  • Earth’s Radiation Belt Sounds like Whale Song [Video]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
The radio frequencies of Earth’s radiation belt have uncanny resemblance to a sort of whale/bird song remix. Check out this video to learn more about NASA’s efforts to explore the belts and listen to the Earth’s song. When we hear the “song” of the Earth, exactly what are we hearing? Science@NASA explains: Chorus is an electromagnetic phenomenon caused by plasma waves in Earth’s radiation belts. For years, ham radio operators on Earth have been listening to them from afar. Now, NASA’s twin Radiation Belt Storm Probes are traveling through the region of space where chorus actually comes from–and the recordings are out of this world. “This is what the radiation belts would sound like to a human being if we had radio antennas for ears,” says Kletzing, whose team at the University of Iowa built the “EMFISIS” (Electric and Magnetic Field Instrument Suite and Integrated Science) receiver used to pick up the signals. He’s careful to point out that these are not acoustic waves of the kind that travel through the air of our planet. Chorus is made of radio waves that oscillate at acoustic frequencies, between 0 and 10 kHz. The magnetic search coil antennas of the Radiation Belt Storm Probes are designed to detect these kinds of waves. • Artemis Is The Absolute Geekiest LAN Game You’ll Ever Play [Video]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Prepare to have your sense of what really geeky computer gaming look like with this Star Trek-like mockup that involves a projector, multiple monitors, and a crew of six. If you have five friends willing to pool some resources–because let us tell you, it’s not going to be cheap to build this gaming setup from scratch–you’re on your way to building a functional starship bridge in your rec room. You’ll need six computers and monitors, a projector to create the front-of-the-bridge-room effect, and a copy of the game–the full retail game is $40 but there is a free demo so you can take the starship simulation for a test spin. The base game is focused on simple simulations like defending your space station and fighting off waves of invaders, however, a recent update of the game supports user-created mission packs. The missions packs allow fans of the game to create intricate missions with objectives to expand the game much like fan-created RPG modules add game play value to table top role-playing games. • SQL SERVER – SQL Server Performance: Indexing Basics – SQL in Sixty Seconds #006 – Video

    - by pinaldave
A DBA’s role is critical, because a production environment has to run 24×7, hence maintenance, trouble shooting, and quick resolutions are the need of the hour.  The first baby step into any performance tuning exercise in SQL Server involves creating, analyzing, and maintaining indexes. Though we have learnt indexing concepts from our college days, indexing implementation inside SQL Server can vary.  Understanding this behavior and designing our applications appropriately will make sure the application is performed to its highest potential. Vinod Kumar and myself we often thought about this and realized that practical understanding of the indexes is very important. One can not master every single aspects of the index. However there are some minimum expertise one should gain if performance is one of the concern. More on Indexes: SQL Index SQL Performance I encourage you to submit your ideas for SQL in Sixty Seconds. We will try to accommodate as many as we can. Here is the interview of Vinod Kumar by myself. • The Inebriator: A DIY Arduino-powered Cocktail Machine [Video]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
We’ve seen our fair share of geeky alcohol-related projects over the years but this, this, is something to see. The Inebriator is the slickest automated drink machine we’ve laid eyes on. Before we even start talking specs, check out the video above–don’t forget to first assure your liver that you don’t actually have access to such a magnificent device and it can remain calm. As dazzled as we were? The whole thing is powered by an Arduino Mega 2560, sports a cooler with nitrogen pressurization of drink mix bottles, and relies on a rather ingenious and elegantly simple 12v valve system. It even has an RFID security system to prevent party goers with a few drinks in them from messing up the custom drink menu. Hit up the link below for more information, including photos of the guts and technical specs. • How Mars Lost Its Atmosphere [Video]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Scientists have long theorized that Mars once had an atmosphere and surface water–but where did it go? This video showcases one of their theories about Mars’ vanished water reserves. Courtesy of NASA and the NASAexplorer channel: When you take a look at Mars, you probably wouldn’t think that it looks like a nice place to live. It’s dry, it’s dusty, and there’s practically no atmosphere. But some scientists think that Mars may have once looked like a much nicer place to live, with a thicker atmosphere, cloudy skies, and possibly even liquid water flowing over the surface. So how do you go from something like this–to something like this? NASA’s MAVEN spacecraft will give us a clearer idea of how Mars lost its atmosphere, and scientists think that several processes have had an impact. • Game: Age of Empires sound good but video "out of range"

    - by Ezekiel
I'm new to the Ubuntu realm. Currently i'm using Linux Mint 12 with Wine 1.4 and PLAYONLINUX as game loading/playing programs. Video card is MSI GeForce FX5200 (NVIDIA) and is 3d enabled. I can play "Call of Duty 5 demo just fine. My real love is the Age of Empires series games. I loaded the WINE version of AOE 1 demo. No sound and no picture. Black screen with "Out of Range" window in red. I loaded my CD version of AOE 1 through PLAYONLINUX. I get the sound just fine but again the black screen with "Out of Range" window in red. I have used all the monitor settings in both the "settings" and in winecfg. None of the eight monitor options worked in any combination. I have checked all the questions and blogs on this error and tried all I found and no one seems to come up with a real fix. I guess I need to know exactly what the "Out of Range" means. Any help? Anywhere? Thanks

  • Can Dungeons & Dragons Make You More Successful? [Video]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Dungeons & Dragons gets a bit of a bad rap in popular culture, but in this video treatise from Idea Channel, they propose that Dungeons & Dragons wires players for success. There are some deeply ingrained stereotypes about Dungeons & Dragons, and those stereotypes usually begin and end with people shouting “NERD!!!” But the reality of the D&D universe is a whole lot more complex. Rather than being an escape from reality, D&D is actually a way to enhance some important real life skillz! It’s a chance to learn problem solving, visualization, interaction, organization, people management… the list could go on and on. Plus, there are some very famous non-nerds who have declared an affinity for D&D, so best stop criticizing and join in if you want to be a successful at the game of life. While we’re trying not to let our love of all things gaming cloud our judgement, we’re finding it difficult to disagree with the premise that open-ended play fosters creative and adaptive thinking. • Linux Flash Player with 2 Monitors: always full-screen on primary monitor

    - by CarlF
My setup at home uses a laptop, with a larger external monitor in addition to the built-in LCD panel, which is primary. I can see the larger monitor from the rest of the room and use it as my TV, for playing DVDs and various types of web video. However, it isn't ideal for Flash video. For instance, if I watch a video from Hulu or any other Flash-based site, I can expand it to full-screen mode. However, no matter which monitor the browser window is on, the full-screen mode is always on the laptop LCD panel, which is both too small and not visible from most of the room. Does anyone know of a way to force the Flash video to play full-screen on the monitor I select instead of the primary? My video chipset is NVidia, using kernel 2.6.31 (Ubuntu). Thanks.

  • Encoding multiple video streams with a single avconv invocation

    - by automatthias
I played with avconv on Ubuntu and I'm now able to e.g. record the desktop with sound from a soundcard. One thing I wanted to do was recording two video inputs at the same time, for instance the desktop and from the webcam. I thought about doing something like this: avconv \ -f alsa \ -i default \ -acodec flac \ -f video4linux2 \ -r 6 \ -i /dev/video0 \ -f x11grab \ -i :0.0 \ out.mkv My thinking was that if you define multiple video inputs, and the .mkv format can handle multiple video streams, avconv will encode 2 video streams and 1 audio stream into one file. But this isn't what happens: avconv version 0.8.4-6:0.8.4-0ubuntu0.12.10.1, Copyright (c) 2000-2012 the Libav developers built on Nov 6 2012 16:51:11 with gcc 4.7.2 [alsa @ 0x1091bc0] capture with some ALSA plugins, especially dsnoop, may hang. I'm not sure if it's the question of mapping (some -map options to add?) or that avconv just can't encode more than 1 video stream at one time. So is it an actual avconv limitation, or a limitation of the available containers, or me simply not finding the right combination of command line options?

  • What is the most Linux friendly video card chipset/manufacturer on the market?

    - by rrc7cz
I've wasted an absurd amount of time trying to get my nVidia card to function properly in Linux (Ubuntu & Fedora). I've decided to purchase a new video card that will "just work" with any Linux I throw at it. Making things even easier, I'm not a gamer, though I do appreciate some of the 3D or alpha blending effects seen in modern GUIs. What cards and/or manufacturers do you recommend for the maximum acceleration with minimum problems?

  • Missing audio and problems playing FLV video converted from 720p .mov file with FFMPEG

    - by undefined
I have some .mov video files recorded from a JVC GC-FM1 HD video camera in 720p mode. I have FFMPEG running on a Linux box that I upload files to and have them encoded into FLV format. The video appears to be encoding ok but there is no audio in the resulting FLV file and when I play it back in Flash Player in a browser or on Adobe Media Player, the video pauses at the start. It appears that Adobe Media Player waits for the progress bar to reach the end of the video before starting the playback - i.e. the video will load, the picture pauses, the progress bar seeks to the end as if the video was playing then when it reaches the end the video picture starts. There is no audio on the video. I am noticing this in the video player I have built with Flash 8 using an FLVPlayback component and attached seekBar. The seek bar will start moving as if the video is playing but the picture remains paused. Here are some outputs from my FFMPEG log and the command I am using to encode the video - my FFMPEG command called from PHP - $cmd = 'ffmpeg -i ' . $sourcelocation.$filename.".".$fileext . Hi! I want to embed some video into my HTML page. As background I want to use big picture. And above it I want to insert loop video with (i.e.) walking man. So, can I embed video (without flash and any player controls) in page? Can I decode video with transparent background? Is there any codecs which support transparent background (alpha-channel)? Now I see this solutions: Making flash (that I don't want to use) Create gif animation (and it will be big file size and quite bad quality)

  • How do you handle live video streaming in Flash AS3?

    - by CodeJustin.com
I've been dabbling with socket servers in Java and now I'm ready to get my feet wet with an idea I had. I would like to use python for my socket server and obviously AS3 for my client. I'm able to create a full chat using my own python socket server but I'm almost clueless what to do now that I want to add in LIVE video (want to make it a live video "chat"). I've found tutorials but they are for FMS and I can not afford that, also Red5 looked nice but couldn't find a live video tutorial off hand (plus I would have to switch to Red5 from my own socket server). So if someone could even nudge me into some resources on the subject (the subject of live video without using FMS) that would be very helpful, Google is failing me right now.

  • Zend Framework + Uplodify Flash Uploader Troubles

    - by Richard Knop
I've been trying to get the Uploadify flash uploader (www.uploadify.com) to work with Zend Framework, with no success so far. I have placed all Uploadify files under /public/flash-uploader directory. In the controller I include all required files and libraries like this: $this->view->headScript()->appendFile('/js/jquery-1.3.2.min.js'); $this->view->headLink()->appendStylesheet('/flash-uploader/css/default.css'); $this->view->headLink()->appendStylesheet('/flash-uploader/css/uploadify.css'); $this->view->headScript()->appendFile('/flash-uploader/scripts/swfobject.js'); $this->view->headScript()->appendFile('/flash-uploader/scripts/jquery.uploadify.v2.1.0.min.js'); And then I activate the plugin like this (#photo is id of the input file field): $(document).ready(function() { $("#photo").uploadify({ 'uploader' : '/flash-uploader/scripts/uploadify.swf', 'script' : 'my-account/flash-upload', 'cancelImg' : '/flash-uploader/cancel.png', 'folder' : 'uploads/tmp', 'queueID' : 'fileQueue', 'auto' : true, 'multi' : true, 'sizeLimit' : 2097152 }); }); As you can see I am targeting the my-account/flash-upload script as a backend processing (my-account is a controller, flash-upload is an action). My form markup looks like this: <form enctype="multipart/form-data" method="post" action="/my-account/upload-public-photo"><ol> <li><label for="photo" class="optional">File Queue<div id="fileQueue"></div></label> <input type="hidden" name="MAX_FILE_SIZE" value="31457280" id="MAX_FILE_SIZE" /> <input type="file" name="photo" id="photo" class="input-file" /></li> <li><div class="button"> <input type="submit" name="upload_public_photo" id="upload_public_photo" value="Save" class="input-submit" /></div></li></ol></form> And yet it's not working. The browse button doesn't even show up as in the demo page, I get only a regular input file field. Any ideas where could the problem be? I've already been staring into the code for hours and I cannot see any mistake anywhere and I'm starting to be exhausted after going through the same 30 lines of code 30 times in a row.

Environment Debian 7.5 ffmpeg 2.2 Input stream $ ffprobe http://account:password@webcam/videostream.asf Input #0, asf, from 'http://admin:alpha1237@webcam/videostream.asf': Duration: N/A, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 32 kb/s Stream #0:0: Video: mjpeg (MJPG / 0x47504A4D), yuvj422p(pc), 640x480, 25 tbr, 1k tbn, 1k tbc Stream #0:1: Audio: adpcm_ima_wav ([17][0][0][0] / 0x0011), 8000 Hz, 1 channels, s16p, 32 kb/s ffserver configuration my ffserver configuration is : Port 8091 RTSPPort 554 BindAddress 192.168.1.62 MaxHTTPConnections 1000 MaxClients 100 MaxBandwidth 1000 CustomLog - <Feed webcam.ffm> File /tmp/webcam.ffm FileMaxSize 500M ACL allow localhost ACL allow 192.168.0.0 192.168.255.255 </Feed> <Stream webcam.webm> # Output stream URL definition Feed webcam.ffm # Feed from which to receive video Format webm # Audio settings AudioCodec vorbis AudioBitRate 64 # Audio bitrate # Video settings VideoCodec libvpx VideoSize 640x480 # Video resolution VideoFrameRate 25 # Video FPS AVOptionVideo flags +global_header # Parameters passed to encoder # (same as ffmpeg command-line parameters) AVOptionVideo cpu-used 0 AVOptionVideo qmin 10 AVOptionVideo qmax 42 AVOptionVideo quality good AVOptionAudio flags +global_header PreRoll 15 StartSendOnKey # VideoBitRate 32 # Video bitrate </Stream> <Stream status.html> Format status # Only allow local people to get the status ACL allow localhost ACL allow 192.168.0.0 192.168.255.255 </Stream> ffmpeg feed I run the following command that fails $ ffmpeg -i http://account:password@webcam/videostream.asf http://192.168.1.62:8091/webcam.ffm http://192.168.1.62:8091/webcam.ffm Input #0, asf, from 'http://account:password@webcam/videostream.asf': Duration: N/A, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 32 kb/s Stream #0:0: Video: mjpeg (MJPG / 0x47504A4D), yuvj422p(pc), 640x480, 25 tbr, 1k tbn, 1k tbc Stream #0:1: Audio: adpcm_ima_wav ([17][0][0][0] / 0x0011), 8000 Hz, mono, s16p, 32 kb/s [swscaler @ 0x36a80c0] deprecated pixel format used, make sure you did set range correctly Segmentation fault I tryed $ ffmpeg -i http://account:password@webcam/videostream.asf -pix_fmt yuv420p http://192.168.1.62:8091/webcam.ffm But it raises the same error. Thanks for your help Edit For an easy testing (I thought), I tried to publish the whole ASF stream as is, meaning connecting the ASF webcam output stream to the ffserver that outputs ASF format too. And thus with mirrored encoding so I changed the ffserver configuration to ... <Stream webcam.asf> Feed webcam.ffm Format asf VideoFrameRate 25 VideoSize 640X480 VideoBitRate 256 VideoBufferSize 1000 VideoGopSize 30 AudioBitRate 32 StartSendOnKey </Stream> ... And the output is now : Input #0, asf, from 'http://admin:alpha1237@webcam/videostream.asf': Duration: N/A, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 32 kb/s Stream #0:0: Video: mjpeg (MJPG / 0x47504A4D), yuvj422p(pc), 640x480, 1k tbr, 1k tbn, 1k tbc Stream #0:1: Audio: adpcm_ima_wav ([17][0][0][0] / 0x0011), 8000 Hz, mono, s16p, 32 kb/s [swscaler @ 0x3d620c0] deprecated pixel format used, make sure you did set range correctly Output #0, ffm, to 'http://192.168.1.62:8091/webcam.ffm': Metadata: creation_time : now encoder : Lavf55.40.100 Stream #0:0: Audio: wmav2, 22050 Hz, mono, fltp, 32 kb/s Metadata: encoder : Lavc55.64.100 wmav2 Stream #0:1: Video: msmpeg4v3 (msmpeg4), yuv420p, 640x480, q=2-31, 256 kb/s, 1k fps, 1000k tbn, 1k tbc Metadata: Stream mapping: Stream #0:1 -> #0:0 (adpcm_ima_wav -> wmav2) Stream #0:0 -> #0:1 (mjpeg -> msmpeg4) Press [q] to stop, [?] for help Segmentation fault I can't even forward the stream.
