  • Categorising a large mysql result with php while?

    - by Ryan
    I'm using the following to grab my large result set from a mysql db: $discresult = 'SELECT t.id, t.subject, t.topicimage, t.topictype, c.user_id, c.disc_id FROM topics AS t LEFT JOIN collections AS c ON t.id=c.disc_id WHERE c.user_id='.$user_id; $userdiscs = $db->query($discresult) or error('Error.', __FILE__, __LINE__, $db->error()); This returns a list of all items that the user owns. I'm then needing to categorise these items based on the value of the "topictype" column, which Im currently doing by using: <h2>Category 1</h2> <?php while ($cur_img = mysql_fetch_array($userdiscs)) { if ($cur_img['topictype']=="cat-1") { if ($cur_img['topicimage']!="") { echo "<div><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\"><img src=\"".$cur_img['topicimage']."\" style=\"width:60px; height: 60px\" /></a><br /><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\">".$cur_img['subject']."</a></div>"; } else { echo "<div><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\"><img src=\"img/no-disc-art.jpg\" style=\"width:60px; height: 60px\" /></a><br /><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\">".$cur_img['subject']."</a></div>"; } } } mysql_data_seek($userdiscs, 0); ?> <h2>Category 2</h2> <?php while ($cur_img = mysql_fetch_array($userdiscs)) { if ($cur_img['topictype']=="cat-2") { if ($cur_img['topicimage']!="") { echo "<div><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\"><img src=\"".$cur_img['topicimage']."\" style=\"width:60px; height: 60px\" /></a><br /><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\">".$cur_img['subject']."</a></div>"; } else { echo "<div><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\"><img src=\"img/no-disc-art.jpg\" style=\"width:60px; height: 60px\" /></a><br /><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\">".$cur_img['subject']."</a></div>"; } } } mysql_data_seek($userdiscs, 0); ?> This works fine when I rinse and repeat the code, but as the site grows I expect I'll run into problems as the number of "topictype" options increases (expecting around 30 categories). I dont want to have to make seperate queries for each categorised group of discs either, as Id eventually have 30 queries being run as categories increase, so hoping to hear some suggestions or alternative approaches :) Thanks

  • Connecting Android device to multiple Bluetooth serial embedded peers

    - by TacB0sS
    I'm trying to find a solution for this setup: I have a single Android device, which I would like to connect to multiple serial embedded devices... And here is the thing, using the "Normal" way to retrieve the Bluetooth socket, doesn't work on all devices, and while it does, I can connect to multiple devices, and send and receive data to and from multiple devices. public final synchronized void connect() throws ConnectionException { if (socket != null) throw new IllegalStateException("Error socket is not null!!"); connecting = true; lastException = null; lastPacket = null; lastHeartBeatReceivedAt = 0; log.setLength(0); try { socket = fetchBT_Socket_Normal(); connectToSocket(socket); listenForIncomingSPP_Packets(); connecting = false; return; } catch (Exception e) { socket = null; logError(e); } try { socket = fetchBT_Socket_Workaround(); connectToSocket(socket); listenForIncomingSPP_Packets(); connecting = false; return; } catch (Exception e) { socket = null; logError(e); } connecting = false; if (socket == null) throw new ConnectionException("Error creating RFcomm socket for" + this); } private BluetoothSocket fetchBT_Socket_Normal() throws Exception { /* The getType() is a hex 0xXXXX value agreed between peers --- this is the key (in my case) to multiple connections in the "Normal" way */ String uuid = getType() + "1101-0000-1000-8000-00805F9B34FB"; try { logDebug("Fetching BT RFcomm Socket standard for UUID: " + uuid + "..."); socket = btDevice.createRfcommSocketToServiceRecord(UUID.fromString(uuid)); return socket; } catch (Exception e) { logError(e); throw e; } } private BluetoothSocket fetchBT_Socket_Workaround() throws Exception { Method m; int connectionIndex = 1; try { logDebug("Fetching BT RFcomm Socket workaround index " + connectionIndex + "..."); m = btDevice.getClass().getMethod("createRfcommSocket", new Class[]{int.class}); socket = (BluetoothSocket) m.invoke(btDevice, connectionIndex); return socket; } catch (Exception e1) { logError(e1); throw e1; } } private void connectToSocket(BluetoothSocket socket) throws ConnectionException { try { socket.connect(); } catch (IOException e) { try { socket.close(); } catch (IOException e1) { logError("Error while closing socket", e1); } finally { socket = null; } throw new ConnectionException("Error connecting to socket with" + this, e); } } And here is the thing, while on phones which the "Normal" way doesn't work, the "Workaround" way provides a solution for a single connection. I've searched far and wide, but came up with zip. The problem with the workaround is mentioned in the last link, both connection uses the same port, which in my case, causes a block, where both of the embedded devices can actually send data, that is not been processed on the Android, while both embedded devices can receive data sent from the Android. Did anyone handle this before? There is a bit more reference here, UPDATE: Following this (that I posted earlier) I wanted to give the mPort a chance, and perhaps to see other port indices, and how other devices manage them, and I found out the the fields in the BluetoothSocket object are different while it is the same class FQN in both cases: Detils from an HTC Vivid 2.3.4, uses the "workaround" Technic: The Socket class type is: [android.bluetooth.BluetoothSocket] mSocket BluetoothSocket (id=830008629928) EADDRINUSE 98 EBADFD 77 MAX_RFCOMM_CHANNEL 30 TAG "BluetoothSocket" (id=830002722432) TYPE_L2CAP 3 TYPE_RFCOMM 1 TYPE_SCO 2 mAddress "64:9C:8E:DC:56:9A" (id=830008516328) mAuth true mClosed false mClosing AtomicBoolean (id=830007851600) mDevice BluetoothDevice (id=830007854256) mEncrypt true mInputStream BluetoothInputStream (id=830008688856) mLock ReentrantReadWriteLock (id=830008629992) mOutputStream BluetoothOutputStream (id=830008430536) **mPort 1** mSdp null mSocketData 3923880 mType 1 Detils from an LG-P925 2.2.2, uses the "normal" Technic: The Socket class type is: [android.bluetooth.BluetoothSocket] mSocket BluetoothSocket (id=830105532880) EADDRINUSE 98 EBADFD 77 MAX_RFCOMM_CHANNEL 30 TAG "BluetoothSocket" (id=830002668088) TYPE_L2CAP 3 TYPE_RFCOMM 1 TYPE_SCO 2 mAccepted false mAddress "64:9C:8E:B9:3F:77" (id=830105544600) mAuth true mClosed false mConnected ConditionVariable (id=830105533144) mDevice BluetoothDevice (id=830105349488) mEncrypt true mInputStream BluetoothInputStream (id=830105532952) mLock ReentrantReadWriteLock (id=830105532984) mOutputStream BluetoothOutputStream (id=830105532968) mPortName "" (id=830002606256) mSocketData 0 mSppPort BluetoothSppPort (id=830105533160) mType 1 mUuid ParcelUuid (id=830105714176) Anyone have some insight...

  • How do I get jqGrid to work using ASP.NET + JSON on the backend?

    - by briandus
    Hi friends, ok, I'm back. I totally simplified my problem to just three simple fields and I'm still stuck on the same line using the addJSONData method. I've been stuck on this for days and no matter how I rework the ajax call, the json string, blah blah blah...I can NOT get this to work! I can't even get it to work as a function when adding one row of data manually. Can anyone PLEASE post a working sample of jqGrid that works with ASP.NET and JSON? Would you please include 2-3 fields (string, integer and date preferably?) I would be happy to see a working sample of jqGrid and just the manual addition of a JSON object using the addJSONData method. Thanks SO MUCH!! If I ever get this working, I will post a full code sample for all the other posting for help from ASP.NET, JSON users stuck on this as well. Again. THANKS!! tbl.addJSONData(objGridData); //err: tbl.addJSONData is not a function!! Here is what Firebug is showing when I receive this message: • objGridData Object total=1 page=1 records=5 rows=[5] ? • Session state provider and global.asax not interacting properly?

    - by yodaj007
    I'm experimenting with creating a crude, proof-of-concept session state store provider in ASP.Net. But I've got a problem and I'm not sure what to do about it. The website works properly when using the InProc provider. The Session_Start in global.asax is called on session creation as it should. But not if I implement my own provider. The Session_Start method from global.asax isn't being called at all if a new session is being created (that is, I delete the session state file). Am I missing something important here? public class TestSessionProvider : SessionStateStoreProviderBase { private const string ROOT = "c:\\projects\\sessions\\"; private const int TIMEOUT_MINUTES = 30; public string ApplicationName { get { return HostingEnvironment.ApplicationVirtualPath; } } private string GetFilename(string id) { string filename = String.Format("{0}_{1}.session", ApplicationName, id); char[] invalids = Path.GetInvalidPathChars(); for (int i = 0; i < invalids.Length; i++) { filename = filename.Replace(invalids[i], '_'); } return Path.Combine(ROOT, Path.GetFileName(filename)); } public override void Initialize(string name, NameValueCollection config) { if (config == null) throw new ArgumentNullException("config"); if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(name)) name = "Sporkalicious"; base.Initialize(name, config); } public override SessionStateStoreData CreateNewStoreData(HttpContext context, int timeout) { SessionStateItemCollection items = new SessionStateItemCollection(); HttpStaticObjectsCollection objects = SessionStateUtility.GetSessionStaticObjects(context); return new SessionStateStoreData(items, objects, TIMEOUT_MINUTES); } /// <summary> /// The CreateUninitializedItem method is used with cookieless sessions when the regenerateExpiredSessionId /// attribute is set to true, which causes SessionStateModule to generate a new SessionID value when an /// expired session ID is encountered. /// </summary> /// <param name="context"></param> /// <param name="id"></param> /// <param name="timeout"></param> public override void CreateUninitializedItem(HttpContext context, string id, int timeout) { FileStream fs = File.Open(GetFilename(id), FileMode.CreateNew, FileAccess.Write, FileShare.None); BinaryWriter writer = new BinaryWriter(fs); SessionStateItemCollection coll = new SessionStateItemCollection(); coll.Serialize(writer); fs.Flush(); fs.Close(); } public override SessionStateStoreData GetItem(HttpContext context, string id, out bool locked, out TimeSpan lockAge, out object lockId, out SessionStateActions actions) { return GetItemExclusive(context, id, out locked, out lockAge, out lockId, out actions); } public override SessionStateStoreData GetItemExclusive(HttpContext context, string id, out bool locked, out TimeSpan lockAge, out object lockId, out SessionStateActions actions) { locked = false; lockAge = TimeSpan.FromDays(1); lockId = 0; actions = SessionStateActions.None; if (!File.Exists(GetFilename(id))) { return null; } FileStream fs = File.Open(GetFilename(id), FileMode.Open, FileAccess.ReadWrite, FileShare.Read); BinaryReader reader = new BinaryReader(fs); SessionStateItemCollection coll = SessionStateItemCollection.Deserialize(reader); fs.Close(); return new SessionStateStoreData(coll, new HttpStaticObjectsCollection(), TIMEOUT_MINUTES); } public override void ReleaseItemExclusive(HttpContext context, string id, object lockId) { } public override void RemoveItem(HttpContext context, string id, object lockId, SessionStateStoreData item) { File.Delete(GetFilename(id)); } public override void ResetItemTimeout(HttpContext context, string id) { } public override void SetAndReleaseItemExclusive(HttpContext context, string id, SessionStateStoreData item, object lockId, bool newItem) { if (!File.Exists(GetFilename(id))) { CreateUninitializedItem(context, id, 10); } FileStream fs = File.Open(GetFilename(id), FileMode.Truncate, FileAccess.Write, FileShare.None); BinaryWriter writer = new BinaryWriter(fs); SessionStateItemCollection coll = (SessionStateItemCollection)item.Items; coll.Serialize(writer); fs.Flush(); fs.Close(); } public override bool SetItemExpireCallback(SessionStateItemExpireCallback expireCallback) { return false; } public override void InitializeRequest(HttpContext context){} public override void EndRequest(HttpContext context){} public override void Dispose(){} }

  • listview and datalist not updating,inserting

    Data entered in textboxes is not getting updated in database. In debug mode I see that text1 and text2 in ItemUpdating event contain the same values as they had before calling ItemUpdating. Should I use e.NewValues property? If so, how to use it? Thanks in advance for any help.

  • RadioGroup onCheckedChanged function won't fire

    - by user1758088
    First time/long time. My app keeps track of restaurant servers' shift sales to help them budget. In the activity that displays past shifts, I've created a RadioGroup under the ListView so the server can choose lunch, dinner, or both. I've implemented RadioGroup.onCheckedChangeListener, but onCheckChanged never gets called. I also tried an anonymous inner class as listener, same result. I tried to copy/modify code from this answer: http://stackoverflow.com/a/9595528 ...but when I added the @Override to the callback function, the Eclipse compiler gave me an error (not warning) that the method must override a superclass, and the quick fix was to remove the override. I'm pretty sure the signatures are correct, as they were made with Eclipse's autocomplete and implement methods facilities. I then followed instructions to move my java compiler from 1.5 to 1.6, and none of the above listed behavior seemed to change. Here's the code I thing is relavent: public class DataActivity extends ListActivity implements OnCheckedChangeListener{ RadioButton rbBoth; RadioButton rbDinnerOnly; RadioButton rbLunchOnly; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState){ super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.database); ... final RadioGroup rgGroup = (RadioGroup)findViewById(R.id.DataRadioGroup); rbBoth = (RadioButton)findViewById(R.id.RadioBoth); rbDinnerOnly = (RadioButton)findViewById(R.id.RadioDinnerOnly); rbLunchOnly = (RadioButton)findViewById(R.id.RadioLunchOnly); rgGroup.setOnCheckedChangeListener(this); populateAllShifts(); } ... public void onCheckedChanged(RadioGroup group, int checkedId) { rbLunchOnly.setText("Click!"); Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "Lunch Only", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); if(group.getCheckedRadioButtonId() == R.id.RadioBoth){ populateAllShifts(); return; } if(group.getCheckedRadioButtonId() == R.id.RadioLunchOnly){ populatLunchShifts(); return; } if(group.getCheckedRadioButtonId() == R.id.RadioDinnerOnly){ populateDinnerShifts(); return; } } There is a ListView in this class with a custom adapter, but if my understanding and my XML are correct, the RadioGroup should be outside of the list: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/llDataLayout" android:weightSum="5" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:orientation="vertical"> <ListView android:layout_weight="4" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:id="@android:id/list" android:layout_height="wrap_content"></ListView> <RadioGroup android:layout_weight="1" android:id="@+id/DataRadioGroup" android:orientation="horizontal" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="fill_parent"> <RadioButton android:text="Lunch and Dinner" android:textSize="10dp" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="@+id/RadioBoth"/> <RadioButton android:text="Dinner Only" android:textSize="10dp" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="@+id/RadioDinnerOnly"/> <RadioButton android:text="Lunch Only" android:textSize="10dp" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="@+id/RadioLunchOnly"/> </RadioGroup> </LinearLayout> Any ideas out there?

    I am building a simple app which stores some contacts and retrieves contacts in android phone device. I have created my own database and a table and inserting the values to the table in phone. My phone is not rooted. So I cannot access the files, but I see that values are stored in the table. And tested on a emulator also. Till here it is fine. Display all the contacts in a list by fetching data from table. This is also fine. But the problem is When I am trying to delete the record, it shows the table name is null in the logcat(not an exception), and the data is not deleted. But in emulator the data is getting deleted from table. I am not able to achieve this through phone. This is my code for deleting, public boolean onContextItemSelected(MenuItem item) { super.onContextItemSelected(item); AdapterView.AdapterContextMenuInfo info = (AdapterView.AdapterContextMenuInfo) item .getMenuInfo(); int menuItemIndex = item.getItemId(); String[] menuItems = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.menu); String menuItemName = menuItems[menuItemIndex]; String listItemName = Customers[info.position]; if (item.getTitle().toString().equalsIgnoreCase("Delete")) { Toast.makeText( context, "Selected List item is: " + listItemName + "MenuItem is: " + menuItemName, Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); DB = context.openOrCreateDatabase("CustomerDetails.db", MODE_PRIVATE, null); try { int pos = info.position; pos = pos + 1; Log.d("", "customers[pos]: " + Customers[info.position]); Cursor c = DB .rawQuery( "Select customer_id,first_name,last_name from CustomerInfo", null); int rowCount = c.getCount(); DB.delete(Table_name, "customer_id" + "=" + String.valueOf(pos), null); DB.close(); Log.d("", "" + String.valueOf(pos)); Toast.makeText(context, "Deleted Customer", Toast.LENGTH_LONG) .show(); // Customers[info.position]=null; getCustomers(); } catch (Exception e) { Toast.makeText(context, "Delete unsuccessfull", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); } } this is my logcat, 07-02 10:12:42.976: D/Cursor(1560): Database path: CustomerDetails.db 07-02 10:12:42.976: D/Cursor(1560): Table name : null 07-02 10:12:42.984: D/Cursor(1560): Database path: CustomerDetails.db 07-02 10:12:42.984: D/Cursor(1560): Table name : null Don't know the reason why data is not being deleted. Data exists in the table. This is the specification I have given for creating the table public static String customer_id="customer_id"; public static String site_id="site_id"; public static String last_name="last_name"; public static String first_name="first_name"; public static String phone_number="phone_number"; public static String address="address"; public static String city="city"; public static String state="state"; public static String zip="zip"; public static String email_address="email_address"; public static String custlat="custlat"; public static String custlng="custlng"; public static String Table_name="CustomerInfo"; final SQLiteDatabase DB = context.openOrCreateDatabase( "CustomerDetails.db", MODE_PRIVATE, null); final String CREATE_TABLE = "create table if not exists " + Table_name + " (" + customer_id + " integer primary key autoincrement, " + first_name + " text not null, " + last_name + " text not null, " + phone_number+ " integer not null, " + address+ " text not null, " + city+ " text not null, " + state+ " text not null, " + zip+ " integer not null, " + email_address+ " text not null, " + custlat+ " double, " + custlng+ " double " +" );"; DB.execSQL(CREATE_TABLE); DB.close(); Please correct my code. I am struggling from two days. Any help is appreciated!!

  • listview not updating,inserting

    - by raging_boner
    Data entered in textboxes is not getting updated in database. In debug mode I see that textbox1 and textbox2 in ItemUpdating event contain the same values as they had before calling ItemUpdating. Here's my listview control: <asp:ListView ID="ListView1" runat="server" onitemediting="ListView1_ItemEditing" onitemupdating="ListView1_ItemUpdating" oniteminserting="ListView1_ItemInserting"> //LayoutTemplate removed <ItemTemplate> <td align="center" valign="top"> <asp:Label ID="Label2" runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("id")%>'></asp:Label><br /> <asp:Label ID="Label3" runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("text1")%>'></asp:Label> </td> <td> <asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton2" CommandName="Edit" runat="server">Edit</asp:LinkButton> <asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton4" CommandName="Delete" runat="server">Delete</asp:LinkButton> </td> </ItemTemplate> <EditItemTemplate> <td align="center" valign="top"> <asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("id")%>'></asp:Label> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox1" runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("text1")%>' TextMode="MultiLine" /> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox2" runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("text2")%>' Height="100" TextMode="MultiLine" /> <asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton1" CommandName="Update" CommandArgument='<%# Eval("id")%>' runat="server">Update</asp:LinkButton> <asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton5" CommandName="Cancel" runat="server">Cancel</asp:LinkButton> </td> </EditItemTemplate> <InsertItemTemplate> <td align="center" valign="top"> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox3" runat="server" TextMode="MultiLine" Height="100"></asp:TextBox> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox4" runat="server" Height="100" TextMode="MultiLine"></asp:TextBox><br/> <asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton3" runat="server">Insert</asp:LinkButton> </td> </InsertItemTemplate> </asp:ListView> Codebehind file: protected void ListView1_ItemEditing(object sender, ListViewEditEventArgs e) { ListView1.EditIndex = e.NewEditIndex; BindList(); } protected void ListView1_ItemUpdating(object sender, ListViewUpdateEventArgs e) { ListViewItem myItem = ListView1.Items[ListView1.EditIndex]; Label id = (Label)myItem.FindControl("Label1"); int dbid = int.Parse(id.Text); TextBox text1 = (TextBox)myItem.FindControl("Textbox1"); TextBox text2 = (TextBox)myItem.FindControl("Textbox2"); //tried to work withNewValues below, but they don't work, "null reference" error is being thrown //text1.Text = e.NewValues["text1"].ToString(); //text2.Text = e.NewValues["text2"].ToString(); //odbc connection routine removed. //i know that there should be odbc parameteres: comm = new OdbcCommand("UPDATE table SET text1 = '" + text1.Text + "', text2 = '" + text2.Text + "' WHERE id = '" + dbid + "'", connection); comm.ExecuteNonQuery(); conn.Close(); ListView1.EditIndex = -1; //here I databind ListView1 } What's wrong with updating of text1.Text, text2.Text in ItemUpdating event? Should I use e.NewValues property? If so, how to use it? Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Translating with Google Translate without API and C# Code

    - by Rick Strahl
    Some time back I created a data base driven ASP.NET Resource Provider along with some tools that make it easy to edit ASP.NET resources interactively in a Web application. One of the small helper features of the interactive resource admin tool is the ability to do simple translations using both Google Translate and Babelfish. Here's what this looks like in the resource administration form: When a resource is displayed, the user can click a Translate button and it will show the current resource text and then lets you set the source and target languages to translate. The Go button fires the translation for both Google and Babelfish and displays them - pressing use then changes the language of the resource to the target language and sets the resource value to the newly translated value. It's a nice and quick way to get a quick translation going. Ch… Ch… Changes Originally, both implementations basically did some screen scraping of the interactive Web sites and retrieved translated text out of result HTML. Screen scraping is always kind of an iffy proposition as content can be changed easily, but surprisingly that code worked for many years without fail. Recently however, Google at least changed their input pages to use AJAX callbacks and the page updates no longer worked the same way. End result: The Google translate code was broken. Now, Google does have an official API that you can access, but the API is being deprecated and you actually need to have an API key. Since I have public samples that people can download the API key is an issue if I want people to have the samples work out of the box - the only way I could even do this is by sharing my API key (not allowed).   However, after a bit of spelunking and playing around with the public site however I found that Google's interactive translate page actually makes callbacks using plain public access without an API key. By intercepting some of those AJAX calls and calling them directly from code I was able to get translation back up and working with minimal fuss, by parsing out the JSON these AJAX calls return. I don't think this particular Warning: This is hacky code, but after a fair bit of testing I found this to work very well with all sorts of languages and accented and escaped text etc. as long as you stick to small blocks of translated text. I thought I'd share it in case anybody else had been relying on a screen scraping mechanism like I did and needed a non-API based replacement. Here's the code: /// <summary> /// Translates a string into another language using Google's translate API JSON calls. /// <seealso>Class TranslationServices</seealso> /// </summary> /// <param name="Text">Text to translate. Should be a single word or sentence.</param> /// <param name="FromCulture"> /// Two letter culture (en of en-us, fr of fr-ca, de of de-ch) /// </param> /// <param name="ToCulture"> /// Two letter culture (as for FromCulture) /// </param> public string TranslateGoogle(string text, string fromCulture, string toCulture) { fromCulture = fromCulture.ToLower(); toCulture = toCulture.ToLower(); // normalize the culture in case something like en-us was passed // retrieve only en since Google doesn't support sub-locales string[] tokens = fromCulture.Split('-'); if (tokens.Length > 1) fromCulture = tokens[0]; // normalize ToCulture tokens = toCulture.Split('-'); if (tokens.Length > 1) toCulture = tokens[0]; string url = string.Format(@"http://translate.google.com/translate_a/t?client=j&text={0}&hl=en&sl={1}&tl={2}", HttpUtility.UrlEncode(text),fromCulture,toCulture); // Retrieve Translation with HTTP GET call string html = null; try { WebClient web = new WebClient(); // MUST add a known browser user agent or else response encoding doen't return UTF-8 (WTF Google?) web.Headers.Add(HttpRequestHeader.UserAgent, "Mozilla/5.0"); web.Headers.Add(HttpRequestHeader.AcceptCharset, "UTF-8"); // Make sure we have response encoding to UTF-8 web.Encoding = Encoding.UTF8; html = web.DownloadString(url); } catch (Exception ex) { this.ErrorMessage = Westwind.Globalization.Resources.Resources.ConnectionFailed + ": " + ex.GetBaseException().Message; return null; } // Extract out trans":"...[Extracted]...","from the JSON string string result = Regex.Match(html, "trans\":(\".*?\"),\"", RegexOptions.IgnoreCase).Groups[1].Value; if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(result)) { this.ErrorMessage = Westwind.Globalization.Resources.Resources.InvalidSearchResult; return null; } //return WebUtils.DecodeJsString(result); // Result is a JavaScript string so we need to deserialize it properly JavaScriptSerializer ser = new JavaScriptSerializer(); return ser.Deserialize(result, typeof(string)) as string; } To use the code is straightforward enough - simply provide a string to translate and a pair of two letter source and target languages: string result = service.TranslateGoogle("Life is great and one is spoiled when it goes on and on and on", "en", "de"); TestContext.WriteLine(result); How it works The code to translate is fairly straightforward. It basically uses the URL I snagged from the Google Translate Web Page slightly changed to return a JSON result (&client=j) instead of the funky nested PHP style JSON array that the default returns. The JSON result returned looks like this: {"sentences":[{"trans":"Das Leben ist großartig und man wird verwöhnt, wenn es weiter und weiter und weiter geht","orig":"Life is great and one is spoiled when it goes on and on and on","translit":"","src_translit":""}],"src":"en","server_time":24} I use WebClient to make an HTTP GET call to retrieve the JSON data and strip out part of the full JSON response that contains the actual translated text. Since this is a JSON response I need to deserialize the JSON string in case it's encoded (for upper/lower ASCII chars or quotes etc.). Couple of odd things to note in this code: First note that a valid user agent string must be passed (or at least one starting with a common browser identification - I use Mozilla/5.0). Without this Google doesn't encode the result with UTF-8, but instead uses a ISO encoding that .NET can't easily decode. Google seems to ignore the character set header and use the user agent instead which is - odd to say the least. The other is that the code returns a full JSON response. Rather than use the full response and decode it into a custom type that matches Google's result object, I just strip out the translated text. Yeah I know that's hacky but avoids an extra type and firing up the JavaScript deserializer. My internal version uses a small DecodeJsString() method to decode Javascript without the overhead of a full JSON parser. It's obviously not rocket science but as mentioned above what's nice about it is that it works without an Google API key. I can't vouch on how many translates you can do before there are cut offs but in my limited testing running a few stress tests on a Web server under load I didn't run into any problems. Limitations There are some restrictions with this: It only works on single words or single sentences - multiple sentences (delimited by .) are cut off at the ".". There is also a length limitation which appears to happen at around 220 characters or so. While that may not sound  like much for typical word or phrase translations this this is plenty of length. Use with a grain of salt - Google seems to be trying to limit their exposure to usage of the Translate APIs so this code might break in the future, but for now at least it works. FWIW, I also found that Google's translation is not as good as Babelfish, especially for contextual content like sentences. Google is faster, but Babelfish tends to give better translations. This is why in my translation tool I show both Google and Babelfish values retrieved. You can check out the code for this in the West Wind West Wind Web Toolkit's TranslationService.cs file which contains both the Google and Babelfish translation code pieces. Ironically the Babelfish code has been working forever using screen scraping and continues to work just fine today. I think it's a good idea to have multiple translation providers in case one is down or changes its format, hence the dual display in my translation form above. I hope this has been helpful to some of you - I've actually had many small uses for this code in a number of applications and it's sweet to have a simple routine that performs these operations for me easily. • Using a "white list" for extracting terms for Text Mining, Part 2

    - by [email protected]
    In my last post, we set the groundwork for extracting specific tokens from a white list using a CTXRULE index. In this post, we will populate a table with the extracted tokens and produce a case table suitable for clustering with Oracle Data Mining. Our corpus of documents will be stored in a database table that is defined as create table documents(id NUMBER, text VARCHAR2(4000)); However, any suitable Oracle Text-accepted data type can be used for the text. We then create a table to contain the extracted tokens. The id column contains the unique identifier (or case id) of the document. The token column contains the extracted token. Note that a given document many have many tokens, so there will be one row per token for a given document. create table extracted_tokens (id NUMBER, token VARCHAR2(4000)); The next step is to iterate over the documents and extract the matching tokens using the index and insert them into our token table. We use the MATCHES function for matching the query_string from my_thesaurus_rules with the text. DECLARE     cursor c2 is       select id, text       from documents; BEGIN     for r_c2 in c2 loop        insert into extracted_tokens          select r_c2.id id, main_term token          from my_thesaurus_rules          where matches(query_string,                        r_c2.text)>0;     end loop; END; Now that we have the tokens, we can compute the term frequency - inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) for each token of each document. create table extracted_tokens_tfidf as   with num_docs as (select count(distinct id) doc_cnt                     from extracted_tokens),        tf       as (select a.id, a.token,                            a.token_cnt/b.num_tokens token_freq                     from                        (select id, token, count(*) token_cnt                        from extracted_tokens                        group by id, token) a,                       (select id, count(*) num_tokens                        from extracted_tokens                        group by id) b                     where a.id=b.id),        doc_freq as (select token, count(*) overall_token_cnt                     from extracted_tokens                     group by token)   select tf.id, tf.token,          token_freq * ln(doc_cnt/df.overall_token_cnt) tf_idf   from num_docs,        tf,        doc_freq df   where df.token=tf.token; From the WITH clause, the num_docs query simply counts the number of documents in the corpus. The tf query computes the term (token) frequency by computing the number of times each token appears in a document and divides that by the number of tokens found in the document. The doc_req query counts the number of times the token appears overall in the corpus. In the SELECT clause, we compute the tf_idf. Next, we create the nested table required to produce one record per case, where a case corresponds to an individual document. Here, we COLLECT all the tokens for a given document into the nested column extracted_tokens_tfidf_1. CREATE TABLE extracted_tokens_tfidf_nt              NESTED TABLE extracted_tokens_tfidf_1                  STORE AS extracted_tokens_tfidf_tab AS              select id,                     cast(collect(DM_NESTED_NUMERICAL(token,tf_idf)) as DM_NESTED_NUMERICALS) extracted_tokens_tfidf_1              from extracted_tokens_tfidf              group by id;   To build the clustering model, we create a settings table and then insert the various settings. Most notable are the number of clusters (20), using cosine distance which is better for text, turning off auto data preparation since the values are ready for mining, the number of iterations (20) to get a better model, and the split criterion of size for clusters that are roughly balanced in number of cases assigned. CREATE TABLE km_settings (setting_name  VARCHAR2(30), setting_value VARCHAR2(30)); BEGIN  INSERT INTO km_settings (setting_name, setting_value) VALUES     VALUES (dbms_data_mining.clus_num_clusters, 20);  INSERT INTO km_settings (setting_name, setting_value)     VALUES (dbms_data_mining.kmns_distance, dbms_data_mining.kmns_cosine);   INSERT INTO km_settings (setting_name, setting_value) VALUES     VALUES (dbms_data_mining.prep_auto,dbms_data_mining.prep_auto_off);   INSERT INTO km_settings (setting_name, setting_value) VALUES     VALUES (dbms_data_mining.kmns_iterations,20);   INSERT INTO km_settings (setting_name, setting_value) VALUES     VALUES (dbms_data_mining.kmns_split_criterion,dbms_data_mining.kmns_size);   COMMIT; END; With this in place, we can now build the clustering model. BEGIN     DBMS_DATA_MINING.CREATE_MODEL(     model_name          => 'TEXT_CLUSTERING_MODEL',     mining_function     => dbms_data_mining.clustering,     data_table_name     => 'extracted_tokens_tfidf_nt',     case_id_column_name => 'id',     settings_table_name => 'km_settings'); END;To generate cluster names from this model, check out my earlier post on that topic.

  • Are XML Comments Necessary Documentation?

    - by Bob Horn
    I used to be a fan of requiring XML comments for documentation. I've since changed my mind for two main reasons: Like good code, methods should be self-explanatory. In practice, most XML comments are useless noise that provide no additional value. Many times we simply use GhostDoc to generate generic comments, and this is what I mean by useless noise: /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the unit of measure. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The unit of measure. /// </value> public string UnitOfMeasure { get; set; } To me, that's obvious. Having said that, if there were special instructions to include, then we should absolutely use XML comments. I like this excerpt from this article: Sometimes, you will need to write comments. But, it should be the exception not the rule. Comments should only be used when they are expressing something that cannot be expressed in code. If you want to write elegant code, strive to eliminate comments and instead write self-documenting code. Am I wrong to think we should only be using XML comments when the code isn't enough to explain itself on its own? I believe this is a good example where XML comments make pretty code look ugly. It takes a class like this... public class RawMaterialLabel : EntityBase { public long Id { get; set; } public string ManufacturerId { get; set; } public string PartNumber { get; set; } public string Quantity { get; set; } public string UnitOfMeasure { get; set; } public string LotNumber { get; set; } public string SublotNumber { get; set; } public int LabelSerialNumber { get; set; } public string PurchaseOrderNumber { get; set; } public string PurchaseOrderLineNumber { get; set; } public DateTime ManufacturingDate { get; set; } public string LastModifiedUser { get; set; } public DateTime LastModifiedTime { get; set; } public Binary VersionNumber { get; set; } public ICollection<LotEquipmentScan> LotEquipmentScans { get; private set; } } ... And turns it into this: /// <summary> /// Container for properties of a raw material label /// </summary> public class RawMaterialLabel : EntityBase { /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the id. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The id. /// </value> public long Id { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the manufacturer id. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The manufacturer id. /// </value> public string ManufacturerId { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the part number. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The part number. /// </value> public string PartNumber { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the quantity. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The quantity. /// </value> public string Quantity { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the unit of measure. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The unit of measure. /// </value> public string UnitOfMeasure { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the lot number. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The lot number. /// </value> public string LotNumber { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the sublot number. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The sublot number. /// </value> public string SublotNumber { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the label serial number. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The label serial number. /// </value> public int LabelSerialNumber { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the purchase order number. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The purchase order number. /// </value> public string PurchaseOrderNumber { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the purchase order line number. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The purchase order line number. /// </value> public string PurchaseOrderLineNumber { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the manufacturing date. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The manufacturing date. /// </value> public DateTime ManufacturingDate { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the last modified user. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The last modified user. /// </value> public string LastModifiedUser { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the last modified time. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The last modified time. /// </value> public DateTime LastModifiedTime { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the version number. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The version number. /// </value> public Binary VersionNumber { get; set; } /// <summary> /// Gets the lot equipment scans. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The lot equipment scans. /// </value> public ICollection<LotEquipmentScan> LotEquipmentScans { get; private set; } }

  • SharePoint 2010 Replaceable Parameter, some observations…

    - by svdoever
    SharePoint Tools for Visual Studio 2010 provides a rudimentary mechanism for replaceable parameters that you can use in files that are not compiled, like ascx files and your project property settings. The basics on this can be found in the documentation at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee231545.aspx. There are some quirks however. For example: My Package name is MacawMastSP2010Templates, as defined in my Package properties: I want to use the $SharePoint.Package.Name$ replaceable parameter in my feature properties. But this parameter does not work in the “Deployment Path” property, while other parameters work there, while it works in the “Image Url” property. It just does not get expanded. So I had to resort to explicitly naming the first path of the deployment path: : You also see a special property for the “Receiver Class” in the format $SharePoint.Type.<GUID>.FullName$. The documentation gives the following description:The full name of the type matching the GUID in the token. The format of the GUID is lowercase and corresponds to the Guid.ToString(“D”) format (that is, xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx). Not very clear. After some searching it happened to be the guid as declared in my feature receiver code: In other properties you see a different set of replaceable parameters: We use a similar mechanism for replaceable parameter for years in our Macaw Solutions Factory for SharePoint 2007 development, where each replaceable parameter is a PowerShell function. This provides so much more power. For example in a feature declaration we can say: Code Snippet <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <!-- Template expansion      [[ProductDependency]] -> Wss3 or Moss2007      [[FeatureReceiverAssemblySignature]] -> for example: Macaw.Mast.Wss3.Templates.SharePoint.Features, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=6e9d15db2e2a0be5      [[FeatureReceiverClass]] -> for example: Macaw.Mast.Wss3.Templates.SharePoint.Features.SampleFeature.FeatureReceiver.SampleFeatureFeatureReceiver --> <Feature Id="[[$Feature.SampleFeature.ID]]"   Title="MAST [[$MastSolutionName]] Sample Feature"   Description="The MAST [[$MastSolutionName]] Sample Feature, where all possible elements in a feature are showcased"   Version="1.0.0.0"   Scope="Site"   Hidden="FALSE"   ImageUrl="[[FeatureImage]]"   ReceiverAssembly="[[FeatureReceiverAssemblySignature]]"   ReceiverClass="[[FeatureReceiverClass]]"   xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/">     <ElementManifests>         <ElementManifest Location="ExampleCustomActions.xml" />         <ElementManifest Location="ExampleSiteColumns.xml" />         <ElementManifest Location="ExampleContentTypes.xml" />         <ElementManifest Location="ExampleDocLib.xml" />         <ElementManifest Location="ExampleMasterPages.xml" />           <!-- Element files -->         [[GenerateXmlNodesForFiles -path 'ExampleDocLib\*.*' -node 'ElementFile' -attributes @{Location = { RelativePathToExpansionSourceFile -path $_ }}]]         [[GenerateXmlNodesForFiles -path 'ExampleMasterPages\*.*' -node 'ElementFile' -attributes @{Location = { RelativePathToExpansionSourceFile -path $_ }}]]         [[GenerateXmlNodesForFiles -path 'Resources\*.resx' -node 'ElementFile' -attributes @{Location = { RelativePathToExpansionSourceFile -path $_ }}]]     </ElementManifests> </Feature> We have a solution level PowerShell script file named TemplateExpansionConfiguration.ps1 where we declare our variables (starting with a $) and include helper functions: Code Snippet # ============================================================================================== # NAME: product:\src\Wss3\Templates\TemplateExpansionConfiguration.ps1 # # AUTHOR: Serge van den Oever, Macaw # DATE  : May 24, 2007 # # COMMENT: # Nota bene: define variable and function definitions global to be visible during template expansion. # # ============================================================================================== Set-PSDebug -strict -trace 0 #variables must have value before usage $global:ErrorActionPreference = 'Stop' # Stop on errors $global:VerbosePreference = 'Continue' # set to SilentlyContinue to get no verbose output   # Load template expansion utility functions . product:\tools\Wss3\MastDeploy\TemplateExpansionUtil.ps1   # If exists add solution expansion utility functions $solutionTemplateExpansionUtilFile = $MastSolutionDir + "\TemplateExpansionUtil.ps1" if ((Test-Path -Path $solutionTemplateExpansionUtilFile)) {     . $solutionTemplateExpansionUtilFile } # ==============================================================================================   # Expected: $Solution.ID; Unique GUID value identifying the solution (DON'T INCLUDE BRACKETS). # function: guid:UpperCaseWithoutCurlies -guid '{...}' ensures correct syntax $global:Solution = @{     ID = GuidUpperCaseWithoutCurlies -guid '{d366ced4-0b98-4fa8-b256-c5a35bcbc98b}'; }   #  DON'T INCLUDE BRACKETS for feature id's!!! I think I will bring back this mechanism, so it can work together with the built-in replaceable parameters, there are hooks to define you custom replacements as described by Waldek in this blog post.

  • Installing SharePoint 2013 on Windows 2012- standalone installation

    - by sreejukg
    In this article, I am going to share my experience while installing SharePoint 2013 on Windows 2012. This was the first time I tried SharePoint 2013. So I thought sharing the same will benefit somebody who would like to install SharePoint 2013 as a standalone installation. Standalone installation is meant for evaluation/development purposes. For production environments, you need to follow the best practices and create required service accounts. Microsoft has published the deployment guide for SharePoint 2013, you can download this from the below link. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30384 Since this is for development environment, I am not going to create any service account, I logged in to Windows 2012 as an administrator and just placed my installation DVD on the drive. When I run the setup from the DVD, the below splash screen appears. This reflects the new UI changes happening with all Microsoft based applications; the interface matches the metro style applications (Windows 8 style). As you can see the options are same as that of the SharePoint 2010 installation screen. Click on the “install software prerequisites” link to get all the prerequisites get installed. You need a valid internet connection to do this. Clicking on the install software prerequisites will bring the following dialog. Click Next, you will see the terms and conditions. Select I accept check box and click Next. The installation will start immediately. For any reason, if you stop the installation and start it later, the product preparation tool will check whether a particular component is installed and if yes, then the installation of that particular component will be skipped. If you do not have internet connection, you will face the download error as follows. At any point of failure, the error log will be available for you to review. If all OK, you will reach the below dialog, this means some components will be installed once the PC is rebooted. Be noted that the clicking on finish will not ask you for further confirmation. So make sure to save all your work before clicking on finish button. Once the server is restarted, the product preparation tool will start automatically and you will see the following dialog. Now go to the SharePoint 2013 splash page and click on “Install SharePoint Server” link. You need to enter the product key here. Enter the product key as you received and click continue. Select the Checkbox for the license agreement and click on continue button. Now you need to select the installation type. Select Stand-alone and click on “Install Now” button. A dialog will pop up that updates you with the process and progress. The installation took around 15-20 minutes with 2 GB or Ram installed in the server, seems fair. Once the installation is over, you will see the following Dialog. Make sure you select the Run the products and configuration wizard. If you miss to select the check box, you can find the products and configuration wizard from the start tiles. The products and configuration wizard will start. If you get any dialog saying some of the services will be stopped, you just accept it. Since we selected standalone installation, it will not ask for any user input, as it already knows the database to be configured. Once the configuration is over without any problems you will see the configuration successful message. Also you can find the link to central administration on the Start Screen.     Troubleshooting During my first setup process, I got the below error. System.ArgumentException: The SDDL string contains an invalid sid or a sid that cannot be translated. Parameter name: sddlForm at System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor.BinaryFormFromSddlForm(String sddlForm) at System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor..ctor(String sddlForm) at Microsoft.SharePoint.Win32.SPNetApi32.CreateShareSecurityDescriptor(String[] readNames, String[] changeNames, String[] fullControlNames, String& sddl) at Microsoft.SharePoint.Win32.SPNetApi32.CreateFileShare(String name, String description, String path) at Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPServer.CreateFileShare(String name, String description, String path) at Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.AnalyticsAdministration.CreateAnalyticsUNCShare(String dirParentLocation, String shareName) at Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.AnalyticsAdministration.ProvisionAnalyticsShare(SearchServiceApplication serviceApplication) ………………………………………… ………………………………………… The configuration wizard displayed the error as below. The error occurred in step 8 of the configuration wizard and by the time the central administration is already provisioned. So from the start, I was able to open the central administration website, but the search service application was showing as error. I found a good blog that specifies the reason for error. http://kbdump.com/sharepoint2013-standalone-config-error-create-sample-data/ The workaround specified in the blog works fine. I think SharePoint must be provisioning Search using the Network Service account, so instead of giving permission to everyone, you could try giving permission to Network Service account(I didn’t try this yet, buy you could try and post your feedback here). In production environment you will have specific accounts that have access rights as recommended by Microsoft guidelines. Installation of SharePoint 2013 is pretty straight forward. Hope you enjoyed the article!

  • Wrapping ASP.NET Client Callbacks

    - by Ricardo Peres
    Client Callbacks are probably the less known (and I dare say, less loved) of all the AJAX options in ASP.NET, which also include the UpdatePanel, Page Methods and Web Services. The reason for that, I believe, is it’s relative complexity: Get a reference to a JavaScript function; Dynamically register function that calls the above reference; Have a JavaScript handler call the registered function. However, it has some the nice advantage of being self-contained, that is, doesn’t need additional files, such as web services, JavaScript libraries, etc, or static methods declared on a page, or any kind of attributes. So, here’s what I want to do: Have a DOM element which exposes a method that is executed server side, passing it a string and returning a string; Have a server-side event that handles the client-side call; Have two client-side user-supplied callback functions for handling the success and error results. I’m going to develop a custom control without user interface that does the registration of the client JavaScript method as well as a server-side event that can be hooked by some handler on a page. My markup will look like this: 1: <script type="text/javascript"> 1:  2:  3: function onCallbackSuccess(result, context) 4: { 5: } 6:  7: function onCallbackError(error, context) 8: { 9: } 10:  </script> 2: <my:CallbackControl runat="server" ID="callback" SendAllData="true" OnCallback="OnCallback"/> The control itself looks like this: 1: public class CallbackControl : Control, ICallbackEventHandler 2: { 3: #region Public constructor 4: public CallbackControl() 5: { 6: this.SendAllData = false; 7: this.Async = true; 8: } 9: #endregion 10:  11: #region Public properties and events 12: public event EventHandler<CallbackEventArgs> Callback; 13:  14: [DefaultValue(true)] 15: public Boolean Async 16: { 17: get; 18: set; 19: } 20:  21: [DefaultValue(false)] 22: public Boolean SendAllData 23: { 24: get; 25: set; 26: } 27:  28: #endregion 29:  30: #region Protected override methods 31:  32: protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter writer) 33: { 34: writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Id, this.ClientID); 35: writer.RenderBeginTag(HtmlTextWriterTag.Span); 36:  37: base.Render(writer); 38:  39: writer.RenderEndTag(); 40: } 41:  42: protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e) 43: { 44: String reference = this.Page.ClientScript.GetCallbackEventReference(this, "arg", "onCallbackSuccess", "context", "onCallbackError", this.Async); 45: String script = String.Concat("\ndocument.getElementById('", this.ClientID, "').callback = function(arg, context, onCallbackSuccess, onCallbackError){", ((this.SendAllData == true) ? "__theFormPostCollection.length = 0; __theFormPostData = ''; WebForm_InitCallback(); " : String.Empty), reference, ";};\n"); 46:  47: this.Page.ClientScript.RegisterStartupScript(this.GetType(), String.Concat("callback", this.ClientID), script, true); 48:  49: base.OnInit(e); 50: } 51:  52: #endregion 53:  54: #region Protected virtual methods 55: protected virtual void OnCallback(CallbackEventArgs args) 56: { 57: EventHandler<CallbackEventArgs> handler = this.Callback; 58:  59: if (handler != null) 60: { 61: handler(this, args); 62: } 63: } 64:  65: #endregion 66:  67: #region ICallbackEventHandler Members 68:  69: String ICallbackEventHandler.GetCallbackResult() 70: { 71: CallbackEventArgs args = new CallbackEventArgs(this.Context.Items["Data"] as String); 72:  73: this.OnCallback(args); 74:  75: return (args.Result); 76: } 77:  78: void ICallbackEventHandler.RaiseCallbackEvent(String eventArgument) 79: { 80: this.Context.Items["Data"] = eventArgument; 81: } 82:  83: #endregion 84: } And the event argument class: 1: [Serializable] 2: public class CallbackEventArgs : EventArgs 3: { 4: public CallbackEventArgs(String argument) 5: { 6: this.Argument = argument; 7: this.Result = String.Empty; 8: } 9:  10: public String Argument 11: { 12: get; 13: private set; 14: } 15:  16: public String Result 17: { 18: get; 19: set; 20: } 21: } You will notice two properties on the CallbackControl: Async: indicates if the call should be made asynchronously or synchronously (the default); SendAllData: indicates if the callback call will include the view and control state of all of the controls on the page, so that, on the server side, they will have their properties set when the Callback event is fired. The CallbackEventArgs class exposes two properties: Argument: the read-only argument passed to the client-side function; Result: the result to return to the client-side callback function, set from the Callback event handler. An example of an handler for the Callback event would be: 1: protected void OnCallback(Object sender, CallbackEventArgs e) 2: { 3: e.Result = String.Join(String.Empty, e.Argument.Reverse()); 4: } Finally, in order to fire the Callback event from the client, you only need this: 1: <input type="text" id="input"/> 2: <input type="button" value="Get Result" onclick="document.getElementById('callback').callback(callback(document.getElementById('input').value, 'context', onCallbackSuccess, onCallbackError))"/> The syntax of the callback function is: arg: some string argument; context: some context that will be passed to the callback functions (success or failure); callbackSuccessFunction: some function that will be called when the callback succeeds; callbackFailureFunction: some function that will be called if the callback fails for some reason. Give it a try and see if it helps!

  • C#: Optional Parameters - Pros and Pitfalls

    - by James Michael Hare
    When Microsoft rolled out Visual Studio 2010 with C# 4, I was very excited to learn how I could apply all the new features and enhancements to help make me and my team more productive developers. Default parameters have been around forever in C++, and were intentionally omitted in Java in favor of using overloading to satisfy that need as it was though that having too many default parameters could introduce code safety issues.  To some extent I can understand that move, as I’ve been bitten by default parameter pitfalls before, but at the same time I feel like Java threw out the baby with the bathwater in that move and I’m glad to see C# now has them. This post briefly discusses the pros and pitfalls of using default parameters.  I’m avoiding saying cons, because I really don’t believe using default parameters is a negative thing, I just think there are things you must watch for and guard against to avoid abuses that can cause code safety issues. Pro: Default Parameters Can Simplify Code Let’s start out with positives.  Consider how much cleaner it is to reduce all the overloads in methods or constructors that simply exist to give the semblance of optional parameters.  For example, we could have a Message class defined which allows for all possible initializations of a Message: 1: public class Message 2: { 3: // can either cascade these like this or duplicate the defaults (which can introduce risk) 4: public Message() 5: : this(string.Empty) 6: { 7: } 8:  9: public Message(string text) 10: : this(text, null) 11: { 12: } 13:  14: public Message(string text, IDictionary<string, string> properties) 15: : this(text, properties, -1) 16: { 17: } 18:  19: public Message(string text, IDictionary<string, string> properties, long timeToLive) 20: { 21: // ... 22: } 23: }   Now consider the same code with default parameters: 1: public class Message 2: { 3: // can either cascade these like this or duplicate the defaults (which can introduce risk) 4: public Message(string text = "", IDictionary<string, string> properties = null, long timeToLive = -1) 5: { 6: // ... 7: } 8: }   Much more clean and concise and no repetitive coding!  In addition, in the past if you wanted to be able to cleanly supply timeToLive and accept the default on text and properties above, you would need to either create another overload, or pass in the defaults explicitly.  With named parameters, though, we can do this easily: 1: var msg = new Message(timeToLive: 100);   Pro: Named Parameters can Improve Readability I must say one of my favorite things with the default parameters addition in C# is the named parameters.  It lets code be a lot easier to understand visually with no comments.  Think how many times you’ve run across a TimeSpan declaration with 4 arguments and wondered if they were passing in days/hours/minutes/seconds or hours/minutes/seconds/milliseconds.  A novice running through your code may wonder what it is.  Named arguments can help resolve the visual ambiguity: 1: // is this days/hours/minutes/seconds (no) or hours/minutes/seconds/milliseconds (yes) 2: var ts = new TimeSpan(1, 2, 3, 4); 3:  4: // this however is visually very explicit 5: var ts = new TimeSpan(days: 1, hours: 2, minutes: 3, seconds: 4);   Or think of the times you’ve run across something passing a Boolean literal and wondered what it was: 1: // what is false here? 2: var sub = CreateSubscriber(hostname, port, false); 3:  4: // aha! Much more visibly clear 5: var sub = CreateSubscriber(hostname, port, isBuffered: false);   Pitfall: Don't Insert new Default Parameters In Between Existing Defaults Now let’s consider a two potential pitfalls.  The first is really an abuse.  It’s not really a fault of the default parameters themselves, but a fault in the use of them.  Let’s consider that Message constructor again with defaults.  Let’s say you want to add a messagePriority to the message and you think this is more important than a timeToLive value, so you decide to put messagePriority before it in the default, this gives you: 1: public class Message 2: { 3: public Message(string text = "", IDictionary<string, string> properties = null, int priority = 5, long timeToLive = -1) 4: { 5: // ... 6: } 7: }   Oh boy have we set ourselves up for failure!  Why?  Think of all the code out there that could already be using the library that already specified the timeToLive, such as this possible call: 1: var msg = new Message(“An error occurred”, myProperties, 1000);   Before this specified a message with a TTL of 1000, now it specifies a message with a priority of 1000 and a time to live of -1 (infinite).  All of this with NO compiler errors or warnings. So the rule to take away is if you are adding new default parameters to a method that’s currently in use, make sure you add them to the end of the list or create a brand new method or overload. Pitfall: Beware of Default Parameters in Inheritance and Interface Implementation Now, the second potential pitfalls has to do with inheritance and interface implementation.  I’ll illustrate with a puzzle: 1: public interface ITag 2: { 3: void WriteTag(string tagName = "ITag"); 4: } 5:  6: public class BaseTag : ITag 7: { 8: public virtual void WriteTag(string tagName = "BaseTag") { Console.WriteLine(tagName); } 9: } 10:  11: public class SubTag : BaseTag 12: { 13: public override void WriteTag(string tagName = "SubTag") { Console.WriteLine(tagName); } 14: } 15:  16: public static class Program 17: { 18: public static void Main() 19: { 20: SubTag subTag = new SubTag(); 21: BaseTag subByBaseTag = subTag; 22: ITag subByInterfaceTag = subTag; 23:  24: // what happens here? 25: subTag.WriteTag(); 26: subByBaseTag.WriteTag(); 27: subByInterfaceTag.WriteTag(); 28: } 29: }   What happens?  Well, even though the object in each case is SubTag whose tag is “SubTag”, you will get: 1: SubTag 2: BaseTag 3: ITag   Why?  Because default parameter are resolved at compile time, not runtime!  This means that the default does not belong to the object being called, but by the reference type it’s being called through.  Since the SubTag instance is being called through an ITag reference, it will use the default specified in ITag. So the moral of the story here is to be very careful how you specify defaults in interfaces or inheritance hierarchies.  I would suggest avoiding repeating them, and instead concentrating on the layer of classes or interfaces you must likely expect your caller to be calling from. For example, if you have a messaging factory that returns an IMessage which can be either an MsmqMessage or JmsMessage, it only makes since to put the defaults at the IMessage level since chances are your user will be using the interface only. So let’s sum up.  In general, I really love default and named parameters in C# 4.0.  I think they’re a great tool to help make your code easier to read and maintain when used correctly. On the plus side, default parameters: Reduce redundant overloading for the sake of providing optional calling structures. Improve readability by being able to name an ambiguous argument. But remember to make sure you: Do not insert new default parameters in the middle of an existing set of default parameters, this may cause unpredictable behavior that may not necessarily throw a syntax error – add to end of list or create new method. Be extremely careful how you use default parameters in inheritance hierarchies and interfaces – choose the most appropriate level to add the defaults based on expected usage. • How do I add additional parameters to query string of a Firefox Search Plugin?

    - by Goto10
    I have just installed the DuckDuckGo add-on in Firefox 11.0, running on XP SP 3. I would like to add additional parameters to the query string. However, any changes I make are not reflected in the query string when doing a search. I found the duckduckgo.xml file at C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Profile Name.default\searchplugins. I opened it up with Notepad++ and added the line for kl=uk-en: <SearchPlugin xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/2006/browser/search/" xmlns:os="http://a9.com/-/spec/opensearch/1.1/"> <os:ShortName>DuckDuckGo</os:ShortName> <os:Description>Search DuckDuckGo (SSL)</os:Description> <os:InputEncoding>UTF-8</os:InputEncoding> <os:Image width="16" height="16">data:image/x-icon;base64, -Removed to shorten-</os:Image> <os:Url type="text/html" method="GET" template="https://duckduckgo.com/"> <os:Param name="q" value="{searchTerms}"/> <os:Param name="kl" value="uk-en"/> </os:Url> </SearchPlugin> However, the kl=uk-en parameter does not appear in the query string when searching (despite several Firefox restarts).

  • Anatomy of a .NET Assembly - Custom attribute encoding

    - by Simon Cooper
    In my previous post, I covered how field, method, and other types of signatures are encoded in a .NET assembly. Custom attribute signatures differ quite a bit from these, which consequently affects attribute specifications in C#. Custom attribute specifications In C#, you can apply a custom attribute to a type or type member, specifying a constructor as well as the values of fields or properties on the attribute type: public class ExampleAttribute : Attribute { public ExampleAttribute(int ctorArg1, string ctorArg2) { ... } public Type ExampleType { get; set; } } [Example(5, "6", ExampleType = typeof(string))] public class C { ... } How does this specification actually get encoded and stored in an assembly? Specification blob values Custom attribute specification signatures use the same building blocks as other types of signatures; the ELEMENT_TYPE structure. However, they significantly differ from other types of signatures, in that the actual parameter values need to be stored along with type information. There are two types of specification arguments in a signature blob; fixed args and named args. Fixed args are the arguments to the attribute type constructor, named arguments are specified after the constructor arguments to provide a value to a field or property on the constructed attribute type (PropertyName = propValue) Values in an attribute blob are limited to one of the basic types (one of the number types, character, or boolean), a reference to a type, an enum (which, in .NET, has to use one of the integer types as a base representation), or arrays of any of those. Enums and the basic types are easy to store in a blob - you simply store the binary representation. Strings are stored starting with a compressed integer indicating the length of the string, followed by the UTF8 characters. Array values start with an integer indicating the number of elements in the array, then the item values concatentated together. Rather than using a coded token, Type values are stored using a string representing the type name and fully qualified assembly name (for example, MyNs.MyType, MyAssembly, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=0123456789abcdef). If the type is in the current assembly or mscorlib then just the type name can be used. This is probably done to prevent direct references between assemblies solely because of attribute specification arguments; assemblies can be loaded in the reflection-only context and attribute arguments still processed, without loading the entire assembly. Fixed and named arguments Each entry in the CustomAttribute metadata table contains a reference to the object the attribute is applied to, the attribute constructor, and the specification blob. The number and type of arguments to the constructor (the fixed args) can be worked out by the method signature referenced by the attribute constructor, and so the fixed args can simply be concatenated together in the blob without any extra type information. Named args are different. These specify the value to assign to a field or property once the attribute type has been constructed. In the CLR, fields and properties can be overloaded just on their type; different fields and properties can have the same name. Therefore, to uniquely identify a field or property you need: Whether it's a field or property (indicated using byte values 0x53 and 0x54, respectively) The field or property type The field or property name After the fixed arg values is a 2-byte number specifying the number of named args in the blob. Each named argument has the above information concatenated together, mostly using the basic ELEMENT_TYPE values, in the same way as a method or field signature. A Type argument is represented using the byte 0x50, and an enum argument is represented using the byte 0x55 followed by a string specifying the name and assembly of the enum type. The named argument property information is followed by the argument value, using the same encoding as fixed args. Boxed objects This would be all very well, were it not for object and object[]. Arguments and properties of type object allow a value of any allowed argument type to be specified. As a result, more information needs to be specified in the blob to interpret the argument bytes as the correct type. So, the argument value is simple prepended with the type of the value by specifying the ELEMENT_TYPE or name of the enum the value represents. For named arguments, a field or property of type object is represented using the byte 0x51, with the actual type specified in the argument value. Some examples... All property signatures start with the 2-byte value 0x0001. Similar to my previous post in the series, names in capitals correspond to a particular byte value in the ELEMENT_TYPE structure. For strings, I'll simply give the string value, rather than the length and UTF8 encoding in the actual blob. I'll be using the following enum and attribute types to demonstrate specification encodings: class AttrAttribute : Attribute { public AttrAttribute() {} public AttrAttribute(Type[] tArray) {} public AttrAttribute(object o) {} public AttrAttribute(MyEnum e) {} public AttrAttribute(ushort x, int y) {} public AttrAttribute(string str, Type type1, Type type2) {} public int Prop1 { get; set; } public object Prop2 { get; set; } public object[] ObjectArray; } enum MyEnum : int { Val1 = 1, Val2 = 2 } Now, some examples: Here, the the specification binds to the (ushort, int) attribute constructor, with fixed args only. The specification blob starts off with a prolog, followed by the two constructor arguments, then the number of named arguments (zero): [Attr(42, 84)] 0x0001 0x002a 0x00000054 0x0000 An example of string and type encoding: [Attr("MyString", typeof(Array), typeof(System.Windows.Forms.Form))] 0x0001 "MyString" "System.Array" "System.Windows.Forms.Form, System.Windows.Forms, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089" 0x0000 As you can see, the full assembly specification of a type is only needed if the type isn't in the current assembly or mscorlib. Note, however, that the C# compiler currently chooses to fully-qualify mscorlib types anyway. An object argument (this binds to the object attribute constructor), and two named arguments (a null string is represented by 0xff and the empty string by 0x00) [Attr((ushort)40, Prop1 = 12, Prop2 = "")] 0x0001 U2 0x0028 0x0002 0x54 I4 "Prop1" 0x0000000c 0x54 0x51 "Prop2" STRING 0x00 Right, more complicated now. A type array as a fixed argument: [Attr(new[] { typeof(string), typeof(object) })] 0x0001 0x00000002 // the number of elements "System.String" "System.Object" 0x0000 An enum value, which is simply represented using the underlying value. The CLR works out that it's an enum using information in the attribute constructor signature: [Attr(MyEnum.Val1)] 0x0001 0x00000001 0x0000 And finally, a null array, and an object array as a named argument: [Attr((Type[])null, ObjectArray = new object[] { (byte)2, typeof(decimal), null, MyEnum.Val2 })] 0x0001 0xffffffff 0x0001 0x53 SZARRAY 0x51 "ObjectArray" 0x00000004 U1 0x02 0x50 "System.Decimal" STRING 0xff 0x55 "MyEnum" 0x00000002 As you'll notice, a null object is encoded as a null string value, and a null array is represented using a length of -1 (0xffffffff). How does this affect C#? So, we can now explain why the limits on attribute arguments are so strict in C#. Attribute specification blobs are limited to basic numbers, enums, types, and arrays. As you can see, this is because the raw CLR encoding can only accommodate those types. Special byte patterns have to be used to indicate object, string, Type, or enum values in named arguments; you can't specify an arbitary object type, as there isn't a generalised way of encoding the resulting value in the specification blob. In particular, decimal values can't be encoded, as it isn't a 'built-in' CLR type that has a native representation (you'll notice that decimal constants in C# programs are compiled as several integer arguments to DecimalConstantAttribute). Jagged arrays also aren't natively supported, although you can get around it by using an array as a value to an object argument: [Attr(new object[] { new object[] { new Type[] { typeof(string) } }, 42 })] Finally... Phew! That was a bit longer than I thought it would be. Custom attribute encodings are complicated! Hopefully this series has been an informative look at what exactly goes on inside a .NET assembly. In the next blog posts, I'll be carrying on with the 'Inside Red Gate' series.

  • Synchronized Property Changes (Part 4)

    - by Geertjan
    The next step is to activate the undo/redo functionality... for a Node. Something I've not seen done before. I.e., when the Node is renamed via F2 on the Node, the "Undo/Redo" buttons should start working. Here is the start of the solution, via this item in the mailing list and Timon Veenstra's BeanNode class, note especially the items in bold: public class ShipNode extends BeanNode implements PropertyChangeListener, UndoRedo.Provider { private final InstanceContent ic; private final ShipSaveCapability saveCookie; private UndoRedo.Manager manager; private String oldDisplayName; private String newDisplayName; private Ship ship; public ShipNode(Ship bean) throws IntrospectionException { this(bean, new InstanceContent()); } private ShipNode(Ship bean, InstanceContent ic) throws IntrospectionException { super(bean, Children.LEAF, new ProxyLookup(new AbstractLookup(ic), Lookups.singleton(bean))); this.ic = ic; setDisplayName(bean.getType()); setShortDescription(String.valueOf(bean.getYear())); saveCookie = new ShipSaveCapability(bean); bean.addPropertyChangeListener(WeakListeners.propertyChange(this, bean)); } @Override public Action[] getActions(boolean context) { List<? extends Action> shipActions = Utilities.actionsForPath("Actions/Ship"); return shipActions.toArray(new Action[shipActions.size()]); } protected void fire(boolean modified) { if (modified) { ic.add(saveCookie); } else { ic.remove(saveCookie); } } @Override public UndoRedo getUndoRedo() { manager = Lookup.getDefault().lookup( UndoRedo.Manager.class); return manager; } private class ShipSaveCapability implements SaveCookie { private final Ship bean; public ShipSaveCapability(Ship bean) { this.bean = bean; } @Override public void save() throws IOException { StatusDisplayer.getDefault().setStatusText("Saving..."); fire(false); } } @Override public boolean canRename() { return true; } @Override public void setName(String newDisplayName) { Ship c = getLookup().lookup(Ship.class); oldDisplayName = c.getType(); c.setType(newDisplayName); fireNameChange(oldDisplayName, newDisplayName); fire(true); fireUndoableEvent("type", ship, oldDisplayName, newDisplayName); } public void fireUndoableEvent(String property, Ship source, Object oldValue, Object newValue) { ReUndoableEdit reUndoableEdit = new ReUndoableEdit( property, source, oldValue, newValue); UndoableEditEvent undoableEditEvent = new UndoableEditEvent( this, reUndoableEdit); manager.undoableEditHappened(undoableEditEvent); } private class ReUndoableEdit extends AbstractUndoableEdit { private Object oldValue; private Object newValue; private Ship source; private String property; public ReUndoableEdit(String property, Ship source, Object oldValue, Object newValue) { super(); this.oldValue = oldValue; this.newValue = newValue; this.source = source; this.property = property; } @Override public void undo() throws CannotUndoException { setName(oldValue.toString()); } @Override public void redo() throws CannotRedoException { setName(newValue.toString()); } } @Override public String getDisplayName() { Ship c = getLookup().lookup(Ship.class); if (null != c.getType()) { return c.getType(); } return super.getDisplayName(); } @Override public String getShortDescription() { Ship c = getLookup().lookup(Ship.class); if (null != String.valueOf(c.getYear())) { return String.valueOf(c.getYear()); } return super.getShortDescription(); } @Override public void propertyChange(PropertyChangeEvent evt) { if (evt.getPropertyName().equals("type")) { String oldDisplayName = evt.getOldValue().toString(); String newDisplayName = evt.getNewValue().toString(); fireDisplayNameChange(oldDisplayName, newDisplayName); } else if (evt.getPropertyName().equals("year")) { String oldToolTip = evt.getOldValue().toString(); String newToolTip = evt.getNewValue().toString(); fireShortDescriptionChange(oldToolTip, newToolTip); } fire(true); } } Undo works when rename is done, but Redo never does, because Undo is constantly activated, since it is reactivated whenever there is a name change. And why must the UndoRedoManager be retrieved from the Lookup (it doesn't work otherwise)? Don't get that part of the code either. Help welcome!

  • Allow connections to only a specific URL via HTTPS with iptables, -m recent (potentially) and -m string (definitely)

    - by The Consumer
    Hello, Let's say that, for example, I want to allow connections only to subdomain.mydomain.com; I have it partially working, but it sometimes gets in a freaky loop with the client key exchange once the Client Hello is allowed. Ah, to make it even more annoying, it's a self-signed certificate, and the page requires authentication, and HTTPS is listening on a non-standard port... So the TCP/SSL Handshake experience will differ greatly for many users. Is -m recent the right route? Is there a more graceful method to allow the complete TCP stream once the string is seen? Here's what I have so far: #iptables -N SSL #iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp -j SSL #iptables -A SSL -m recent --set -p tcp --syn --dport 400 #iptables -A SSL -m recent --update -p tcp --tcp-flags PSH,SYN,ACK SYN,ACK --sport 400 #iptables -A SSL -m recent --update -p tcp --tcp-flags PSH,SYN,ACK ACK --dport 400 #iptables -A SSL -m recent --remove -p tcp --tcp-flags PSH,ACK PSH,ACK --dport 400 -m string --algo kmp --string "subdomain.mydomain.com" -j ACCEPT Yes, I have tried to get around this with nginx tweaks, but I can't get nginx to return a 444 or abrupt disconnect before the client hello, if you can think of a way to achieve this instead, I'm all ears, err, eyes. (As suggested by a user, bringing this inquiry over from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4628157/allow-connections-to-only-a-specific-url-via-https-with-iptables-m-recent-pote)

  • Weird UPD packets on incoming FTP MLSD command

    - by FractalizeR
    Hello. I am developing a firewall script for my server. So far it is working fine, except for FTP. Server is dedicated, CentOS based with static IP. There is no NAT between me and server. IPTables is a firewall. Here is a script I use to configure iptables: http://pastebin.com/f54a70fec I allow all RELATED and ESTABLISHED connections in it and load all conn_track modules. I supposed it to be sufficient in order FTP to work with iptables. The problem is that FTP is not working either in passive or active mode. FileZilla and TotalCommander just hangs on MLSD FTP command. • Starting php-cgi at boot on mac os x 10.6.8

    - by nikhil
    I'm new to mac os, I have installed and configured nginx with php-fastcgi. I need to run this command in a terminal and keep that terminal open to access php files from my browser. php-cgi -b 127.0.0.1:9000 -q Here's the plist that I wrote by looking up sources on the internet <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Debug</key> <false/> <key>EnvironmentVariables</key> <dict> <key>PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN</key> <string>2</string> <key>PHP_FCGI_MAX_REQUESTS</key> <string>1000</string> </dict> <key>RunAtLoad</key> <true/> <key>KeepAlive</key> <true/> <key>UserName</key> <string>nikhil</string> <key>Label</key> <string>php-fastcgi</string> <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/usr/bin/php-cgi</string> <string>-b 127.0.0.1:9000</string> <string>-q</string> </array> </dict> </plist> I'm loading it using launchctl load -w ~/Library/LaunchAgents/php-fastcgi.plist without any success, can anyone tell me how this can be done.
