  Hello. I want to handle following scenarios in my new web application. If multiple users log into the application with same credentials, the application should deny access. Since I have out of process session store, I would be able to make out when this situation happens. So I can deny all requests after first successful attempt. This will however not work if the user instead of logging out of the application, closes the browser. The session will continue to reflect in the store for the period of timeout value. If a user attempts to open a new browser windows (Ctrl+N), the application should defeat this attempt. Every new page can potentially fiddle with cookies. I want to therefore deny the users the ability to open new window.

  Is there any way to pull information about which client certificate was used inside of my web service method when using <security mode="Transport>? I sifted through OperationContext.Current but couldn't find anything obvious. My server configuration is as follows: <basicHttpBinding> <binding name="SecuredBasicBindingCert"> <security mode="Transport"> <message clientCredentialType="Certificate" /> </security> </binding> </basicHttpBinding> I'm working with a third party pub/sub system who is unfortunately using DataPower for authentication. It seems like if I'm using WCF with this configuration, then I'm unable to glean any information about the caller (since no credentials are actually sent). I somehow need to be able to figure out whose making calls to my service without changing my configuration or asking them to change their payload.

• Changing Render Kits in Browser

  I'm working on a project to develop a cross-browser testing web app. Simply put, I'm tired of having to maintain multiple browsers on the same system and IE in VMware solely for the purpose of testing. Does anyone know if there is any way to change the render kit programmatically? For example, if I insert a URL, I would be able to load the URL and switch the browser render within a frame of some assortment. I am experienced with PHP, JS, and RoR if there is a solution using any of those. Thank you! John

• Textbox height in a small browser window

  Hi folks, I have here a peculiar problem. We have a RAP application intended for use on a PDA/phone, but when it is displayed in a small browser window, all the textboxes on the form(s) are too tall (around twice the height they should be). I've stepped through the code (The form is using GridLayout, number of columns=1, make columns equal=false) and have found that the TextSizeDetermination.getCharHeight() method returns an incorrect font size if the browser window is too small - 13px if the window is large, 26px (exactly double) if the window is too small. Interestingly enough, it seems that if the window is too small, probeStore.containsProbeResult(font) in that method returns true and uses probeStore.getProbeResult(...).getSize().y for the font size. Otherwise, if the window is larger, it returns false and uses TextSizeEstimation.getCharHeight(...). Does anyone have a pointer or two for getting around this?   I have the opportunity to go back for MSCS and the closest college's main research is in computer security and forensics. I've always been interested in computer networks and security but I have no interest whatsoever to run cables or add users to the network( which is what the network people do where I currently work ). I wanted to know how may I find out the types of day to day task a computer security expert does? I don't mean the jobs you find on dice or indeed. I'm talking about the type of careers that start out at the NSA or DIA. Also, I'm wondering what the pay is like for these types of fields? Thanks to all that reply.

• Stop browser from filling textboxes with details

  Hi, I've run into a really annoying problem, and I'm hoping it's just a setting I've missed. I've got an ASP.NET application which allows users to enter their username/password in various places (e.g. login, change password, change username etc..). When I logged in, the browser asked if I would like to store the user details. Usually, I click 'no', but this time I decided to click 'yes'. Now, certain textboxes in my form are prefilled with the username or password. Is it possible to remove these, as they sometimes appear in textboxes which shouldn't be prefilled. I tried setting AutoCompleteType=none and Text='' but it still gets prefilled. The textboxes don't have much in common, except the same CssClass and, for password boxes, TextMode=password. The names are different, although sometimes they include the word name (e.g. fullName, userName). Is there a way to stop the browser from filling certain textboxes? Thanks

• Why don't stacks grow upwards (for security)?

  This is related to the question 'Why do stacks typically grow downwards?', but more from a security point of view. I'm generally referring to x86. It strikes me as odd that the stack would grow downwards, when buffers are usually written to upwards in memory. For example a typical C++ string has its end at a higher memory address than the beginning. This means that if there's a buffer overflow you're overwriting further up the call stack, which I understand is a security risk, since it opens the possibility of changing return addresses and local variable contents. If the stack grew upwards in memory, wouldn't buffer overflows simply run in to dead memory? Would this improve security? If so, why hasn't it been done? What about x64, do those stacks grow upwards and if not why not?

  I have e very specific test setup in mind. I would like to start a web-browser that understands Javascript and can use HTTP proxy, point it to a URL (ideally by specifying it in the command line along with the proxy config), wait for the page to load while listening (in the proxy) requests are generated as web-page is rendered and Javascript is executed, then kill the whole thing and restart. I don't care about how the page renders graphically at all. Which browser or tool should I use for this? Ideally it should be something self-contained that doesn't require installation (just an EXE file that runs from command line). Lynx would have been ideal but for the fact that it doesn't support JS. It should have as small memory footprint as possible.

Security is a major concern and I'd like to learn from some of the popular PHP CMS's like Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, etc. What are some security flaws or vulnerabilities that they have they had in the past that I can avoid in my application and what strategies can I use to avoid them? What are other issues that I need to be concerned with that they perhaps didn't face as a vulnerability because they handled it correctly from the start? What additional security features or measures would you include? Please be as specific as possible. I'm generally aware of most of the usual attack vectors, but I want to make sure that all the bases are covered, so don't be afraid to mention the obvious as well. Assume PHP 5.2+.

• Spring-Security http-basic auth in addition to other authentication types

  I have a pretty standard existing webapp using spring security that requires a database-backed form login for user-specific paths (such as /user/**), and some completely open and public paths (such as /index.html). However, as this webapp is still under development, I'd like to add a http-basic popup across all paths (/**) to add some privacy. Therefore, I'm trying to add a http-basic popup that asks for a universal user/pass combo (ex admin/foo) that would be required to view any path, but then still keep intact all of the other underlying authentication mechanisms. I can't really do anything with the <http> tag, since that will confuse the "keep out the nosy crawlers" authentication with the "user login" authentication, and I'm not seeing any way to associate different paths with different authentication mechanisms. Is there some way to do this with spring security? Alternatively, is there some kind of a dead simple filter that I can apply independently of spring-security's authentication mechanisms?

  I have a html page displayed using... cherrypy.quickstart(ShowHTML(htmlfile), config=configfile) Once the page is loaded (eg. initiated via. the command 'python mypage.py'), I would like to automatically launch the browser to display the page (eg. via. http://localhost/8000).   I want to be able to browse through heaps of images in the browser, fast. THe easy way (just load 2000 images and scroll) slows down the scrolling a lot, assumedly because there's too much images to be kept in memory. I'd love to hear thoughts on strategies to be able to quickly scroll through 10000s of images (as if you were on your desktop) in the browser. What would expected bottlenecks be? How to address them? How to fake things so that the user experience is still good? Examples in the wild?

  Hi, I have a shipping/billing input form and I'm having trouble styling the input fields to be the same width... Here is a link (click one of the order bottles to go to the checkout page which contains the form) The Problem: -a field <input type="text" size="X" /> appears to render with different sizes in different browsers (see link). -In addition, select fields seem to render on a differently as well. -Chrome/safari do not seem to respond to the font-size property for select fields. Any guidance on how to stylize the size of text-input and select fields cross-browser would be oh so very helpful. Must I result to having a different sytlesheet for each browser... just for these input fields? -thanks

I am not talking about opening a file from a browser (like open a PDF with Adobe Reader), but rather opening a new (blank) instance of an application that is installed on the user's machine. Hypothetical situation: User browses a website that lists computers that can be managed via RDP. He clicks on a link to 192.168.1.10, that link opens Microsoft RDP client (mstsc.exe) with that ip address already filled out. I am talking strictly about Windows universe.   I am working with d3.js for rendering my graphs. For some reason, I am not a huge fan of svg title because of the delay it incurs and the inability to style them. Please do correct me if I am wrong. I recently came across, tipsy but it does not seem to be cross-browser compatible. For instance, consider this. The tooltips work just fine in Firefox and Chrome but do not appear even in IE 9 and I'm not sure what's going on. Is there a cleaner cross-browser approach for tooltips compatible with d3.js other than using the svg title attribute?

• Linux friendly (.NET/Mono) browser object?

  Hi folks, A friend of mine (familiar with C# and .NET on Windows) has asked how to port some functionality to a Linux host. This functionality is based on a JSP web page that fetches some data from the host server and displays it in a banner on a page. His Win/C#/.NET code simply creates a browser object which loads the page and he then inspects the resulting object to extract the data. I'm wondering what alternatives exist to duplicate this function on Ubuntu Linux. I'm not certain that the necessary libraries exist on this installation. I can assume that things like Perl and Python are ubiquitous, but I am not familiar with any libraries that include a browser object capable of executing javascript and exposing the results to another program. Any suggestions that lead in this direction are welcome. Thanks!

• Cross-Browser jQuery text-zoom implementation

  I've got some code to increase/decrease font size. This is giving me a headache because each browser seems to implement the $.css('font-size') differently (see jquery bug). The part that's really killing me, though, is that Firefox is scaling up okay, but when I use the scale down function below, it scales up. Webkit & IE are both working as expected. Any ideas on that?
