• Configuring Full-Text Search for pdf and docx files

  I think in may I was creating a little filters module based on Full Text-Search. I have configured my dev machine, the same for two testing servers – in our company for internal testing before we deployed it to client, and then on the testing client server. Until last week this build  was still on the testing server and finally we got feedback that we can deploy it on the production one. I only say that, I lost half a day because I had not correctly remembered what I was doing to configure the FTS on the previous servers and I had no notes for that. I foolishly believed in my memory. Lesson learned.   For future reference a bunch of steps to configure the FTS for searching in *.pdf and *.docx files (and by the way in other Office files like *.xlsx).   1. From the page (link) download and install the *.pdf IFilter for FTS. 2. To the PATH global system variable add path to the catalog, where you installed the plugin. Default for this version is: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PDF iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms\bin 3. From the page (link) download a FilterPackx64.exe and install it. 4. Now from SSMS execute the following procedures: -sp_fulltext_service 'load_os_resources',1 -sp_fulltext_service 'verify_signature', 0 5. Restart the server 6. Now we must check if the plugins are visible: -select document_type, path from sys.fulltext_document_types where document_type = '.pdf' -select document_type, path from sys.fulltext_document_types where document_type = '.docx' 7. If we see a result, then we can assume that everything is ok*. 8. Right now we can create a catalog for FTS and indexes on appropriate columns.     *I lost a lot of hours to find out, why the plugin for the *.pdf files wasn’t indexed any file in the database, but in the sys.fulltext_document_types table there was available a line for this plugin. After the deeper investigation I found that the *.pdf files actually were indexed. At least the EOF sign was added to the indexes and nothing more for each file. In the end the problem was that, I forgot to add the /bin in the path to the plugin in PATH variable..

  Hi all. The query I need help with is: SELECT d.bn, d.4700, d.4500, ... , p.`Activity Description` FROM ( SELECT temp.bn, temp.4700, temp.4500, .... FROM `tdata` temp GROUP BY temp.bn HAVING (COUNT(temp.bn) = 1) ) d LEFT OUTER JOIN ( SELECT temp2.bn, max(temp2.FPE) AS max_fpe, temp2.`Activity Description` FROM `pdata` temp2 GROUP BY temp2.bn ) p ON p.bn = d.bn; The ... represents other fields that aren't really important to solving this problem. The issue is on the the second subquery - it is not using the index I have created and I am not sure why, it seems to be because of the way TEXT fields are handled. The first subquery uses the index I have created and runs quite snappy, however an explain on the second shows a 'Using temporary; Using filesort'. Please see the indexes I have created in the below table create statements. Can anyone help me optimize this? By way of quick explanation the first subquery is meant to only select records that have unique bn's, the second, while it looks a bit wacky (with the max function there which is not being used in the result set) is making sure that only one record from the right part of the join is included in the result set. I've tried changing the ProviderManifestToken to 2000 in my .edmx file, then I started getting "The execution of this query requires the APPLY operator, which is not supported in versions of SQL Server earlier than SQL Server 2005." I tied changing the token to 2005, the "Incorrect syntax near '(' " is back. Can anybody help me to find a workaround for this? Thank you very much in advance!

I'm trying to include a regular expression in the join part of the linq query. from i in collectiona join j in collectionb on Regex.IsMatch(i.name, j.jokered_name) equals true (...) I agree i can push the RegExp check in the where part of the linq query, but i was wondering if it is possible in the join part ? The above code wants an "i equals j" code structure. One thing i think to perform is overriding Equals() which 'll contains the RegEx.IsMatch() stuff and put a simple i equals j in the join part. Any suggestions about my problem ?

  Hi, hoping to get some help with this query, I've worked at it for a while now and can't get it any faster: SELECT date, count(id) as 'visits' FROM dates LEFT OUTER JOIN visits ON (dates.date = DATE(visits.start) and account_id = 40 ) WHERE date >= '2010-12-13' AND date <= '2011-1-13' GROUP BY date ORDER BY date ASC That query takes about 8 seconds to run. I've added indexes on dates.date, visits.start, visits.account_id and visits.start+visits.account_id and can't get it to run any faster.   Basically I'm just unsure as to why this query is failing to execute: (SELECT replies.reply_post, replies.reply_content, replies.reply_date AS d, members.username FROM (replies) AS a INNER JOIN members ON replies.reply_by = members.id) UNION (SELECT posts.post_id, posts.post_title, posts.post_date AS d, members.username FROM (posts) as b WHERE posts.post_set = 0 INNER JOIN members ON posts.post_by = members.id) ORDER BY d DESC LIMIT 5 I'm getting this error: #1064 - You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'a INNER JOIN members ON replies.re' at line 2 All I'm trying to do is select the 5 most recent rows (dates) from these two tables. I've tried Join, union etc and I've seen numerous queries where people have put another query after the FROM statement and that just makes no logical sense to me as to how that works? Am I safe to say that you can join the same table from two different but joined queries? Or am I taking completely the wrong approach, because frankly I can't seem see how this query is failing despite reading the error message. (The two queries on there own work fine)

  I currently work in technical support for a software/hardware company and for the most part it's a good job, but it's feeling more and more like I'm getting 'stuck' here. No raises in the 5 years I've been here, and lately there seems to be more hiring from the outside than promotion from within. The work I do is more technical than end-user support, as we deal primarily with our field technicians who have a little more technical skill than the general user base. As a result I get into much more technical support issues... often tracking down bugs in our software, finding performance bottlenecks in our database schema, etc. The work I'm most proud of are the development projects I've come up with on my own, and worked on during lunch breaks and slow periods in Support. Over the years I've written a number of useful utilities for the company. Diagnostic type applications that several departments use and appreciate. These include apps that simulate our various hardware devices, log file analysis, time-saving utilities for our work processes, etc. My best projects have been the hardware simulation programs, which are the type of thing we probably wouldn't have put a full-time developer on had anyone thought to do it, but they've ended up being popular and useful enough to be used by development, QA, R&D, and Support. They allow us to interface our software with simulated hardware, rather than clutter up our work areas with bulky, hard to acquire equipment. Since starting here my life has moved forward (married, kid, one more on the way), but it feels like my career has not. I still earn what I earned walking in the door my first day. Company budget is tight, bonuses have gone down, and no raises or cost of living / inflation adjustments either. As the sole source of income for my family I feel I need to do more, and I'd like to have a more active role in creating something at work, not just cleaning up other people's mistakes. I enjoy technical work, and I think development is the next logical step in my career. I'd like to bring some "legitimacy" to my part-time development work, and make myself a more skilled and valuable employee. Ultimately if this can help me better support my family, that would be ideal. Can I make the jump to professional developer? I have an engineering degree, but no formal education in computer science. I write WinForms apps using the .NET framework, do some freelance web development, have volunteered to write software for a nonprofit, and have started experimenting with programming microcontrollers. I enjoy learning new things in the limited free time I have available. I think I have the aptitude to take on a development role, even in an 'apprentice' capacity if such an option is possible. Have any of you moved into development like this? Do any of you developers have any advice or cautionary tales? Are there better career options I haven't thought of? I welcome any and all related comments and thank you in advance for posting them.

• RPC Server Unavailable When Trying to Join W2003 Server to W2003 Active Directory Domain

  I have an Active Directory Domain with a Windows 2003 Standard SP2 Server as the DC. When trying to join an additional Windows 2003 Standard SP2 server to the domain I get message "The following error occurred attempting to join the domain 'My Domain'. The RPC Server is unavailable. The computer is actually added to the Active Directory Computers. I can even right-click and Manage it. I can access file shares from the DC on the other server and vice versa. I can ping the DC from this server and ping the server from the DC using the computer name. The time on both server is the same more or less to the second. RPC service is running on both servers. I can join other computers to the domain and there are no other issues with the domain. Windows Firewall disabled on both computers. NetSetup.LOG shows: NetpSetNetloginDomainCache: DSEnumerateDomainTrustsW failed 0x6ba I looked up this WIN32 Error Code: It is RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE.

  I have been using iMovie'09 for two days only. I need to edit some videos and make a DVD for a friend. It happens to me that I want to join two clips together to form one continuous clip, so when I export the video to iDVD, they won't be treat as two different chapters. The most obvious way to do so is to choose Edit-Join Clip, but that menu item was always gray out when I chose two adjacent clips. I tried to highlight two/three adjacent clips, two apart clips etc, but it is still grayed out. I googled for a while but it seems no one knows, anyone knows how to use the "Join Clip"?

• Windows 7 cannot join samba domain

  I have a 3.5.6 samba server with a LDAP backend (both on Debian 6.0). I've been successfully adding Windows XP machines to the domain for years. I now try to add Windows 7. I have made the recommended registry changes, but I don't have any success so far. Here is what happens: 1. I go to computer name, select "Domain" instead of "Workgroup", type in the domain name, click OK. It asks me for the username and password of an account that can add computers to the domain; I enter them. After about 40 seconds, I get the following message: The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "ITIA": The specified computer account could not be found. Contact an administrator to verify the account is in the domain. If the account has been deleted unjoin, reboot, and rejoin the domain. Despite this, the samba server successfully creates the computer account. 2. Therefore, if I try again a second time, without deleting the already created computer account, I get a different error: The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "ITIA": The specified account already exists. (Note that until a while ago samba wasn't configured to automatically create computer accounts. What I did whenever I wanted an XP to join was to manually create it. When I first attempted to solve the Windows 7 join problem, I setup samba to do this automatically, as this is what most people do, as I understand, and I thought that it might be related. I haven't attempted to add an XP since I made this change, so I don't know if it works, but whether it works or not, the problem remains.)   I have a client trying to join his newly updated ZFS/Solaris box to my Windows AD 2003/2008 domain. Here is the command he is using and the error he is getting; Console: root@xxx:/etc/inet# smbadm join -u USER DOMAIN After joining DOMAIN the smb service will be restarted automatically.Would you like to continue? • Monads with Join() instead of Bind()

  Monads are usually explained in turns of return and bind. However, I gather you can also implement bind in terms of join (and fmap?) In programming languages lacking first-class functions, bind is excruciatingly awkward to use. join, on the other hand, looks quite easy. I'm not completely sure I understand how join works, however. Obviously, it has the [Haskell] type join :: Monad m = m (m x) - m x For the list monad, this is trivially and obviously concat. But for a general monad, what, operationally, does this method actually do? I see what it does to the type signatures, but I'm trying to figure out how I'd write something like this in, say, Java or similar. (Actually, that's easy: I wouldn't. Because generics is broken. ;-) But in principle the question still stands...) Oops. It looks like this has been asked before: Monad join function Could somebody sketch out some implementations of common monads using return, fmap and join? (I.e., not mentioning >>= at all.) I think perhaps that might help it to sink in to my dumb brain...

• Left outer join in LINQ is showing exception

• Print full path of files and sizes with find in Linux

  Here are the specs: Find all files in / modified after the modification time of /tmp/test, exclude /proc and /sys from the search, and print the full path of the file along with human readable size. Here is what I have so far: find / \( -path /proc -o -path /sys \) -prune -o -newer /tmp/test -exec ls -lh {} \; | less The issue is that the full path doesn't get printed. Unfortunately, ls doesn't support printing the full path! And all solutions I have found that show how to print the full path suggest using find. :| Any ideas? Thanks!

How can I get a full admin account on Windows 7 in my name. (Yes, I know there are reasons not to do this, but that's not my question ;)

• Attempting to install .NET framework 4 *full* installs *client* instead

  On a Win7 SP1 32-bit machine, I initially had .NET 4 client installed and wanted to upgrade to .NET 4 full. I downloaded the full installer dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe from Microsoft. After download the file showed 48.11MB, the correct size for the full package (vs. 41MB for the client). I ran the installer and it first prompted to repair or remove the existing package. I chose to remove, so uninstalled the two parts, 4 extended and 4 client. Reboot. I reran the installer and it began installation, showing that it was installing the client. Though this raised an eyebrow for me, I let it run to completion, thinking it might be reporting the full install in sections. But after completion, I again ended up with 4 extended and 4 client installed! Obviously I am missing something; ideas...?

• Windows Server 2008 R2 - Giving local administrator full rights to all folders

  Hi guys, Is there a quick way to give the local administrator full rights to all folders on the C drive? I am having really hard time with that, I try to give it full rights to some folders (user profiles) but I can't even modify the NTFS permissions in some cases, I get "permission denied" Is there some soft of tutorial or script that will just give the administrator full rights on all folders in the C driver?
