• Explain the Peak and Flag Algorithm

So I ran across this site http://codility.com/ Which gives you programming problems and gives you certificates if you can solve them in 2 hours. The very first question is one I have seen before, typically called the Peaks and Flags question. If you are not familiar A non-empty zero-indexed array A consisting of N integers is given. A peak is an array element which is larger than its neighbours. More precisely, it is an index P such that 0 < P < N - 1 and A[P - 1] < A[P] A[P + 1] . For example, the following array A: A[0] = 1 A[1] = 5 A[2] = 3 A[3] = 4 A[4] = 3 A[5] = 4 A[6] = 1 A[7] = 2 A[8] = 3 A[9] = 4 A[10] = 6 A[11] = 2 has exactly four peaks: elements 1, 3, 5 and 10. You are going on a trip to a range of mountains whose relative heights are represented by array A. You have to choose how many flags you should take with you. The goal is to set the maximum number of flags on the peaks, according to certain rules. Flags can only be set on peaks. What's more, if you take K flags, then the distance between any two flags should be greater than or equal to K. The distance between indices P and Q is the absolute value |P - Q|. For example, given the mountain range represented by array A, above, with N = 12, if you take: two flags, you can set them on peaks 1 and 5; three flags, you can set them on peaks 1, 5 and 10; four flags, you can set only three flags, on peaks 1, 5 and 10. You can therefore set a maximum of three flags in this case. Write a function that, given a non-empty zero-indexed array A of N integers, returns the maximum number of flags that can be set on the peaks of the array. For example, given the array above the function should return 3, as explained above. Assume that: N is an integer within the range [1..100,000]; each element of array A is an integer within the range [0..1,000,000,000]. Complexity: expected worst-case time complexity is O(N); expected worst-case space complexity is O(N), beyond input storage (not counting the storage required for input arguments). Elements of input arrays can be modified. Obviously my assumption is that the beginning or end of an Array can be a peak, is this not the case? The problem goes here:- 1) I have declared a structure above and its object as array(buck[]). 2) Now when I declare this object array along with the structure, it works fine.. I have commented this thing right now. 3) But when I declare this object array inside the function.. because ultimately i have to declare inside function( as i need to build a recursive program, where objects will be created in very recursive call) then the program is throwing segmentation fault. • Edit of self referencing HABTM in cakephp works, sometimes

  I'm using a self referencing HABTM model with Participants. You sign up for an event and when you log in to your reservation/profile you see a list of other participants and you can choose to add yourself and others into various groups; share hotel room, share transportation from airport etc. What I've managed so far: 1) In my profile I see the list of all other participants with checkboxes. Great so far. 2) Adding another participant works fine. Next time I edit, the participant I added is shown as checked. 3) Removing another participant works fine too as long as you still have checked participants before you submit! Again, with words: There are 3 participants. I'm logged in as one of them, and I see the 2 other people on the participants list. I choose to check both of them. This works fine (always). Later I choose to remove one of them (by unchecking the checkbox and hitting submit). This also works fine (always). If I want to remove the last checkbox... nothing is updated (always!). What's curious is that I can add and remove any odd combination of participants and it will always work UNLESS I choose to remove every participants in one go (removing a one and only participant is a special case of "remove all checked participants"). As far as I know, HABTMs work by first deleting all relations, then re-saving them. I can see that in my tables when I remove, add, remove, add the same participant over and over again - the id on the HABTM table is always increasing. When I deselect all participants at once, however, the relations are not updated. The ids stay the same, so it's like the save never happened. This behaviour is so specific and peculiar, I have a feeling I'm missing something obvious here. • merge 2 php arrays which aren't of the same length by value

  Excuse me if this has indeed been asked before, I couldn't see anything that fitted my needs out of the dozens of similar titled posts out there ;) I'm trying to merge 2 php arrays which aren't of the same length, and merge them on a value that exists from identical key = values within both arrays. My first query produces an array from a nested set: array ( 1 => array ( 'node_id' => 1, 'lft' => 1, 'rgt' => 4, 'moved' => 0, 'label' => 'Home', 'entry_id' => 1, 'template_path' => '', 'custom_url' => '/', 'extra' => '', 'childs' => 1, 'level' => 0, 'lower' => 0, 'upper' => 0 ), 2 => array ( 'node_id' => 2, 'lft' => 2, 'rgt' => 3, 'moved' => 0, 'label' => 'Home', 'entry_id' => NULL, 'template_path' => '', 'custom_url' => 'http://google.com/', 'extra' => '', 'childs' => 0, 'level' => 1, 'lower' => 0, 'upper' => 0 ) ); My second array returns some additional key/values I'd like to insert to the above array: array ( 'entry_id' => 1, 'entry_title' => 'This is my title', ); I want to merge both of the arrays inserting the additional information into those that match on the key 'entry_id', as well as keeping the sub arrays which don't match.   I've got a problem with RegEx and Delphi 2k9 (Win32). I get the following Error: First chance exception at $7C812AFB. • Insert some data at later point once serialization(binary serialization) is done for a class

  My application is written in C# and I am a newbie to C#. I am facing with a problem during serialization. The problem is as follows. There are many classes in my project and when serialization is called on one of the main class object it serializes itself and during this process many of the member objects are also get serialized. This whole serialization is done in to a file with extension say ".bin". This bin file size should be of size max 20MB. In this process of serialization one of my other class also gets serialized to a stream, this class is having a big array. The size of this array or list can be of 80 MB or more. So during serialization i have serialize all the objects other than this array and depending upon the size left in the 20MB I need to add in between the serialization the number of array elements which can fit in the remaining memory. For the other array elements left out I have to create a similar kind of .bin file with all the objects serialized and in between need to insert the number of array elements that can fit there. The main problem here is the array elements get inserted at runtime and this list keeps on increasing. So i should be creating .bin files continuously until my application runs. Any ideas how can i implement a solution for this problem? Thanks in Advance.

  The Problem I am tring to do an ajax request to a PHP script, however I am having a problem getting the data into the format that the PHP is expecting it, the PHP is expecting the data to come in as array within an array something like, Array ( [cv_file] => Array ( [849649717] => Y [849649810] => Y ) [save] => Save CVs ) What have I tried?   Basically I would like to: Read a large amount of data from the network into an array into memory. Asynchronously write this array data, running it thru bzip2 before it hits the disk. repeat.. Is this possible? If this is possible, I know that I will have to somehow read the next pass of data into a different array as the AIO docs say that this array must not be altered before the async write is complete. I would like to background all of my writes to disk in order as the bzip2 pass is going to take much longer than the network read. Is this doable? Its 1...* relationship and association is Primary Table - Id (identity auto generated) Foreign PId column int not null. I just dont get it....Im using SqlMetal for generation, i regenerated the schema, rebuild, same. This is causing while inserting row in DevExpress XtraGrid, but i dont think this should be issue, same control with same functionality but for different tables works ok. I use grid's event for append value in a property when the entity creating. I disabled this but same again. Recreated the association. No change, exception occurs. Any ideas?

There can be any number of #foo inputs, based upon input from a previous stage of the form, and this bit is giving me trouble. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but I can't get any variation on $('#dest').val($('#source').val()); to work. Help!

• NSOperationQueue bug with dependencies

  I am using NSOperation and NSOperationQueue for performing a sequence of operations, all dependent on each other (2 on 1, 3 on 2, etc...). I set the dependency after I create the operations. I am encountering problems when the queue completes: the program crashes in the _release part of the code, apparently when the NSOperations are getting released. Note that they all get released at the end by the queue, because it is only after the very last one which depends on the second last one, which depends on etc... that they can be released. If I remove any dependency, the code runs fine. If I change waitUntilFinished: to NO, it crashes, if it is YES, it does not. I have isolated the problem to the following code which does not use any of my custom classes. NSOperation by default is a class that does absolutely nothing. Yet, this still crashes when all operations have completed. Therefore, it appears I am not using NSOperationQueue properly but can't see what is wrong. I am running on 10.9 and I have noticed that in general Maverick 10.9 is much more sensitive to these issues than 10.8. • Odd behaviour with PHP's in_array function.

  I have a function that checks multiple form items and returns either boolean(true) if the check passed or the name of the check that was run if it didn't pass. I built the function to run multiple checks at once, so it will return an array of these results (one result for each check that was run). When I run the function, I get this array result: Array ( [0] => 1 [1] => password [2] => birthday ) // print_r array(3) { [0]=> bool(true) [1]=> string(8) "password" [2]=> string(8) "birthday" } // var_dump The 'username' check passed and the 'password' and 'birthday' checks both failed. Then I am using simple in_array statements to determine which ones failed, like so: $results = $ani->e->vld->simulate("register.php", $checks); die(var_dump($results)); // Added after to see what array was being returned if (in_array("username", $results)) // do something if (in_array("password", $results)) // do something if (in_array("birthday", $results)) // do something The problem I'm having is that the 'username' line is still executing, even those 'username' is not in the array. It executes all three statements as if they were all true for some reason. Why is this? I thought maybe that the bool(true) was automatically causing the function to return true for every result without checking the rest of the array, but I couldn't find any documentation that would suggest that very odd functionality.

  Let's assume the following tables setup for a Zend Framework app. user (id) groups (id) groups_users (id, user_id, group_id, join_date) I took the Data Mapper approach to models which basically gives me: Model_User, Model_UsersMapper, Model_DbTable_Users Model_Group, Model_GroupsMapper, Model_DbTable_Groups Model_GroupUser, Model_GroupsUsersMapper, Model_DbTable_GroupsUsers (for holding the relationships which can be seen as aentities; notice the "join_date" property) I'm defining the _referenceMap in Model_DbTable_GroupsUsers: protected $_referenceMap = array ( 'User' => array ( 'columns' => array('user_id'), 'refTableClass' => 'Model_DbTable_Users', 'refColumns' => array('id') ), 'App' => array ( 'columns' => array('group_id'), 'refTableClass' => 'Model_DbTable_Groups', 'refColumns' => array('id') ) ); I'm having these design problems in mind: 1) The Model_Group only mirrors the fields in the groups table. How can I return a collection of groups a user is a member of and also the date the user joined that group for every group? If I just added the property to the domain object, then I'd have to let the group mapper know about it, wouldn't I? 2) Let's say I need to fetch the groups a user belongs to. Where should I put this logic? Model_UsersMapper or Model_GroupsUsersMapper? I also want to make use of the referencing map (dependent tables) mechanism and probably use findManyToManyRowset or findDependentRowset, something like: $result = $this->getDbTable()->find($userId); $row = $result->current(); $groups = $row->findManyToManyRowset( 'Model_DbTable_Groups', 'Model_DbTable_GroupsUsers' ); This would produce two queries when I could have just written it in a single query. I will place this in the Model_GroupsUsersMapper class. An enhancement would be to add a getGroups method to the Model_User domain object which lazily loads the groups when needed by calling the appropriate method in the data mapper, which begs for the second question. Should I allow the domain object know about the data mapper?

• What's the best way to read/write array contents from/to binary files in C#?

  I would like to read and write the contents of large ( 2GB), raw volume files (e.g. MRI scans). These files are just a sequence of e.g. 32 x 32 x 32 floats so they map well to 1D arrays. I would like to be able to read the contents of the binary volume files into 1D arrays of e.g. float or ushort (depending on the data type of the binary files) and similarly export the arrays back out to the raw volume files. What's the best way to do this with C#? Read/Write them 1 element at a time with BinaryReader/BinaryWriter? Read them piece-wise into byte arrays with FileStream.Read and then do a System.Buffer.BlockCopy between arrays (keeping in mind that I want 2GB arrays)? Write my own Reader/Writer?
