• MEncoder Install on Ubuntu

  I am writing this after checking almost all the posts but none of those solved my problem. I am trying to install mencoder to process some videos but there are strange errors coming. For examples when I try sudo apt-get install mencoder the following errors comes out: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. • MASM Syntax Highlighting in C++ for Visual Studio 2010

  So, I had Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, and everything was great. However, I was confused, thought I wanted MASM, and installed the SDK. This causes strange problems for syntax highlighting. When I'm editing a C/C++ file, for instance, a lot of words (e.g., "data", "add", "sub", "mul", "div", "eax", etc.) are highlighted. At first, I thought I'd just learn to live with it, but it has gotten annoying. I could find nothing online, so, I deleted the MASM folder completely (method of uninstallation), uninstalled Visual Studio, and then installed it again. I firedit up, and the problem persists. • How do internal smtp servers send mail to internal mail servers on the network?

  We have upgraded our internal corporate email server and the IP address has changed internal to our network. A second email server is used for sending bulk jobs for a mailing list service that we offer. Since the switch of the internal corporate server IP we have been seeing problems when the bulk email server is trying to send email to our own domain. The log shows that it is still trying to hit the old corporate server instead of the new one. I have looked through all settings for the bulk email software and see nothing set there to send to internal mail servers, and I do not recall doing anything special to get this working when setup a couple years ago. Is there a setting in Win2003 or on the network that enables the mapping of MX record external IPs to internal IPs so mail gets routed correctly?

• NAS disk - problem with accessing SAMBA

  Hello I have a NAS disk running on some version of Linux. The disk is located in local network (5 PC running XP or Vista, all connected to Linksys Router). I have problems accessing NAS resources through SAMBA. The 1st issue is that the NAS is not accessible through hostname (even if it is configured), 2nd point is that it is mostly not accessible through IP manner (\IP_OF_NAS). Rest of services (FTP, HTTP access) works flawlessly. I connected the NAS to my home network (only 1 WinXP and Linsys router) and the NAS is working fine - SAMBA access together with hostname recognition works perfectly. I wonder this is an issue with WINS? Could anybody help? Regards

• Ubuntu 12.04 problem with E160 huawei - can't detect the device and freezing system

  I have just installed 12.04 and plugged in E160 and nothing happened - modem doesn't mount. I have found this solution : Ubuntu does not mount some Huawei devices due to bugs, problems etc. See if these work: 1st option: Connect the USB modem. • MSSQL:Ultimate configuration for rebuilding indexes+statistics

  My database is growing slower even though I have a bunch of indexes setup. Yesterday I figured out that I need to setup a maintenance plan to build the indexes etc. So my question is what's the ultimate configuration for this? Do I need All: "Rebuild idex task", "Reorganize index task" and "update statistics task". Anything else I need to setup. Shrink database? (Today, the only maintenance plans I have is backup) Does it matter in what order I run them? Any configuration options I should be aware of? I've read of problems with log growing wild, how do I fix that? My transaction log is quite small and is usually a problem for me. -

• Windows 7 - Move location of Eventlog

  I am having a particular nasty problem of my main system drive 'disappearing' all of the sudden while the system is running. The vendor somewhat knows about this but has not managed to fix it completely over multiple fw iterations. Problems I have with the support is that I cannot provide any particular system log files/entries to further analyse what might have been going on because, well - windows cannot write to its 'lost' drive before bsod'ing. Is there any way to configure where Windows 7 stores its event logs so that I could specify a second physical hdd?

• SSIS Dashboard v0.4

  Following the post on SSISDB script on Gist, I’ve been working on a HTML5 SSIS Dashboard, in order to have a nice looking, user friendly and, most of all, useful, SSIS Dashboard. Since this is a “spare-time” project, I’ve decided to develop it using Python since it’s THE data language (R aside), it’s a beautiful & powerful, well established and well documented and with a rich ecosystem around. Plus it has full support in Visual Studio, through the amazing Python Tools For Visual Studio plugin, I decided also to use Flask, a very good micro-framework to create websites, and use the SB Admin 2.0 Bootstrap admin template, since I’m all but a Web Designer. The result is here: https://github.com/yorek/ssis-dashboard and I can say I’m pretty satisfied with the work done so far (I’ve worked on it for probably less than 24 hours). Though there’s some features I’d like to add in t future (historical execution time, some charts, connection with AzureML to do prediction on expected execution times) it’s already usable. Of course I’ve tested it only on my development machine, so check twice before putting it in production but, give the fact that, virtually, there is not installation needed (you only need to install Python), and that all queries are based on standard SSISDB objects, I expect no big problems. If you want to test, contribute and/or give feedback please fell free to do it…I would really love to see this little project become a community project! Enjoy!

• Ubuntu won't boot after initializing the Build Environment for Android

  My laptop worked perfectly util I initialized the build environment for Android. The GUI won't start. It looks like some kinds of graphics card problems. I tried to fix it but after trying a lot of solutions on the internet nothing worked. (I only know basic linux stuffs.) I've already reinstalled the OS. However, I still want to build the Android from source. Any idea what might cause the problem? any workaround? • Compress, enctypt and upload a directory to an FTP server in Linux

  I want to acomplish something rather simple (at least it would seem to be): Compress a directory Encrypt the compressed file Upload the compressed & encrypted file via FTP I also want to acomplish this in an automated fashion on Linux server. TrueCrypt is not really an option as it seems it can't complress a single file, instead you have to make a volume that you mount and move the files into. This question answers how to do the the upload and I know how to compress a directory. It is just the encryption that's giving me problems.

• Management Reporter Installation – Lessons Learned

  After successfully completing several installations of Management Reporter this year, I wanted to share a few lessons learned that should help you. First, you will want to make sure that you install Management Reporter under a domain account as opposed to a local system or network service account. Management Reporter gives you the option to install under these accounts, but it is a be a best practice approach to use a domain account. Upon installation of Management Report, you will want to make sure that Directory Browsing is enabled within the IIS server of your site or you will have problems when you go to use Management Reporter. By default, it will be disabled in Server 2008 R2 and you will need to make the setting change under the Actions pane shown below. Lastly, you will want to make sure that SQL Server is running under a domain account. I have had multiple situations where reports have been stuck in the Queued status rather than Processing status of Management Reporter. After reviewing resolution 5 of KB 2298248, it was determined that running SQL Server under a domain account is the way to go.

• Mouse clicks stop working sometimes

  I am having a serious issue with my mouse in which it will randomly not be able to click or cause other problems. Here is the breakdown: Sometimes, I can no longer left-click on many of my windows/taskbar (in order to focus them). Even though I can still left click on my desktop icons or the currently active window, I cannot focus any of the others. Other times, when I have a browser open, I will hit to go back one page and it will automatically go forward one page. I know it's a mouse issue because this behavior stops when I unplug the mouse. Things will be fine when I plug the mouse back in, but eventually the behavior starts up again. My mouse is a Razer Diamondback 3G and I am running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. Any ideas?

• Is there a way of disabled byte-range requests in Apache?

  I have a web page with a link to a PDF file (target="_blank"). If I click the link, the PDF reader just shows a grey screen within the Firefox browser. If I copy that link and manually open it in a new tab, the PDF will display correctly, and subsequent requests made by clicking the original link now work, suggesting that the problem occurs when loading the file into the cache. It appears as though the Adobe PDF reader plugin is making byte-range requests (I see lots of 206 responses) and I suspect that this may be the cause of the issue. I am running an Apache webserver. Has anyone had problems with Apache and Adobe's byte-range requests? Are there any workarounds? Perhaps a way of configuring Apache to ignore byte-range requests on PDFs?

• Outlook 2007 - Monospace/preformatted quickstyle

  In Outlook 2003 I could set a block of text as preformatted, which was mighty handing for emailing code snippets. This prevented line wrapping, and specified that a monospace font be used in whatever email client recieved my email. Now in Outlook 2007, there are at least three problems: 'Plain Text' style (apparently the closest thing to 'preformatted' as a style) is buried beneath about five clicks, and adding it to the quick style gallery and saving the gallery seems to be forgotten (bug?) It uses some fancy Microsoft font 'Consolas' that is not on some of my coworkers machines that use thunderbird It does not appear that there is any way to get it flagged as a monospace font so that other email clients will display it properly. Does anybody know how to quickly set text to 'preformatted' as Outlook 2003, meaning A) use a monospace font B) flag it as monospace for other clients C) avoid hard line breaks?

• Word 2007 cannot open old doc files anymore

  Since last week I am unable to open old doc files with Microsoft Word 2007. Whenever I try that I first get a warning about converters being a security issue. (I can disable that in the registry). After accepting (or disabling) this warning, however, I just get the following error message: Unglütiger Datentyp (Word 6.0/95 für Windows & Macintosh which means in English: Invalid document type (Word 6.0/95 for Windows & Macintosh I tried to goolge both the German and the translated error message but did not find anything related. The files in question can be opened by other users for the windows terminal server without problems.

• Iphone/Android app – chatroom development – what framework & hosting needs?

  I have some experience regarding IPhone and Android development but I am now struggling to solve a new class of problem: apps that involve a client/server chatroom feature. That is, an app when people can exchange text over the internet, and without having the app to constantly “pull” content from the server. So that problem can’t be solved with a normal php/mysql website, there must be some kind of application running on a server that is able to send message from the server to the phone, rather than having the phone to check for new messages every 10 seconds… So I’m looking for ways to solve the different problems here: What framework should I use on the two sides (phone / server)? It should be some kind of library that doesn’t prevent me to write paid apps. It should also be possible to have the same server for the Iphone and android version of the app. What server / hosting solution do I need with what sort of features, I just have no experience regarding server application that can handle and initiate multiple connections and are hosted on hardware that is always online I tried to find resources online but couldn’t so far, either the libraries had the wrong kind of license/language or I just didn’t understand… Sometimes there were nice tutorial but for different needs such as peer2peer chat over local network… Same with the server and the hosting problem, not sure where to start really, I’m calling for help and I promise I will complete this page with notes about the experience I will get :-) Obviously the ideal would be to find a tutorial I missed that include client code, server code and a free scalable server… That being said, If I see something as good, it probably means that I have eaten the wrong kind of mushroom again… So, failing that, any pointer which might help me toward that quest, would be greatly appreciated. • Roadmap for Thinktecture IdentityServer

  I got asked today if I could publish a roadmap for thinktecture IdentityServer (idrsv in short). Well – I got a lot of feedback after B1 and one of the biggest points here was the data access layer. So I made two changes: I moved to configuration database access code to EF 4.1 code first. That makes it much easier to change the underlying database. So it is now just a matter of changing the connection string to use real SQL Server instead of SQL Compact. Important when you plan to do scale out. I included the ASP.NET Universal Providers in the download. This adds official support for SQL Azure, SQL Server and SQL Compact for the membership, roles and profile features. Unfortunately the Universal Provider use a different schema than the original ASP.NET providers (that sucks btw!) – so I made them optional. If you want to use them go to web.config and uncomment the new provider. Then there are some other small changes: The relying party registration entries now have added fields to add extra data that you want to couple with the RP. One use case could be to give the UI a hint how the login experience should look like per RP. This allows to have a different look and feel for different relying parties. I also included a small helper API that you can use to retrieve the RP record based on the incoming WS-Federation query string. WS-Federation single sign out is now conforming to the spec. I made certificate based endpoint identities for SSL endpoints optional. This caused some problems with configuration and versioning of existing clients. I hope I can release the RC in the next days. If there are no major issues, there will be RTM very soon!

• Introducing Programming To a Mathematician

  I currently am a programmer, I'm almost 16 years of age and have pretty much narrowed my careers down to something involving a Computer Science degree or Electrical Engineering degree (I know they are quite different but this question is about my friend) but my friend isn't so sure. He is very interested in maths and is very good at it and I think he would enjoy programming but he isn't willing to try it (edit he is willing to try but has never done before). Can anyone give me an suggestions for a language or tool that he could dabble in programming (at a reasonably basic level I assume) to solve maths problems or involve some kind of maths. As I say he enjoys maths a lot but I think he would enjoy programming, the problem is I don't want him to be put off by the stuff that isn't relevant at introductory levels such as memory allocation et al. I know that is very important but the point is that I want him to learn a bit of programming with maths then hopefully if he is interested enough he can start learning programming as programming. Thanks in advance, ell. Edit: Its not that he's completely uninterested - more that he hasn't actively explored the area before, maybe because he isn't informed about it. I wouldn't want to force him to do something he doesn't want to, I see this as more of a little push so that he can learn about programming. If he doesn't like it - fair enough, I can't control that and don't want to but if he turns out to enjoy it - this push will have been the right thing.

• How to use robocopy to move Users folder from partition c to d on Windows 7?

  I just tried to copy my Users folder from partition C to partition D using the method mentioned in this post. Unfortunately I encountered two problems: When using the command robocopy c:\Users d:\Users /mir /xj /copyall, robocopy says that it can't find the file C:\Users\, although it exists. When using the command robocopy x:\Users d:\Users /mir /xj /copyall, robocopy says that it cannot find the path d:\Users\Administrator\Application Data, error code <0x00000003>. I started the command line mode of my Windows 7 installation disk (repair mode). Does anybody know what the reasons for these errors might be?

• Stuck in power saving mode

  I've got an LG monitor I tried attaching to my laptop for dual monitor goodness and it worked fine but when I tried attaching it back to the desktop it stuck in "Power Saving mode" and wouldn't go away. The CPU's starting up but nothing happens with the monitor. I try attaching it back to the laptop and it works fine again. I don't understand what could have happened. For reference, the laptop I'm using is an HP laptop with nVidia GT240M video card running on an i7 processor while the desktop runs on a Dual Core processor with an nVidia 9400GT video card. I've never had problems like these with other monitors I've attached my pc to. Anyone got any ideas?

• Asus AT3-IONT & Win XP [closed]

  Hello! I'm trying to install Windows XP on my nettop (Asus AT3-IONT motherboard). There is a problem - when the progress comes to partition selection, it sees all the partitions on the hard drive, but when I'm selecting any partition, it says that it's not compatible with Windows XP. Windows 7 was installed without any problems, but XP and 2003 R2 have this problem. How can I solve it? P.S. I already have Windows 7, I need exactly XP or 2003 for my work. Thanks.

• A specific user is unable to log in to vsftpd

  I am setting up a new user let his name be ftpguy. He has access to only one directory /var/www/xxx. I have already chowned the directory so that he has write and read privileges. The user is also unable to login via ssh as I have disabled that by changing his shell to /sbin/nologin. Also, in vsftpd config, I have enabled the chroot_local_user. Now whenever I log in from ftp, i get an auth error. Connect socket #1008 to xxxxxxxx, port 21... 220 Welcome to blah FTP service. USER ftpguy 331 Please specify the password. PASS ********** 530 Login incorrect. I changed the password to something different several times, using the passwd command, nothing happens, i still the above error. However I am able to log in with my ssh creditals to my ftp server without any problems.(I do not use a key).
