• Most appropriate diagram for GUI button design?

  What is the most appropriate diagram for GUI button design? Specifically, I have numerous buttons that will be changing color based on state information from operator input and input from various subcomponents and sensors. I would like to use UML or some other type of design diagrams to be able to capture the color transition. Some folks have suggested sequence diagrams, but I haven't been able to find any good examples that show how to incorporate this design artifact. I would really like to head in this direction to help developers. Thanks a ton for feedback and insights.

• Javascript frameworks for large development teams

  My company is reevaluating what kind of web framework we want to use. We are currently using the Ext 4.0 framework but there are questions being raised that it may not be the right framework to use. I like what Ext has to offer (rich GUIs, data package and class system) are there other frameworks out there that are similar? Are there frameworks out there tailored to medium/large software companies? Info: Potentially 100's of developers converting thick client screens to the web. Data modeling is important and well as rich GUI support. Maintainability and uniformity across multiple products important as well. Any info is greatly appreciated.

• Quadrant for SQL Server 2008, not earlier versions

  I had forgotten that you can use SQL Server Modeling’s awesome Quadrant tool only with SQL Server 2008, not earlier versions of SQL Server. I tried to connect to a remotely hosted database today and kept getting this error message when trying to open tables: I searched and searched for information on "Quadrant" plus this error and only came up with two results that were from 2008. I looked at the FAQs and saw nothing about version support. I know it’s written down somewhere...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • How to learn to translate real world problems to code?

  I'm kind of a beginner to Java and OOP and I didn't quite get the whole concept of seeing a real world problem and translating it to classes and code. For example, I was reading a book on UML and at the beginning the author takes the example of a tic tac toe game and says: "In this example, it's natural to see three classes: Board, Player and Position." Then, he creates the methods in each class and explains how they relate. What I can't understand is how he thought all this. So, where should I start to learn how to see a real world problem and then "translate" it into code?

  I am currently taking Business IT Foundation Degree course which involves SDLC and its my first year. I will be going out in the industry for the second year and I would just like to know some facts before launching out. I have been asked to create a system to enable the company to manage their staff and also to create a windows based system where users can register, view their details and so on. I am required to create: Several UML use case diagrams A conceptual class Diagram Test cases and test logs These have to been done for the windows based system. My concern is that I am not sure what a windows based system is and secondly I am having difficulties creating the diagrams as I am not familiar with them. Could anyone be kind enough to explain what they are and how I go about doing them please? Thank you.

• Intersection of player and mesh

  I have a 3D scene, and a player that can move about in it. In a time-step the player can move from point A to point B. The player should follow the terrain height but slow going up cliffs and then fall back, or stop when jumping and hitting a wall and so on. In my first prototype I determine the Y at the player's centre's X,Z by intersecting a ray with every triangle in the scene. I am not checking their path, but rather just sampling their end-point for each tick. Despite this being Javascript, it works acceptably performance-wise. However, because I am modeling the player as a single point, the player can position themselves so that they are half-in a cliff face and so on. I need to model them as as a solid e.g. some cluster of spheres or a even their fuller mesh. I am also concerned that if they were moving faster they might miss the test altogether. How should I solve this?

  Where can I find a collection of 10-100 3D scenes with photorealistic levels of detail? For example, the scene rendered here contains photorealistic detail. Note I want the underlying object models, textures, etc, not final renderings. I'll be using these scenes to test a computer vision idea. BTW, this is a reposting of this question. I wasn't able to find a Stack Exchange site that is perfectly suited to the question, but as this is a modeling and rendering question, I'm hoping it is a good enough match for the venue.

  There are a lot of great explanations for what the Model-View-Controller design pattern is, but I am having trouble finding good resources showing how to use it in practice. So, when you are starting a new application (doesn't matter what it is), what is in your toolbox? For example, it was suggested that using UML collaboration diagrams ( http://www.objectmentor.com/resources/articles/umlCollaborationDiagrams.pdf ) can be useful when designing an application around MVC, although, I am not certain exactly how or why this might be the case...? • How can I figure out if programming is right for me? [closed]

  I have an IT background and was pretty confident until an opportunity came up at work to go into programming(C#). I have never programmed before this, and the software I am programming for is a program I have never used before (a 3D modeling software). It has been 6 months since then and I feel like giving up. I didn't get much training... about 3 weeks of training spread out over the last 6 months. I think I would be good at programming but this experience is kinda making me rethink my decision. I'm not sure if it's just me, or if this frustration is normal. How can I tell if programming is right for me?

• How is this paradigm/style called?

  I have the following situation: I'm developing an add-in for a UML modeling tool. The models that can be created by the user are stored inside the main application and a limited access to the models is given through its API. However, the add-in has a lot of callbacks for events that are triggered by the main application, when changes to the model occur by the user. Since the models are already stored once in the main application, I considered it not practicable to duplicate the models in the add-in, which leads to the fact that I have only behavior in the add-in, rather than having a state. This behavior is mainly expressed by static functions, that are organized in functional cohesive classes. The callbacks for the events have always references to the model elements relevant for the specifc event that ocurred. First, it seemed to me that this is a procedural style in general, but procedural style doesn't consider events/callbacks, so this boils down to the question. How is this programming style called?

  Hello, I have a latex document, which works fine but when ever I try to add in an image with a figure caption it gives me an error saying there are to many }'s. \begin{figure}[h!] \caption{A picture of a gull.} \includegraphics[width=0.5\textwidth]{uml-usecase/overview.png} \end{figure} As far as I can see its right, can anyone figure out where I am going wrong? • haml with rails3 (git master) and devise: form_for syntax change breaks haml -- suggestions?

  i am trying to get haml working with a rails3 project; since i am quite far in the modeling i wanted to go to the haml views now -- seems that the current haml (git master) does not work together with the current rails3 git master because of some syntax changes in rails3 form_for does anyone have more information on the syntax changes? is there a temporary workaround to use haml with rails3?   I have c# application which write files to sqlite database. It uses entity fraemwork for modeling data. Write file to blob (entity byte[] varible) with this line: row.file = System.IO.File.ReadAllBytes(file_to_load.FileName); //row.file is type byte[] //row is entity class table All work correctly when files size is less. When size more 300Mb app throw exception: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown. How I can write to blob direct, without memory varibles?

  Is there anything non-RESTful about providing parameters to a HTTP DELETE request? My scenario is that I'm modeling the "Are you sure you want to delete that?" scenario and eventually I end up having to pass a parameter to the delete request with "?force_delete=true" e.g. DELETE http://server/resource/id?force_delete=true If the user does not specify force_delete then I'm returning 409 Conflict - is that correct?

Worse, many of those books are outdated. I'm looking for an up-to-date book that teaches technologies like RDF, SPARQL, RDFS, and GDDRL- and frameworks to make use of them. Any recommendations?

• Extended Django base-class with multiple instances

  I'm modeling a simple movie database using Django. models.py defines a base model Person. I extend Person into Actor and Director, which works as I imagined. Persons must be unique. When (in the Admin) I create an instance of Actor, and this person is also a Director, it won't save because of the unique = True. Any ideas how to solve this problem? (generic foreign keys?) Thx

  We (developement team 4 upto 7 people) use Sparxsystems EA for requirement analysis, modeling etc. Do you know any well-working methods to use EA and some task/issue tracking system like Redmine/Mantis/Trac ? The problem is not to duplicate functionality (there are issues/tasks/changes in Redmine and EA) but to have some user friendly interface (preffered web) to manage tasks and issues.
