• One way sync with either Dropbox or Google drive on linux and windows

  I could not google this one. I would like to use Dropbox or Google drive only as backup, so I would like to ensure I only upload to those services and never download (unless done manually via the web interface). There would be several of us uploading stuff to one account, so we would need to ensure we don't accidentaly delete something on another guy's machine by doing some changes on our local machine. Is there a simple way to do this automatically - i.e. by running a daemon that will upload eveyuthing in a given folder but never download anything? I am on linux, so that complicates things a bit, but I am also interested in windows solutions.

• Automate new AD user's home folder creation and permission setup

  I know if we setup a base folder or a profile path in the Profile tab of an AD user, we can copy it and the folder creation and permission setup will be automated. My problem is that not all my users have a roaming profile and the home folder linking is done thru GPO. When I copy from these users, the home folder isn't created automatically and I have to create it manually and change permission and ownership on that folder, located on the fileserver. What should I do? A script may be nice but it'd have to be run everytime a new user is created and I don't think we can link a script to an AD user creation? I'd like to avoid any manual steps and keep my GPO that way. Using a W2008r2 DC on w7 client boxes. Thanks.

  My question is about using powershell scripts to install, configure, update and maintain Windows 7 Pro/Ent workstations in a 2008R2 domain, versus using GPO/ADMX/msi. Here's the situation: Because of a comedy of cumulative corporate bumpfuggery we suddenly found ourselves having to design, configure and deploy a full Windows Server 2008R2 and Windows 7 Pro/Enterprise on very short notice and delivery schedule. Of course, I'm not a windows expert by any means, and we're so understaffed that our buzzword bingo includes 'automate' and 'one-button' and 'it needs to Just Work'. (FWIW, I started with DEC, then on to solaris and cisco, then linux of various flavors with a smattering of BSD nowadays. I use Windows for email and to fill out forms). So we decided to bring in a contractor to do this for us. and they met the deadline. The system is up and mostly usable, and this is good. We would not have been able to do this. But it's the 'mostly' part that is proving to be the PIMA now, and I'm having to learn Microsoft stuff anyway until/if we can get a new contract with these guys for ongoing operations. Here's my question. The contractor used powershell almost exclusively for deployment, configuration and updating. My intensive reading over the last week leads me to think that the generally accepted practices for deployment, configuration and updating microsoft stuff uses elements of GPOs and ADMX templates, along with maybe some third party stuff like PolicyPak. Are there solid reasons that I've not found yet that powershell scripts would be preferred over the GPO methods? I'm going to discuss this with the contractor lead when he gets back from his vacation, and he'll be straight with me (nor do I think they set us up). But I can also see this might be a religious issue, so I would still like some background on this. Thoughts? or weblinks? Thanks!

  A Windows service has 4 different startup types that can be configured: Automatic, Automatic (delayed), Manual and Disabled. I have a service running on a combination of Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 Desktops that I need to set as 'Automatic (delayed)' using a GPO setting, but from what I can see in the GPO editor, the delayed option is missing: Have I missed something obvious, or is this a rather basic omission from Microsoft?

• How to filter RSOP to show only modified policies?

  Is it possible to view only those elements of GPO that are actually modified/specified? For example, when looking at RSOP for an OU, I have loads of options which are mostly not specified - can I automatically filter it to show only e.g. that it doesn't allow to use control panel or install software, instead of looking through all options? I am using Win2003 and I have only the default tools. Thanks in advance!

• Domain controller policies having administrative issues with program installations

  I have an issue with our domain and policies where a user needs administrative rights to install a program and someone provides the credentials for the 'run as admin' or 'run as other user' it will always show an error: Cannot find specified file on the drive. So we cannot install programs for our employees. How I fix it is I add the user to administrators, force a policy update, have them reboot, run as administrator and install it that way. Then remove them after and update the policy. Another way was to right click the install file (.exe/.msi) and add the user and administrator as an owner with full control. Only works when we have the installation file. I have no idea how to fix this and I can't find a relevant thread or QA about this problem. I can only find users having issues on their home computers not on a domain. Any help and threads to read would be great!

• Folder redirect policy does not apply to one user

  I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2, my station runs Windows 7. while defining folder redirection policy (and others) I find that the redirection does not apply (or appear) in rsop.msc checkout. First thing I've checked is restrictions on the folders where the My Documents folder will be redirected to, I have set full rights for my user on those folders (on the server), and yet I get no actual result. Eventually I decided to add my specific user to the scope under the Folder Redirection policy, and well - still nothing... Would love some clue about what can be wrong.

  I'm a developer of internal software in our company, I've gotten used to UAC in Win7, I prefer to run with in enabled so that our software works correctly with it enabled. Sysadmins have recently pushed out GPO that turns it off every time we log-in. (So I turn it back on every time I log in.) I can imagine some people are annoyed by it and turn it off, but is that really a good company-wide decision? anyone annoyed by it (local admins) would already have permission to turn it of themselves.. right? On the other hand we don't have to worry creating UAC friendly software if no workstations or servers have it enabled. Is there a good reason for doing this? Other than reducing help-desk calls from recent XP users? I can't see the upside of this decision, help me understand.

• Customising Windows 8 Start Screen Tiles

  We are looking for an effective way to manage the start screen in Windows 8. So far using WSIM we can add certain start tiles by using the OOBE System - shell setup - SquareTiles and WideTiles properties. However this only seems to work for square tiles and not wide tiles, if anyone has any insight on this it would eb appreciated. However the main question is has anyone managed to modify this screen using a GPO, we can add application shortcuts to the Start menu list on the All Apps page using a create shortcut to all users start menu policy. However as we occasionally deploy apps throughout the year in line with the courses requirements we would want to be able to put a shortcut on the home screen. Is it possible?

  Hello, Is there any mail server that has a feature to download (POP3) emails from another mail server like Google Apps (Gmail for your own domain), store it and then allow to users to download (POP3/IMAP) emails to their own mail client like Outlook/Live Mail? • Batch file installing executable only gives SYSTEM permissions

  So, I have a couple of batch files that install some executables and they work, but when the executables setup shortcuts on the desktop only SYSTEM has access to them. Is there a way I can prevent that or make it so it adds Domain Users access or something like that. • Issue with Administratively Assigned Offline Files

  I need to use Administratively Assigned Offline files in conjunction with folder redirection, but user home folders live on 26 different shares. Do I just need to add 52 file paths similar to: \\server\shareA\%username%\Desktop \\server\shareA\%username%\My Documents \\server\shareB\%username%\Desktop \\server\shareB\%username%\My Documents ... and so on? Or do I need to create 26 GPOs, one for each share; or is there an easier way to do it? Edit: The solution provided by @berniewhite in the comments of using %homeshare% has resolved the issue and Administratively Assigned Offline Files is now working well.

In 2008, OpenForum Europe, a not-for-profit champion of openness through open standards, hosted one of the most cited speeches by Neelie Kroes, then Commissioner of Competition. Her forward-looking speech on openness and interoperability as a way to improve the competitiveness of ICT markets set the EU on a path to eradicate lock-in forever. On the two-year anniversary of that event, Vice President Kroes, now the first-ever Commissioner of the Digital Agenda, is set to outline her plans for delivering on that vision. Much excitement surrounds open standards, given that Kroes is a staunch believer. The EU's Digital Agenda promises IT standardization reform in Europe and vows to recognize global standards development organizations (fora/consortia) by 2010. However, she avoided the term "open standards" in her new strategy. Markets are, of course, asking why she is keeping her cards tight on this crucial issue.   I have a table with col1 id int, col2 as varchar (comma separated values) and column 3 for assigning group to them. Table looks like col1 col2 group .............................. 1 2,3,4 2 5,6 3 1,2,5 4 7,8 5 11,3 6 22,8 This is only the sample of real data, now I have to assign a group no to them in such a way that output looks like col1 col2 group .............................. 1 2,3,4 1 2 5,6 1 3 1,2,5 1 4 7,8 2 5 11,3 1 6 22,8 2 The logic for assigning group no is that every similar comma separated value of string in col2 have to be same group no as every where in col2 where '2' is there it has to be same group no but the complication is that 2,3,4 are together so they all three int value if found in any where in col2 will be assigned same group. The major part is 2,3,4 and 1,2,5 both in col2 have 2 so all int 1,2,3,4,5 have to assign same group no. Tried store procedure with match against on col2 but not getting desired result Most imp (I can't use normalization, because I can't afford to make new table from my original table which have millions of records), even normalization is not helpful in my context.   I am trying to formulate a work-around for the lack of a "checkbox group" in ASP.NET MVC. The typical way to implement this is to have check boxes of the same name, each with the value it represents. <input type="checkbox" name="n" value=1 /> <input type="checkbox" name="n" value=2 /> <input type="checkbox" name="n" value=3 /> When submitted, it will comma delimit all values to the request item "n".. so Request["n"] == "1,2,3" if all three are checked when submitted. The problem I have is that when validation fails, the check boxes are not restored to their checked state. Any suggestions. • Problem connecting to Hsqldb via Hibernate when running a Eclipse GWT project.

  Hi, I'm trying to run a simple GWT project where I'm trying to do a simple persitence via hibernate to a HSQLDB database. The database I'm using I have been using for at least 2 years with several osgi applications without any problems. So all I done is reused the same configuration and added a simple object mapping file. The problem I have is that I get a socket creation error when ever I try to persist the object with in GWT jetty. I now the database is up and running, I can telnet to it, run OSGI projects that uses the same config with out problems.
