• Install updates without breaking shell theme?

  Recently I installed a copy of Oneiric Ocelot 11.10 on my ThinkPad. Everything went fine, I installed the gnome shell and gnome-tweak-tool to customize everything. I changed the shell theme, the GTK+ theme and the icon set. After everything fit my needs perfectly, I installed some updates from the update manager (no upgrades, just small updates). I had to restart, and after I restarted, my gnome shell was broken. In tweak-tool, it showed the customized shell as the default one, and my gtk theme was broken as well (it looked like two themes "frankensteined" together...). The bad thing was - I couldn't get things back into the default settings! So the only thing left was to use the -non broken- unity shell. What can I do to stop these things from happening? (I mean...sure I could avoid the updates, but that would be kind of stupid, too.) I only have these PPAs installed: ferramroberto-gnome3-oneiric.list (and .save), playonlinux.list (and .save) And how can I fix the broken gnome-shell?

• Dual monitor setup can cause boot problem?

  I have a two monitor setup, one 22" (1680x1050 res., 16:10) and another 19" (1280x1024 res. 5:4). I've installed ubuntu 11.10 beta2 x86, and the installation worked fine, the system boot was successful. I've upgraded ubuntu from the main server, and after restart, booting with the kernel 3.0.0-13, my system hangs up with a purple screen, and than nothing happens (the system boots successful with the kernel image 3.0.0-8). Nvidia current drivers not installed, but if i install it, the situation is the same. I have an Nvidia 9600GT installed. I tried to boot with one screen attached, I've tried each port, but no luck at all. With kernel image 3.0.0-8 the system successfully boots with each display attached, but the farther kernels (3.0.0-11; 3.0.0-12; ect.) all freezes, even one display, or multiple attached. I have two systems with ubuntu installed, and the other (with Ati HD 2400XT, latest closed drivers) don't have any issues like this, I wrote about. Update: The problem solved by reinstalling the operatin system, without automatically installing updates during install, with only one monitor attached. After completing installation, and clean reboot, i've installed closed nVidia drivers. After all, i found it's safe to connect another monitor to the system, it's not causing any problems. Probably the situation stays like this.

  So currently, I have this in each object's renderer's update method: float a = transform.position.x * Main.scale; float b = transform.position.y * Main.scale; float c = Camera.main.transform.position.x * Main.scale; float d = Camera.main.transform.position.y * Main.scale; onscreen = a + width - c > 0 && a - c < GameView.width && b + height - d > 0 && b - d < GameView.height; transform.position is a 2D vector containing the game engine's definition of where the object is - this is then multiplied by Main.scale to translate that coordinate into actual screen space Similarly, Camera.main.transform.position is the in-engine representation of where the main camera is, and this is also multiplied by Main.scale The problem is, as my game is tile-based, thousands of these updates get called every frame, just to determine whether or not each object should be drawn - how can I improve this please?

  Anytime I try to install python packages using the command: sudo apt-get install python-package I get the following output: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... This seems to have started when these same three packages showed up in Ubuntu's Update Manager and kicked an error when I tried to install them there. I want to do something similiar to replace a string in SQL server I want to do this but the value exists in multiple columns of the same type. The values are foreign keys varchars to an employee table. Each column represents a task, so the same employee may be assigned to several tasks in a record and those tasks will vary between records. • Rails - How do i update a records value in a join model ?

  I have a join model in a HABTM relationship with a through association (details below). I 'm trying to find a record....find the value of that records attribute...change the value and update the record but am having a hard time doing it. The model setup is this User.rb has_many :choices has_many :interests, :through => :choices Interest.rb has_many :choices has_many :users, :through => :choices Choice.rb belongs_to :user belongs_to :interest and Choice has the user_id, interest_id, score as fields. And I find the ?object? like so @choice = Choice.where(:user_id => @user.id, :interest_id => interest.id) So the model Choice has an attribute called :score. How do I find the value of the score column....and +1/-1 it and then resave? I tried @choice.score = @choice.score + 1 @choice.update_attributes(params[:choice]) flash[:notice] = "Successfully updated choices value." but I get "undefined method score"......What did i miss?

• How to update Eclipse from 3.4 (Ganymede) to 3.5 (Galileo)?

  I've got my Eclipse 3.4 envirnoment set up nice and cozy the way I like it. Took me some time too, to find all the plugins (Mylin, PDT, Subclipse), set all the settings, etc. Now I see that some of the plugins (like PDT) only support 3.5 in their latest versions. Is it possible to update from 3.4 to 3.5? I'd hate to do it all again. I read in some mailing list where they noted that it's possible, but the conversation trailed off in another direction. Google wasn't much help, and Eclipse's documentation either.

• R: How to update a package and keep it from reverting to the original?

  I want to upgrade the package ggplot2: library(ggplot2) packageDescription("ggplot2")["Version"] > 0.8.3 But the current version is 0.8.7. I tried update.packages(), which seemed to work OK. But it still returned older version 0.8.3. So I downloaded and installed the package source from Cran, which says 0.8.7 in the download page. I then install it via the GUI menu in R. It returns ** building package indices ... * DONE (ggplot2) I then run: packageDescription("ggplot2")["Version"] > 0.8.3 And still I have the older version! I don't know why this is not working, what's more I had already come across this problem before and solved it (I can't remember exactly what) but now it has gone back to the older version! What's the easiest way to keep packages like this updated automatically and not have them refer back to older packages?

  I want to update the following rows after the sum of the previous rows reach a defined threshold. I'm using MySQL, and trying to think of a way to solve this using SQL only. Here's an example. Having the threshold 100. Iterating through the rows, when the sum of the previous rows amount = 100, set the following rows to checked. Before the operation: | id | amount | checked | | 1 | 50 | false | | 2 | 50 | false | | 3 | 20 | false | | 4 | 30 | false | After the operation: | id | amount | checked | | 1 | 50 | false | | 2 | 50 | false | <- threshold reached (50 + 50 = 100) | 3 | 20 | true* | | 4 | 30 | true* | Is it possible to do it with just a SQL query? Do I need a stored procedure? How could I implement it using either solution?

• MySQL UPDATE WHERE IN for each listed value separately?

  Hi, I've got the following type of SQL: UPDATE photo AS f LEFT JOIN car AS c ON f.car_id=c.car_id SET f.photo_status=1 , c.photo_count=c.photo_count+1 WHERE f.photo_id IN ($ids) Basically, two tables (car & photo) are related. The list in $ids contains unique photo ids, such as (34, 87, 98, 12). With the query, I'm setting the status of each photo in that list to "1" in the photo table and simultaneously incrementing the photo count in the car table for the car at hand. It works but there's one snag: Because the list can contain multiple photo ids that relate to the same car, the photo count only ever gets incremented once. If the list had 10 photos associated with the same car, photo_count would become 1 .... whereas I'd like to increment it to 10. Is there a way to make the incrementation occur for each photo individually through the join, as opposed to MySQL overthinking it for me? I hope the above makes sense. Thanks.

  If you are an SQL Server Consultant/Trainer involved with Performance Tuning and Query Optimization, I am sure you have faced the following questions many times. When is statistics updated? What is the interval of Statistics update? What is the algorithm behind update statistics? These are the puzzling questions and more. I searched the Internet as well many official MS documents in order to find answers. All of them have provided almost similar algorithm. However, at many places, I have seen a bit of variation in algorithm as well. I have finally compiled the list of various algorithms and decided to share what was the most common “factor” in all of them. I would like to ask for your suggestions as whether following the details, when Statistics is updated, are accurate or not. I will update this blog post with accurate information after receiving your ideas. The answer I have found here is when statistics are expired and not when they are automatically updated. I need your help here to answer when they are updated. Permanent table If the table has no rows, statistics is updated when there is a single change in table. If the number of rows in a table is less than 500, statistics is updated for every 500 changes in table. If the number of rows in table is more than 500, statistics is updated for every 500+20% of rows changes in table. Temporary table If the table has no rows, statistics is updated when there is a single change in table. If the number of rows in table is less than 6, statistics is updated for every 6 changes in table. If the number of rows in table is less than 500, statistics is updated for every 500 changes in table. If the number of rows in table is more than 500, statistics is updated for every 500+20% of rows changes in table. Table variable There is no statistics for Table Variables. If you want to read further about statistics, I suggest that you read the white paper Statistics Used by the Query Optimizer in Microsoft SQL Server 2008. • Kernel Error during upgrade or update commands

  I am getting these errors during sudo apt-get update and upgrade... I tried all possible options no success. I recently upgraded to 13.04 and had problems with Broadcom WiFi. Fixed tat issues using the clean script... but looks like it did not install the Kernel properly.. • Time calculation between openGL update calls.

  In XNA, the system calls update and draw function with the time information. This contains information such as how much time has passed since last update was called. This makes easy to integrate time and do animation calculation accordingly. But I dont see any such mechanism in openGL. I see openGL requires programmers to have their own implementation which could be buggy or inefficient. Is there any standard (and efficient) code that demonstrate this practice in openGL?
