    Here is the situation. Our organization has a fair amount of data in the form of documents, images, videos stored on a intranet server. We need to be able to expose these documents via some sort of search functionality on the intranet. Provide some mechanism to organize and tag the documents on hard disk. Ideally we'd also like to provide a unified search across documents on the google apps for business instance that we have. Any ideas on how to approach this problem ?

    First, thank you in advance for any help that you can give a recent transplant from Windows to Ubuntu. I have a question that I have been seeking the answer too but I draw a blank at every turn. I design websites, free of charge, for nonprofit organizations that are just starting and do not have the resources to hire a design firm. I am in need of a flash/swf editor and compiler. I had a program that I used with the awful previous O/S, however WINE would not run the program. Thank you in advance for any help that you can offer. Since I do not earn a dime for doing this, I would prefer if the program was open source, however any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    I want to deploy my PHP and Ajax based Dating website to multiple physical servers. Does anyone know the method. Is there possible any method to save the files and setting (and also the user input), on all of the physical server, so that the servers do the following jobs. Servers used as a network, speeding up the process giving a robust thing to the end user. Data to be stored on all the servers' hard drivers, and Every server have the internet connection from different provider, so for example a. if any of the internet providers gets down, or b. there occur any hardware or power failure, the website still runs, without a break and without any data loss. Does anyone know about some online course, or some comprehensive tutorials about this topic ?

  • http request terminating early

    I noticed that on some of my sites, images were occasionally not getting downloaded fully. After a bit of investigation it appears that it is not restricted to images - .css, .js etc were also occasionally terminating early. The faults appear to be random. When I use the debug/proxy tool Fiddler2 reports that fewer bytes have been received than were requested. Firebug reports "Image corrupt or truncated". Obviously this is mainly a concern between me and my hosting company. However despite many emails they have not been able to get to the bottom of it. Transfer to another hosting company is obviously an option but is really a last resort. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before or can anyone suggest what might be causing it. Or any apache setting or something that I can ask them to check out. Will apache log this kind of error - they havent been able to provide me with any logs, but if I know exactly where things have been logged, maybe I can prompt them in to action.

    I am just starting up a small website development business and one of the issues I am having is remembering passwords and account information for clients hosting, cpanel, ftp accounts etc. I was wondering what is the most suitable system / industry standard for controlling such information? Pretty marginal on the close there... I read the FAQ and I felt list this could be a common issue for webmasters, its defiantly not a coding questions so stackoverflow is out of the question and its not a broad question its focused on one particular aspect of being a webmaster.

I would like to markup my business listing 'profile' level pages for display as enhanced listings/rich-snippets complete with business names, addresses and phone numbers. I would also like to display site-links and path-based breadcrumbs to help users navigate site directory hierarchy (which is deep). Is there a limit to the amount of breadcrumbs a site can leave? Is there a separate limit on the number of breadcrumbs which Google/Bing will display in the SERP? What kind of markup language(s) would be needed to best position my site to show site-links AND breadcrumbs?     I'm still wrapping my head around REST, but I wonder if someone can help with any suggestions or approaches to role based access control for a RESTful service, particularly from the point of view of securing the data and how the URLs might look. It's probably best to consider an example: Say I have a REST service for Customers, and want to split the users of this REST service into Admin, Editor and Reader roles: Admins can change all attributes of a Customer resource Editors can change only some Readers can only view them. Access control rights are assigned to the Customers entities individually. So for example a user of the service might have admin rights to Customers 1,2 and 3 but Editor access to 4,5 and Reader access to 7,8,9. Now consider the user calling the service. What is a good way to seperate the list of Customers for the current User? GET /Customer - this might get a list of all customers that the current user has Admin\Editor\Reader access to. But then on each Customer the consumer would need an indication of what role they have. Or would it be "better" having something like GET /Customer/Admin - return all customers the current user has Admin access to. Just looking for some high level pointers or reading on a decent way to secure\filter the resources based on roles of the current user.

    I looked at all sites of SO and couldn't find any suitable to ask this question but posting here as nearest match to scenario After 1 months research I basically give up on getting all URL's from a search results programmatically, I looked at Google Search API to find a way to get millions of search results "URL's" to be specific to a text file or something relative but no success, but I am 100% there must be a way or trick of doing it. Real Question : Is there anyway programmatically or manually I can get 1000+ search results (URLs using search query e.g. "Apple" returns million of results on google and I want as much as possible URLs of them results in a text file)

    I might buy an SSL certificate for my sie. I know that it will help me in many ways. But will there be dis-advantages also? eg. If I load an image from another server (using plain http), will that alert the customer saying something is wrong? Will I be able to use all existing codes like phpbb, awstats etc without a problem? Will there be any issue if redirect a page from my domain.com to my subdomain.domain.com using a meta refresh or .htaccess?   • Is there a proven concept to website reverse certificate authentication?

    We're looking at exposing some of our internal application data externally via a website. The actual details of the website aren't that interesting, it'll be built using ASP.NET/IIS etc, that might be relevant. With this, I'm essentially I'm looking for a mechanism to authenticate users viewing my website. This sounds trivial, a username/password is typically fine, but I want more. Now I've read plenty about SSL/x.509 to realise that the CA determines that we're alright, and that the user can trust us. But I want to trust the user, I want the user to be rejected if they don't have the correct credentials. I've seen a system for online banking whereby the bank issues a certificate which gets installed on the users' computer (it was actually smartcard based). If the website can't discover/utilise the key-pair then you are immediately rejected! This is brutal, but necessary. Is there a mechanism where I can do the following: Generate a certificate for a user Issue the certificate for them to install, it can be installed on 1 machine If their certificate is not accessible, they are denied all access A standard username/password scheme is then used after that SSL employed using their certificate once they're "in" This really must already exist, please point me in the right direction!     JSR 357 (Social Media API) has not passed the initial ballot which means, according to the JCP rules, that "the JSR submitter(s) who may revise the JSR and resubmit it within 14 days". Given the comments associated with the negative votes, it may be challenging for the submitters to address the concerns about the scope assessed by many as being too wide. Standardization is a difficult task and the JCP (the Executive Committee in fact) played its role by pointing out the challenges ahead of such a JSR as it was envisioned by its submitters, and thus the risk of never completing. If anything this proves that the JCP is working as expected. For those disappointed that Java will not get a standard "Social Media API" (for now at least), let me remind you of the recent open-sourcing of DaliCore.

  • Can I select which folders the Photos live tile chooses from?

    The built-in Photos app in Windows 8 has a live tile on the start screen that shows photos from your pictures library. It's a cool little visual, even if it's not particularly useful. The problem is that a lot of image files on my computer are not really photos per se -- I have a lot of screenshots, PNGs of technical drawings, graph images, etc. Those all look pretty awkward on the start screen. I look pretty awkward on the start screen too... sometimes photos like resume profile shots show up that I don't want to delete, but they're not really what I want to be staring at when I start my computer up. I'm looking for some way to configure which folders the Photos app should look in for images to display on the live tile. That way, I could point it to some directories of pretty scenic pictures I've taken, and not have to see graphs and my own mug. For the time being, I've just disabled the live tile (right click - disable live tile), but I would ultimately like to have this functionality, just with more control over it.

    I have a lot of time invested in creating Wordpress templates. I want to release combinations of these templates along with different styles and Fancy Front pages as "Premium Wordpress Themes". What I need to know is what does "Premium" mean? What do people expect of a GPL theme vs. a Premium theme? Are there features that are considered required to be premium? Are there features that are in demand but considered "exceptional" i.e. not part of every premium theme? How can I tell the difference? I have heard tounge-in-cheek answers that say that any theme that makes money is premium, but I mean to ask about what gives an outstanding theme it's quality. Why is it worth more? I am technically able to do many things, but as a lone developer with a family to feed, I can't afford to spend time on features that no one cares about. I have to try to isolate the things that people want. This is serious food and rent to me. How can I get this kind of info so I can make my project successful?

    How can I go about/what is the best way of estimating what kind of server resources I will require at the launch of a new project. Let's say for instance I'd gathered 10k users email addresses that opted-in to be informed when we launch. I didn't really want to go for a cloud solution at the moment. Should I just get a reasonably-specced dedicated server and go from there, or should I be looking at services like Amazon EC2? Or should I start out with EC2 for the fully-flexible resources, then once things stabilize I'll be able to sort a fixed hosting deal that is adequate elsewhere? Sub-question: What's a good way of estimating what load a particular application will place on the server per user?

  • Collapsible menu and amount of links in a web page

    One of my pages contain three levels of a collapsible menu (JS + CSS from mycssmenu.com). There are a dozen first level items displayed to users, each one with various second level items, and finally a lot of third level items, each one containing a related link. This generates a lot of internal links (300+). Because of SEO should I change the way the collapsible menu is displayed to reduce link amount? What do you suggest? I would like to avoid users to have to open a new page just to only see what are third level items and eventually follow one of its links.
