  • Statement hierarchy in programming languages

    - by sudo
I quickly wrote an interpreter for some sort of experimental programing language i came up with, in PHP (yes, in PHP). The language itself doesn't have anything really special, I just wanted to give it a try. I got the basic things working (Hello World, input to output, string manipulation, arithmetics) but I'm getting stuck with the management of blocks and grouped statements. What I mean is: PHP and most other languages let you do this: ((2+2)*(8+2)+2), of course not only with mathematical computations. My program structure currently consists of a multidimensional array built like this: ID => Type (Identifier, String, Int, Newline, EOF, Comma, ...) Contents (If identifier, int or string) How could I allow statements to be executed in a defined order like in the PHP example above?

  • Formal Equivalence between programming languages

    - by Ketan
Hello We have 2 languages which are (informally) semantically equivalent but syntactically different. One is xml and another is script based. How can I go about formally proving that both languages are in fact equivalent. Script approach is just a convenient way to write a same program that would be tedious to write in xml. Thanks Ketan

  • Chart for deciphering terms in different programming languages

    - by Nathan Adams
This has been bugging me every since I started to use Python - in PHP you have this ability to use a string as a key in an array. PHP calls these associative arrays. Python calls these dictionaries. Does anyone know of a premade chart that will let me see what the different terminology is in different languages. For example: PHP             | Python Assosicative array | Dictionary

  • Best beginner programming language?

    - by mtwisterr
I want to learn a simple language so I can code simple things maybe eventually a game but I don't know where to start. I can code simple things using apple script but you can't do that much with that and it only works on macs. I have a mac and a dell so something that I could code and run on both would be nice. Also all my school offers is java so if you have any ideas on how to learn the language that would be appreciated. Thanks

Currently I can program in: C#, C++, JAVA and PHP. The next summer, I intend to start learning a new language. Can you help me suggesting what must I start reading about? I heard about Perl, Python and Lisp.. but I do not know if any of them will worth more than what I already got in my other languages.. Also please mention how much your suggest language is demanded in career market.. I do not want to learn an obsolete language.. Thanks

  • Socket programming question

    - by dfddf
I am given the following declaration: char inbuff[500], *ptr; int n, bufferlen; Write a program segement to receive a message having 500 bits from the TCP socket sock and store this message in inbuff. My answer is: n = recv( sock, inbuff, strlen( inbuff ), 0 ); However, I am not sure why *ptr is given in the declaration. So, I would like ask, what is the purpose of the pointer in this question?? Or my program segement is wrong? Thank you for all of yours help first!

  • Java Port Socket Programming Error

    - by atrus-darkstone
Hi- I have been working on a java client-server program using port sockets. The goal of this program is for the client to take a screenshot of the machine it is running on, break the RGB info of this image down into integers and arrays, then send this info over to the server, where it is reconstructed into a new image file. However, when I run the program I am experiencing the following two bugs: The first number recieved by the server, no matter what its value is according to the client, is always 49. The client only sends(or the server only receives?) the first value, then the program hangs forever. Any ideas as to why this is happening, and what I can do to fix it? The code for both client and server is below. Thanks! • Functional programming approach for Java's input/output streams

    - by Elazar Leibovich
I'm using Java's DataInputStream with scala to parse some simple binary file (which is very bad exprerience due to the lack of unsigned types, even in scala, but that's a different story). However I find myself forced to use mutable data structure, since Java's streams are inherently state preserving entities. What's a good design to wrap Java's streams with nice functional data structure?

  • Projects/Challenges for learning programming

    - by DMan
Not sure if this has been asked before, and I'm making this a wiki... Anyways, I'm sure you've heard of Project Euler. My question is if there are any other sites like this? You know, more challenges and things for programmers to hone their skills? I like Euler but it's strictly math-based, and I'd like to expand it a little to other topics.

  • xcode compile console application - c programming

    - by Alan
Is it possible to use Xcode using iPhone 3.1.3 SDK to compile a standard C program that will work on the iphone? I'm trying to use xcode to compile a basic 'hello world' but to no avail. Do I need to obtain an additional application template or am I just missing something?

  • Is this bad style of programming(C#) ?

    - by m0s
Hi, so in my program I have parts where I use try catch blocks like this try { DirectoryInfo dirInfo = new DirectoryInfo(someString); //I don't know if that directory exists //I don't know if that string is valid path string... it could be anything //Some operations here } catch(Exception iDontCareWhyItFailed) { //Didn't work? great... we will say: somethings wrong, try again/next one } Of course I probably could do checks to see if the string is valid path (regex), then I would check if directory exists, then I could catch various exceptions to see why my routine failed and give more info... But in my program it's not really necessary. Now I just really need to know if this is acceptable, and what would a pro say/think about that. Thanks a lot for attention.

  • AIX specific socket programming query

    - by kumar_m_kiran
Hi All, Question 1 From SUSE man pages, I get the below details for socket connect options If the initiating socket is connection-mode, then connect() shall attempt to establish a connection to the address specified by the address argument. If the connection cannot be established immediately and O_NONBLOCK is not set for the file descriptor for the socket, connect() shall block for up to an unspecified timeout interval until the connection is established. If the timeout interval expires before the connection is established, connect() shall fail and the connection attempt shall be aborted. If connect() is interrupted by a signal that is caught while blocked waiting to establish a connection, connect() shall fail and set errno to [EINTR], but the connection request shall not be aborted, and the connection shall be established asynchronously. Question : Is the above contents valid for AIX OS (especially the connection time-out, timed wait ...etc)?Because I do not see it in AIX man pages (5.1 and 5.3) Question 2 I have a client socket whose attributes are a. SO_RCVTIMEO ,SO_SNDTIMEO are set for 5 seconds. b. AF_INET and SOCK_STREAM. c. SO_LINGER with linger on and time is 5 seconds. d. SO_REUSEADDR is set. Note that the client socket is not O_NONBLOCK. Question : Now since O_NONBLOCK is not set and SO_RCVTIMEO and SO_SNDTIMEO is set for 5 seconds, does it mean a. connect in NON Blocking or Blocking? b. If blocking, is it timed blocking or "infinite" time blocking? c. If it is infinite, How do I establish a "connect" system call which is O_BLOCKING with timeout to t secs. Sorry if the questions are be very naive. Thanks in advance for your input.

  • Programming Quiz [closed]

    - by arin-s-rizk
Hi one of my mates sent me this quiz see if you can guess the answers I will post mine later. In this quiz, some tasks related to the compilation process are listed. For each one of them, specify the part of the compiler that is responsible of performing it. Here are the possible answers: Lexical analyzer Parser Semantic analyzer None of the above Just fill the right choice (the number only) in the blank after each task: Checking that the parentheses in an expression are balanced _ _ _ _ _ Removing comments from the program _ _ _ _ _ Grouping input characters into "tokens" _ _ _ _ _ Reporting an error to the programmer about a missing (;) at the end of a C++ statement _ _ _ _ _ Checking if the type of the RHS (Right-Hand Side) of an assignment (=) is compatible with the LHS (Left-Hand Side) variable _ _ _ _ _ Converting the (AST) Abstract Syntax Tree into machine language _ _ _ _ _ Reporting an error about a strange character like '^' in a C++ program _ _ _ _ _ Optimizing the AST _ _ _ _ _
