  I know I’m not alone in this effort and more and more individuals (and businesses) will use the power of mobility to tilt the scale in their favor. Armed with a mobile device – smartphone or tablet – folks will use them to research, compare, and ultimately purchase.  A recent PayPal survey found that 46% of respondents plan to use a mobile device this holiday season to make a purchase.   An astounding 27% of consumers in an e-tailing group survey commissioned by Oracle, use a tablet device daily or several times a week to research products and services. Beyond researching or making purchases, 35% of consumers use their smartphone to receive offers and coupons, and 32% access coupons and redeem them at their local retail store.  And with GPS capabilities in smartphones and tablet (and with user’s approval), retailers will start pushing coupons and offers directly to phone users based on their proximity to their store (or their competitors). Security is one concern that both shoppers, companies and phone manufacturers will have to deal with in the coming years.  In that same Oracle-sponsored e-tailing group consumer survey, 32% of consumers were concerned about giving their credit card information via a smartphone. • Big Data for Retail

  Right up there with mobile, social, and cloud is the term "big data," which seems to be popping up lots in the press these days.  Companies like Google, Yahoo, and Facebook have popularized a new class of data technologies meant to solve the problem of processing large amounts of data quickly.  I first mentioned this in a posting back in March 2009.  Put simply, big data implies datasets so large they can't normally be processed using a standard transactional database.  The term "noSQL" is often used in this context as well. Actually, using parallel processing within the Oracle database combined with Exadata can achieve impressive results.  Look for more from Oracle at OpenWorld as hinted by Jean-Pierre Dijcks. McKinsey recently released a report on big data in which retail was specifically mentioned as an industry that can benefit from the new technologies.  I won't rehash that report because my friend Rama already did such a good job in his posting, Impact of "Big Data" on Retail. The presentation below does a pretty good job of framing the problem, although it doesn't really get into the available technologies (e.g. Exadata, Hadoop, Cassandra, etc.) and isn't retail specific. Determine the Right Analytic Database: A Survey of New Data Technologies So when a retailer asks me about big data, here's what I say:  Big data refers to a set of technologies for processing large volumes of structured and unstructured data.  Imagine collecting everything uttered by your customers on Facebook and Twitter and combining it with all the data you can find about the products you sell (e.g. reviews, images, demonstration videos), including competitive data.  Assuming you could process all that data, you could then personalize offers to specific customers based on their tastes, ensure prices are competitive, and implement better local assortments.  It's really not that far off.

• JavaOne Latin America Underway

  JavaOne Latin America started officially today, but lots of networking has already happened. Last night some JUG leaders, Java Champions, and members of the Oracle Java development and marketing teams had dinner together. The conversation ranged from the new direction of JavaFX to how to improve JUG attendance. Maricio Leal shared the idea some Brazilian JUGs have of putting Java Evangelists and experts on a boat and having them visit JUGs on cities along the Amazon river.  We discussed ideas, and shared dessert pizza. It was the perfect community get together! If you see Brazilian Java Man Bruno Souza, ask him what he is bringing to the party.Today, at JavaOne Latin America, all the sessions were full, and developers were spilling into the hallways. Session content was selected with the help of 14 Java thought leaders from Latin America. JavaOne Program Committee Chair, Sharat Chander, said "I'm thrilled that at this JavaOne over half of the content is coming from the community." Between sessions, developers take advantage of the Oracle Technology Network lounge to grab a snack and use their laptops.  OTN LoungeIt promises to be a great JavaOne.

  Hi Frank, today is your last day at Oracle. I cannot belief that retirement is an alternative to designing software and improving products for decades. I might figure it out myself in a couple of years. Our ways have crossed several times. And I am extremely thankful for that. I still remember my first session on an Apple Lisa. It must have been around 1985. I was still in school, and we were visiting the University of Hamburg to get some orientation on the departments. When I started I chose Informatics. And I suppose the Apple Lisa played a significant role in my decision. Is it fate that I later wrote about Apple Lisa? I’ve attended your presentation and public demo of the Lisa System at CHI ’98 in Los Angeles. Maybe a video still exists. I should look it up and publish it somewhere. You had also booth duty for Sun Microsystems – presenting HotJava Views, a user interface for a network computer. And you were handing out VHS tapes (!) of Starfire. I still have mine – but no player anymore. Then I joined Sun in 2002, and I guess I popped up in your office each time when I came to Santa Clara. The SEED mentoring program finally made it possible that we exchanged and discussed many ideas on the past and future of HCI. Dueling Interaction Models of Personal-Computing and Web-Computing at MEDICI 2007 is one of the results. But do you remember for instance also our jam session with Phil Clevenger on Hello World? • MySQL Connect Conference: My Experience

  It was a great experience to attend the MySQL Connect Conference for the first time ever. Personally I was very much enthralled to present about "How to make MySQL Backups" besides attending different sessions to absorb more knowledge about the technical prospects of MySQL. One of the agenda items in my presentation was "MySQL Enterprise Backup" functionality and features. There were total of 40 attendees in the session, who were very much interested about the MySQL Enterprise Backup product and gave positive feedback as well as areas of improvements on our product. Some of our features brought lot of excitement and smile amongst our customers including,1. Performance improvements in MEB 3.8.02. Incremental Base option from MEB 3.7.1 where there is no need to specify the directory name of the previous backup to fetch the lsn values and instead can directly fetch from backup_history table using --incremental-base=history: last_backup3. only-innodb-with-frm option introduced in MEB 3.7 version. A true online hot backup of InnoDB tables.I also attended a session with similar topic "MEB Best Practices" conducted by Sanjay Manwani, where he double clicked all the features and best strategies of backup & restore. I also got an opportunity to attend other sessions including,* Enabling the new generation of web and cloud services with MySQL 5.6 replication* Getting the most out of MySQL with MySQL Workbench* InnoDB compression for OLTP* Scaling for the Web and Cloud with MySQL replication.Above all, had some special moments in the conference including meeting some of the executives / colleagues for the first time f2f. On a whole, the first MySQL Connect conference was a great success in terms of manifesting the features of our products, direct feedback from customer and team building.  We also had some applauding yahoo moments when Tomas Ulin announced different releases including MySQL 5.6 RC, Connector Python 1.0 and ODBC 5.2 release, MySQL Cluster 7.3, additions to MySQL Enterprise edition etc.

Some of the key features released include: 1. New Look and Feel with Simplified Navigation Users are now one click away from the most valuable resources. Additionally, there are now focused areas which allow users to navigate more effectively. Users can review their individual achievements, create a dedicated Training Plan to broaden their knowledge, or use the new Company Corner to view their company’s achievements. Your view as an Oracle employee has been modified and the Company Corner will provide links to allow access to Partner Workgroups and other links specific to your partner data. 2. Resell Competency Tracker This new functionality has been created to allow partners to track their progress toward becoming Resell Authorized. • Solution for installing the ADF 11.1.1.6.0 Runtimes onto a standalone WLS 10.3.6

  A few customers are hitting the following problem with regards to JDeveloper 11.1.1.6.0 so it's worth documenting a solution. As noted in my previous post the ADF Runtimes for JDeveloper 11.1.1.6.0 will work against a 10.3.5 and 10.3.6 WLS server.  In terms of the JDeveloper 11.1.1.6.0 download Oracle has coupled the 10.3.5 server with that release, not a 10.3.6 server. This has caught some customers out as they are attempting to use the JDeveloper installer to load the 11.1.1.6.0 ADF Runtimes into the middleware home of a standalone 10.3.6 WLS server.  When doing so the installer complains as follows: "The product maintenance level of the current server (WebLogic Server: 10.3.5.0) is not compatible with the maintenance level of the product installed on your system (WebLogic Server: 10.3.6.0).  Please obtain a compatible installer or perform maintenance or your current system to achieve the desired level." The solution is to install the runtimes using the standalone 11.1.1.6.0 ADF Runtime Libraries installer available from OTN (see the options under "Application Development Runtime").

• Scheduled Deprecation of Legacy Obligation Features

  The Obligation object in ETPM includes some functionality and tables that, to our knowledge, are not being used by customers and implementers are this time.  Removing this logic and the related tables should benefit the performance of and simplify logic executed during Obligation maintenance processing. The Release Notes included with ETPM v2.3.1 announced that the product plans to deprecate the functionality on Obligation for Contract Terms, Contract Quantities, Tax Exemptions, Terms & Conditions and Obligation Type Start Options.  Our plan is to remove this functionality in the next release of ETPM. We have already confirmed with most project teams that these features are not being used so the deprecation should have no impact on existing designs or process. If you think your project may be impacted by this deprecation, please review any Business Object that has been created for the Obligation maintenance object to make sure that no elements are being defined for any of the following child tables: -          CI_SA_CONTERM -          CI_SA_CONT_QTY -          CI_TOU_CONT_VAL -          CI_SA_TC   As part of this deprecation, the following administrative tables are being removed along with their related metadata: -          Contract Quantity Type -          Tax Exempt Type -          Terms and Conditions Please contact myself or the Oracle Tax Product Management team if your implementation has actually used these objects in their designs. We can discuss options to mitigate impacts of this planned deprecation.  We will continue to announce planned deprecations in the Release Notes for each release and will contact project teams ahead of time to confirm that these deprecations will have little to no impact on our customers.

  Oracle B2B 11g, provides the out-of-the box ability to connect to IBM MQ to exchange the message. This is support is provided via JMS offering of Oracle B2B. This is an addition to the stack of existing communication capabilities of B2B with trading partners. There are 2 ways of connecting to IBM MQ using B2B 1. Credential based connectivity 2. .bindings based connectivity As a pre-requisite to connect to IBM MQ, it is required to provide the following libraries in classpath: a. com.ibm.mqjms.jar b. dhbcore.jar c. com.ibm.mq.jar d. com.ibm.mq.jmqi.jar e. mqcontext.jar f. com.ibm.mq.pcf.jar g. com.ibm.mq.commonservices.jar h. com.ibm.mq.headers.jar i. fscontext.jar j. jms.jar Add the above jars into domain library directory and the directory usually located at $DOMAIN_DIR/lib. The jars located in this($DOMAIN_DIR/lib) directory will be picked up and added dynamically to the end of the server classpath at server startup.   I have helped firms evaluate software demos and delivered demos in diverse industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, life sciences, and travel (to name just a few). Here are a few suggestions. First, which vendor has the best fit for your industry? Make sure that the vendor demo staff tell you clearly throughout the demo (not just in a passing comment), what portion of each business process and screen is standard, what has been configured, what has been custom coded, and what has been provided by a partner.
