• What tool do you use to organise your tasks?

  Hi, I've been a web developer for four years now and I've yet to come across a nice piece of software that allows me to manage my day to day tasks well. In theory, I should be able to just pull up a textfile and write: write test scripts check code into svn remember to go home But obviously this isnt very usable. I've tried stuff like Ta-da List but it feels quite limited. JIRA is great for bug tracking but what if I have to remember to go to the bank at 2pm. Is there anything piece of software out there that helps organise programmers? I'm really interested in hearing what you guys have to say on this one. Thanks.

• Are there serious companies that don't use version-control and continuous integration? Why?

  A colleague of mine was under the impression that our software department was highly advanced, as we used both a build server with continuous integration, and version control software. This did not match my point of view, as I only know of one company I which made serious software and didn't have either. However, my experience is limited to only a handful of companies. Does anyone know of any real company (larger than 3 programmers), which is in the software business and doesn't use these tools? If such a company exists, are there any good reason for them not doing so?

• Encourage the use of markup files as documentation in enterprise [closed]

  To make it eaiser to do version control and diff files of documentation, use markup files, such as HTML: html/xhtml, XML: docbook, Wiki: markdown to replace doc/docx. docx is too complex and lengthy. For html, no extra document generation required. Programmers can write html directly and end users / managers can use any web browsers to view the document. For custom XML or Wiki formats, viewers are required to view the document or converters are used to export to pdf/doc. Is such move becoming popular in enterprise context? Why or why not?

  I'm good with understanding technology and implementing it. At least that is what I feel. But it seems that when I come across experienced programmers they point out that my logic is weak. I feel that I would need some time with real programming to improve it. But nobody is ready to give that time to me. I'm just about starting my carer and it often feels disheartening to hear this. • How do I become a programmer and not some guy that can type some C?

  From what I understand, programming has a lot more to it than learning syntax, that it involves an understanding of what happens under-the-hood and even more. Currently, I am just a guy that can pump out a few loops in Python or C and maybe make a small-scope Zork clone as the hight of skill. So, what can I do to become an actual programmer? How can I find out what I need to know and learn it? I know this has been vaguely asked before, but I kind of want an answer of how as opposed to the whats that I have seen. Would it be nice to know how real programmers define being a programmer? yes. Is that going to actually help me (or anyone else) learn what they need to learn? no. (well, maybe.)

• Intentional misspellings to avoid reserved words

  I often see code that include intentional misspellings of common words that for better or worse have become reserved words: klass or clazz for class: Class clazz = ThisClass.class kount for count in SQL: count(*) AS kount Personally I find this decreases readability. In my own practice I haven't found too many cases where a better name couldn't have been used — itemClass or recordTotal. However, it's so common that I can't help but wonder if I'm the only one? Anyone have any advice or even better, quoted recommendations from well-respected programmers on this practice?

• Aren't there compilers better at telling the programmer what's wrong in a code ?

  I have worked a little while with the Microsoft compiler from Visual C++ but I worked a long time with G++, and I remember often having bad times understanding what was wrong in my code with the former. Beside binary code generation and optimisation, I think this is a very important feature of a C++ compiler: giving the programmer a clue that makes him understand as fast as possible what is wrong with his/her code. I can understand some programmers understand programming as some sort of "competition" to make less errors, but to me that's a counter productive opinion. I once tried Clang compiler for C from the LLVM thingie, I didn't use it for a long time, but I was impressed on how explicit and easy to understand the error messages were. • What is the simplest human readable configuration file format?

  Current configuration file is as follows: mainwindow.title = 'test' mainwindow.position.x = 100 mainwindow.position.y = 200 mainwindow.button.label = 'apply' mainwindow.button.size.x = 100 mainwindow.button.size.y = 30 logger.datarate = 100 logger.enable = True logger.filename = './test.log' This is read with python to a nested dictionary: { 'mainwindow':{ 'button':{ 'label': {'value':'apply'}, ... }, 'logger':{ datarate: {'value': 100}, enable: {'value': True}, filename: {'value': './test.log'} }, ... } Is there a better way of doing this? The idea is to get XML type of behavior and avoid XML as long as possible. The end user is assumed almost totally computer illiterate and basically uses notepad and copy-paste. Thus the python standard "header + variables" type is considered too difficult. The dummy user edits the config file, able programmers handle the dictionaries. Nested dictionary is chosen for easy splitting (logger does not need or even cannot have/edit mainwindow parameters).

• Web Usage Policies at "Best Companies to Work For"

  For any company that has made it onto a "Best Companies to Work For" list* in 2010 that hires programmers, what restrictions on web usage do they have in place? Does that company view unrestricted internet access as a benefit to their employees even if they might use it for non-work related reasons? If you can provide a link to back up this information, even better. (* I don't want to promote any specific publication, but they are easy enough to find.) My hypothesis is that a company that aspires to be one of the best needs to provide fairly unrestricted internet access and I'm trying to test it.

• Looking for a very subtle unit testing example

  In the context of Continuous Integration, I need to teach unit testing to a 20-people audience of programmers. Everything will be all right, but I am still trying to find the perfect unit testing example. More than writing tests like a robot, I want to show that unit testing can help prevent very subtle errors. I am thinking of the following scenario to happen when doing a live TDD demo: the test cases would already be written, we would have to write methods together, most of us would naturally have forgotten to handle a specific case for a method, everyone would then be surprised, when seeing that all tests don't pass, the failing test would make us think more and realize that we forgot an important case. My question will probably finish as "too broad" or "not clear what you are asking", but we never know, one of you might have a great idea. Your answer can use Java and JUnit, though any other language will be fine since only the idea will matter.

• Which programming career path fits my terms? [closed]

  I am sick and tired of my enterprise development job, I need some programming direction like this: Demanded in jobs-market Demanded in freelance market Can use Ubuntu as development environment Not enterprise. Standalone, mobile, web-development, anything, just not enterprise. Basically, I need a programming direction which doesn't need 20 developers, terribly big databases systems and long going projects with intense long-term support, I don't want enterprise job where a lot of people are working on one terribly big project and do modules to it all day long. Instead, I need something where: Projects change pretty often Projects are little, or medium-sized (in terms of code, modules and people working on it) but still not enterprise-sized Possible for freelance, solo-development, or at least requires a team of 3-4 programmers. Not like in enterprise where you feel like a drop in the sea with your 50 classes while system itself has hundreds of classes. Suggestions please?

• Documenting a REST interface with a flowchart

  Does anybody have suggestions on creating a flowchart representation of a REST-style web interface? In the interest of supplying thorough documentation to co-developers, I've been toying around in dia modeling the interface for modifying and generating a product resource: This particular system begins to act differently with user authentication/resource counts, so before I make modifications, I'm looking for some clarification: Complexity: how would you simplify the overall structure to make this easier to read? Display Symbol: is this appropriate for representing a page? Manual Operation Symbol: is this appropriate for representing a user action like a button click? • Decision for Unchecked Exceptions in Scala

  As a java programmer, I have always been critical of Unchecked Exceptions. Mostly programmers use it as an en-route to coding easiness only to create trouble later. Also the programs (though untidy) with checked exceptions are much robust compared to unchecked counterparts. Surprisingly in Scala, there is nothing called Checked Exceptions. All the Java checked and unchecked are unchecked in Scala. What is the motivation behind this decision? For me it opens wide range of problems when using any external code. And if by chance the documentation is poor, it results in KILL.

• Are programming languages perfect?

  I'm not sure if I'm being naive, as I'm still a student, but a curious question came to my mind. In another thread here, a user stated that in order to protect against piracy of your software, you must have perfect software. So is it possible to have perfect software? This is an extremely silly hypothetical situation, but if you were to gather the most talented and gifted programmers in the world and have them spend years trying to create 'perfect' software, could they be successful? Could it be that not a single exploitable bug could be created? Or are there flaws in programming languages that can still, no matter how hard you try, cause bugs that allow your program to be hijacked? As you can tell, I know nothing about security, but essentially what I'm asking is: is the reason why software is easily exploitable the fact that imperfect human beings create it, or that imperfect programming languages are being used?

• Best accounting software for freelance/contractor programmer? [closed]

  I know this isn't exactly a programming question but I am hoping to find some programmers who freelance or do contractor work in the US. I have started to work on side jobs and have been billing my clients using Paypal. I then would store those records in a Google excel doc but realize this will get out of hand as time goes on and am looking for a good solution. I am no accountant so I am not sure of everything I would need but I am guessing basic invoicing, expenses, reporting, integration with paypal, etc.. Any contractors or freelancers in here could recommend what they use? I have researched a few but would like to hear what other people are using and how it is working out for them. And here comes the problem - there are many developers who look really great at the interview, seem to know the technology you need and have a good job background, but after two moths of work, you find out that they are not able to work in a team, writing some code takes them very long time, and moreover, the result is not as good as it should be. So, do you use any formalized tests (are there any?)? How do you recognize a good programmer - and a good person? Are there any simple 'good' questions that might reveal the future problems? ...or is it just about your 'feeling' about the person (ie., mainly your experience), and trying him out? • What are the most common stumbling blocks when it comes to learning programming, in order of difficulty?

  I seem to remember that linked lists, recursion, pointers, and memory management are all good examples of stumbling blocks - places where the aspiring programmer typically ends up spending significant time trying to understand a concept before moving on and improving, and many end up giving up and not improving. • Alternatives for saving data with jquery

  I am not sure if this question is considered too broad, but I would like to reach out to my fellow programmers to see what alternatives are out there for saving data using jquery. I have a content management system that generates an set of HTML pages called an IETM (Interactive Electronic Technical Manual). The HTML pages are written in HTML and uses jquery.   I would like to ask on method parameters design consideration. I am usually deciding between using individual variables as parameters versus grouping them to a class or dictionary as one parameter. Is there such a rule when you should use individual parameter against using a class or a dictionary to group the parameter? Individual parameter - Straight forward, strongly typed Dictionary parameter - Very extensible, like HTTP request but cannot be strongly typed.   In comparison with an open source license and requesting donations, is a free-for-open-source-projects (or free for non-commercial developers) closed source and otherwise commercial project likely to get more license fees? Or just to alienate potential users? Assume the project has value to programmers - I'm looking for generalizations here, though specific examples comparing existing projects will be very interesting. What I have in mind involves code generating programming utilities. And one issue I can think of, either way, is a near total inability to enforce any license restrictions. • What is Perl's relation with hackers?

  I know Perl is a language revered by many hackers (as in hacker vs cracker) and respected by many good programmers for its expressiveness. I also realize it is useful to know and it's very handy at generalizing common Unix tasks (Unix here includes Linux and Cygwin). I also know that being a good hacker probably means you're a good programmer in general (references on this one are sparse around the web, but about everything Paul Graham has ever written seems approving of this statement to me). So my question is whether there is a reason that attracts hackers to Perl in particular? Will learing Perl improve my general programming, problem-solving and hacking skills if done properly? Does it present unique tools that are more useful to a hacker?

• How essential is it to make a service layer?

  I started building an app in 3 layers (DAL, BL, UI) [it mainly handles CRM, some sales reports and inventory]. A colleague told me that I must move to service layer pattern, that developers came to service pattern from their experience and it is the better approach to design most applications. He said it would be much easier to maintain the application in the future that way. Personally, I get the feeling that it's just making things more complex and I couldn't see much of a benefit from it that would justify that. This app does have an additional small partial ui that uses some (but only few) of the desktop application functions so I did find myself duplicating some code (but not much). Just because of some code duplication I wouldn't convert it to be service oriented, but he said I should use it anyway because in general it's a very good architecture, why programmers are so in love with services?? I tried to google on it but I'm still confused and can't decide what to do.
