  • Shutdown problem in ubuntu 12.04 LTS

    I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I'm getting a serious bug: When I try to shutdown my system, my screen goes blank but my CPU fan keeps running, i.e. the processor is still working but I am not able to see anything on my screen. I need to power off my machine for a complete shutdown. I am using a desktop with an Intel P4 processor. I found a solution on the internet involving modifying the GRUB config file. But even after doing so I wasn't able to eliminate the issue.

  • Problems with input and suspend(separately)

    I'm still very new at Ubuntu/any other linux OS, so this might be an easy fix for most. I installed Ubuntu 14.04 a few days ago, it's dual-booted with Windows 8.1 and I'm using a Toshiba laptop. Whenever I suspend/close my computer, and then open it again, the front LEDs will light up telling me that it's running, but the screen will not do anything. I can hear the fan spinning, but it's almost like the screen doesn't power on like it should. Also, another problem I'm having, is that ~60% of the time, my trackpad and keyboard do not work at all, this starts as soon as Ubuntu boots up. To fix it, I just turn it off and back on until it works. My USB mouse does work no matter what though. Both problems are only present in Ubuntu and not windows 8.1.

  • Laptop choice for development: MacBook Pro 17 vs Dell Studio XPS 16 vs HP Envy 15

    Hey! First things first - let me state that I am not intending to play games on this - I have narrowed down to these 3 purely based on specs and its individual brand reliability in the market. I intend to primarily use: Visual Studio 2008 Pro a lot (develop and deploy on Windows platforms) SQL Server 2005 Oracle 10g Adobe Photoshop CS4 Microsoft Expression Studio Google Sketchup I currently use a desktop PC (Core2Duo 2.66Ghz with 3GB DDRII memory) running Vista Business 32-bit - and I have to admit that, especially for Visual Studio, its quite sluggish to a point where it affects productivity. Furthermore, I intend to only use the notebook on a table - with a cooled surface, like granite :) - so I would appreciate people's input with regard to heat issues. Im aware that the Dell's primary exhaust gets blocked by the lid when open, but some reviews don't seem to place extraordinary emphasis on heat issues resulting from this. My options for the Dell/Alienware: Core i7 720QM 4GB DDRIII memory ATI mobility 3670 (512) 128GB Solid State Drive 16-inch Full HD RGB-LED LCD display (1080p) 3-year next-business-day support My configuration for the Apple MBP: Core2Duo 2.8Ghz (Im assuming the T9600) 4GB DDRIII memory 128GB Solid State Drive standard 1 year support The one advantage I think of with the MBP is that I can have the addition of OSX (though Im unsure what I would use it for, but purely to play around with a much-boasted-about OS) What are your thoughts on this, especially regarding build-quality, heat, performance and battery-life?   • Customer site is out of IP addresses, they want to go from /24 to /12 netmask... Bad idea?

    One of my client sites called to ask me to change the subnet masks of the Linux servers I manage there while they re-IP/change the netmask of their network based on a 10.0.0.x scheme. "Can you change the server netmasks from 255.255.255.0 to 255.240.0.0?" You mean, 255.255.240.0? "No, 255.240.0.0." Are you sure you need that many IP addresses? "Yeah, we never want to run out of IP addresses." A quick check against the Subnet Cheat Sheet shows: a 255.255.255.0 netmask, a /24 provides 256 hosts. It's clear to see that an organization can exhaust that number of IP addresses. a 255.240.0.0 netmask, a /12 provides 1,048,576 hosts. This is a small < 200-user site. I doubt that they'd allocate more than 400 IP addresses. I suggested something that provides fewer hosts, like a /22 or /21 (1024 and 2048 hosts, respectively), but was unable to give a specific reason against using the /12 subnet. Is there anything this customer should be concerned about? Are there any specific reasons they shouldn't use such an incredibly large mask in their environment?

  • WebSphere hung threads, how can I track then down?

    We have an application running on WebSphere (unfortunately it is 6.1 which is no longer supported, it has not yet been migrated in production to a later version) which becomes entirely unresponsive because of hung threads. As far as I can tell we entirely exhaust one of the thread pools. I have activated hung thread detection and I get a core/thread dump when hung threads are detected. The server can run for several days without problems but has crashed twice this week. When load the core/thread dump in "IBM Thread and Monitor Dump Analyzer for Java", it tells me that there are a certain number of hung threads (this time it was 2, last time 11) and multiple (usually around 40) threads "waiting on condition" and some running threads. I believe one of the thread pool has around that size (50). Now what I see in there are threads waiting for locks, having locks or in wait. Most of them show a stack track which always ends like this: at java/lang/Object.wait(Native Method) at java/lang/Object.wait(Object.java:231) Now, how can I track this down to either a server configuration problem, application issue, WebSphere problem or something else? How is this supposed to help me track down the problem when almost everything in there refers to IBM code? I cannot ask IBM's help as 6.1 is now an unsupported version of WebSphere and while work has been done to make it work under WebSphere 7 we are not yet ready to switch to it in Production yet.

I know how to do this server side using the Facebook fb_sig_locale param but I was planning on just using the Static FBML app which is much simpler than setting up a whole custom application.

I tried things like this to get the music preferences : facebook_session.user.music but I get a blank string instead of the relevant connections.   • Get a Facebook stream post by post_id

    I want to get the details (contents, user info) of a post that was made on a fan page's stream. I have the post_id variable but don't see any method/api call where I can pass in a post_id to get the post contents. The only thing that seems possible is getting the entire stream and comparing the post_id item by item... which is slow and inefficient. Anyone had this problem or know how to do it?

  • Best way to change the background color for an NSView

    I'm looking for the best way to change the background color of an NSView. I'd also like to be able to set the appropriate alpha mask for the NSView. Something like: myView.backgroundColor = [NSColor colorWithCalibratedRed:0.227f green:0.251f blue:0.337 alpha:0.8]; I notice that NSWindow has this method, and I'm not a big fan of the NSColorWheel, or NSImage background options, but if they are the best, willing to use.

  • Rmagick, Watermarks, and Image Transparency

    I'm having trouble making an image semi-transparent. I have one image I'd like to set to 50% opacity and position it over another image(using composite operator:OverCompositeOp). Anyone know how an easy way to do such a thing? A little background: I'm trying to make a good watermark to place over images, but I'm not fan of rmagick's built-in watermark() function or the shade-composite method.
