• dpkg --set-selections from 11.10 on 12.04LTS

  I have to move a server to a different DC in a different country. The server is currently running 11.10, but the new fresh installed OS will be 12.04. The hardware of both is completely different. In order to install the same packages that the server currently uses, I am thinking of exporting all packages to a list and then run this list on the new machine. I will after that proceed with transferring the configuration files for the LAMP stack. My question is if this will work, or if there will be a problem because of the differences in the versions of the OS? What is the correct way to do it? PS. I have no access to KVM to reload the OS as an image, so this would not be an option.

• Can I automatically make my Nvidia card's fan quieter?

  I have a machine with an Nvidia graphics card. Unfortunately the GPU fan is very loud. It's very annoying at times. We never use this machine for intense 3d work - that GPU is probably not working very hard at all. I'm pretty sure I can run it at a much lower fan-speed without causing any problems. The nvclock utility can be used to manually adjust the fan-speed of my Nvidia graphics card. I'd like to call this utility automatically when the machine boots up. Is there some kind of system service which I can use to automatically apply this kind of system-wide configuration? Even better, is there a system monitoring service which can poll the GPU temperature and adjust the various system fan-speeds accordingly? Thanks!

I researched a lot and I found out that I should add my JSON config class to configurations, so I added this line to gameName.gwt.xml, which is in core folder: <extend-configuration-property name="gdx.reflect.include" value="com.las.get.level.LevelConfig"/> But it did not work out. I have no idea where should I place this line or where I should change to make my web app work, so I can read JSON files.

  I need elegance and performance: how to decide by the "best implementation" for each DOM algorithm that I face. This simple "DOMNodeList grouper" illustrate many little dilemmas: use iterator_to_array or "populate an array", when not all items need to be copied. use clone operator, cloneNode method or import method? use parentNode::method() or documentElement::method? (see here) first removeChild or first replaceChild, no avoids "side effects"? ... My position, today, is only "do an arbitrary choice and follow it in all implementations" (like a "Convention over configuration" principle)... But, there are another considerations? About performance, there are some article showing benchmarks? PS: this is a generic DOM question, any language (PHP, Javascript, Python, etc.) have the problem.

• Server asks for username and password on boot

  I installed the Ubuntu server 12.04 easily, however, when I boot it asks for a username and password. I don't know my previous username or password from Windows XP. I am currently trying to install any version of Ubuntu I have in my arsenal to recover the PC, but all intents so far have failed. They worked on other computers but not on this one, the error I get is No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! I have tried all the solutions found on this site but to no avail. I don't have a Windows Ultimate boot disk and I'm out of CDs to burn. I can, however, make live USBs. Any Suggestions?

• Problems with Intel graphics and external display

  I have Asus Zenbook ux31 with Intel HD 3000 GPU and Ubuntu 12.10 64 bits. I usually use external monitor and when update GPU controller it removes previous configuration. So after updates Ubuntu only detect external monitor and when I enter to Ubuntu with laptop's monitor Unity doesn't start and I only see black screen. If I re-install Ubuntu all works fine until next GPU update :(( Another think that after some GPU update Ubuntu doesn't detect fine monitor and I have to restart 1-2 times Ubuntu to Unity starts fine ¬¬ Someone have some problem and know some solution? I hope some day Intel GPU will work fine with Ubuntu!

• Rsyslog problem after ubuntu upgrade 10.4 to 12.4

  I was using Ubuntu 10.4 until last week for storing the log informations of a external device with rsyslog. After upgrading to ubuntu 12.4 the logging of TCP doesn't works anymore. (There are just no pakets visible - not even with tcpdump - aold ubuntu machine still sees the pakets.) UDP works with the identical configuration on the ubuntu machine and a "use UDP" on the external device. Are there any changes in rsyslog, that could explain this?   I know that an SSL wildcard certificate (*.example.org) can be used to support many names under the domain (a.example.org, b.example.org, c.example.org). I also know that the * is only good for matching a single level of name. That is, *.example.org will not work on a.b.example.org. What if I used a certificate with the name ..example.org? I'd like to build a certificate with the following name configuration: CN=example.org subjectAltName=DNS:example.org, DNS:*.example.org, DNS:*.*.example.org, DNS:*.*.*.example.org I've tried building a few like this as self-signed certificates, but I've not had good results. For example, chrome tells me "Server's certificate does not match the URL." Is it possible to have nested wildcards in a certificate, or do the popular browsers not support this?

• The Properties dialog box not working for any Start Menu Program Lubuntu 14.04

  When Lubuntu 14.04 first came out, the Properties dialog was present for all Start Menu Programs but did not work when right-clicked on as nothing happened and no other box popped up the the Start Menu Program information, such as the executable info, etc. Then the issue was fixed. Now the issue has returned when I upgraded to Lubuntu 14.04.1. Is there any way to retrieve the Properties info pop-up box via a configuration file? Does the issue have to do with a faulty LXShortcut? I noticed when I uninstalled the LXShortcut the Properties tab disappeared. When I re-installed the Properties tab returned however once again when you right-click on the Properties tab nothing happens. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

• Distorted text in programs

  I've installed Ubuntu 11 with gnome and in some point the text in the programs becomes unreadable like this. It's not only the text, but even the desktop background looks awful. I've tried to add section in xorg.conf, but it didn't helped out. • Switching from Debug into Release Mode with VS2010 as IDE and Intel C++ Compiler 13

  I have a code of a Plug In from an SDK. The code is in Debug Mode. I use Intel Compiler which only applies optimizations in Release Mode. Under configuration manager of the project only "Debug" mode is defined. How could I switch to "Release" mode and enable all Intel Compiler's optimizations? If I enable them on debug mode nothing is applied (Empty Report). I couldn't find the trick to do so. Thank You.

• 11.04 Wireless is disabled by hardware switch Hp Compaq nc6220

  Here is some backstory if it is helpful: I had Windows Vista on my computer and I wanted to use wubi to install Ubuntu, everything was fine until I booted into the OS. It said my wireless was disabled by a Hardware Switch. So I booted back into Vista and it disabled there too. I have gotten rid of vista and installed 11.04 instead. It still has this error and as far as I know there is no switch anywhere and the fn keys do nothing. • Disable automatic starting of sshd?

• What has 'rm -r ~' done to my home directory?

  gedit creates hidden backup files ending with '~'. I wanted to do a recursive cleanup of my directory tree. The command rm *~ will delete all local files ending with '~' I thought rm -r *~ . would delete all files in the whole tree, but I typo-ed rm -r ~. There was a message some directory could not be deleted and I quit the command. The question is: What have I been deleting? I did notice that my Filezilla configuration was gone. Does this command delete all hidden directories from the home dir?

  Problem at a glance: For Win 7, Ubuntu One changes the startup value to enabled whenever I run it More Details: If I change the startup value in: Control Panel System and Security Administrative Tools System Configuration Startup to disabled for Ubuntu One (since I don't want it to start when I log on), it succesfully stops Ubuntu One from starting at logon However, if I start the Ubuntu One manually, it changes the above startup value to enabled. Is there a way to prevent Ubuntu One from changing its startup value? I want it to stay disabled. I haven't found anything relevant in Ubuntu One's settings dialog.

• Is there anything different in cifs for 13.04? I can't mount with old config

  I've recently upgraded my station to 13.04 and all mounts I had on /etc/fstab stopped working. I can't even mount them at terminal (mount -t cifs ...), through smbclient or nautilus. I always get 'NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE'; Provided nothing has changed at the server, I assume some configuration has changed in the packages of 13.04. Maybe password encryption, maybe port? I have just spent 10 hours looking for a solution and, since I have a serious time retrain, I am considering rolling back to 12.10. Could someone give a clue where to find it? Thanks all.
