  • How do I grant a site's applet an AllPermission privilege?

    - by nahsra
I'd like to specify certain applets to run with java.security.AllPermission on my computer (for debugging and security testing). However, I don't want to enable all applets that I run to have this permission. So, editing my user Java policy file (which I have ensured is the correct policy file through testing), I try to put this value: grant codeBase "http://host_where_applet_lives/-" { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; This value fails when the applet tries to do something powerful (create a new Thread, in my case). However, when I put the following value: grant { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; The applet is able to perform the powerful operation. The only difference is the lack of a codeBase attribute. An answer to a similar question asked here [1] seemed to suggest (but never show or prove) that AccessController.doPrivileged() calls may be required. To me, this sounds wrong as I don't need that call when I grant the permissions to all applets (the second example I showed). Even if this is a solution, littering the applets I run with AccessController.doPrivileged() calls is not easy or necessarily possible. To top it off, my tests show that this just doesn't work anyway. But I'm happy to hear more ideas around it. • CertMgr fails trying to import an SPC file

    - by nsr81
We have an SPC files which came with the Cisco IP Communicator installer. It needs to be imported into the localMachine ROOT store. However, which the certmgr.exe is run against this SPC file, it errors out. Doesn't matter if it's run from within the installer or manually. The commands I've tried using are: certmgr.exe -add -all CDPcredentials.spc -s -r localMachine root The result displayed is: Error: Failed to save to the destination store CertMgr Failed There is no other information, no log file, nothing in the eventviewer. I's almost as if the ROOT store is in a read-only state. I would also like to point out that I'm able to import single certificates. Just not an SPC files, which contains multiple certificates. I have also tried different versions of the CertMgr utility. Running on Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit. Any assistance would be appreciated.

  • sudo: must be setuid root

    - by Phuong Nguyen
Recently, due to some messy stuff with master boot record, I have to re-install my Ubuntu. Before doing that, I back up all folder (exclude root, bin, sbin, tmp, media, mnt) to a NTFS partition. After installation of Ubuntu, I copied back all the folder using a nautilus (running by sudo nautilus). After that, I reboot my computer. And boom, now I cannot run sudo any more, my network services cannot run. When I run sudo from a terminal, I ge "must be setuid root" error. In ubuntu, root account is disabled by default, I don't know why all these files is no longer under ownership of my account. How would I recover back?

  • Root access on media temple.com dv server

    - by Chris M
This may be a dumb question. I just purchased dv access at media temple.com. I set up root access as required, set up a root access password. Now, for the life of me I can not figure out how this password gets used. Everywhere i try to use the password it does not work. Even tried to ssh with Putty and that didnt work either. Can somebody possibly explain to me what this root access is and how I use it. Im a newbie just trying to learn something new.

  • Play PlayStation Games on a Rooted Nook Simple Touch

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Just when you feel like you’ve seen it all, some guy comes along and shows you how he can play original PlayStation games on his ebook reader. Check out the video to see the surprisingly full-speed–albeit black and white–graphics in action. The secret sauce in Sean’s cool setup? He’s rooted the device and installed Free PlayStation Emulator (FPSE) on it–along with the NoRefresh hack–to enjoy touch-screen controls and PS emulation. The whole thing is shockingly smooth; once you get past the choppy intro videos, the games run at full speed. [via Hack A Day] HTG Explains: Why Do Hard Drives Show the Wrong Capacity in Windows? • Launching mysql server: same permissions for root and for user

    - by toinbis
Hi folks, have been directed here from stackoverflow here, am reposting the question and adding my.cnf at the end of a post. so far in my 10+ years experience with linux, all the permission problems I've ever encountered, have been successfully solved with chmod -R 777 /path/where/the/problem/has/occured (every lie has a grain of truth in it :) This time the trick doesn't work, so I'm turning to you for help. I'm compiling mysql server from scratch with zc.buildout (www . buildout . org). I do launch it by executing /home/toinbis/.../parts/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe, this works. The thing is that i'll be launching this from within supervisor (supervisord . org) script, and when used on the deployment server, it'll need it to be launched with root permissions(so that nginx server, launched with the same script, would have access to 80 port). The problem is that sudo /home/toinbis/.../parts/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe, fails, generating the error, posted bellow, in mysql error log (apache and nginx works as expected). http://lists.mysql.com/mysql/216045 suggests, that "there are two errors: A missing table and a file system that mysqld doesn't have access to". Mysqldatadir and all the mysql server binary files has 777 permissions, talbe mysql.plugin does exist and has 777 permissions (why Can't open the mysql.plugin table?), "sudo touch mysql_datadir/tmp/file" does create file (why Can't create/write to file /home/toinbis/.../runtime/mysql_datadir/tmp/ib4e9Huz?). chgrp -R mysql mysql_datadir and adding "root, toinbis, mysql" users to mysql group ( cat /etc/group | grep mysql outputs mysql:x:124:root,toinbis,mysql) has no effect - when i launch it as a casual user, it starts, when as a root - it fails. Does mysql server, even started as root, tries to operate as other, let's say, 'mysql' user? but even in that case, adding mysql user to mysql group and making all the mysql_datadirs files belong to mysql group should make things work smoothly. I do know that it might be a better idea to simply to launch one the nginx as root and mysql - as just a user, but this error irritated me enough so to devote enough energy so not to only "make things work", but to also make things work exactly as i wanted it initially, so to have a proof of concept that it's possible. and this is the generated error: 091213 20:02:55 mysqld_safe Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /home/toinbis/.../runtime/mysql_datadir /home/toinbis/.../parts/mysql/libexec/mysqld: Table 'plugin' is read only 091213 20:02:55 [ERROR] Can't open the mysql.plugin table. • I have 2 different GEdits?

    - by aserwin
When I load GEdit, it is different from sudo GEdit. Normal GEdit gives me Gtk warnings in the console, and ithas a different look. When I install plugins on either version, it doesn't reflect on the other. I tried removing gedit and reinstalling, but I get the exact setups (in other words, GEdit didn't actually go away when I removed it) Any advice on how I can actually remove gedit and start over? (I have tried sudo apt-get remove --purge gedit - no joy)

  • Our Server Rooted but exploit doesnt work?

    - by Salina Odelva
Hi everyone. My friend's hosting server got rooted and we have traced some of attacker's commands.. We've found some exploits under /tmp/.idc directory.. We've disconnected the server and are now testing some local kernel exploits that the attacker tried on our server. Here is our kernel version: 2.4.21-4.ELsmp #1 SMP We think that he got root access by the modified uselib() local root exploit but the exploit doesn't work! loki@danaria {/tmp}# ./mail -l ./lib [+] SLAB cleanup child 1 VMAs 32768 The exploit hangs like this.. I've waited over 5 minutes but nothing has happened. I've also tried other exploits but they didn't work.. Any ideas? or experimentations with this exploit? Because we need to find the issue and patch our kernel but we can't understand how he used this exploit to get root... Thanks

  • Amazon EBS root volume persistence

    - by hipplar
When I launch a new Windows EC2 instance I am given a 30 gig root EBS volume. I'm trying to make sure I understand the EBS terminology and want to make sure I understand this correctly: Q: What happens to my data when a system terminates? The data stored on a local instance store will persist only as long as that instance is alive. However, data that is stored on an Amazon EBS volume will persist independently of the life of the instance. What exactly does "instance is alive" mean? If I write files to the root volume and reboot the instance will the files remain? Or do I physically have to terminate (delete) the instance for the root volume to go away? Thanks

  • Ubuntu btrfs: how to remove rootflags=subvol=@ from grub.cfg

    - by mnpria
When i mount "btrfs" as a root filesytem, the mount info is as below: root@ubuntu1304Btrfs:~# mount /dev/mapper/ubuntu1304Btrfs--vg-root on / type btrfs (rw,subvol=@) Is there a way to have a mount info without the "subvol" information ? I have tried executing what was mentioned here. I also updated the grub.cfg. Still rootflags=subvol=@ is not removed. • Is it possible to do a full Android backup without first rooting the phone?

    - by Howiecamp
I'm running stock 2.1 on my Moto Droid and am interested in rooting. My (admittedly weak at this point) understanding is that, in order to perform a backup[*], you need to root first. But in order to root, you've got to replace the 2.1 image with a rooted 2.0.1 or a stock 2.0.1 and then a rooted 2.1. So there's no CYA protection given that you've got to take the risk of replacing the image in order to get root and then do a backup. [*] Ideally, I'd like to backup the stock 2.1 image AND my apps. Am I understanding this correctly, or is there a way to do a backup without first replacing the image?

The munge-fest frantically escalates into some xargs du recycling where -x/-d is actually useful, and a final, gratuitous egrep spits out a list of directories that almost feels like an accomplishment: Linux: 54M etc/gconf 61M opt/quest 77M opt 118M usr/ ##===\ 149M etc 154M root 303M lib/modules 313M usr/java ##====\ 331M lib 357M usr/lib64 ##=====\ 433M usr/lib ##========\ 1.1G usr/share ##=======\ 3.2G usr/local ##========\ 5.4G usr ##<=============Ascending order to parent 94M app/SIP ##<==\ 94M app ##<=======Were reported as 7gb and then corrected by second du with -x. Solaris: 63M etc 490M bb 570M root/cores.ric.20100415 1.7G oec/archive 1.1G root/packages 2.2G root 1.7G oec Guess what? It's really slow. Edit: Are there any bash one-liner heroes out there than can turn my bloated abomination into divine intervention, or at least something resembling gingerly copypasta?

  • Why can't I run virtualenv without root?

    - by James
I'm trying to run virtual env and all the documentation says I don't need to run it as root (and probably shouldn't). If I run it as root, everything works. If I run it without root, I get: [stats@crunch ~]$ virtualenv env Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/virtualenv", line 5, in from pkg_resources import load_entry_point File "/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/pkg_resources.py", line 2655, in working_set.require(requires) File "/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/pkg_resources.py", line 648, in require needed = self.resolve(parse_requirements(requirements)) File "/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/pkg_resources.py", line 546, in resolve raise DistributionNotFound(req) pkg_resources.DistributionNotFound: virtualenv==1.7.1.2 I believe I can change the ownership and it's the same difference, but I'd like to know why this is happening. It's a fresh CentOS 6.2 installation.

  • [SSL] Becoming Root CA

    - by Max13
Hi everybody, I'm the founder of a little non-profit French organization. Currently, we're providing free web and shell hosting. Talking about that, is there a way to become a Trusted Certificate Authority, in order to give free SSL certificates to my customers, but also to avoid being an intermediate (and pay a lot for that), and/or avoid paying a lot for each certificate... Thank you for your help.

  • How to Run files and open folders as an administrater 11.10

When it opens, run the commands below: enter code here sudo apt-get install nautilus-gksu After installing that application run copy and paste the line below and press enter. sudo cp /usr/lib/nautilus/extensions-2.0/libnautilus-gksu.so /usr/lib/nautilus/extensions-3.0/ Finally, log out and back in then go and test it, by clicking your right mouse click on the file you want to run as Admin and your see a popup menu with the words: open as administrater. Visit: http://www.liberiangeek.net/2011/12/add-open-as-administrator-to-nautilus-context-menu-in-ubuntu-11-10-oneiric-ocelot/ for help and from here. Enjoy!

  • Unable to change user password in Ubuntu 12.10

    - by Laphanga
The User Password is not changing for some reason. In the terminal it says password updated successfully, $ sudo passwd [sudo] password for zaigham: Enter new UNIX password: Retype new UNIX password: passwd: password updated successfully But when I try to log in using the new password it doesn't work. I have changed my password 2, 3 times now but still it's the same. Is that some kind of bug?

  • Unset the system immutable bit in Mac OS X

    - by skylarking
In theory I believe you can unlock and remove the system immutable bit with: chflags noschg /Path/To/File But how can you do this when you've set the bit as root? I have a file that is locked, and even running this command as root will not work as the operation is not permitted. I tried logging in as Single-User mode to no avail. I seem to remember that even though you are in as root you are in at level '1'. And to be able to remove the system-immutable flag you need to be logged in at level '0'. Does this have something to do with this issue?

  • Start tomcat webapp with root privileges

    - by Hagay Myr
I built a webapp that uses libpcap (via jpcap). In order to be able to get the network interfaces list or to bind to a network interface, the application (in this case a webaap that runs from tomcat server) must be running with root privileges. During development I simply ran Eclipse with root privileges (sudo eclipse) and my webapp worked just fine with Eclipse's local tomcat server. However, when I try to deploy my webapp to the "real" tomcat server, it isn't working. I Also tried to start the tomcat6 service with sudo and changed the TOMCAT6_USER definition (defined in /etc/init.d/tomcat6) from "tomcat6" to "root" but it made no difference. What should I do to make it work?

  • Why don't DNS root servers answer?

    - by JustTrying
If I try to query a root server with dig, I never receive an answer. For example the output for dig @b.root-servers.net www.ubuntu.com is ; << DiG 9.8.1-P1 << @b.root-servers.net www.ubuntu.com ; (1 server found) ;; global options: +cmd ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached But if I query other servers (the one of my ISP, or 8.8.8.8), they answer correctly. Why?

  • Set up a root server using Ubuntu and Virtualization

    - by Daniel Völkerts
Hello, I'd like to setup a fresh root server and install a linux based virtualization on it. My thoughts are on: Intel VTs Hardware Ubuntu 9.10 KVM based virt. The access to the root server will only be SSH for Administration. Has anybody done this before, what was your glues discovered in the daily use? My requirements are: very secure, so the root server only has ssh to the dom-0 and minimalistic ports for the guest (e.g. http/s). good monitoring of host/guest (my idea is to using zabbix for it) easy and fast administration (how are the command line tools working for you? cryptiv? high learning curve?) I'm pleased to learn from your suggestions. Regards, Daniel Völkerts

  • Redirecting requests for .html pages in subdirectories to the same page in root with .htaccess

    - by Asherion
I am porting a site from an old version of a CMS to a newer version which has different page addressing techniques. I'm unfortunately not very good with htaccess at all. URL/blog/sublblog/article.html is now simply URL/article.html Unfortunately, this will destroy any linking programs they have going, and break all the old links. I need a way to use .htaccess say: if request = /(any subdirectory)/(string).html then redirect to /(string).html If that makes any sense.

  • Successful su for user by root in /var/log/auth.log

    - by grs
I have this sorts of entries in my /var/log/auth.log: Apr 3 12:32:23 machine_name su[1521]: Successful su for user1 by root Apr 3 12:32:23 machine_name su[1654]: Successful su for user2 by root Apr 3 12:32:24 machine_name su[1772]: Successful su for user3 by root Situation: All users are real accounts in /etc/passwd; None of the users has its own crontab; All of those users are logged in the machine some time ago via SSH or No Machine - time varies from few minutes to few hours; no cron jobs are scheduled to run at that time, anacron is removed; I can see similar entries for other days and other times. The common part is the users are logged in when it appears. It does not appear during login, but some time afterwards. This machine has similar setup with few others but it is the only one where I see these entries. What causes them? Thanks
