SQL Saturday 43 (Redmond, WA) Review

Last Saturday (June 12th) we held a “SQL Saturday” (more about those here) event in Redmond, Washington. The event was held at the Microsoft campus, at the Mixer in our new location called the “Commons”. This is a mall-like area that we have on campus, and the Mixer is a large building with lots of meeting rooms, so it made a perfect location for the event. There was a sign to find the parking, and once there they had a sign to show how to get to the building. Since it’s a secure facility, Greg Larsen and crew had a person manning the door so that even late arrivals could get in. We had about 400 sign up for the event, and a little over 300 attend (official numbers later). I think we would have had a lot more, but the sun was out – and you just can’t underestimate the effect of that here in the Pacific Northwest. We joke a lot about not seeing the sun much, but when a day like what we had on Saturday comes around, and on a weekend at that, you’d cancel your wedding to go outside to play in the sun. And your spouse would agree with you for doing it. We had some top-notch speakers, including Clifford Dibble and Kalen Delany. The food was great, we had multiple sponsors (including Confio who seems to be at all of these) and the attendees were from all over the professional spectrum, from developers to BI to DBA’s. Everyone I saw was very engaged, and when I visited room-to-room I saw almost no one in the halls – everyone was in the sessions. I also saw a much larger Microsoft presence this year, especially from Dan Jones’ team. I had a great turnout at my session, and yes, I was wearing an Oracle staff shirt. I did that because I wanted to show that the session I gave on “SQL Server for the Oracle DBA” was non-marketing – I couldn’t exactly bash Oracle wearing their colors! These events are amazing. I can’t emphasize enough how much I appreciate the volunteers and how much work they put into these events, and to you for coming. If you’re reading this and you haven’t attended one yet, definitely find out if there is one in your area – and if not, start one. It’s a lot of work, but it’s totally worth it. Wireframing: A Day In the Life of UX Workshop at Oracle

The Oracle Applications User Experience team's Day in the Life (DITL) of User Experience (UX) event was run in Oracle's Redwood Shores HQ for Oracle Usability Advisory Board (OUAB) members. I was charged with putting together a wireframing session, together with Director of Financial Applications User Experience, Scott Robinson (@scottrobinson). Example of stunning new wireframing visuals we used on the DITL events. We put on a lively show, explaining the basics of wireframing, the concepts, what it is and isn't, considerations on wireframing tool choice, and then imparting some tips and best practices. But the real energy came when the OUAB customers and partners in the room were challenge to do some wireframing of their own. Wireframing is about bringing your business and product use cases to life in real UX visual terms, by creating a low-fidelity drawing to iterate and agree on in advance of prototyping and coding what is to be finally built and rolled out for users. All the best people wireframe. Leonardo da Vinci used "cartoons" on some great works, tracing outlines first and using red ochre or charcoal dropped through holes in the tracing parchment onto the canvas to outline the subject. (Image distributed under Wikimedia commons license) Wireframing an application's user experience design enables you to: Obtain stakeholder buy-in. Enable faster iteration of different designs. Determine the task flow navigation paths (in Oracle Fusion Applications navigation is linked with user roles). Develop a content strategy (readability, search engine optimization (SEO) of content, and so on) Lay out the pages, widgets, groups of features, and so on. Apply usability heuristics early (no replacement for usability testing, but a great way to do some heavy-lifting up front). Decide upstream which functional user experience design patterns to apply (out of the box solutions that expedite productivity). Assess which Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF) or equivalent technology components can be used (again, developer productivity is enhanced downstream). We ran a lively hands-on exercise where teams wireframed a choice of application scenarios using the time-honored tools of pen and paper. Scott worked the floor like a pro, pointing out great use of features, best practices, innovations, and making sure that the whole concept of wireframing, the gestalt, transferred. "We need more buttons!" The cry of the energized. Not quite. The winning wireframe session (online shopping scenario) from the Applications UX DITL event shown. Great fun, great energy, and great teamwork were evident in the room. Naturally, there were prizes for the best wireframe. Well, actually, prizes were handed out to the other attendees too! An exciting, slightly different aspect to delivery of this session made the wireframing event one of the highlights of the day. And definitely, something we will repeat again when we get the chance. Legal concerns with orchestrating a music submission contest

My team and I are getting pretty far along in the development of our latest game and have been thinking about audio. We decided to host an audio submission contest where we will offer a little cash and some equity stake in the game as prizes. We are also giving away copies of the game to participants. We hope not only to find audio for our game, but to meet some cool sound artists and promote the game a bit through the process. First of all, is this even a good idea? What are some potential dangers in doing this? Will it even be well received among artists? Secondly, I wrote up some Terms and Conditions in my best legal-speak to try to protect us and clarify how the contest will be run. Are these sufficient to make sure everyone involved is treated fairly and is legally protected? They are as follows: All submissions (The Submission) must be licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License (CC-BY-3.0) By applying a CC-BY-3.0 license, you (The Submitter) expressly give Detour Games (and all members wherein) permission to copy, distribute, transmit, modify, adapt, and make commercial use of The Submission. The Submitter must own all rights to The Submission and be within their rights to license it as specified and submit it. The Submitter claims responsibility for the legality of The Submission. If The Submission is found to infringe on the rights of a person or entity other than those of The Submitter, Detour Games will not be held liable as all responsibility and liability for the legality of The Submission is that of The Submitter's. Handler for (null) returned invalid result code 70007 / causing error 500?

I am getting these errors on some pages in my site (php/apache/linux/mysql vps) on intervals and can't seem to find any reproducible scenario : Handler for (null) returned invalid result code 70007 or Handler for (null) returned invalid result code 70014 It occurs mainly on pages where file (image) uploads are done. It then causes a 500 error. Google hasn't returned anything conclusive, has anybody come across these errors ?

Bugzilla mail_delivery_method using TLS for Gmail

I installed the TLS as described in http://www.dawood.in/bugzilla%5Falerts%5Fusing%5Fgmail.html and verified that the package is installed. Restarted the Apache server. Log in as admin to the bugzilla. Gone to Administration - Parameters - Email I can't see the option for SMTP::TLS under mail_ delivery_method. Any ideas, Thanks, Matt

Apache2 name based virtual host always redirect 301

I've got a server (runnging Debian Squeeze) with Apache 2.2, there are 4 site running there. I'm using namebased virtulhosts because I've got a single IP. Initial configuration has been made with Webmin and probably something has been messed up.. firstdomain.com is my default domain and is working correctly, seconddomain.com is another site that is working. Now I want to add lastdomain.tk as a new site, so I've made this config file: root@webamp:/etc/apache2# cat sites-available/lastdomain.tk.conf <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /home/server/Condivisione/RAID/lastdomain.tk ServerName www.alazanes.tk ServerAlias alazanes.tk </VirtualHost> I've added it to enabled-sites and restarted apache. The problem is that if I go to lastdomain.tk (or www.lastdomain.tk) I'm redirected to firstdomain.com with a 301 redirect. Both lastdomain.tk and www.lastdomain.tk are A DNS records pointing to my IP address. i do not understand how but someone is uploading a php file into the public_html directory of my CentOS 6 server like statisticsuQPo.php this php file gives me "linux10+cfcd208495d565ef66e7dff9f98764da" and it is sending spam mail's without end. i have remove the file maybe 10 times but i do got it back every day. how can i solve this problem? is there anything wrong with my apache configuration?

Nginx+Passenger: 502 Bad Gateway from Nginx when passing urlencoded URLs in GET vars

Web log analyser with daily statistics per URL

Are there any good web server log analysis tools that can provide me with daily statistics on individual URLs? I guess I'm looking at something that can drill down into particular URLs and on particular days rather than just a monthly summary report. The following don't seem to meet my needs as they don't offer drilling down to get more detailed info: awstats analog webalizer (I'm running an nginx frontend into Apache with nginx outputting 'combined' format logfiles if it makes any difference.)

Apache2 cgi's crash on odbc db access (but run fine from shell)

Problem overview (details below): I'm having an apache2 + ruby integration problem when trying to connect to an ODBC data source. The main problem boils down to the fact that scripts that run fine from an interactive shell crash ruby on the database connect line when run as a cgi from apache2. Ruby cgi's that don't try to access the ODBC datasource work fine. And (again) ruby scripts that connect to a database with ODBC do fine when executed from the command line (or cron). This behavior is identical when I use perl instead of ruby. So, the issue seems to be with the environment provided for ruby (perl) by apache2, but I can't figure out what is wrong or what to do about it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get these cgi scripts to work properly? I've tried many different things to get this to work, and I'm happy to provide more detail of any aspect if that will help. Rackspace Cloud Server DNS Add SPF Records

I've setup my new LAMP server on Rackspace Cloud and the Basic A, C and MX DNS setup is no problem. I need to add an SPF record for a project I am migrating over to this new server that allows emails from a 3rd party server and I can't seem to figure out how to do this. There doesn't seem to be an option to add a TXT record in my Rackspace Cloud Server interface and I installed the BIND DNS on my Apache server, but I am not sure how to get that to been seen, etc.

Glassfish V3 won't start

Hi everybody, I installed NetBeans 6.8 and tried to run the GlasshFish V3 server. I'm working under Windows Vista 32 Bits. First, it won't run. Can't access server running CentOS 6.3 in vmware

I just installed CentOS on a vmware machine that uses a bridged connection, installed apache, php and mysql, but when I run service httpd start I get a warning(?): Starting httpd: httpd: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using localhost.localdomain for ServerName I can connect to the server using putty, so I really have no idea why it won't load in the browser. EDIT: Httpd starts successfully, return [ OK ]. Running netstat -tuplen | grep :80 yields: tcp 0 0 :::80 :::* LISTEN 0 40392 15894/httpd I am able to connect with putty to 192.168.0.113, but browser says can't connect to 192.168.0.113

Can IBM IHS server support more than one Websphere Application Server plug-in location?

We want http://webserver.com/foo to point to an instance of WAS 6.0, and http://webserver.com/foo2 to point to an instance of WAS 7.0, running on the same server, but with different port numbers. This is a temporary thing, as we need to have both servers running as we transition our applications from running on 6.0 to 7.0. The webserver is IBMIHS (an Apache variant), and it needs to use the WebSphere plugin to connect to the WAS servers. Will this work? Any drawbacks?

uploading via http post (multipart/form-data) silently fails with big files

When uploading multipart/form-data forms via a http post request to my apache web server, very big files (i.e. 30MB) are silently discarded. On the server side all looks as if the attached file was received with 0 bytes size. On the client side all looks like it had been uploaded succesfully (it takes the expected long time to upload and the browser gives no error message). On the server, nothing is logged into the error log. An entry is logged into the access log as if everything was ok (a post request and a 200 ok response). These uploads are being posted to a php script. In the php script, If I print_r $_FILES, I see the following information for the relevant file: [file5] => Array ( [name] => MOV023.3gp [type] => video/3gpp [tmp_name] => /tmp/phpgOdvYQ [error] => 0 [size] => 0 ) Note both [error] = 0 (which should mean no error) and [size] = 0 (as if the file was empty). My php script runs fine and receives all the rest of the data except these files. move_uploaded_file succeeds on these files and actually copies them as 0byte files. I've already changed the php directives max_upload_size to 50M and post_max_size to 200M, so neither the single file nor the request exceed any size limit. max_execution_time is not relevant, because the time to transfer the data does not count; and I've increased max_input_time to 1000 seconds, though this shouldn't be necessary since this is the time taken to parse the input data, not the time taken to upload it. Is there any apache configuration, prior to php, that could be causing these files to be discarded even prior to php execution? Some limit in size or in upload time? I've read about a default 300 seconds timeout limit, but this should apply to the time the connection is idle, not the time it takes while actually transferring data, right? Needless to say, uploads with all exactly identical conditions (including file format, client and everything) except smaller file size, work seamlessly, so the issue is clearly related to the file or request size, or to the time it takes to send it.

Logging network activity of LAMP server using BASH

I've got a Fedora LAMP server on Amazon EC2 functioning as a HTTP pseudo-proxy (Sorry, don't know the terminology- It's not a true proxy where requests are relayed through apache, rather client requests are being translated by a PHP script, which then sends a new request.) I'd like to be able to fully log the HTTP cycle CLIENT - PROXY PROXY - SERVICE SERVICE - PROXY PROXY - CLIENT I'm hoping to do this using BASH tools- thinking netcat? Looking for advice and examples. Thanks!
