I am an experienced C/C++/C# programmer who has just gotten into VB.NET. I generally use CType (and CInt, CBool, CStr) for casts because it is less characters and was the first way of casting which I was exposed to, but I am aware of DirectCast and TryCast as well.
Simply, are there any differences (effect of cast, performance, etc.) between DirectCast and CType? I understand the idea of TryCast.

What's the best way to approach using Mercurial (HG) programmatically from C#?
I will be creating HG repositories, committing, and using other default HG functions. Are there are open-source .NET libraries that would allow me to do this?
Thanks in advance.
I'm not getting to hang of the entire FormAuthentication thing. Is there an up-to-date tutorial somewhere? I found this one, but it a bit old and the syntax doesn't match recent Asp.Net MVC.
In order to return a value from a VB.NET function one can assign a value to the "Functions Name" or use "return value."
I sometimes see these inter-mixed in the same function. Personally, I prefer the return.
My question is, what is the internal difference, if any, between the two?
i am working in asp.net mvc . i am using partial views but when i clicked on particular link i got the following error
500 Internal Server Error
any one know the reson thanks
I'm rendering a DropDownList in my Visual Studio 2005 ASP.NET code behind page out to an HtmlTextWriter, but when I try to add the SelectedIndexChanged event that doesn't get rendered.
Any ideas? Is this even possible?
Hello,
this should be pretty simple but I don't get it. How can I draw a single point in .Net? If I use g.DrawLine(Black,0,0,0,0) nothing is drawn and if I use g.DrawLine(Black,0,0,1,0) a line with 2 dots is used. The same happens with g.DrawRectangle. This has me intrigued.
Thanks in advance.
In my asp.net web application,I use IFrames to show another page inside one page. But the problem is that the page load event of the embedded page in the IFrame is not firing when the Iframe is shown by clicking on a button in the parent page.I use the IFrame's visibility is true/false to show or hide the Iframe.I am confused what is happening there. Can somebody solve my problem....
Assume you are taking over a legacy .NET app. pre - 3.0
What are the top 5 diagnostic measures, profiling or otherwise that you would employ to assess the health of the application?
I am looking for ways to store data in a windows form application in .NET.
I want to make the input data of a system persistent, so when I close my program and open it again, the data is retrieved.
Which ways are of doing this besides creating a linked database?
Examples are gladly appreciated

I have an ASP.NET page which utilizes jQuery for an autocomplete-type scenario. The jQuery tucks the actual selected values into a hidden field it creates on the fly, but for some reason I cannot get the value of that standard HTML field on postback by calling Request.Form["HiddenFieldName"]. I can see it by ordinal in the Request.Form object, but if I add/remove controls it will break. Any suggestions?
i need to add this namespce to app c# file.
using System.Data;
so any way to add automaticlly to new created page in c#.net.
so i don't required to add this name space to new pages.
I know that whenever you add/remove/modify any file in the "App_Code", "App_GlobalResources", and "bin" directories that ASP.NET will recompile and essentially restart the application.
My question is : "What happens to any threads currently executing durring the change?"
Do they finish? Is a Thread.Abort Exception thrown?
What happens if the application itself makes a change in any of those directories?
I am building a search page in asp.net 3.5. Search takes a bit of time (few seconds to few minutes). Current I use AsyncMethodCaller to call Search method. AsyncMethodCaller method stores search results in Session. I user Ajax timer to check if Search method finished and then display results.
What would be the best way to implement this scenario?
Can anybody recommend some quality ASP.NET hosting providers that allow you to multiple domains without making you use a "reseller" account or purchase multiple accounts. I really only need email accounts for one of the domains.
I'm looking for something about $20 to $45 USD.

I have a Perl script that calls aspnet_compiler.exe to compile a large ASP.NET website. The problem is that it takes very long to run. Is there any way to compile just a single .aspx file from the command line? (I think that would suit the needs of my script) It seems that all aspnet_compiler.exe can do is compile at a directory level.
I want to use code access security and add code modify group. but I dont see .NET Configuration Tool in the administrator tools.

Has there been any change in page life cycle event in asp.net 3.5(I mean some addition or any modification in the exisitng one)?
Sorry to ask in this way as because recently in an interview I have been asked by an interviewer. I dare to ask him the answer for this even after the interview!
If the asnwer is yes, kindly give some detailing about that; even a tutorial link will also do if no explicit explanation.
Thanks
I know this is a terrible way of doing things, but it's for an internal app where security is no issue.
Basically, an old group created a php page with a drop down and this drop down is populated with entries from a DB. The DB owner is currently absent and for the sake of time, I would just need something that turns the entries in that drop down, always at the same url with the same ID every load into a List. Is there a quick, painless way to do this in .NET?
