• Start Debugging in Visual Studio

  Every developer is familiar with hitting F5 and debugging their application, which starts their app with the Visual Studio debugger attached from the start (instead of attaching later). This is one way to achieve step 1 of the Live Debugging process. Hitting F5, F11, Ctrl+F10 and the other ways to start the process under the debugger is covered in this MSDN "How To". The way you configure the debugging experience, before you hit F5, is by selecting the "Project" and then the "Properties" menu (Alt+F7 on my keyboard bindings). Dependent on your project type there are different options, but if you browse to the Debug (or Debugging) node in the properties page you'll have a way to select local or remote machine debugging, what debug engines to use, command line arguments to use during debugging etc. Currently the .NET and C++ project systems are different, but one would hope that one day they would be unified to use the same mechanism and UI (I don't work on that product team so I have no knowledge of whether that is a goal or if it will ever happen). Personally I like the C++ one better, here is what it looks like (and it is described on this MSDN page): If you were following along in the "Attach to Process" blog post, the equivalent to the "Select Code Type" dialog is the "Debugger Type" dropdown: that is how you change the debug engine. Some of the debugger properties options appear on the standard toolbar in VS. • Start daemon after specific samba share is mounted

  I have a homebrew headless NAS running 12.04. In it I have a bunch of disks that are presented as a samba share thanks to Greyhole. If I want to do anything to the files within this share, I must do it through greyhole so that everything is updated properly. Thus, the share must be mounted locally and then accessed from there if I want to work on the files from the local machine. I do this mounting automatically thanks to these instructions. I also have Deluge installed that takes care of all my torrenting needs. Deluge's default download location is in this share, so that all the downloads are immediately available to the rest of the network. Obviously for everything to work, the share must be mounted, otherwise Deluge is going to have a problem downloading to it. The problem is, it seems like Deluge is starting before the shares are mounted when the system boots. So downloading/seeding does not continue automatically after boot. I have to log in and force a manual rescan and start on each torrent otherwise all the torrents just hangs on the error. Is there a way I can make deluge start after the shares got properly mounted? I looked into Upstart's emits functionality but I cannot seem to get it to work properly. Any advice?

• First time application where to start?

  After many years of searches and copy pasting, I'm still looking for simple solution that can transliterate text input on the fly from one key set to another. There are quite few online services that provide this feature but it still quite annoying to go online all the time. Unfortunately there is not that many applications left which are capable of doing so, and none of them supported by this day. I decided to make my own and at same time to learn something new for my self. The idea is quite simple: application should sit in system tray and wait until input language get changed, for example to Russian. If Russian language is activated, application should start to listen for user key strokes combination and replace them based on custom dictionary for example R = ?, SH = ? etc. I should be able to bind application to any installed language (Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Belarusian etc.) and customise dictionary for any of them. So my question is: Which language should I chose for this task C++, C# or might be something hardcore like Assembler, as application should work natively with Windows XP/Vista/7 or possibly Mac. (cross platform support is good but my main target is Windows) Due to nature of application behaviour how can I tell anti-virus software that it is not a "Key Logger" and basically not a virus? Where should I start and what should I be aware of? P.S. My current programming knowledge is quite basic, PHP and JavaScript with Object Oriented approach.

• VNC grey screen and start on boot 12.04

  I have 12.04 LTS installed and I am trying to get VNC to work. I want to be able to connect to existing sessions, and have it start on boot. I followed this guide and have left a comment to try and fix my problems but no dice. I have also tried all solutions I have found on google, including the one here, but I could not get it to work (I am missing something easy I am sure). When I connect to the VNC session I get a grey screen with three checkboxes: Accept clipboard from viewers Send clipboard to viewers Send primary selection to viewers Here is my xstartup: #!/bin/sh # Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop: unset SESSION_MANAGER # exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc gnome-session -session=gnome-classic & [ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup [ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources xsetroot -solid grey vncconfig -iconic & #x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" & #x-window-manager & I have also edited my to include: /usr/bin/vncserver -geometry 1024x768 It does not start on boot, but when I run the command it starts, but I get the grey screen. • A* Start path finding in HTML5 Canvas

  I'm trying implement A* Start path finding in my games(which are written with JavaScript, HTML5 Canvas). And with this library, I'm trying write a simple test, but stuck with one problem. I'm now done when in HTML5 canvas screen click with mouse show path until my mouse.x and mouse.y. • DHCP-server doesn't start at boot because of wrong startup order

  Apparently the isc-dhcp-server is started too early in the boot sequence, it states that it has nothing to do. If I just log directly in as root and start it using the init.d-script, it starts normally. My setup is basically an utterly standard router, with an eth0 on the inet side, and an eth1 on the lan side. However, I've defined a bridge instead of the eth1 for the lan-side. Thus, the lan-part of the network isn't up until the bridge is up. I currently believe that the dhcp server is brought up before the bridge is brought up, probably because the bridge is brought up with the 'networking' task, while the eth's are taken up with the 'network-interface' tasks - which are run earlier. (also, the bridge takes a small age to get up compared to the eth's). If I do take away the bridge config, instead using eth1 directly for the lan side, things work. (However, judging by syslog, things are still tight.) Ideas of how the get DHCP to start later? (The reason for the bridge, is to be able to use KVM with bridged networking..)

• Bizarre SSH Problem - It won't even start

  I recently got Ubuntu 12.04 Precise, got it up and running with some MediaWiki software, static IP on the box and router and was able to access the main page even from a cell phone. Everything seemed great... Then I wanted to finally get rid of the monitor and keyboard and login remotely via SSH. I installed openssh-server, let everything point to port 22 for a test run and installed putty on my Windows XP machine. I got a connection refused. Went back and started checking the Ubuntu install itself... (I'm under root from this point on) $ sudo -s $ service ssh status ssh stop/waiting $ service ssh start ssh start/running, process 2212 $ service ssh status ssh stop/waiting Apparently ssh has stopped or is waiting for something.... $ ssh localhost ssh: connect to host localhost port 22: Connection refused I can't even connect to myself... I checked ufw (firewall) to see if port 22 is doing alright... $ sudo ufw status Status: active To Action From 22 ALLOW Anywhere 22/tcp ALLOW Anywhere 22 ALLOW Anywhere (v6) 22/tcp ALLOW Anywhere (v6) sshd_config shows only Port 22 Is ssh not using the right IP address at all? I just don't get what I did wrong here. When this is up and running I will def change the port number, but for now, I don't want to mess with the default install too much until a test run with putty is successful. Edit: Here are my sshd_config file and my ssh_config file. The command /usr/sbin/sshd -p 22 -D -d -e returns: /etc/ssh/sshd_config line 159: Subsystem 'sftp' already defined. Edit: @phoibus moving the sshd_config file and reinstalling did the trick! service ssh status the above command shows that ssh is now running and I am now able to log in from my windows xp computer remotely via putty. Thanks so much! I can now use my monitor for other things!

• Where to Start?

  my name is Chase. I've been programming for over 3 years now and I've made very little progress towards game development. I blame myself for it due to reasons. I have experience in many languages such as C++, C#, and Java. I have a little bit of knowledge in JavaScript/HTML and Python. My question is where to start on actually understanding jumping into game development. Whenever I watch game development tutorials it mostly makes sense until points of things like OpenGL or advanced topics that make no sense at all. An example is something like glOrhho Matrix or whatever. Videos either don't explain things like this or they're not explained very well. Do I not know enough basics? I find myself always copying code from a video but understanding very little of it. It's like i'm memorizing things I don't understand which makes it hard to program at all. If I were to want to get to the point where I could write my own game engine or just a game by myself in general in C++ using at the most documentation how would I start at mastering to that level. Should I learn C first, or get really good at basics in general with C++. I know there is a similar posted question on this site but it's not the same due to the fact the person asking the question has a well knowledge level in programming. I'm stuck in a loop of learning the same things but if I go farther I don't understand. I'm stuck in the same spot and need to make progress.

• How to start WebLogic Server using default scripts?

  There are a few common issues reported when starting weblogic server using scripts. 1. User is not able to access weblogic console. 2. After a few days/hours weblogic server stops abruptly. 3. When user closes putty, they are not able to connect to weblogic server anymore. 4. When user closes windows command prompt, they are not able to connect to weblogic server anymore. 5. Weblogic is started using startManagedWebLogic.cmd/startManagedWebLogic.sh. By default, WebLogic Server does not run in background mode, so after you close the window the process finishes as well. In Linux/Unix based platforms, you need to use: nohup ./startManagedWebLogic.sh <Server> <URL> & In Windows platforms, you need to start Managed Servers using Windows Services: How to Install MS Windows Services For FMW 11g WebLogic Domain Admin and Managed Servers (Doc ID 1060058.1) http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/web.1111/e13708/winservice.htm There a few more reasons that could cause similar symptoms, like JVM crash, signals sent by the Operating System, and many other reasons.  But the above steps is the first one to start. • X won't start, root filesystem mounted read only

  I just experienced a very strange and puzzling problem on my machine that I can't seem to get sorted out. I was running Windows on a second partition, and everything was working great. I then went to restart into Linux, and noticed that X wouldn't start. Everything was displayed in super-low resolution, so I tried reinstalling my NVIDIA driver. I started seeing all of these I/O error problems, so I figured that my SSD was bad. After a bit more playing around, I ran fsck on the drive when mounted from a startup disk as well as badsectors and everything looked great. The SMART drive tests all passed and again, everything was looking good, so I rebooted again and still, no joy. I started then getting some weird USB errors, so I followed someone's advice and unplugged my computer's power supply, then started back up again and my graphics looked a lot better in the BIOS and in the boot logo, but X still wouldn't start. I then found out that my main boot drive was being mounted read-only for some reason. What's going wrong? I've done some pretty extensive tests on the SSD from a startup disk such as writing massive files, reading big files, running filesystem checks on the entire disk, and everything is looking great, until I try to boot. Whenever I try installing the drivers with apt-get, I get a ton of ata error messages looking like this: How can I diagnose what's going wrong and fix it so I can get back to work?

• Finding work as a college student

  I'm a 3rd year CS student. I'm currently really, really, bored and tired of cheap school programming(I go to a fairly respectable(albeit not top) university in my country, but, really, it's not MIT) so I've been thinking about getting a part-time dev job for a long while now. I'm not some hotshot programmer or anything, but "Add/Delete XYZ class objects to list" or "Do this web feature/pattern in PHP" does get old after a few semesters. I also only learned(heard?) of programming when I entered college, so the duration of me being in contact with any code is short. I can't really apply as an intern as I have not accumulated the necessary credits yet to do that so I was thinking of selling myself as a part-time dev. I still need to go to school, and don't want to subject myself to living two lives. Plus, I think I'd have better chances considering my lack of things to write on the resume. The only language I know at heart is C (I've written several pointer-oriented stuff on my freshman year, which is apparently pretty leet(for some reason), or so Joel says. That sort of boosted my morale a bit) but I've worked with several other languages only for the sake of course work such as C#/Java/PHP/ASM. My only user-worthy project was a recursive quicksort simulator I wrote for class using GTK+ that used a textbox to output the progress. I also have not taken the compiler theory class yet, or my thesis. All that being said, I wonder if any legitimate software company(big or small) would hire somebody like me considering all that. If there are companies that do accept anybody like me, would I be doing programming or maybe just be a tester or something? Would anybody hire me as a dev at all? I know I don't have much(not even a degree) but what I lack in experience, I compensate with interest? I am less interested in websites and 'management' software(no offense or anything. also, most of the places here ONLY have those), and more into 'process driven'(I'm not sure how to call it) and system software. I have my eyes on a startup that sells basically an extension of Google Drive, but I feel like I'm too 'risky' for them. Oh, I'm also 19 if that means anything. We're not K-12 so kids go to college earlier than in the US.

• How employable am I as a programmer?

  I'm currently a Ph.D. student in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in computational biology and am starting to think about what I want to do after graduate school. I feel like I've accumulated a lot of programming skills while in grad school, but taken a very non-traditional path to learning all this stuff. I'm wondering whether I would have an easy time getting hired as a programmer and could fall back on that if I can't find a good job directly in my field, and if so whether I would qualify for a more prestigious position than "code monkey". Things I Have Going For Me Approximately 4 years of experience programming as part of my research. I believe I have a solid enough grasp of the fundamentals that I could pick up new languages and technologies pretty fast, and could demonstrate this in an interview. Good math and statistics skills. An extensive portfolio of open source work (and the knowledge that working on these projects implies): I wrote a statistics library in D, mostly from scratch. I wrote a parallelism library (parallel map, reduce, foreach, task parallelism, pipelining, etc.) that is currently in review for adoption by the D standard library. I wrote a 2D plotting library for D against the GTK Cairo backend. I currently use it for most of the figures I make for my research. I've contributed several major performance optimizations to the D garbage collector. (Most of these were low-hanging fruit, but it still shows my knowledge of low-level issues like memory management, pointers and bit twiddling.) I've contributed lots of miscellaneous bug fixes to the D standard library and could show the change logs to prove it. (This demonstrates my ability read other people's code.) Things I Have Going Against Me Most of my programming experience is in D and Python. I have very little to virtually no experience in the more established, "enterprise-y" languages like Java, C# and C++, though I have learned a decent amount about these languages from small, one-off projects and discussions about language design in the D community. In general I have absolutely no knowledge of "enterprise-y" technlogies. I've never used a framework before, possibly because most reusable code for scientific work and for D tends to call itself a "library" instead. I have virtually no formal computer science/software engineering training. Almost all of my knowledge comes from talking to programming geek friends, reading blogs, forums, StackOverflow, etc. I have zero professional experience with the official title of "developer", "software engineer", or something similar.

  I'm in my mid twenties, and I'm in a safe, comfortable job as a Software Developer. The work environment is great, I'm well paid, the benefits are good. I enjoy my job. Some friends passed my name on to some guys starting a new company. I had some informal chats with them and they liked me. They've asked me to joint their start-up as tech lead, designing and building their product from scratch. They're fully funded, and they know what they're doing. Taking the job would require giving up my safe, enjoyable, relaxed job for a risky, stressful, hard one, albeit with the potential to be really great in future. Should I take the job?

As well of this I'm taught how to capture requirements from clients, so as to start a new project. How do I do this for a nebulous personal project? I say nebulous, as I often find halfway through programming something, I want to expand what my program will do, or alter the result. Eventually I'm tangled in code, and have to restart. This can be frustrating and off putting. Conversely when given a fixed task, and fixed requirements, it's much easier to programme from a - b. So how do I plan a personal programming project?

  There are some job requirements of project management experience for a programmer, such as: the candidate has to have some experience managing a project, not necessarily with subordinates, but rather having worked on a project all the way from design down to test. I was wondering what "subordinates" mean here? if there are some books, webpages or elsewhere with both general guideline and simple practical sample projects to help one get some basics about the whole process of a project. • Split large file, have arbitrary start index number

  I do a lot of file manipulation on my system and in one particular batch job I end up with around 16 Gb file. I need to prepare this data into smaller chunks for another process. I split it into 10k lines per file and numeric index, padded to 5 digits split -a 5 -d -l 10000 large_input_file /out_path/out. This way I end up with files named out.00000 out.00001 ... The problem is that this way indexing always starts with 0. Is there a way to set it to arbitrary starting index? man reveals nothing ...

• WMI Query Script as a Job

  I have two scripts. One calls the other with a list of servers as parameters. The second query is designed to execute a WMI query. When I run it manually, it does this perfectly. When I try to run it as a job it hangs forever and I have to remove it. I am trying to determine why this is, or at least a useful way to trap errors from within jobs. Thanks!

• Right Language for the Job

  Using the right language for the job is the key - this is the comment I read in SO and I also belive thats the right thing to do. Because of this we ended up using different languages for different parts of the project - like perl, VBA(Excel Macros), C# etc. We have three to four languages currently in use inside the project. Using the right language for the job has made it immensly more easy to do automate a job, but of late people are complaining that any new person who has to take over the project will have to learn so many different languages to get started. Also it is difficult to find such kind of person. Please note that this is a one to two person working on the project maximum at a given point of time. I would like to know if the method we are following is right or should we converge to single language and try to use it across all the job even though another language might be better suited for it. Your experenece related to this would also help. Languages used and their purpose: Perl - Processing large text file(log files) C# with Silverlight for web based reporting. LabVIEW for automation Excel macros for processing data in excel sheets, generating graphs and exporting to powerpoint.
