• I can play "test" sounds, but no other audio works

  I'm running Windows XP, and last night my PC was infected by a frustrating virus (one of those viruses that won't let you open virus checkers, etc). I finally killed it 2 hours later, but it involved some heavy duty anti-dote. One side effect is my audio is now gone. Except it's not entirely gone, because when I open the Realtek HD Audio Manager in the task bar, I can play all the "test" sounds. The speakers, the sound card, etc, are therefore working fine. But things like YouTube or Windows Media Player, there's no sound. I'm guessing there's a setting that needs to be reconfigured somewhere.. but where? Maybe relevant: One thing I did do last night was "play" with the system registry. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. SOLVED! The two hour battle with my computer virus resulted in my computer permanently thinking it was in Safe Mode, regardless of how it booted up. I was able to "fix" this by following the post by hsandler in this thread: http://www.petri.co.il/forums/showthread.php?t=23032&page=2 I then rebooted.. and let me tell you, the Windows Startup music has never sounded so sweet. Thanks to all, especially James, whose advice gave me a major clue as to what the problem was.

• I cannot access Windows Update at all

  I have been unable to access the Windows update site for a couple of weeks now. I just get a message saying "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and saying I have connection problems. Same thing is replicated with any other Microsoft site I try to access. The Automatic Updates also do not work. I can access every other wesbite I've surfed to. I've tried Googling the problem and based on what other site have suggested I have cleared my cache and temp files. I've scanning my hard drive with my antivirus in case I have a virus (nada). I've tried turning off my firewall and anti-virus (I run Zone Alarm). I've downloaded SpyBot and scanned my drive with that in case something was missed by Zone Alarm (again nada). Based on suggestions from the smart cookies on the Bad Science forum, I've used nslookup to check my translation isn't wonky (got all the info they said I should get). I've also tried navigating there directly using the IP address I was given (nope). I normally access the internet through a 3 mobile broadband connection, but have also tried connecting using a mate's wi-fi connection in case it was something on my mobile modem interferring. I run Windows XP SP3 with Internet Explorer 7 and Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite as my anti-virus/ firewall. Any suggestions?

Johnson served as the 29th Governor of New Mexico from 1995 to 2003, as a member of the Republican Party, and is known for his low-tax libertarian views and his strong emphasis on personal health and fitness. While a student at the University of New Mexico in 1974, Johnson sustained himself financially by working as a door-to-door handyman. In 1976 he founded Big J Enterprises, which grew from this one-person venture to become one of New Mexico's largest construction companies. He entered politics for the first time by running for Governor of New Mexico in 1994 on a fiscally conservative, low-tax, anti-crime platform. Johnson won the Republican Party of New Mexico's gubernatorial nomination, and defeated incumbent Democratic governor Bruce King by 50% to 40%. He cut the 10% annual growth in the budget: in part, due to his use of the gubernatorial veto 200 times during his first six months in office, which gained him the nickname "Governor Veto". Johnson sought re-election in 1998, winning by 55% to 45%. • software distribution and patch management

  How do software houses like Microsoft or anti-virus companies patch/update their software? Anti virus companies dont send the complete executable; only new virus signatures I suppose. Similarly, Ive noticed microsoft sends certain files to the '$NtUninstallKB......$' folder that it creates when it the windows update program runs. I suppose there is an installer in each such folder there that replaces only those dlls that need to be updated or fixed. Questions Is there a universal method for doing this or does each house employ their own methods? I dont want to re-send the entire application to each individual client. Suppose if only certain dlls need to be changed or maybe some more added, how should I go about planning my final compiled application. Do I need to look at separating my application into multiple assemblies? If yes, then is there some compilation method that is allows to pack specific classes into a particular dll? What I have put down here are my thoughts on the subject and I could be wrong. Could anyone throw some light on this please? I am looking at implementing such a deployment and patch management technique for the .net platform. Thanks for your time.

• What are some programming techniques for converting SD images to HD images

  I'm taking programming class and instructor loves to work with images so most of our assignments involve manipulating raw RGB image data. One of our assignments is to implement a standard image converter that converts SD images to HD images and vice versa. I always take advantage of these types of assignments to go a little beyond what we were asked to do, so I added a basic anti-aliasing process that uses the average pixel color of the 3x3 surrounding pixels to improve the converted image. While it helps a bit, the resulting image still doesn't look good, which is ok because it's not expected to for the assignment. I've learned that converting an SD to HD images has shown to be much harder than down sampling to SD from HD just because SD to HD effectively involves increasing resolution when it is not there. Obviously, it is hard to create pixels from nothing, but I'd like enhance my anti-aliasing to something that provides better results when upscaling an image. Most of the techniques I find and read on the internet are far beyond my level of image processing and programming. Can anybody suggest any better methods or processes to create good HD content from SD content that may be within my programming skill level? I know that's a difficult thing to gauge since you don't know me, but perhaps knowing that I can write c++ code to read in raw RGB data and upscale/downscale it with simple average-anti-aliasing will give you an idea. • Extracting email addresses in an html block in ruby/rails

  I am creating a parser that wards off against spamming and harvesting of emails from a block of text that comes from tinyMCE (so it may or may not have html tags in it) I've tried regexes and so far this has been successful: /\b[A-Z0-9._%+-]+@[A-Z0-9.-]+\.[A-Z]{2,4}\b/i problem is, i need to ignore all email addresses with mailto hrefs. for example: <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a> should only return the second email add. To get a background of what im doing, im reversing the email addresses in a block so the above example would look like this: <a href="mailto:[email protected]">moc.liam@tset</a> problem with my current regex is that it also replaces the one in href. Is there a way for me to do this with a single regex? Or do i have to check for one then the other? Is there a way for me to do this just by using gsub or do I have to use some nokogiri/hpricot magicks and whatnot to parse the mailtos? Thanks in advance! • network design to segregate public and staff

  My current setup has: a pfsense firewall with 4 NICs and potential for a 5th 1 48 port 3com switch, 1 24 port HP switch, willing to purchase more subnet 1) edge (Windows Server 2003 for vpn through routing and remote access) and subnet 2) LAN with one WS2003 domain controller/dns/wins etc., one WS2008 file server, one WS2003 running Vipre anti-virus and Time Limit Manager which controls client computer use, and about 50 pcs I am looking for a network design for separating clients and staff. I could do two totally isolated subnets, but I'm wondering if there is anything in between so that staff and clients could share some resources such as printers and anti-virus servers, staff could access client resources, but not vice versa. I guess what I'm asking is can you configure subnets and/or vlans like this: 1)edge for vpn 2)services available to all other internal networks 3)staff which can access services and clients 4)clients which can access services but not staff By access/non-access, I mean stronger separation than domain usernames and passwords.

  Hi guys, I am an ASP.NET developer, who has minimal knowledge in Server administration. I have a database hosted at Windows Server 2008. Today morning onwards it periodically stops working. The message given is something to the effect "The program is being shut down to prevent Data Execution Prevention error" Some other programs are also showing the behavior. I would like to know, what causes this all of a sudden? The server is UN-protected(IE: no anti-virus installed at all), could this be a possible anti-virus/ malware attack? • Windows XP problems displaying internet browser backgrounds correctly

  My friend has a Windows XP computer that doesn't show the colored background on pages, it's always white. On top of that some pictures won't show up, there will just be an empty white frame. Also when you left click on a folder, instead of opening it up, it opens up a new window that turns out to be the search results window. I've never heard of these problems before, and I can't find any information on the internet about it. I assume it's a virus deeply imbedded into the system, but no virus scanner has found it. • Sudden graphic card change? from Nvidia 8600GT to Nvidia 7050/Nvidia nForce 610i

  Yesterday I got a virus and I had the Nvidia 8600 gt, as I have had throughout the whole time I had this computer. So I decided to fully format my pc to get rid of the virus. When it was finished, It came up with Nvidia 7050/ Nvidia nForce 610i in my systems and all my games have significantly gone down by fps. Note the driver update that came with the PC that works for Nvidia 8600gt doesnt work anymore, I have tried to download it but it comes with an error message saying that the PC has an incompatible graphics card. Can anyone explain this sudden change? I know for sure I have bought an Nvidia 8600 gt, and not the current one I have.

• Allow email from a particular sender through spam filter

  We are running exchange 2010 and are using the built in anti-spam feature. We have set up Content Filtering, IP Block List Providers, Sender ID, Sender Reputation and it filters out most of the junk but it also quarantines all emails from one of our customers. It is being quarantined because of the Content Filter agent (Report Below). How can I add an exception for this email address to the Content Filter. I can see how to setup an exception for a delivery address ("Don't filter messages sent TO the following recipients") but I want to add [email protected] to our safe list. I don't want to add the whole domain as it is a very popular ISP in Australia and we often get junk from them. • Google Chrome appears to hijack default browser

  I read all the advice on how to make Firefox or IE for windows 7 the default browser. I know how to do this but the problem is whenever a program tries to open a page through the default browser it will default to Google Chrome and when I uninstalled Google Chrome then programs like Yahoo Messanger (getting a profile) would fail looking for chrome. I don't think Google would do this sort of thing "HiJack a Default Browser" I'm convinced it must be a trogen or virus or a registery hack. If so any ideas how I would go about fixing this without purchasing every virus/trogen program until it WAS removed This method could be an expensive fix. Thank you Russell Feldman

• Acer Aspire PC locked up and won't re-start

  Vista Home Premium locked up on 5/12/10 while on a website and could not get to 'control-alt-delete.' Mouse locked, too. On/off switch would not work (stayed lit) so I unplugged the power cord. When I tried to re-start the computer I could hear a fan running but it would not boot up, nothing on the monitor and no lights on the keyboard. O/S was preloaded so I do not have a boot disk.I tried pressing F1, F2 and F11 and also with monitor off but nothing worked. Computer has not been been moved or abused so all internal connections should be fine. Have updated Windows Vista Home Premium regularly and also updated Avira anti virus and anti malware programs regularly. Using Firefox and Vista Home Premium O/S. Computer is 2 years old and was purchased new from Best Buy.

• Make browsing safe for porn surfers

  At several places I've done some work at, I have a suspicion that some of the executives browse porn on their work computers. It appears this porn surfing has lead to virus infections on their computers despite the presence of an anti-virus. Filtering theses specific users' browsing is not an option, so what would be my next best solution be? I put Firefox + Adblock pro on their computers. I'm tempted to add NoScript, but I'm worried they'll start calling when noscript interferes with browsing on legit websites. Is there anything else I can due to mitigate this risk?

  yesterday I did a repair install, because Windows froze on welcome screen after resizing its partition on a dual boot system. corresponding question Everything worked fine so far, but now I am facing another challenge: The Windows drive letter changed from G: to C:, so that most programs, including drivers, firewall and virus scanner do not work anymore. I tried to reinstall the virus scanner, but the uninstaller said, that drive G: is not available. What to do now, to get all programs running again? Is it possible, to rename C: to G: or will that mess up my system?

• Why is Google Home page changing spontaneously

  Periodically, my Google Chrome home page (which I have originally set myself) changes spontaneously on opening the browser to display, instead, the page showing the rectangular small images of webpages I have visited before. In addition the bookmarks bar and my homepage icon has disappeared. I am also not directed to any other website location as might occur if a virus or malware were involved. I can correct all of these changes back to my original settings the way I prefer (and nothing prevents my resetting it) and can continue to browse with no difficulty but this changed situation has happened several times in the past month. I had assumed that this was an idiosyncrasy of how Chrome (mis)behaves but worry whether virus or malware might be involved. I have monitoring by antiviral and antimalware software and run periodic complete scans and occasionally these find Trojans and other malware which are removed but this browser behavior seems to recur I would like to prevent the surprises Thank you.

When I open my PC appears to skype error "exception in module Skype.exe at 0013CE7D.The EOleSysError RPC server is unavailable" and another one "Error in C: \ WINDOWS \ system32 \ Nvcpl.Dll Missing entry: NnStartup" when I install / uninstall a program says "Windows Installer service Could you not be accessed. This CAN occure if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not corectly installes. Contact your support personnel for assistance. • Windows 7 trying to turn off UAC every time Windows starts

  I have strange problem on my HP laptop. This began to happen recently. Whenever I start my machine, Windows 7 Action Center displays the following warning: You need to restart your computer for UAC to be turned off. I never disable UAC, but obviously some process or virus (I'm not sure, only guessing) causes this. As soon as I get this warning, I head for the UAC settings, and re-enable UAC to dismiss this warning. This is a bothersome situation as I really don't know what causes the problem. I have run a full scan on the computer for any probable virus activity, but TrendMicro OfficeScan said that no viruses have been found. There are no other strange incidents on the machine. Everthing works fine except this bizarre incident. How can I learn what process is trying to turn off UAC? What way should I follow to overcome this problem?

  Avast has added something to their software which Google Chrome tip whenever it informs you of an database update: It seems to only be the same message at the moment, as I am only getting the Search with Google right from the address bar to save time. Try Now: How can I stop it from giving me this tip and only show me the virus definitions have been updated message? Your virus definitions have been automatically updated I have tried looking under Settings > Popups, however I cannot find an option to disable it there. I tried these settings that is in my answer In the avast! settings interface there is an option to turn off recommendations and tips: Settings Community Edit: It doesn't seem to work anymore, it worked for the next 2 database updates and now it is showing the tip again.

• Explorer hijacked by a trojan

  I managed to catch a newish trojan that my Anti virus program wasn't able to detect. I'm usually not that bad at technical stuff regarding computers but I really don't know what to do with this one anymore. The trojan somehow managed to get my Windows to recover it every time I try to remove it by deleting it's exe (called some weird name located in Programs "asdza/saddasn.exe" (example only)). It also sets an entry in my autostart. It starts a second explorer.exe and tries to connect to some server obviously trying to steal data. (glad I still have my firewall) How can I get rid of this trojan, I really need help. It is new and probably unrecognized by all major virus scanners.
