    I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my system. However, I need to install Windows 7 back, and I expect that it would alter GRUB and it did. Right now, my partition on my Software RAID 0 looks like this: nvidia_acajefec1 is Ubuntu 10.10 and nvidia_acajefec3 is Windows 7. I've been following some guides around and I am always stuck at GRUB not able to detect the usual RAID content. I've tried running: sudo grub > root (hd0,0) GRUB complains it couldn't find my hard disk. So I tried: find (hd0,0) And it complains that it couldn't find anything. So I tried: find /boot/grub/stage1 It said "file not found". Here's the text from the console: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ grub Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time.   • Getting "Unable to find a medium containing a live file system" when installing 10.10

    I got this error while trying to install ubuntu 10.10 from a bootable USB stick on to Sony Vaio P series laptop. The disk boots into the language and installation type screen. After that it goes through the splash and pulls up this error: BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-ubuntu11) built in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system After getting this error the installation fails to start. I have used the same USB stick on some other laptops and the installation started as usual. Any help will be appreciated. My installation is i386 and my machine is Vaio P VGN-P610. I've tried every possible thing: Bios: [enable boot external] Boot order: [external] [hard drive] [network boot] Tried 2 different USB drives Tried 2 different external CD drives Tried 6 different downloads of both the desktop and netbook remix. All downloads were checked with MD5SUM. Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 installs properly in every version and from every source. Getting reaaaally frustrated.

  • Install Linux Mint on PC without bootable CD

    Unfortunately my PC's CD drive is not bootable; I have such a mixture of SATA and IDE drives, so until I have more money to redo my controller setup, I can't boot from any cd. Currently, I have a DVD burned with latest version of Linux Mint, and I have an USB drive with an old version of Mint. I have a partition ready to install Linx Mint into, but no idea how to install it, since I can only boot to my hard drive. I am totally unable to boot to CD, so that is definitely out. My main partition is WinXP Pro SP3. Is there software I can use to format my Linux partition, so that I can then just copy Mint over to that partition? Or is there a better way to install linux mint? I have to do it within Windows XP, since that's all that I can boot right now. I have considered Mint4Win, but that doesn't allow a full installation of Linux Mint. Any ideas?

  • Installing ubuntu 12.04, installs but does not boot after it asks me to remove the CD

    I'm Trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my computer. It had an old copy of Windows 7 on it I tried to reformat the hard drive for a fresh install of Ubuntu but I think I messed up the partitions in some way that prevents it from fully loading. I'm able to complete the install fine and use guided partitioning so it should be happy but when it gets about 90% through at the part that ejects the cd and restarts the system it fails. After ejecting the CD and restarting it just loads up the bios lenovo splash screen then purple then black. I can hear a sound from my speakers like some notification sound but there is no text on my screen. I've since gone back in under Rescue System to try and reconfigure the partitions hoping that it will fix it and i've tried several combinations. Currently it's SCST1 (0,0,0) (sda) - 500.1 GB ATA WDC WD5000AAkKX-0 #1 100.0 MB K biosgrub #2 494.1 GB B K ext4 / #3 5.9 GB F swap swap 8.2 kb FREE SPACE I'm not sure if I need to set the ext4 to contain the boot flag but if I don't include at least one partition with the boot flag enabled it complains saying that "The partition table format in use on your disks normally requires you to create a separate partition for boot loader code. This partitionshould be marked for use as an "EFI boot Partition" and should be at least 35 MB in size. Note that this is not hte same as a partition mounted on /boot" Like I said it seems to have installed all of the actual data from the CD it's just not properly booting for some reason

  • Lenovo L440 won't boot into Debian installation CD or Debian-installed HDD

    I have a Lenovo L440 and a Lenovo X61. I want to install Debian Wheezy on thee L440. This morning, the L440 could successfully boot into Windows 8 from it's hard drive. I created an installation of Wheezy on a USB flash drive with Unetbootin. I created an installation CD of Wheezy with Unetbootin. The X61 can successfully boot into the flash drive. The X61 does not have a CD drive. I have attempted to boot from the live CD and the flash drive from the L440's boot menu. In both cases, the screen fades to black, and then returns me to the boot menu with no error message. I removed the L440's hard drive, and installed it in the X61. I then successfully installed Wheezy onto the hard drive from the flash drive. I'm able to boot into the Wheezy hard drive on the L440. After replacing the hard drive into the L440. I booted from the hard drive from the boot menu. Once again, the screen fades to black, and then returns me to the boot menu with no error message. What's the deal?

  • CD Drive not discovered

    I have a self built computer. it uses a P6T Deluxe motherboard, which has both SATA and IDE ports. This was built several years ago, and had an IDE CD/DVD drive. This drive started going bad (would not burn CDs correctly), so I decided to replace it. I had difficultly finding an IDE DVD drive, so I bought a SATA DVD drive. I opened the comnputer, took out the old DVD drive. I left the IDE cable in place, connected to the motherboard, but it is not connected to any drives. I hooked up the new DVD drive, both power and with a SATA data cable (SATA port 3 if I recall). (Sony Optiarc 24x , Newegg URL: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118067 ) When I power on my computer, the drive does NOT show up in Explorer. I can hit the DVD eject button, and the drive will open up, so I know it at least is getting power. I thought, maybe something in the BIOS. When I go to BIOS, boot devices, it shows (1) floppy, (2) my hard drive (3) ATAPI CD Drive. The only other possible BIOS option I could find was uder 'Storage Configuration'. Configure Storage as: My setting is RAID, since I am using two drives in a RAID configuration. Other options were IDE and ACHI. Other than trying to find an IDE DVD drive, is there anything else I can try? The drive does not show up at all in Windows Explorer. I did put in a CD thinking that might help, but nothing happened.     It started in ubuntu 13.04-I was doing what I usually do,I opened brasero to make an audio cd from a few mp3 audio files..When burned I noticed the files on cd were in wav format.I then tried k3b with the same result.At that point and because of several issues with 13.04 I formatted my hdd and dropped back to ubuntu 12.04.On 12.04 I tried brasero and k3b once again with same results.I know that when I used to burn cd s using brasero they were burned to cd in mp3 format not wave.Can anyone tell me a fix for this?I have restricted codecs installed.

    I have an Xbox classic (not 360) that I use as a HTPC using XBMC. But today a rogue application activated "Xbox Live" mode, which updated the system to boot into Xbox Live instead of XBMC. I have no idea what Xbox Live is - I don't use the Xbox for gaming, only as a HTPC for media. So how do I get XBMC back on the Xbox? All instructions I've seen seem to start with "use FTP" - but the Xbox Live dashboard doesn't appear to have an FTP server.

    I had recently formatted my system only to find out i have lost the cd key to my original cd. i had used the option to enter the product key later. Yes, i know its a stupid thing to do but i bought the cd in 2008 from a retail store and i lost the original packaging. the actual label on the cd is includes service pack version 2002 .@2004 microsoft corporation reserved. There are some numbers on the back side of the cd in the inner ring. i cant for the life of me figure out how what is the use of the genuine cd i have with me when i cant seem to activate it. what exactly is the advantage of having the original cd in your possession in situations like this?. i have tried the unattend.txt and it doesnt contain the correct key. and there does not exist any winnnt.sif file in the cd. where on the cd or in it can i find the product id information i stay in india . and my attempts at trying the microsoft support site keeps getting me directed to page which says they had stopped support for windows xp in 2011. lets say by some miracle i do contact microsoft. what information would i have to provide them? and would they be giving me the product key for my cd key from their database? or a new key?

  • Norton Ghost 15 prompts for a recovery CD when restoring a disk image. Why?

    I used ghost 15 to create a drive image. Now I'm trying to restore that image onto identical hardware to recover. However after the whole image has been placed onto the new disk/hardware, at the end of the copy, ghost is asking me to enter the recovery CD. But the recovery CD is in the danged drive(assuming that the recovery CD is the CD used to recover the image)! So first, if I'm just imaging a drive, why is norton asking me for some recovery CD? Second, what recovery CD is norton talking about, if it's not the ghost CD? Does it want me to give it the windows OS recovery CD that sipped with the original hardware? Damn you norton ghost!!!

    I can access my local dev site on my local pc, eg: http://mysite But I cannot access the live site, even though it works fine on other pc's: http://www.mysite.com The live site gives the error in Firefox: Server Not Found. Pinging www.mysite.com gives the error:"Ping request could not find host www.mysite.com" hosts file: 127.0.0.1 mysite I changed the hosts file to the following and rebooted: 127.0.0.1 mysitedev I'm running on XP, and have cleared the DNS cache using: ipconfig /flushdns I have verified the live site is up using: http://www.isup.me/ and the site loads fine using my phone. What could be preventing my local pc from accessing the live site?

I tried HWMonitor and it works great except it doesn't have live logging. I need live logging because the system I'm using seems to overheat and shutdown (assuming it's related to overheating) and I'd like to catch the failing point.

    Many of us have embraced the podcasting revolution enabled by rss feeds and podcatchers. Alot of sites now broadcast live streams of what is eventually edited into a podcast. In most cases listening to the live stream gets you the info several days sooner then the podcast. So I was wondering if anybody knows of a notification protocol / app that allows me to auto tune into certain streams when they go live, or based on a schedule. I imagine twitter could be used for the notification but It'd be better not to be tied to a proprietary service.     At my new job, I have a production server with the following qualities: Windows (XP I think), ancient hardware Absolutely vital database No backups whatsoever Everyone in the company has full admin rights, the passwords are stored in a .txt on the global share No installers, except for the OS The machine itself is sitting on a wooden shelf 5 feet above the ground against an external wall with frequent truck traffic on the other side; the shelf is already bent from the constant load Hasn't been rebooted in $DEITY knows how long, my predecessor wasn't even sure if it would survive it UPS is installed, but since everything is hooked up to it, it would last 10 minutes tops No spare parts or hardware budget How do I make a full backup with minimal impact on the server? I'm not sure how close it is to a total meltdown. For all I know, plugging in a USB stick could kill the company, and of course it will be all my fault, since "it was running fine before you touched it". The ideal solution would be a VM, so I have a test environment as well (separate of course).

  • Why Windows Live Photo Gallery stopped displaying thumbnails, and how to fix it?

    I now get this instead, for most (but not all) photos. This is the icon which represents the WLPG application, I think. Some observations: I can see the thumbnails fine in Explorer, which is where a lot of other people have this problem. My C:\ drive may have temporarily filled up at some point recently, but then was cleaned up. Double-clicking on the photo will display it fine, so I know it's not file corruption or permissions issues. Thanks
