• Lazy non-modifiable list in Google Collections

  I was looking for a decent implementation of a generic lazy non-modifiable list implementation to wrap my search result entries. The unmodifiable part of the task is easy as it can be achieved by Collections.unmodifiableList() so I only need to sort out the the lazy part. Surprisingly, google-collections doesn't have anything to offer; while LazyList from Apache Commons Collections does not support generics. I have found an attempt to build something on top of google-collections but it seems to be incomplete (e.g. does not support size()), outdated (does not compile with 1.0 final) and requiring some external classes, but could be used as a good starting point to build my own class. Is anybody aware of any good implementation of a LazyList? If not, which option do you think is better: write my own implementation, based on google-collections ForwardingList, similar to what Peter Maas did; write my own wrapper around Commons Collections LazyList (the wrapper would only add generics so I don't have to cast everywhere but only in the wrapper itself); just write something on top of java.util.AbstractList; Any other suggestions are welcome.

• Categories of tags

  I'm starting a pro bono project that is the web interface to the world's largest collection of lute music and it's a challenging collection from several points of view. The pieces are largely from 1400 to 1600, but they range from the mid-1200's to present day. Needless to say, there is tremendous variability in how the pieces are categorized and who they are attributed to. It is obvious that any sort of rigid, DB-enforced hierarchy isn't going to work with this collection, so my thoughts turn to tags. But not all tags are the same. I'll have tags that represent a person/role (composer, translator, entabulator, etc.), tags that represent the instrument(s) the piece in written for, and tags that represent how the piece has been classified by any one of half a dozen different classification systems used over the centuries. We will be using a semi-controlled tag vocabulary to prevent runaway tag proliferation (e.g. del.icio.us), but I want to treat the tags as belonging to different groups. People tags should not be offered when the editor is doing instrument tagging, etc. Has anyone done something like this? I have several ways I can think of to do it, but if there is an existing system that is well-done it would save me time implementing/debugging. • @font-face fonts only work on their own domain

  I am trying to create a type of font repository for use on my websites, so that I can call to any font in the repository in my css without any other set-up. To do this I created a subdomain on which I placed folders for each font in the repository that contained the various file types for each font. I also placed a css file called font-face.css on the root of the subdomain and filled it with @font-face declarations for each of the fonts, the fonts a linked with an absolute link so that they can be used from anywhere. My issue is that it seems that I can only use the fonts on that subdomain where they are located, on my other sites the font does not show. Using firebug I determined that the font-face.css file was successfully being linked to and loaded. So why does the font not correctly load? Is there protection on the font files or something? I am using all fonts that I should be allowed to do this with, so I don't see why this is occurring. Maybe it is an apache issue, but I can download the font just fine when I link to it. Oh, and just to clarify, I am not violating any copyrights by setting this up, all the fonts I am using are licensed to allow this sort of thing. I would however like to set up a way that only I can have access to this repository of fonts but that's another project.

• Daily, Weekly and Monthly Page View Counter

  I'm building a website with user generated content. On the home page I want to show a list of all created items, and I want to be able to sort them by a view counter. That's sound easy, but I want multiple counters. I want to know which was the most visited item in the last day, last week or last months or overall. My first Idea was to create 4 counter columns in the item's DB-Table. One for each of daily, weekly, monthly and overall, and the create a cron job, that clears the daily counter every 24 hours, the weekly counter every 7 days and so on. But my problem with this is, what happens if I want to know which was the most viewed item of the week, just after the weekly counter got cleared? What I need is an efficient way to create a continous counter, which got reduced for every page view that is too old, and increased for every new page view. Right now I'm thinking of a solution with the redis server, but I have no solution yet. I'm just looking for a general idea here, but FYI I'm developing this application in Ruby on Rails.

• Help with php code - need to add condition to make one link https

  Hi, I have a wordpress blog and I need to make one of the pages secure. I have been told to make the link to that page point to https://claimpage.html as opposed to http://claimpage.html. The problem is I don't actually create the menu that links the user to the individual pages. This is done automatically by the code in the background. I think I need to put in some sort of an IF statement, saying, if the title of the page is "claim now" then use https otherwise use http. • Parsing RSS2 In PHP

  I'm trying to get content from an RSS2 feed from one of my sites and use it in another site. The feed is here. Changing $node->getElementsByTagName('description')->item(0)->nodeValue to $node->getElementsByTagName('content')->item(0)->nodeValue gives me nothing, and content:encoded is no better. Can someone please point me in the right direction to solving this? Thanks!

  I'm trying to use AutoMapper to flatten multiple levels of arrays. Consider the following source classes: class X { public string A { get; set; } public Y[] B { get; set; } } class Y { public string C { get; set; } public Z[] D { get; set; } } class Z { public string E { get; set; } public string F { get; set; } } And the following destination: class Destination { public string A { get; set; } public string C { get; set; } public string E { get; set; } public string F { get; set; } } What I'd like to be able to do is get a List from one or more X, e.g.: Mapper.Map<IEnumerable<X>, IEnumerable<Destination>>(arrayOfX); I'm unable to figure out what sort of mapping configuration to use to achieve this. MapFrom seems like the way to go for 1:1 compositions, but doesn't seem to be able to handle the array (or other enumerable) unless I use AutoMapper's destination naming convention. Any insights on how to achieve this?

• Top 10 collection completion - a monster in-query formula in MySQL?

  I've got the following tables: User Basic Data (unique) [userid] [name] [etc] User Collection (one to one) [userid] [game] User Recorded Plays (many to many) [userid] [game] [scenario] [etc] Game Basic Data (unique) [game] [total_scenarios] I would like to output a table that shows the collection play completion percentage for the Top 10 users in descending order of %: Output Table [userid] [collection_completion] 3 95% 1 81% 24 68% etc etc In my mind, the calculation sequence for ONE USER is: grab user's total owned scenarios from User Collection joined with Game Basic Data and COUNT(gbd.total_scenarios) grab all recorded plays by COUNT(DISTINCT scenario) for that user Divide all recorded plays by total owned scenarios So that's 2 queries and a little PHP massage at the end. For a list of users sorted by completion percentage things get a little more complicated. I figure I could grab all users' collection totals in one query, and all users recorded plays in another, and then do the calcs and sort the final array in PHP, but it seems like overkill to potentially be doing all that for 1000+ users when I only ever want the Top 10. Is there a wicked monster query in MySQL that could do all that and LIMIT 10? Or is sticking with PHP handling the bulk of the work the way to go in this case?

• Tips on managing dependencies for a release?

  Our system comprises many .NET websites, class libraries, and a MSSQL database. We use SVN for source control and TeamCity to automatically build to a Test server. Our team is normally working on 4 or 5 projects at a time. We try to lump many changes into a largish rollout every 2-4 weeks. My problem is with keeping track of all the dependencies for a rollout. Example: Website A cannot go live until we've rolled out Branch X of Class library B, built in turn against the Trunk of Class library C, which needs Config Updates Y and Z and Database Update D, which needs Migration Script E... It gets even more complex - like making sure each developer's project is actually compatible with the others and are building against the same versions. Yes, this is a management issue as much as a technical issue. Currently our non-optimal solution is: a whiteboard listing features that haven't gone live yet relying on our memory and intuition when planning the rollout, until we're pretty sure we've thought of everything... a dry-run on our Staging environment. It's a good indication but we're often not sure if Staging is 100% in sync with Live - part of the problem I'm hoping to solve. some amount of winging it on rollout day. So far so good, minus a few close calls. But as our system grows, I'd like a more scientific release management system allowing for more flexibility, like being able to roll out a single change or bugfix on it's own, safe in the knowledge that it won't break anything else. I'm guessing the best solution involves some sort of version numbering system, and perhaps using a project management tool. We're a start-up, so we're not too hot on religiously sticking to rigid processes, but we're happy to start, providing it doesn't add more overhead than it's worth. I'd love to hear advice from other teams who have solved this problem.

  What it does (sort of)... or is meant to, the script reads from a csv file that contains information on sound files and create a play list exactly 60 minutes long. An example csv, contains: their title, duration (in seconds), minium total time to be played (in minutes) An example is: Soundfoo,120,10 Soundbar,30,6 Sounddev,60,20 Soundrandom,15,8 The script works out the minimum instances of plays, take 'Soundfoo' for example, the length of each sample is 120 seconds and the minimum time to be played is 10 minutes, so basic maths 10*60/120 gives the number of instances the song is to be played, in this case 5. It is meant to take minimum number of instances and spread out equally from each other; so there will never be a period where for example Soundbar is played twice in a row. Then if the minium instances of each song has been used, and there is still time with in the 60 min, how is it possible to tell it to go back and fill the time by selecting each sound and including it till the 60 min is filled while remaining sparsely populated. Heres the issue(s)! The script fails to calculate the actual time require to play all the sounds in a file and the total time of the playlist, the thing is tho it doesn't get it wrong all the time maybe 3/5 times, even if I run it on the same csv file it will give me different answers.   I'm going through the 99 Haskell problems to build my proficiency with the language. On problem 7 ("Flatten a nested list structure"), I found myself wanting to define a conditional behavior based on the type of argument passed to a function. That is, since *Main> :t 1 1 :: (Num t) => t *Main> :t [1,2] [1,2] :: (Num t) => [t] *Main> :t [[1],[2]] [[1],[2]] :: (Num t) => [[t]] (i.e. lists nested at different levels have different data types) it seems like I should be able to write a function that can read the type of the argument, and then behave accordingly. My first attempt was along these lines: listflatten l = do if (:t l) /= ((Num t) => [t]) then listflatten (foldl (++) [] l) else id l But when I try to do that, Haskell returns a parse error. Is Haskell flexible enough to allow this sort of type manipulation, do I need to find another way?

• Self-referencing tables in Linq2Sql

  Hi, I've seen a lot of questions on self-referencing tables in Linq2Sql and how to eagerly load all child records for a particular root object. I've implemented a temporary solution by accessing all underlying properties, but you can see that this doesn't do the performance any good. The thing is though, that all records are correlated with each-other using a correlation GUID. Example below: RootElement - Id: 1 - ParentId: null - CorrelationId: 4D68E512-4B55-44f4-BA5A-174B630A03DD ChildElement1 - Id: 2 - ParentId: 1 - CorrelationId: 4D68E512-4B55-44f4-BA5A-174B630A03DD ChildElement2 - Id: 3 - ParentId: 2 - CorrelationId: 4D68E512-4B55-44f4-BA5A-174B630A03DD ChildElement1 - Id: 4 - ParentId: 2 - CorrelationId: 4D68E512-4B55-44f4-BA5A-174B630A03DD In my case, I do have access to the correlationId, so I can retrieve all of my records by performing the following query: from element in db.Elements where element.CorrelationId == '4D68E512-4B55-44f4-BA5A-174B630A03DD' select element; But, of course, I want these elements associated with each other by executing this query: from element in db.Elements where element.CorrelationId == '4D68E512-4B55-44f4-BA5A-174B630A03DD' && element.ParentId == null select element; My question is: is it possible to combine the results the first query as some sort of 'caching mechanism' for the query where I get the root element? • CakePHP form $options['options']

  Hey! Total CakePHP noob here. This is sort of a two fold question. In a view that is used for adding user objects I would like to use a drop down (selection) field in the form. Each user belongs to a group so when I add a user I want a drop down that contains all of the groups that the user could possibly join. Currently the group_id field is a textfield. I know how to force it to be a selection field, but I don't know how to populate the selection with the names of the groups programmatically. The Current method: echo $form->input('group_id', array( '1' => 'NameOfGroup1', '2' => 'NameOfGroup2', '3' => 'NameOfGroup3') ); I want to generate the options array programmatically though. echo $form->input('group_id', $this->Group->find('list')); This doesn't work though. I get an error: Undefined property: View::$Group [APP/views/users/add.ctp, line 8] To me this means that I don't have access to the Group object from inside my user view. How can I accomplish this? Again, I want to do it programmatically so that it updates as I add groups or remove them.

• Having trouble coming up with a good architecture for a client/server application

  I am writing a remote backup service meant to support 1000+ users. It is going to use librsync to store reverse diffs (like rdiff-backup) and make data transfer efficient. My trouble is that I do not know the "best" way to implement the client/server model. I have thought of doing it like rsync/rdiff-backup do it by having the client open an SSH connection and running a server executable and communicating across pipes. Another alternative would be to write a server which would handle authentication and communicate with the client via SSL. The reason I have thought of this is that there is "state" information like how many backup jobs are setup, etc. that must be maintained. Another alternative that I have thought about is running a "web service" using Pylons or Django to handle the authentication, but I do not know how to bridge that the the "storage" side. Since I am using librsync, I cannot use "dumb" storage. Is there a way to pipe data through Pylons or Django to a server side handler that would do the rsync calculation? This seems to me like maybe a dumb question but I am sort of lost. Any tips or suggestions from more experienced developers would be extremely helpful.

Does this change make my web application nobbled in development and test environments? MySQL supports autoincrement on a primary key column but does support sequence objects, for example. Is there a cleaner way to implement this sort of 'only when in production mode' without loading up the domain class?

• Flex: embedded fonts not being applied correctly in Label and DataGrid

  Folks, I am observing a problem with how an embedded font is applied to certain Flex components, namely mx:Label and mx:DataGrid. I have a CSS that declares three variations on an embedded font as follows: @font-face { src:url("buttons.swf"); font-family: "Arial"; } @font-face { src:url("buttons.swf"); font-family: "Arial"; font-weight: bold; } @font-face { src:url("buttons.swf"); font-family: "Arial"; font-style: italic; } And in the style declaration for Label and DataGrid, I have: Label { fontFamily: "Arial"; fontSize: 11; fontFamily: LucidaSans; } and DataGrid { fontFamily: "Arial"; height: 16; } (I've snipped some stuff from both style rules, so if you think there's something that may be causing a conflict I can certainly post the entire definition. It's mostly color, line and padding stuff for the DataGrid.) The problem that is for both Label and cells in the DataGrid the text is being rendered as sort of a times new roman font. The headers in the DataGrid are fine, just the text in the cells is wonky. All other components use the correct font as defined in the CSS/SWF. Any ideas why this is happening?

I've tried adjusting them, but either an 'incompatible types' error is produced, or the array is seemingly blank } void print_struct(foo p){ printf(p.words); } I haven't made it successfully up to the print_struct stage, but I'm unsure whether p.words is the correct item to be calling. In the output, I would expect the function to return an array of x's. I apologize in advance if I've made some sort of grievous "I should already know this" C mistake. Thanks for your help.

• Thread Message Loop Hangs in Delphi

  Hello all. I have a simple Delphi program that I'm working on, in which I am attempting to use threading to separate the functionality of the program from its GUI, and to keep the GUI responsive during more lengthy tasks, etc. Basically, I have a 'controller' TThread, and a 'view' TForm. The view knows the controller's handle, which it uses to send the controller messages via PostThreadMessage. I have had no problem in the past using this sort of model for forms which are not the main form, but for some reason, when I attempt to use this model for the main form, the message loop of the thread just quits. Here is my code for the threads message loop: procedure TController.Execute; var Msg : TMsg; begin while not Terminated do begin if (Integer(GetMessage(Msg, hwnd(0), 0, 0)) = -1) then begin Synchronize(Terminate); end; TranslateMessage(Msg); DispatchMessage(Msg); case Msg.message of // ...call different methods based on message end; end; To set up the controller, I do this: Controller := TController.Create(true); // Create suspended Controller.FreeOnTerminate := True; Controller.Resume; For processing the main form's messages, I have tried using both Application.Run and the following loop (immediately after Controller.Resume) while not Application.Terminated do begin Application.ProcessMessages; end; I've run stuck here - any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Forcing file redirection on x64 for a 32-bit application

  The silent redirection of 64-bit system files to their 32-bit equivalents can be turned off and reverted with Wow64DisableWow64FsRedirection and Wow64RevertWow64FsRedirection. We use this for certain file identity checks in our application. The problem is that in performing some of theses tasks, we might call a framework or Windows API in a DLL that has not yet been loaded. If redirection is enabled at that time, the wrong version of the dll may be loaded resulting in a XXX is not a valid Win32 application error. I've identified the few API calls in question and what I'd like to do force the redirection on for the duration of that call then revert it back - just the opposite of the provided Win32 APIs. Unfortunately these calls do not provide any sort of WOW64 compatibility flag like some of the registry methods do. The obvious alternative is to use Wow64EnableWow64FsRedirection, pass TRUE for Wow64FsEanbledRedirection. However there are a variety of warnings about the use of this method and a note that it is not compatible with Disable/Revert combo methods that have replaced it. Is there a safe way to force redirection on for a give Win32 call? The docs state the redirection is thread specific so I've considered spinning up a new thread for the specific call with appropriate locks and waits, but I was hoping for a simpler solution.

• Twitter OAuth, Error when trying to POST direct message.

  So I am building a java script that is used in conjunction of my C++ application for sending direct messages to users. the script does the work of building the request that i send. When i send a request i receive "Incorrect signature" or "can not authenticate you" Does anyone see something i am missing or am doing wrong? I am continuing to investigate.
