  • Violating 1st normal form, is it okay for my purpose?

    So I'm making a running log, and I have the workouts stored as entries in a table. For each workout, the user can add intervals (which consist of a time and a distance), so I have an array like this: [workout] => [description] => [comments] => ... [intervals] => [0] => [distance] => 200m [time] => 32 [1] => [distance] => 400m [time] => 65 ... I'm really tempted to throw the "intervals" array into serialize() or json_encode() and put it in an "intervals" field in my table, however this violates the principles of good database design (which, incidentally, I know hardly anything about). Is there any disadvantage to doing this? I never plan on querying my table based on the contents of "intervals". Creating a separate table just for intervals seems like a lot of unnecessary complexity, so if anyone with more experience has had a situation like this, what route did you take and how did it work out?

  • Saving/Associating slider values with a pop-up menu

    Hi, Following on from a question I posted yesterday about GUIs, I have another problem I've been working with. This question related to calculating the bending moment on a beam under different loading conditions. On the GUI I have developed so far, I have a number of sliders (which now work properly) and a pop-up menu which defines the load case. I would like to be able to select the load case from the pop-up menu and position the loads as appropriate, in order to define each load case in turn. The output that I need is an array defining the load case number (the rows) and a number of loading parameters (the itensity and position of the loads, which are controlled by the sliders). The problem I am having is that I can produce this array (of the size I need) and define the loading for one load case (by selecting the pop-up menu) using the sliders, but when I change the popup menu again, the array only keeps the loading for the load case selected by the pop-up menu. Can anyone suggest an approach I can take with (specifically to store the variables from each load case) or an example that illustrates a similar solution to the problem? The probem may be a bit vague, so please let me know if anything needs clearing up. Many Thanks, James

    Say you construct an activerecord query that will always just return a single value, how do you just address that single value instead of getting an array in return? For instance I am using an ActiveRecord query to return the SUM of a single column, it will only return this one single SUM, instead of having to parse the array is there a way to assign the value as a function return equal to that value instead of getting an array?

  • ComboBox exception caused in winforms FormClosing event

    Using c# vs2008 winforms I have an application with a bunch of child winforms. Each time a form is closed I need to store the current selected value of a combobox that is on each form to a Global application variable so that I can track it and use it in new forms. The combobox is populated on form start via a method to set its datasource to an ArrayList of items What I have found is if the combobox is populated with items in the designer, and you try to get the combobox value in the form closing event, I always get a NullReferenceException. However if the comboBox has an datasource like I DO have in my application and I try to get the combobox value in the form closing event then I would say 95% of the time I DO NOT get the NullReferenceException, but I do get it 5% of the time. That ratio can even vary depending on what computer I run the application on. for example I have 1 computer where the exception always occurs. My question is therefore what is (the best) way to get the value of the combobox, last thing before the form closes without causing the exception. I would def prefer to do it last thing before the form closes rather than track it with every selected index change event. Any advice appreciated.

    I need a regexp to match something like this, 'text' | 'text' | ... | 'text'(~text) = 'text' | 'text' | ... | 'text' I just want to divide it up into two sections, the part on the left of the equals sign and the part on the right. Any of the 'text' entries can have "=" between the ' characters though. I was thinking of trying to match an even number of 's followed by a =, but I'm not sure how to match an even number of something.. Also note I don't know how many entries on either side there could be.     Hey, I have made a function to cound the weeks in a year, and that works fine. The problem is that I need a method to get the mondaydate of the week. This is a swedish calendar. The code below works well for years that have 52 weeks, but some years(like 2009) has 53 weeks. Then I got a date from januari as the mondaydate(cant be right). So please help me to get it to work for all years. What I probably could do is check if the year has 53 weeks and then do some checks but I'd like it to go smooth without special checks.     Hello all, I've just gotten started using BDD with RSpec/Cucumber/Webrat and Rails and I've run into some frustration trying to get my view spec to pass. First of all, I am running Ruby 1.9.1p129 with Rails 2.3.2, RSpec and RSpec-Rails 1.2.6, Cucumber 0.3.11, and Webrat 0.4.4.     I have a client whose desire is to have her Wordpress blog show a MailChimp form on her home page as a gateway to a .pdf. I need the following behavior to occur when the user clicks "Submit": execute the included MailChimp's javascript file; this ensures the form was properly filled, and then performs the sign-up to the newsletter list (don't need help with this part) then show the user an informational PDF for download or viewing EDIT: The logical order was flipped from when I originally posted this. The script should execute, and only if the script gets executed properly should the PDF show to the user Note: My experience level with HTML and PHP is 3/4, and with JS I am 2/4 EDIT: (seems more like 1/4 at this point lol). If my research is correct, PHP (server-side language) would be used to do that which the client wants. Additional validation is not necessary beyond what MailChimp's script provides (it ensures that user has submitted a completed form) is not necessary in this case (the client says it's ok if the e-mail isn't valid at all).     I have multiple forms that are dynamically created with different input names and id's. The only thing unique they will have is the inner HTML of the label. Is it possible to select the input via the label inner HTML with jQuery?   • Maintain order of messages via proxies to app servers

    Hi, I am receiving messages from a 3rd party via a http post, and it is important that the order the messages hit our infrastructure is maintained through the load balancers and proxies until it hits our application server. Quick Diagram. (proxies in place due to security requirements.) [ACE load balancer] - [2 proxies] - [Application Servers] or maybe [ACE load balancer] - [2 proxies] - [ACE load balancer] - [Application Servers] My idea was that I would setup the load balancers in active-passive mode, to force all messages to use one proxy, and then both the proxies would hit a second load balancer that would be configured in active passive to hit one application server. Whilst the above is not ideal, it does give me resilience, and once the message is in my app servers, I enter a stateless world, and load balance across both nodes of my cluster. However, I am concerned that even a single proxy could send messages out of order, perhaps if 2 messages are recived very close together, message 2 might get processed faster than message 1. Is this possible? Likely? Is there a simple open source proxy (MOD_PROXY?) that can be easily configured to just pass messages through it, and to guarantee to send the messages through in the order they are received. If so which, and finally links to how I should configure it would be great. In fact any links to articles around avoiding "out of order" messages using hardware would be gratefully received.     I am a TDD newb and I would like to figure out how to test the following code. I am trying to write my tests first, but I am having trouble for creating a test that touches my DataAccessor. I can't figure out how to fake it. I've done the extend the shipment class and override the Load() method; to continue testing the object. I feel as though I end up unit testing my Mock objects/stubs and not my real objects. I thought in TDD the unit tests were supposed to hit ALL of the methods on the object; however I can never seem to test that Load() code only the overriden Mock Load My tests were write an object that contains a list of orders based off of shipment number. I have an object that loads itself from the database. public class Shipment { //member variables protected List<string> _listOfOrders = new List<string>(); protected string _id = "" //public properties public List<string> ListOrders { get{ return _listOfOrders; } } public Shipment(string id) { _id = id; Load(); } //PROBLEM METHOD // whenever I write code that needs this Shipment object, this method tries // to hit the DB and fubars my tests // the only way to get around is to have all my tests run on a fake Shipment object. protected void Load() { _listOfOrders = DataAccessor.GetOrders(_id); } } I create my fake shipment class to test the rest of the classes methods .I can't ever test the Real load method without having an actual DB connection public class FakeShipment : Shipment { protected new void Load() { _listOfOrders = new List<string>(); } } Any thoughts?   • Database design problem: intermediate table between 2 tables may end up with too many results.

    I have to design a database to handle forms. Basically, a form needs to go through (exactly) 7 people, one by one. Each person can either agree or decline a form. If one declines, the chain stops and the following people don't even get notified that there is a form. Right now I have thought of those 3 tables: FORM, PERSON, and RESPONSE inbetween. However, my first solution sounds too heavy because each form could have up to 7 responses. Here we are with the table inbetween. That means that each successful form has 7 rows in the table RESPONSE. Here we have the responding information directly inside the form. It looks ugly but at least keeps everything as singular as possible. On the bad side I can't track the response dates, but I don't think it is crucial for that matter. What is your opinion on this? I feel like both of them are wrong and I don't know how to fix that. If that matters, I'll be using Oracle 9.

    Hi, I've got an issue with Zend_Captcha always returning false when the page is submitted and the captcha's isValid() method is being called. It's driving my nuts because this as far as I am concerned should work. How can I tell if a particular pair of parens will be treated as a grouping construct or a one-element list? For example, I'm pretty sure this is a scalar and not a one-element list: (1 + 1) But what about more complex expressions? Is there an easy way to tell?

    I have a asp.net web form which will submit information to come as emails. Whenever user fill the form and click on submit button,the information user entered will be sent as email. This web form has 4 page. but the web form will not use all 4 page on all requests. if the user select a particular value in first page, the form will bypass the 3rd page and go the last 4th page(like...page1,2,4). IF it is any other values selected in the first page. form will navigate as page1,2,3,4.   • Can the behaviour of new HTML5 form types be overridden?

    I was wondering if anyone knew if it were possible to override the default behaviour of browsers that support the new HTML input types such as type="email" and type="date"? I appreciate that I could test if a browser supports an input type and provide a fallback for those browsers that don't, but what I want to know is is there any way to prevent that default behaviour from happening in browsers that do support it? For instance, if in Opera I want to use the date input type, but I don't want Opera to display the native datepicker (i.e. I want to replace it with my own custom one) is that possible? Are there any DOM events triggered like onDatePickerShow that one can hook into? I don't believe that this is possible, but if anyone knows for sure one way or the other I would love to hear from you.
