• Using C# assemblies from VB6 code. Some issues.

  I have a C# assembly, which is regasmed, but is not in the GAC. In my VB6 code, I added a reference to the generated type library (the .tlb file). Then I instantiate the C# lib in my VB6 code. If I run it from the VB6 IDE, it does not work. The Set in the code below: Dim obj as MyCSharpNamespace.MyCSharpObject Set obj = New MyCSharpNamespace.MyCSharpObject causes this error: Automation error The system cannot find the file specified However, if I compile the VB6 project to an EXE and run it, it runs perfectly fine. I should add that all the VB6 project files (e.g. forms, modules, etc...) are in the same folder as the C# DLL and TLB. So why can't I run it from the IDE environment?

• How can I debug an unhandled exception in code called from a BackgroundWorker?

  I am running some import code asynchronously from a simple WinForms app using a BackgroundWorker object and its DoAsync() method. I had a problem where I didn't know that exceptions were being thrown and the thread was prematurely dying. I eventually discovered this, and now know when an exception is thrown after reading Unhandled exceptions in BackgroundWorker. However, I still have a problem while debugging. How do I debug this code? I guess I could run it in a test app that doesn't use a BackgrounWorker, but is there a way to debug this as is? If I step through the code that actually throws the exception, I just get kicked out the step-through when the exception occurs. Re-throwing the exception from the RunWorkerCompletedEventHandler naturally doesn't help much either. Any ideas!? Thanks in advance!

• Is there a strategy to back-port C# code?

  Hi all, I intend using the Argotic framework in support of a .Net Atom server. Unfortunately my target server (over which I have no control) only has .Net 1.1 - any the Argotic library is only in .Net 2 and 3.5. So, I now need to back-port the code to 1.1. Can anybody provide any strategic tips for this undertaking? I'm aware of the merits of using Unit Tests to verify the ported code (here). should I be looking for automated tools? should I just import the code into VS2003 .Net 1.1 project and work through the compiler warnings?   My native C++ COM component uses ATL. In DllRegisterServer() I call CComModule::RegisterServer(): STDAPI DllRegisterServer() { return _Module.RegisterServer(FALSE); // <<< notice FALSE here } FALSE is passed to indicate to not register the type library. ATL is available as sources, so I in fact compile the implementation of CComModule::RegisterServer(). Somewhere down the call stack there's an if statement: if( doRegisterTypeLibrary ) { //<< FALSE goes here // do some stuff, then call RegisterTypeLib() } The compiler sees all of the above code and so it can see that in fact the if condition is always false, yet when I inspect the linker progress messages I see that the reference to RegisterTypeLib() is still there, so the if statement is not eliminated. Can I make Visual C++ 9 perform better static analysis and actually see that some code is never called and not emit that code?

• Any way to surround code block with Curly Braces {} in VS2008?

  I always find myself needing to enclose a block of code in curly braces { }, but unfortunately that isn't included in the C# surround code snippets, which seems to be an oversight. I couldn't find anything on building your own surround snippets either (just other kinds of snippets). I am actually running Resharper too, but it doesn't seem to have this functionality either (or I haven't figured how to activate it). We have a coding standard of including even a single line of code after an if or else in curly braces, so if I could just make Resharper do that refactor automatically that would be even better!

  I'm using HTML5 geolocation to collect the users lat / long and I need to figure out what their postal code is as well. I have a database of all the lat / long for each postal code in the US & Canada. How can I write a query to find out what their postal code is? Below, is an example of how the data is structured in the 'zips' table. Country PostalCode Latitude Longitude USA 0051 40.813078 -73.046388 USA 00616 18.426456 -66.673779 I can't do a 'SELECT PostalCode FROM zips WHERE Latitude = user.lat AND Longitude = user.long'. I believe I need to find the nearest lat / long. Any suggestions on how I can write this?

• Php code not executing - dies out when trying to refer to member of static class - no error displaye

  I'm having some problems with this piece of code. I've included a class declaration and trying to create an object of that class but my code dies out. It doesn't seem to be an include issue as all the files are being included even the files called for inclusion within the class file itself. However the object is not created - I tried to put an echo statement in the __construct function but nothing it just doesn't run infact doesn't create the object and the code won't continue from there - plus no error is reported or displayed and I have error reporting set to E_ALL and display errors set to true WHats happening here :( =============EDIT SOrry I checked again the error is prior to teh object creation thing - it dies out when it tries to refer to a constant in a static class like so: $v = Zend_Oauth::REQUEST_SCHEME_HEADER; THis is the class or part of it - it has largely static functions its the Zend Oauth class: class Zend_Oauth { const REQUEST_SCHEME_HEADER = 'header'; const REQUEST_SCHEME_POSTBODY = 'postbody'; const REQUEST_SCHEME_QUERYSTRING = 'querystring'; // continued LIke I said no error is being reported at all :(

  I've created a link in Sharepoint using the Content Editor Web Part. My link uses html to open up an email with the fields to, cc, subject, and body filled out. However, in the cc section I need a number sign (#) for a mailbox. When I use the html code & #35;(minus the space) my entire code crumbles. Everything starting at the "&" disappears. However, just for kicks I tried & pound;(minus the space) and the code works for a european pound sign. Not sure what else to try. Any suggestions?

• Why is new showat attribute required when using code generation?

  When I generate code using T4 templates in Visual Studio 2010, I get the following error for each of my asp controls when I try to compile: Control "ddState" is missing required attribute "showat". I have never gotten this error in previous versions of .NET. Further, I don't get this error when I manually construct my pages either by dragging/dropping, nor do I get it when I type out the control text myself. When I generate code, I have to manually add showat="client" to my tag for the compiler to be happy. It was my understanding that I never had to explicitly specify this tag. The following: <asp:dropdownlist id="ddState" runat="server" showat="client" /> solves the problem. Why do I have to add this to generated code but not other times? (It's a VS-2010 webforms project, using VB, in case that makes a difference.)

  Hello, I've downloaded source of an opensource C++ project. It is a Linux project. As Visual Studio is my favorite IDE I want to use it to browse & study the code. I created an empty C++ project and now want to add the source code to Solution explorer. How can I add the directory structure to "Solution Explorer". Dropping the root folder of source code on the project in solution explorer is not working. Its just adding the files to the project but directory structure is lost. Is there any way to preserve the directory structure? I do not want to recreate the directory structure manually.

  Is there a tool that can determine .jar dependencies given a directory of .jar files and a separate directory of java source code? I need to generate Eclipse .classpath files based on an existing code base that doesn't have any dependencies defined. To be more specific, I've been given a large codebase consisting of a dozen or so J2EE-style projects and a single directory of jar files. My client uses a custom development and build framework that is just too arcane for me to use and get any real work done. The projects do not have any information about their dependencies, either between projects or to jar libraries. I would expect this tool would have to spin through each jar file, indexing the classes available in that file and then go through each file in the project source code tree and match up the dependencies, possibly writing out a .classpath file with the required jar files. I realize this is a rather simplistic view of the operation, as duplicate classes among the jar files and such might make things more difficult.

  There's an animation done in jQuery within jsfiddle. I do not have a website as of now to "implant" it and share the URL. I also can't give the jsfiddle. So how can I share my animation to the audience without showing the code? Does github or any other facility tools allow locking the code and showing the final product without having a website, yet I could get a URL for the audience to view it? I regret for the rookie-question in this context as I am still new to web stuff. EDIT: jsFiddle shows 3 code windows along the results :html, css, js. My requirement is to only show the results window to the audience and by all means to hide codes and leads via URL to the codes. Ideal solution demands a results to be shown and URL that is encrypted (at best).

• Having a problem with simple bool

  Hi guys, I've some really simple code that checks if my bool is == YES but it does not ever enter.   I am trying to append li elements coming from a php file with JQuery. Problem is that the html code needs to be seperately appended to different html IDs according to the key value. Unfortunately as I understood append() can only append correct html with all elements closed. Otherwise it will automatically close the tags. The following code will NOT work as dval contains code like <div><li class="some">Some value</li> and append() will make <div><li class="some">Some value</li></div> out of it. • When should I define an hash code function for my types?

  Is there any other reason for implementing an hash code function for my types other than allowing for good use of hash tables? Let's say I am designing some types that I intend to use internally. I know that types are "internal" to the system, and I also know I will never use those types in hash tables. In spite of this, I decide I will have to redefine the equals() method. Theory says I should also redefine the hash code method, but I can't see any reason why, in this case, I should do it. Can anyone point me out any other reason? • We have migrated VB6 code to C# in .net.

  The code was migrated using a third party tool. what ever the tool couldnt do, was done by the .net developers, so that all compile issues were fixed. My question is, for such migration activities, do we not bother running unit tests for the functions. Secondly, Could anyone suggest if we should use some tool in VSTS 10 to create a UML model of this code to minimize risks of issues that the client might find. How cumbersome is it. Are there any other suggestions for how quality migrated code can be delivered, in light of the fact that the functionality of the original VB6 application is unknown to us.
