• "Search Friendly" domain names

  We bought a few search friendly domain names for the CPA site that I manage. Each of the domains we bought has the name of a nearby city and the word cpa in front of, or behind the city name. The plan is to create a landing page for each of these domains with useful information about business filings, ect. specific to that city, as well as directions to our office from that city. The question is how to best utilize these new domains: Should each domain be set to a 301 redirect to mainsite.com/city ? Should each domain be it's own single page mini-site that links to mainsite.com ? What other options are there and what are the pros/cons? Remember the goal is to be more relevant in searches that use a nearby city name in their search for CPA/accounting services.

• Content theft - Where can I go from here?

  I am the webmaster of a very successful blog in a fairly small niche. Recently our success has started to bite us with people copying posts on the site without consent and trying to pass them off as their own work. Most sites stop as soon as you contact them but there is one in particular that is a blogger site which persists in passing off our content as their own. Every post we find we report to Google and they have been fairly good at taking the posts offline within a day or two but this isn't good enough or a long term solution. Given the nature of what is being blogged about after 24 hours the post is pretty much useless so I need some way to just stop them from taking our content? Any ideas? I don't want to go down the route of using a third party for people to get our RSS feed but I guess that is one option?

  I am hoping that someone may have experience with this, since the discountasp site is very lacking in straightforward answers. I am building a lightweight web application and have decided to have sql ce as the database for it. Two questions regarding this: Do i need to get an actual database hosted as well as the site, in order for it to work? Do you know if discountasp supports the use of sql ce (not with webmatrix or any cms builds, completely custom)? If they don't, do you have any experience/recommendations with getting this done?

• Is it possible to know impressions of other websites?

  Google Webmasters's dashboard gives you a big number which is called impressions, and by definition that I've seen in Google Analytics, it means the total number of times your site has been become eligible for SERPs. I just don't have an idea how to invest on this number, and how much its increase or decrease mean to me, because I can't compare it with other websites. I mean, if the impressions of say site a.com is 150,000, and mine is 50,000, then maybe I can confer that I need to triple my efforts to reach to a.com. But by seeing 50,000 alone I have no clue at all of how to interpret it. Is there any service or other way to know about the impressions Google gives to other sites?

• Disqus Comment Form Missing from Posts

  I decided to transition from IntenseDebate to Disqus for the blog. So I uninstalled ID via their uninstall process (you upload the template to them, they remove code, you reupload your new template onto the site). Then I went to install Disqus into the site through their Blogger widget method. The problem is that there is no comment form present on any of the blog posts' pages. For example, when you click on the 'Comments' link it jumps to #disqus-thread but there is no thread there. So is there any fix that I can do in order to make the comment form appear? I checked Disqus' knowledgebase for Blogger installation but as far as I can tell my template should be compatible.

• IIS throws HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable after installation of windows 8

  I was using IIS7.5 on Windows 7. Everything worked great. I then installed Windows 8. The shortcut link to my IIS7.5 stopped working, because all this was apparently moved to a windows.old folder. I had to install IIS8 via the 'turn Windows features on/off'. After I did that, I saw my sites again and everything looked ok, until I browsed to a site and got the error: Service Unavailable HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. I restarted IIS, restarted my PC, restarted the single site, but the problem remains. I also tried looking at the event logs. My eventlogs used to be in C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles\W3SVC4, but I don't see any log of today in there. Maybe that has changed with the new IIS as well? If so, where are the eventlogs now or where can I see where they should be saved?

• Paypal PDT and IPN , how does it work?

  PDT Payment Data Transfer is getting the transaction data of the purchase that was made on paypal site and you want to fetch that on your own site and display to the user. Also you may want to store it in your database for archive and tracking purposes. But I cannot exactly follow the documentation here What I am not getting is Once you have activated PDT, every time a buyer makes a website payment and is redirected to your return URL, a transaction token will be passed along as a "GET" variable to this return URL. In order to properly use PDT and display transaction details to your customer, you should fetch the transaction token, variable name "tx", and retreive transaction details from PayPal by constructing an HTTP POST to PayPal. Your POST should be sent to https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr. You must post the transaction token using the variable "tx" and the value of the transaction token previously received (e.g. "tx=transaction_token"), and the special identity token using the variable at and the value of your PDT identity token (e.g. "at=identity_token"). You will also need to append a variable named "cmd" with the value "_notify-synch", for example "cmd=_notify-synch", to the POST string. IPN I have setup Instant Payment Notification through setting according to this documentation. This is basically logging into your paypal account and enable IPN while specifying a url where the notification will be sent. This is used to complete an order so that the product can be shipped. What I did is setup a PHP page. I have created a table and whenever that page is called (or hit), it registers an entry in the table so I know a notification came from Paypal. But it does not work either. What am I really doing wrong? The first thing I want to trouble shoot though is when the buyer pays the amount, he is automatically redirected to my site. I have enabled this but automatic redirection just does not work. Instead he is shown the url as an option after payment confirmation is shown. Can someone guide my how the PDT process goes? Where do I make the request for PDT, is it along the very first request (Buy Now button) or it is sent later? Addition I found some good sampling code of how everything should work but it still does not work. I use this code http://officetrio.com/modules/free-php-paypal-ipn-script.php for IPN. I am using this for PDT. I have enabled the mod-expires and mod-headers modules seemingly correctly: $ apachectl -t -D DUMP_MODULES … expires_module (shared) headers_module (shared) … Settings include: ExpiresActive On ExpiresDefault "access plus 10 minutes" ExpiresByType application/xml "access plus 1 minute" Checking the headers of requests, I see that max-age is set correctly both for the generic case and for xml files (which are auto-generated, but mostly static). I would like to have different expiries for xml files in a directory (e.g. /data), so http://site/data/sample.xml expires 24 hours later. I enter the following in data/.htaccess: ExpiresByType application/xml "access plus 24 hours" Header set Cache-control "max-age=86400, public" but it seems that apache ignores this. How can I ensure apache2 uses the .htaccess directives? I can provide further information if requested.

  I have been creating a blog and now its almost done. I am thinking of adding fonts to it. I am curious if having more than 1 font in a website makes it look unprofessional? I understand that it is a personal opinion of a person how the site should look but my site is a blog so I want to consider how visitors might feel seeing multiple fonts on a website. I'm migrating a drupal site to wordpress and I was wondering what the concerns are with respect to preserving google rank, etc. while assuming the page content is somewhat similar. I've set up 301 redirects, and created a new site map, but the surrounding html / menus, etc are different. Is this considered a concern and are there a best practice for this kind of migration?

• Does having multiple URIs mapping to the same resource help SEO?

  Let's say I have a site with products that have tags, if each resource is available at GET '/products/tagged/:tag_list/:product_permalink' Could that be better for SEO than just one permalink? For example a product tagged "tea" and "coffee" would be available at GET '/products/tagged/tea/:product_permalink' GET '/products/tagged/coffee/:product_permalink' GET '/products/tagged/tea/coffee/:product_permalink' GET '/products/tagged/coffee/tea/:product_permalink' I would imagine that google would appreciate this because it gives multiple URIs with different levels of detail about the product, but I cant really be certain. Anyone have any direct knowledge on the topic? --EDIT-- As John Conde points, this is a horrible idea. What about having the links on my site link to a route such as GET '/products/tagged/:full_tag_list/:product_permalink', and then any time a user changes tags just have a HTTP moved permanently status to the new URL. Therefore duplicate URLs would be highly unlikely and mitigated by the proper response. Would this be better?

• Editable block: CMS or PHP script?

  I'm designing a Website for a restaurant. The site will be fairly static except for a 'specials' block which the client will need to update on a daily basis. I'm more of a designer/front-end developer so I was wondering if I was better off trying to make a block editable in PHP (a language I hardly ever deal with) or just create the website in a user-friendly CMS such as Wordpress (which I have some experience with) or Expression Engine (which I have no experience with but I'm told is a favorite in the design community)... certainly not Drupal, because even though I have theming experience with it, I think it would be a little overkill for just one editable block in a five-page site. I'm leaning towards an easy to use CMS because I'm really just not comfortable writing my own PHP especially since I guess a PHP solution would also require an authentication solution so only the client could get in to edit their info. Any insight would be appreciated!

  (I know this site doesn't give legal advice, but what I'm dealing here with isn't anything serious at all. Also, I apologize to JP for being annoying over this.) Someone found a game I made on the Internet, and expressed interest in buying it. We agreed upon a price, and, in the meantime, I removed the game's source from the Internet, just to be sure. Now, I'm wondering what to do next. These are the terms: He gets the game's source code, and only that, without the graphics (which weren't made by me). He gets the right to develop and sell the game. I get to keep the ownership of the original game, meaning that I can use it in my portfolio when applying for jobs, for example. The game gets to stay on its original site. But I am not sure how can I legally realize this. Which license can I use?

• Google analytics goal funnel visualization issues

  This is the goal funnel for checkout. Does anyone have any idea where the "/" is coming from? The cart page is at site: game on glove dot com (I don't want this stackoverflow page being indexed in google particularly well). Go to the site, click on the order button, make your selection, and click the button to enter the cart (it resolves to /Cart and /Shop-Cart). I believe I used the regular expression matching to match "cart". So why the "/" (I don't know what is causing the home page to reload when users are on the Cart page within a Colorbox lightbox where the only way back to home or "/" is to hit the exit button in the top right of the lightbox)? Here's my one guess for the former question but it doesn't seem likely: See the "check out with paypal" button? If you hovered over it, it does default to the home page which is what might be the "/"... but it really redirects the user to the paypal.com page so it shouldn't also load the home page.

• What is the ideal self hosted search engine?

  I have an internal (intranet) site that is comprised of several blogs and forums, hundreds of static pages, lots of PDF files and several other document types. Its been glued together loosely over the last couple of years and now its my job to maintain it. I'm looking for a search engine that I can host myself that ideally: Allows for searching the Blog / Forum databases directly if given the database information and tables to search. Handles most text documents (PDF/DOC/ODF) Is open source, or allows access to the source code once purchased It doesn't matter to me what language or platform it is written in. Normally, I'd just use Google site search, but that's not an option for an intranet.
