• What is the basic loadout for an open source web developer?

  Thus far, I have mainly been an embedded developer, but I am interested in having the flexibility to do mobile and web development as well. I think my tools should include the following, but probably a lot more. LAMP stack. Java IDEs like Eclipse and IntelliJ. JS frameworks like Dojo, Node.JS, AngularJS, (is it better to mix or commit to one?). Cloud solutions like EC2 and Azure (again, ok to mix or better to commit to one?). Google APIs. Continuous integration server. Source control tools with Git for new work, SVN, CVS, +others for imports. FTP server. Unit test runners. Bug trackers. OOAD modeling tools or plug-ins? Graphic design tools? Hosting services. XML / JSON / other markup? Content management, SEO? I am also interested to know if there are tools where it might be better to mix, match, or support all available (maybe for source control) and others where the full focus should be on one (maybe Java vs. C# or Windows vs. Linux vs. MacOS). Perhaps some of these questions need context of whether the projects will be greenfield (just pick favorite) or maintenance (no choice, each project continues legacy, sometimes with a poor tools).

• Can I force a workstation to use a specific domain controller?

  I'm on a domain that I can't control the domain controllers on, but I can control my systems. All the domain controllers are part of one site, and that cannot change. However, one of the domain controllers is not working correctly and the admins in charge of it are taking forever to resolve the issue. There are 6 total domain controllers... for some reason my workstations/servers are still attempting to use the bad one to authenticate my users. Is there a way to force a workstation to use specific domain controllers? or, better yet, force it to NOT use the bad one? Thanks in advance!

• Getting network interface device name in powershell

  I needed a powershell 2 script to get the name and device name of each interface like it is shown in network connections in control panel. Should be easy... $interfaces = Get-WmiObject Win32_NetworkAdapter $interfaces | foreach { $friendlyname = $_ | Select-Object -ExpandProperty NetConnectionID $name = $_ | Select-Object -ExpandProperty Name } However, $name comes back as "Broadcom BCM5709C NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client)", whereas in control panel it shows "Broadcom BCM5709C NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client) #69", because there are multiple cards. I can't find that number anywhere in the properties. How can I get both the Name and Device Name, exactly as shown in Network Connections, in powershell 2 on windows server 2008 r2?

• Sendmail Alias for Nonlocal Email Account

  I admin a server which is running a number of web applications for a software dev team (source control, bug tracking, etc). The server has sendmail running solely as a transport to the departmental email server over which I have no control. We have someone who is still in the department but no longer on the dev team so I need to configure the transport agent to redirect all outgoing email (which would be coming from these applications) to the person that has taken their place. I added an entry in /etc/aliases like such: [email protected]: [email protected] But when I run /etc/init.d/sendmail newaliases I get the following error: /etc/mail/aliases: line 32: [email protected]... cannot alias non-local names So clearly I'm doing something I shouldn't. Is there a way to get aliases to work with non-local names or alternatively is their a way to accomplish my goal of redirecting outgoing mail for this user to another one? Technical Specs if the matter: Ubuntu 6.06 sendmail 8.13 (ubuntu provided package)

• keymapping when ssh-ing from mac to linux

  I'm using Lion to ssh -X to a linux machine and work on some code thats located on it. I open up an editor on the remote machine (usually matlab) and program on it. My problem is that in the linux there is no concept of the command key. So if I want to copy some text from a local window to the editor that runs on the remote, I need to to command-c to copy, and then control-v to paste. This obviously drives me nuts. I was wondering if there is a way to change the keymapping such that the command key will be recognized as a control key on the remote processes. Or is this something I need to change on my local (mac) X configuration?

• Webcam microphone input in Gnome/pulseaudio

  Just got a "Trust" webcam, which gets recognized on my Ubuntu Lucid. It has a built in microphone - which also gets recognized - however, I cannot really get it to act as the system microphone input? Here are some screenshots of what is shown by gnome-volume-control: The default window shows Trust webcam - which has two profiles: "Analog Mono Input" and "Off" - of course, I have it on "Analog Mono Input": However, on the "Input" tab - there is no matching "device for sound input" - neither a matching connector: Then I installed pavucontrol - but that doesn't show that much more; it tells first that gnome-volume-control reads from "Internal Audio Analog Stereo": Then in "Input devices" tab, there is again nothing resembling the mic input from webcam: Finally, under "Configuration" tab, the "Trust" webcam shows, but even if its profile is on "Analog Mono Input", nothing much happens:   So, does anyone know how I could get this webcam microphone to be recognized as the system input?   Cloud computing is here, whether we want it or not.  When I say "a walk in the clouds” I am not talking about a pleasant romantic comedy, but a real alternative to hosting applications on-premise.  For years we have had the power to host our web sites on remote systems.  Sure, challenges existed.  Mostly web sites.  I could, with a few clicks, create a account at a myriad of web host sites, put my site in the hands of a remote hosting company, and boom, I was a site on the internet.  But choices, power, and management was limited. Now, we have a set of services to let us approach and power and control we love, but with scalability of the data center.  My personal web site is hosted on a laptop running hyperV in my basement.  I have to manage the machine, patch it, make sure it is powered up.  This is fine for the “hello, this is my dog skippy site” that I maintain. If the football pool I run has an issue, one of the 10 users I have calls or emails me and I go check it out.  All is well. But this falls well below the needs of even the simplest of enterprises.  A business needs a stronger datacenter, a better pipe to the world.  Do I really want to base my business on a dynamic dns and a dsl line from the local phone company? Cloud computing gives us most of what I value (control, a db of my own, updating my site from Visual Studio). • How To Remove A Broken Program From the Programs and Features List In Windows 7?

  On a Windows 7 64-bit desktop, there is a program on the Programs and Features list (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features) that refused to uninstall. The error obtained is: Error 1723. There is a problem with this Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run I suspect filer were deleted or corrupted. The big problem is that the program refused to install itself over the broken version. So how to I manually clean up the list of installed program?

• Bootable and remote controllable imaging software?

  I am looking for an imaging software, that one can boot from CD or usb stick (therefore without installing anything on the system!) and then control by some kind of remote desktop. So something like a combination of Acronis TrueImage's Bootable Media and Windows Remote Desktop. I don't even need to be able to store the backup on a network drive, as an external usb hdd is attached for these purposes. Background: A system that is normally controlled by SSH / command line and therefore has no keyboard/mouse connected that I could use to control Acronis TrueImage.

• Issues with Apache redirect to www-prefixed URL

  I have a website with domain mysite.com. I would like to have it so that if a user types in "mysite.com" it will redirect to "www.mysite.com". Additionally, "mysite.com/subdir" will also redirect to "www.mysite.com/subdir". I've looked and made changes with vhosts and also rewrites, but it's not working for the "mysite.com/subdir"-"www.mysite.com/subdir" case. Every time I type in "mysite.com/subdir", it will redirect to "www.mysite.com". Only "www.mysite.com/subdir" works. Not sure how to troubleshoot this. I turned on rewrite logs and didn't see anything obvious, yet. This is my config files so far. Please let me know what I'm missing. Thanks! • Domain pointing to wrong subscription in Plesk 10

  I recently moved a domain name in the Plesk 10 control panel from one subscription to another. DNS is managed by another server so there is no change in DNS at all. The IP address is shared and remains the same so there is really no need for a DNS change.   I have Windows 7 and a Logitech G15 keyboard. One of the programs with the Logitech G15 allows you to control media players such as Winamp with the playback keys on the keyboard. Problem I'm having is that, even though I have told this program to not control Windows Media Player, every time I use it to pause Winamp, it then hits plays (or unpauses) Windows Media Player. Even more annoying given that Windows Media Player isn't even running as an active GUI program and instead as a background process, so I hear the sound of whatever the last video it was I playing. If I end-task wmplayer.exe it spins right back up but at least now it has no knowledge of a video to play, but this is annoying. How can I either a) Have Windows Media Player in Windows 7 completely unload when I close it, or b) Have Windows Media Player in Windows 7 ignore any sort of global hotkeys?

  I just got a virtual dedicated server at GoDaddy. I got the Simple Control Panel. There doesn't seem to be a way to create a guest ftp user through this control panel and I was told it must be created through SSH. I have a program called Putty which can log into the server via SSH. I'm familiar with logging in but does anyone know what the commands are to be used to create a guest ftp user and give them Read and Write access to a particular folder? Regards gourav

• Debugging an IP Camera

  Further to my previous question on ServerFault here, I finally can view the stream on RTSP however I still cannot view the camera stream in a web browser. The IP camera uses an activeX control in Internet Explorer. And although I can configure the camera settings from IE, I cannot view the stream it shows connecting for a few sec and shows disconnecting. I have forwarded the HTTP, RTSP and Stream ports of the IP camera. the public port is 7071 and private port is 7070. When I try to see the connections in TCPView it shows that the ActiveX control in IE is trying to connect to port 7070 which is quite unusual since it should connect to 7071 Also the state shows SYN_SENT for sometime and then disconnects. I have really no clue what's going on and why?

• Can't run .net software on Samsung Omnia Pro B7330

  I've got a Samsung Omnia Pro B7330, and am unable to run any program for .net compact framework on it. My last three Smartphones had been HTC brand, and all the programs I tried are just simple winform apps, which ran on all HTC phones. But not on the Omnia. Whenever I try to start an app, I get an "unexpected error" / "NotSupportedException" at: Microsoft.AGL.Common.MISC.HandleArt() System.Windows.Forms.Control._InitInstalce() System.Windows.Forms.Control..ctor() System.Windows.Forms.Button..ctor() MyApp.InitializeComponents() The proper compact framework 2.0 is already installed in the rom, installing CF 3.5 didn't change anything. Anyone can tell me whats the problem with this phone?

• What issues ensue from having multiple versions of Office installed?

  My ultimate question is embodied in the title but I thought it might be helpful to others if I detail what instigated my inquiry and my examination of the problem. To me, the first rule of software updates is Primum non nocere -- first, do no harm. So with my Windows 7 system containing both Office 2003 and Office 2010 I blithely proceeded to install this month's updates from Microsoft, containing updates for both versions of Office. While Microsoft officially does not recommend running multiple versions (see, for example, Running Multiple Versions of Microsoft Excel it is possible; I have had two versions installed for a year or more and have never run into an issue before. One thing that is always mentioned is installation order, i.e., the one you want to open files by default should be installed last. I wanted 2010 as my default so I had indeed installed 2003 first then, years later, 2010. So with this round of Windows updates, either it installed patches to 2010 before 2003, knocking out the file association, or the 2003 patch was more comprehensive, in the sense of touching the file association while the 2010 did not. In any case, after updates, double-clicking a .xls file opened 2003 rather than 2010. Web search indicated either: Use the file associations control panel to re-associate .xls files with the correct version of excel. I looked at this first, but it showed what seemed to be an unversioned "Excel" associated with .xls files so I did not check further. (This turned out to be an error on my part; more later.) Re-install versions in the desired order; I find this unreasonable. Run the repair option of the Office installer on the desired version; still seems more work than one should need. Run excel from the command line with "/regserver" on the one to be the default and "/unregserver" on the other. Good idea, but further search indicated that neither 2007 nor 2010 support "/regserver" contrary to some posts (e.g. Default Program With Multiple Versions Installed). Since this was a Windows Update issue and Microsoft provides free support for such, I inquired there as well, but succeeded only in getting the suggestion to uninstall all other versions, period; not acceptable to me. What worked for me was going back to the file associations control panel and manually selected the Office 2010 version of Excel. While it appeared no different in the control panel, it did fix the double-click issue. So if all it takes is this simple fix after an update, I can live with that. What I am wondering is: Has anyone seen any other problems related to having multiple versions of Office installed?

• Java's Object.wait method with nanoseconds: Is this a joke or am I missing something

  I was checking out the Java API source code (Java 8) just out of curiosity. And I found this in java/lang/Object.java. There are three methods named wait: public final native void wait(long timeout): This is the core of all wait methods, which has a native implementation. public final void wait(): Just calls wait(0). And then there is public final void wait(long timeout, int nanos). The JavaDoc for the particular method tells me that, This method is similar to the wait method of one argument, but it allows finer control over the amount of time to wait for a notification before giving up. The amount of real time, measured in nanoseconds, is given by: 1000000*timeout+nanos But this is how the methods achieves "finer control over the amount of time to wait": if (nanos >= 500000 || (nanos != 0 && timeout == 0)) { timeout++; } wait(timeout); So this method basically does a crude rounding up of nanoseconds to milliseconds. Not to mention that anything below 500000ns/0.5ms will be ignored. Is this piece of code bad/unnecessary code, or am I missing some unseen virtue of declaring this method, and it's no argument cousin as the way they are?

• Eclipse: Help with EGit

  I want to be able to use a version control system. Although Eclipse comes with CVS, I think it's better that I use a distributed version control system, such as GIT. I was pretty much sold after reading this article. Anyway, I installed EGit and followed this guide on how to set it up. However, I ran in to a few problems: Adding .project and .classpath inside .gitignore did not seem to work. When I try to open a committed file, it throws an error, saying: "IO error reading Git blob [...]" What am I doing wrong? If more information is needed, please specify and I will give.

• Securing a persistent reverse SSH connection for management

  I am deploying demo Ubuntu 10.04 LTS servers in environments I do not control and would like to have an easy and secure way to administer these machines without having to have the destination firewall forward port 22 for SSH access. I've found a few guides to do this with reverse port (e.g. howtoforge reverse ssh tunneling guide) but I'm concerned with security of the stored ssh credentials required for the tunnel to be opened automatically. If the machine is compromised (primary concern is physical access to the machine is out of my control) how can I stop someone from using the stored credentials to poke around in the reverse ssh tunnel target machine? Is it possible to secure this setup, or would you suggest an alternate method?

• No Games Installed with Windows 7 Professional

  Ordered a PC from HP with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit preinstalled, of course. No Win7 disc was included with computer. There are no games installed. I have tried to "activate" them through the Control Panel procedure, but each time I do it there is an error message telling me that not all components installed. And my Games folder is empty. Is there a solution? Synetech asked what I meant by "activate through Control Panel." I'm referring to the "Turn windows features on" procedure that's supposed to work for everybody. I'm sure it does for most, but it didn't for me.

• Import Java Trusted Certificate to JRE

  I need to install a certificate from a Java app to a lot of people. I want to use a one click program or batch file to import it as a Trusted Certificate(in Control Panel-Security-Certificate). Then they won't need to press always allow first time they use the application. I have extracted the needed certificate as both a .csr and as a .cer (the .csr via Control Panel and the .cer via keytool). Now I need to get one of them back without any clicking in menus. I don't really understand the documentation of importing .cer with keytool and would like an example. Or are there an easier way than using keytool?

• How do I restore the default applets to Gnome's notification area?

  I have a fresh install of Karmic Koala. In a botched attempt at trying to change my default window manager, I somehow removed at least three applets from the notification area: network manager (nm-applet), volume control (gnome-volume-control-applet), and the battery meter (???). Now if I logout and back in, these applets don't run, but I can start them from the command line. Because it's a fresh install, I completely removed my luser account and home directory. After recreating my account, I was frustrated to find that the applets are still missing and no obvious way to add them back. How can I restore the default configuration?

  In Windows there is a place under the Control Panel called Get Programs and Install a program from the network (in Win 7 at least), possibly a slightly different name in Vista, but it was there too. The question is basically: How do you publish programs to that so users can go there and install? Bonus follow up: Is it a good way to deploy optional programs? (Compared to using GPO's.) In Windows 7 you can go to Control Panel, Programs, Programs and Features, and on the left hand menu: Install a program from the network.
