• How can I use a CanoScan N640Pex scanner over a USB/parallel cable?

  I have an old CanoScan N640Pex flat bed scanner and a USB-to-parallel port cable through which I can connect it to my PC. Unfortunately neither Simple Scan nor XSane detect the scanner. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 (plus updates and backports) with kernel 3.2.0-31-generic. dmesg tells me this when I plus the cable in: [256411.641910] usb 7-1: new full-speed USB device number 10 using uhci_hcd [256411.872392] usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 10 if 0 alt 1 proto 2 vid 0x067B pid 0x2305 [256411.872417] usbcore: registered new interface driver usblp lsusb shows this device for my cable: Bus 007 Device 010: ID 067b:2305 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2305 Parallel Port The device node created is /dev/usb/lp0 crw-rw---- 1 root lp 180, 0 Sep 9 17:46 /dev/usb/lp0 There is no extra information from any of these commands when I attach the scanner to the cable and power it on, though. I suspect I might need to change something in /etc/sane.d/canon_pp.conf, but I have no idea what to put for the ieee1284 line, since there is pretty much zero documentation for that parameter. So how can I get it to work?

  I have a Dell Inspiron 531S that originally came loaded with Windows Vista. A couple years ago I purchased a copy of Windows 7, formatted the hard drive and installed the updated operating system. In the process I formatted the 10 GB recovery drive partition on drive D as it was no longer needed for Windows Vista. I would really like to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS alongside Windows 7 using the empty 10 GB drive D:. I have two questions. (1) Can Ubuntu be installed on a separate partition, a drive removed from the boot sector on drive C:? (2) If so would Grub be installed in the boot sector and properly select Windows 7 on drive C: or Ubuntu 12.04 on drive D?

• Why does the BADSIG/"Untrusted sources" error recur forever?

  On at least a dozen occasions, I've spent 2-3 hours figuring out how to get Ubuntu 11.10-12.10 to either update or acquire software from software center, or both. I want to fix whatever is causing the BADSIG problem once and for all; I've wasted so much time trying to get this to work well enough that I can rely on it, but the same problem comes back after a couple weeks of normal updates and software center usage. Don't refer me to a standard posted solution on the web---whatever it is, I've used it more times than you have. The question isn't whether I can get it to work right this afternoon. I can. The question is what is causing the problem to recur regularly across 3 releases. Notice: I use this computer 4-5 hours per week and I do little on it. PDFs, Latex, FireFox, Mendeley, and that's it. I don't constantly install new software, and I don't fiddle with things unnecessarily.

• Slow writing HDD speed, Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, Thinkpad T520i

  It seems that (but I'm not completely sure), that when I'm copying files from gigabit network to HDD, I can't use full potential of the network which in my case is about 60 MB/s, because HDD writing is so slow like lower than 10 MB/s, and also it's slowing down the whole system which becomes pretty much unresponsive, almost impossible to work with. Copying files to samba share residing at Ubuntu machine, connected to share from Windows 7, I'm completely sure my network equipment is OK, and there's no CPU intensive process on Ubuntu except smbd getting about 10-20% from time to time which I think is OK. Something here is burried deep I think, maybe even in kernel. Already tried to switch from AHCI to compatibility mode, and turning acpi on and off - nothing helped. So it's like HDD buffer is full and emptying slowly while machine is sluggish, load is about 3 to 4. Somebody experienced the similar problems? Some help on troubleshooting process and identifying the cause would be helpful too :) Thanks!

• Can't access some websites using Ubuntu 13.10

  Something's wrong with Ubuntu. Since I've upgraded to 13.10, I can't access some websites for no apparent reason. I've tried everything imaginable to solve this problem : Made sure that MTUs are the same, Disabled IPv6 in both the network manager and used browsers, Deactivated my network keys, DMZed my computer, Used other DNS like Google and OpenDNS, Checked that no firewall was running my computer ... And it's the same result. I even tried to reinstall Ubuntu a couple of times, but no luck. The most annoying thing about it is I can't access wordpress.org! So, there's no way it could be an ISP restriction of some kind. When I use a VPN, I can access pretty much anything. I'm really frustrated because I have to use wordpress.org very often.   In my production environment, I have close to 10 Ubuntu 12.04 Servers and I want to get the list of users from them. I am looking for some kind of script or tool (non-gui) to get the same. Yes, I can get the list from /etc/passwd and /etc/groups files but it would be good to have a tool or script to do this due to the following reasons. I have right now 10 systems in Ubuntu and 30 systems in Windows 2003. I am recommending my organization and IT to move all the systems to Ubuntu except the one running MS SQL server We do not have good Ubuntu admins with us and they should not mess up with the system if I give some manual commands I also need to find out date of creation of user, group, password standards like strength, expiry etc Please help me as I want to automate the process and get the list on weekly basis from IT team.   I bought a brand new computer yesterday (Toshiba Satellite Pro L770-10T : Intel Core i5 2410M, 2,3 GHz, 4096 Mo RAM, nVidia GeForce GT 525M) that simply won't boot any livecd I tried. I am using debian/ubuntu for a long time but this is the first time I can't boot a livecd Here is what I tried without success: Ubuntu 11.04 i386 and x64 both desktop and alternate Debian stable livecd old working ubuntu livecds including 8.x 9.x 10.x On ubuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386.iso I had a kernel panic On 11.04 packages were corrupted although md5 and sha1 were correct I must add that those were burned on different cds CD-R or CD-RW. • Storing a looong lookup table

  Background The product i am working on has a very long lookup-table. the table contains static data and cannot be auto generated. there are about 500 rows and 10 columns. columns have mostly integers and strings. to complicate the matters, there are actually two such tables. every row in table-1 maps to zero-or-more rows in table-2. we use an SQLite database with two tables. the product installer places the SQLite file in the installation directory. the application is written in dot-net and we use ADO to load the data once on startup. now, the lookup table grows. in each release a month, we add about 10 new entries existing entries are adjusted. every release we fine tune existing entries. The problem a team of (10) developers work on the lookup table. Code goes in the SVN, but the little devil the SQLite does not. this prevents multiple developers to work on it. we do take regular backups of the file, but proper versioning is not possible. we never know who did the breaking change. the worse thing is we dont know if there is any change at all. diff'ing databases is tedious if not impossible. the tables are expected to grow quite large in years to come and we would need developers to work in parallel on it. the data is business critical. we need to be able to audit changes made to it. Question What would be a solution for the problems outlines above? one idea was to transform the whole thing to XML and treat it like just another source file. that way SVN can do the versioning and we can work in parallel. but the data shows relational behavior. with XML we loose the unique and foreign-key constraints. also we cant query it with sql like ease. any help here will be appreciated.

• Is there any guarantee about the graphical output of different GPUs in DirectX?

  Let's say that I run the same game in two different computers with different GPUs. If for example they are both certified for DirectX 10. Is there a guarantee that the output for a given program (game) is going to be the same regardless the manufacturer or model of the GPU? I am assuming the configurable settings are exactly the same in both cases. I heard that it is not the case for DirectX 9 and older, but that it is true for DirectX 10. If someone could provide a source confirming or denying it, it would be great. Also what is the guarantee offered. Will the output be exactly the same or just perceptually the same to the human eye?

• Performance impact of the new mtmalloc memory allocator

  I wrote at a number of occasions (here or here), that it could be really beneficial to use a different memory allocator for highly-threaded workloads, as the standard allocator is well ... the standard, however not very effective as soon as many threads comes into play. I didn't wrote about this as it was in my phase of silence but there was some change in the allocator area, Solaris 10 got a revamped mtmalloc allocator in version Solaris 10 08/11 (as described in "libmtmalloc Improvements"). The new memory allocator was introduced to Solaris development by the PSARC case 2010/212. But what's the effect of this new allocator and how does it works? Rickey C. Weisner wrote a nice article with "How Memory Allocation Affects Performance in Multithreaded Programs" explaining the inner mechanism of various allocators but he also publishes test results comparing Hoard, mtmalloc, umem, new mtmalloc and the libc malloc. Really interesting read and a must for people running applications on servers with a high number of threads.

  My client has a XenServer 6.0.2 installation with 2 Window Server 2008 R2 virtual machines. Whenever the virtual machines are rebooted they lose their IP settings (IP address, subnet, gateway). Each time after a reboot I need to login to each VM via XenCenter and re-apply the required static IP settings. This causes issues with connected iSCSI drives within each VM - drives need to be reconnected after each reboot. • Why does IDLE continue to crash? [migrated]

  Idle keeps crashing and I can't figure it out. After restarting the computer and reinstalling Python, none of which seemed to work, I looked to my peers and was told to "install one of the Tcl/Tk". After getting another opinion I was also told that I already had this and found it to be true but decided to try it anyway since it continued to crash. Nothing has improved and I have an assignment due. Any ideas on why this continues to happen and what I can do to fix the crash?   I lose a ton of productivity by getting distracted while waiting for my tests to run. Usually, I'll start to look at something while they're loading --- and 15-20 minutes later I realize my tests are long done, and I've spent 10 minutes reading online. Make a small change... rerun tests ... another 10-15 minutes wasted! How can I make my computer make some kind of alert (Sound or growl notification) when my tests finish, so I can snap back to what I was doing??

• Connected to Access Point but no internet connection?

  I am trying to use my school's WPA Enterprise network to access the internet with my Three-OS laptop. I currently have Windows7, Ubuntu11.10 and Backtrack5 installed. I can use my home's WPA2 network without any issues with the 3 OS. I can successfully connect to my school's network with the 3 OS but I can only browse the internet with windows7. Ubuntu network-manager and Backtrack WICD both say that I am connected to the Acces Point but I cannot browse the internet. I have tried uninstalling network-manager and installing WICD but it did not solve the problem. Every time I connect to the Access Point, I am able to browse the internet for about 10 seconds. I have tried disabling IPV6 I have tried changing DNS.

  I have a test server that is running Ubuntu Server in a windows network. Networking is configured as follows auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp hostname ca the command cat /etc/hostname returns ca. But when I use the command host 10.49.156.196 (its current IP address) from another machine on the network, it returns as follows: 196.156.49.10.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer owner-pc.xxxxx.xxx I can access the machine via SSH and browser using IP address, but not by name ca Any suggestions? I tried installing samba/nmbd as suggested in another post, but to no avail.
