  • Why the server is not responding?

    Hello! Our server occasionally refuses to serve a simple HTML page. This is happening during a relatively high number of requests. However, the processor is not heavy loaded and there are a lot of free memory. The error seems to occure 1 out of 50 requests in average, depending on the server load. I need to find the source of the problem and take the appropriate actions to eliminate it. I have a suspicion that the problem source is a huge number of incoming network packets. There are 5000 packets per second on average. Traffic - 2 MBits/sec Can this be the cause of the error? There is an interesting thing, in case the server fails to respond, the request string is not logged to access.log by Apache. The error is repeatable from several client computers. DNS is not involved, since I have accessed the server by the IP. I have profiled the problem case with tcpdump utility. These are the good and bad sessions traced by tcpdump. The request is the same in both experiments. Good - server returns response.   • Can I make TCP/IP session to run less than 60 seconds?

    Our server is overloaded with TCP/IP sessions, we have 1200 - 1500 of them. Most of them are hanging in TIME_OUT state. It turns out that a connection in TIME_OUT state occupies a socket until 60 second time-out is elapsed. The problem is that the server gets unresponsive and many clients are not getting served. I have made a simple test: download an XML file from the server with Internet Explorer 8.0 The download finishes in a fraction of second. But then I see that the TCP/IP connection is hanging in TIME_OUT state for 60 seconds. Is there any way to get rid of TIME_OUT waiting or make it less to free the socket for new connections? I understand why TCP/IP connection enters TIME_OUT state, but I don't understand why Internet Explorer does not close the connection after the XML file download is over. The details. Our server runs web service written in Perl (mod-perl). The service provides weather data to clients. Client is a Flash appication (actually Flash ActiveX control embedded in Windows application).     I'm aware that this is something people can easily program, but I'm not familiar with those things, so I was hoping there was an easier solution. I've edited a large database of questions, including sorting, and ended up getting all the question ID's mixed up. I'm trying to do this in Notepad++, but any other suggestions are welcome. I'm wondering if there's a way to search for a string (ex. "Question[any number]") and replace the numbers with first 1, then 2, et.c. For clarification, this is how one question looks like: TriviaBot_Questions[3]['Question'][63] = "Acronyms: What does WTT stand for?"; TriviaBot_Questions[3]['Answers'][63] = {"Want To Trade"}; TriviaBot_Questions[3]['Category'][63] = 7; TriviaBot_Questions[3]['Points'][63] = 1; TriviaBot_Questions[3]['Hints'][63] = {}; and the next question, as is now, is not followed by 64. It might be 245 or 1029, and regardless of which number it is, I want it replaced with "previous number + 1", basically.

    Our Flash web-widget has got highly popular. It is downloaded around 100,000 times per day. And that is the problem. Our server bandwidth is too narrow to deliver the widget to the clients fast. The widget is loaded very slow. Probably 20 times slower than before (at peak times). Probably I have choosen not the right hoster for my task - delivering 1 MB Flash widget to 100,000 users per day. What is the best hosting solution in my case? I'm not good at server administration so forgive me if I sound naive. The details are the following.     I have a IPostInsertEventListener implementation like public class NHibernateEventListener : IPostInsertEventListener, IPostUpdateEventListener which catches some entity inserts and does an additional insert to another table for ETL. Essentially it requires references to the Nhibernate, Domain entity and Repository<> Now where do I go about adding this class? If I add it to ApplicationServices I’ll end up referencing Nhibernate at that layer. If I add this to the Data layer, I’ll have to reference Domain (circular). How do I go implementing this class with S#arp principles? Any thoughts?

    The master page in my web application does authentication and loads up the user entity using a Get. After this whenever the user object is needed by the usercontrols or any other class I do a Load. Normally nhibernate is supposed to load the object from cache or return the persistent loaded object whenever Load of called. But this is not the behavior shown by my web application. NHprof always shows the sql whenever Load is called. How do I verify the correct behavior of Load? I use the S#arp architecture framework.

RepositoryWithTypedId does not expose a Save method Related question. This tells you the reason, but I haven't found out the Sharp Architecture way to do a Save.

  • Avoiding dog-piling or thundering herd in a memcached expiration scenario

    I have the result of a query that is very expensive. It is the join of several tables and a map reduce job. This is cached in memcached for 15 minutes. Once the cache expires the queries are obviously run and the cache warmed again. But at the point of expiration the thundering herd problem issue can happen. One way to fix this problem, that I do right now is to run a scheduled task that kicks in the 14th minute. But somehow this looks very sub optimal to me. Another approach I like is nginx’s proxy_cache_use_stale updating; mechanism. The webserver/machine continues to deliver stale cache while a thread kicks in the moment expiration happens and updates the cache. Has someone applied this to memcached scenario though I understand this is a client side strategy? If it benefits, I use Django.
