  • Install Windows7 on drive with Ubuntu 12.04 already on. Is my plan good?

    - by John F
I have Ubuntu 12.04 working fine, but need W7 occasionally. I just wanted to check that my plan for installing would work? Any help appreciated. Current partitions are: Partition....@ File System @ Mount Point @ Size.....@ Used.....@ Flags /dev/sda1....@ ext4........@ /ext4a......@ 37 GiB...@ 776 MiB..@ boot /dev/sda2....@ extended....@.............@ 122 GiB..@ -........@ ./dev/sda5...@ ext4........@ / ..........@ 37 GiB...@ 6 GiB....@ .unallocated @ unallocated @.............@ 7 GiB....@ - ...... @ ./dev/sda6 ..@ ext4........@ /home.......@ 77 GiB...@ 32 GiB...@ .unallocated @ unallocated @.............@ 65 GiB...@ - .......@ /dev/sda3...@ linux-swap..@.............@ 7 GiB....@ - .......@ My plan is to: - boot to ubuntu from USB ISO - change sda1 to NTFS - install W7 to sda1 - use the "Master Boot Record repair" utility to configure dual boot so I can see my original ubuntu installation as well as W7. Have I missed something? I'm concerned as to what the 776MB is that will be overwritten by the change to NTFS. It seems large for just the MBR? Would also appreciate it if anyone can explain what sda5 and 6 are being used for? Is sda5 Ubuntu and sda6 my data? Thanks in advance.

  • How do I break down and plan a personal programming project?

    - by Pureferret
I've just started a programming job where I'm applying my 'How to code' knowledge to what I'm being taught of 'How to Program' (They are different!). As part of this, I've been taught how to capture requirements from clients before starting a new project. But... How do I do this for a nebulous personal project? I say nebulous, as I often find halfway through programming something, I want to expand what my program will do, or alter the result. Eventually, I'm tangled in code and have to restart. This can be frustrating and off-putting. Conversely, when given a fixed task and fixed requirements, it's much easier to dig in and get it done. At work I might be told "Today/This week you need to add XYZ to program 1" That is easy to do. At home (for fun) I want to make, say, a program that creates arbitrary lists. It's a very generic task. How do I start with that? I don't need it to do anything, but I want it to do something. So how do I plan a personal programming project? Related: What to plan before starting development on a project?

  • ECM (Niche Vs Mass Market)

    - by Luj Reyes
Hi Everyone, I recently started a little company with a couple of guys. Ours is the typical startup, a lot of ideas, dreams, talent and work hours :P. Our initial business plan was to develop a DM (Document Manager) with several features found on DropBox and other tools but with a big differentiator. Then we got in the team this Business Guy (I must say that several of us could be called 'Business Guys' but we are mainly hackers, he is just Another 'Networking Guy'), and along with him came this market analysis for a DM aimed at a very specific and narrow niche. We have many elements to believe in his market study and the idea is the classic "The market is X million, so if we grab a 10%...", and the market is really there to grab because all big providers deemed it too little and fled, let's say that the market is 5 million USD and demand very specific features. If we decide to go for this niche product we face a sales cycle of about 7 months, and the main goal of these revenue is to develop more ambitious projects. (Institutional VC is out of the question if you want to keep a marginal ownership of your company in my country). The only overlap between the niche and the mass market product features is the ability to store documents; everything else requires that we focus all of our efforts towards one or the other. I've studied a lot about the differences between Mass and Niche Markets, but I want to hear from people with actual experience. So everything comes down to this: If you have a really “saleable” idea what is the right thing to do: to go for the niche or go for the big prize and target primarily the mass market? Thanks for your input

  • SQL Server 2005: Internal Query Processor Error:

    - by Geetha
I am trying to execute this following procedure in SQL Server 2005. I was able to execute this in my development server and when i tried to use this in the Live Server I am getting an Error "Internal Query Processor Error: The query processor could not produce a query plan. For more information, contact Customer Support Services". am using the same Database and the same format. when we searched in the web it shows some fixes to be used in sql server 2005 to avoid this error but my DBA has confirmed that all the patches are updated in our server. can anyone give me some clue on this. • Beyond Chatting: What ‘Social’ Means for CRM

Steve then addressed the many applications for collaborative solutions in the area of Human Capital Management. So, in turning to a conversation about Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Sales Force Automation (SFA), let me ask you one simple question. How many sales people, particularly at business-to-business companies, consistently meet or beat their quotas in their roles by working alone, with no collaboration among fellow sales people, sales executives, employees in product groups, in service, in Legal, third-party partners, etc.? Hello? Is anybody out there? What’s that cricket noise I hear? That’s correct. Nobody! When it comes to Sales, introverts arguably have a distinct disadvantage. While it’s certainly a truism that “success” in most professional endeavors requires working with people, it’s a mandatory success factor in Sales. This fact became abundantly clear to me one early morning in the late 1990s when I joined the former Hyperion Solutions (now part of Oracle) and attended a Sales Award Ceremony. The Head of Sales at that time gave out dozens of awards – none of them to individuals and all of them to TEAMS of individuals. That’s how it works in Sales. Your colleagues help provide you with product intelligence and competitive intelligence. They help you build the best presentations, pitches, and proposals. They help you develop the most killer RFPs. They align you with the best product people to ensure you’re matching the best products for the opportunity and join you in critical meetings. They help knock the socks of your prospects in “bake off” demo’s. They bring in the best partners to either add complementary products to your opportunity or help you implement a solution. They work with you as a collective team. And so how is all this collaboration STILL typically done today? Through email. And yet we all silently or not so silently grimace about email. It’s relatively siloed. It’s painful to search. It’s difficult to align by topic. And it’s nearly impossible to re-trace meaningful and helpful conversations that occurred among a group or a team at some point in history. This is where social networking for Sales comes into play. It’s about PURPOSEFUL social networking versus chattering. What is purposeful social networking? It’s collaboration that’s built around opportunities, accounts, and contacts. It’s collaboration that delivers valuable context – on the target company, and on key competitors – just to name two examples. It’s collaboration that can scale to provide coaching for larger numbers of sales representatives, both for general purposes, and as we’ve largely discussed here, for specific ‘deals.’ And it’s collaboration that allows a team of people to collectively edit and iterate on a document like an RFP or a soon-to-be killer presentation that is maintained in a central repository, with no time wasted searching for it or worrying about version control. But lest we get carried away, let’s remember that collaboration “happens” among sales people whether there is specialized software to support it or not. The human practice of sales has not changed much in the last 80 to 90 years. Collaboration has been a mainstay during this entire time. But what social networking in general, and Oracle Social Networking in particular delivers, is the opportunity for sales teams to dramatically increase their effectiveness and efficiency – to identify and close more high quality and lucrative opportunities more quickly. For most sales organizations, this is how the game is won. • Geek City: What gets logged for SELECT INTO operations?

    - by Kalen Delaney
Last week, I wrote about logging for index rebuild operations. I wanted to publish the result of that testing as soon as I could, because that dealt with a specific question I was trying to answer. However, I actually started out my testing by looking at the logging that was done for a different operation, and ending up generating some new questions for myself. Before I starting testing the index rebuilds, I thought I would just get warmed up by observing the logging for SELECT INTO. I thought I...(read more)

  • Geek City: What gets logged for index rebuild operations?

    - by Kalen Delaney
This blog post was inspired by a question from a future student. Someone who was already booked for my SQL Server Internals class in June asked for some information on a current problem he was having with transaction log writes causing excessive wait times during index rebuild operations when run in ONLINE mode. He wanted to know if switching to BULK_LOGGED recovery could help. I knew the difference between ALTER INDEX in FULL vs BULK_LOGGED recovery when doing normal OFFLINE rebuilds, but I wasn't...(read more)

  • How to plan a PHP based project with DB involved in the below scenario? [closed]

    - by San
I'm starting a project on web monitoring where other websites can be monitored. Recently, I have found codeIgniter, yii, kohana frameworks online, but I'm confused as to whether to choose any of those or start directly. Moreover, this is my first big project that I'm planning for. So can anyone give me suggestions on how to start, how to plan, what books to refer to, to start this kind of web application and share some links to understand for myself on how to work on this project?

  • After rewrite Model sales/order_collection it works except in Admin section, why?

    - by latvian
Hi, I rewrite the sales/order_collection Model or, perhaps, correctly said the Resource. I did that to add filter that filters orders by store_ids. Please see my post to see how i did it http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2426986/how-to-rewrite-collection My new model works and here is how i tested $path = '../magento'; require_once('app/Mage.php'); umask(0); $app = Mage::app('base','website'); $col = Mage::getResourceModel('sales/order_collection')->addAttributeToSelect('*'); echo "<br>Size of the colletion: ".$col->getSize(); This new Model filters and returns # of orders just like i want. It returns # of orders also when i run it inside any of my created modules, but not in Admin section then it returns 0 orders In Admin section the same line is called as above ( Mage::getResourceModel('sales/order_collection')-addA....) from Mage_Adminhtml_Block_Sales_Order_Grid class (line 50) . It can be initiated when going Admin-Sales-Orders. However, it is returning 0 orders instead of # of orders How is it that the new Model returns orders anywhere else but from Admin section? What is done differently in Admin section?..please help. I have spent hours and hours and any pointers will help Thank you, Margots

  • What to look for in a free hosting plan? [duplicate]

    - by Jon
This question already has an answer here: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? 5 answers I have a test website that's hosted on a free plan by Zymic. At the moment I'm typing, it and my site is down. I don't want to let my clients down in the future. It's been down for over 2 days. I thought it was a coding problem at first, and then found out I couldn't connect to my server. Zymic had very good reviews, and its downtime was OK (not high or low), but now I want to change my web host. What should I look for (besides downtime guarantee)? Also, do you have any suggestions that with all the benefits? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

  • IS it ok to use REST for CRUD operations?

    - by l0l0l0l0l
Recently I moved to Laravel and I was surprised on how good setting the controllers as RESTful is, it made routes and my code cleaner. I'm kinda new on web development and never used REST before since all my clients' projects are basically CRUD operations. Are there any cool buzzword to this "approach" or I'm just stupid for doing it? I don't plan to follow any REST patterns, just to make my life easier and code cleaner. Basically just GET/POST, the other ones are not native anyway so (emulated on hidden form value).

  • Which tool to create a sitemap to plan a future site?

    - by peterpurzelbaum
I'd like to create a sitemap to plan a future site, and I'm looking for a tool to do it. I'd like to create a list of all articles first. Then a hierachy. Then I'd like to put the articles on several places in the hierachy. I should be able to put one article at different places. I'd like to have the ability to mark the articles in different colors whether they should come into the first version of the website or later.

  • More than 2gb of Music without paid plan possible?

    - by user8007
Hi there, I do not have a paid plan for UbuntuOne and do not intend of buying one, but I do like to buy music from the UbuntuOne Music Store. Is it possible to buy music, once I bought more than 2gb or would I have to move the music out of the UbuntuOne share? In this case, I would suggest to put the music in the official ubuntuone-folder instead of a hidden one. Non-technical users will not understand, why their shared music files are not in this folder, but others are popping up there (e.g. in the webinterface). Best Regards, Lars

  • Generating the query plan takes 5 minutes, the query itself runs in milliseconds. What's up?

    - by TheImirOfGroofunkistan
I have a fairly complex (or ugly depending on how you look at it) stored procedure running on SQL Server 2008. It bases a lot of the logic on a view that has a pk table and a fk table. The fk table is left joined to the pk table slightly more than 30 times (the fk table has a poor design - it uses name value pairs that I need to flatten out. Unfortunately, it's 3rd party and I cannot change it). Anyway, it had been running fine for weeks until I periodically noticed a run that would take 3-5 minutes. It turns out that this is the time it takes to generate the query plan. Once the query plan exists and is cached, the stored procedure itself runs very efficiently. Things run smoothly until there is a reason to regenerate and cache the query plan again. Has anyone seen this? Why does it take so long to generate the plan? Are there ways to make it come up with a plan faster?

  • One position right barrel shift using ALU Operators?

    - by Tomek
I was wondering if there was an efficient way to perform a shift right on an 8 bit binary value using only ALU Operators (NOT, OR, AND, XOR, ADD, SUB) Example: input: 00110101 output: 10011010 I have been able to implement a shift left by just adding the 8 bit binary value with itself since a shift left is equivalent to multiplying by 2. However, I can't think of a way to do this for shift right. The only method I have come up with so far is to just perform 7 left barrel shifts. Is this the only way?

  • Is is possible to use IOCP (or other API) in Reactor-style operations?

    - by Artyom
Hello, Is there any scalable Win32 API (like IOCP not like select) that gives you reactor style operations on sockets? AFAIK IOCP allows you to receive notification on completed operations like data read or written (proactor) but I'm looking for reactor style of operations: I need to get notification when the socket is readable or writable (reactor). Something similar to epoll, kqueue, /dev/poll ? Is there such API in Win32? If so where can I find a manual on it? Clearification: I need select like api for sockets that is as scalable as IOCP, or I'm looking for a way to use IOCP in reactor like operations.

  • What is your ratio Bug fixing vs Enhancements ?

    - by Newtopian
In the spirit of this question I wanted to have a sense of what is the proportion of time split between fixing bugs and implementing new features. If possible try to give an estimate for the product as a whole as opposed to individual developer stats and try to make an average over the course of a typical year. Do provide a general descriptive of the product/project to allow comparison. Specifically : Maturity of project Is it still actively developed or strictly in maintenance ? Size estimate of the product/project Size of team developing it (all inclusive) What is your team score on the Joel test. Ex : approx 80% time spent bug fixes 20% new stuff Mature software (20 years old) Actively developed 1.5M Line of Text, approx 700k - 900k LOC 12-15 actively coding in it. we got 5/12 for sure, some would say 7/12.

  • Why does adding Crossover to my Genetic Algorithm gives me worse results?

    - by MahlerFive
I have implemented a Genetic Algorithm to solve the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). When I use only mutation, I find better solutions than when I add in crossover. I know that normal crossover methods do not work for TSP, so I implemented both the Ordered Crossover and the PMX Crossover methods, and both suffer from bad results. Here are the other parameters I'm using: Mutation: Single Swap Mutation or Inverted Subsequence Mutation (as described by Tiendil here) with mutation rates tested between 1% and 25%. Selection: Roulette Wheel Selection Fitness function: 1 / distance of tour Population size: Tested 100, 200, 500, I also run the GA 5 times so that I have a variety of starting populations. Stop Condition: 2500 generations With the same dataset of 26 points, I usually get results of about 500-600 distance using purely mutation with high mutation rates. When adding crossover my results are usually in the 800 distance range. The other confusing thing is that I have also implemented a very simple Hill-Climbing algorithm to solve the problem and when I run that 1000 times (faster than running the GA 5 times) I get results around 410-450 distance, and I would expect to get better results using a GA. Any ideas as to why my GA performing worse when I add crossover? And why is it performing much worse than a simple Hill-Climb algorithm which should get stuck on local maxima as it has no way of exploring once it finds a local max?
