• Putting our OLTP and OLAP services on the same cluster

  We're currently in a bit of a debate about what to do with our scattered SQL environment. We are setting up a cluster for our data warehouses for sure and are now in the process of deciding if our OLTP databases should go on the same one. The cluster will be active/active with database services running on one node and reporting and analytical services on the other node. From a technical standpoint I don't see an issue here. With the services being run on different nodes they shouldn't compete too heavily for resources. The only physical resource that may be an issue would be the shared disk space. Our environment is also quite small. Our biggest OLAP database at the moment is only about 40GB and our OLTP are all under 10GB. I see a potential political issue here as different groups are involved but I'm just strictly wondering if there would be any major technical issues that could arise from this setup.

• Best practice for scaling a single application source to multiple nodes

  I have an application which needs to scale horizontally to cover web and service nodes (at the moment they're all on one) but interact with the same set of databases and source files (both application code and custom assets). Database is no problem, it's handled already with replication in MongoDB. Also, the configuration of the servers are the same (100% linux). This question is literally about sharing a filesystem between machines so that its content is always correct, regardless of the node accessing it. My two thoughts have so far been NFS and SAN - SAN being prohibitively expensive and NFS seeing some performance issues on the second node with regards to glob()ing in PHP. Does anyone have recommended strategies or other techniques that don't involved sharding data across nodes or any potential gotchas in NFS that may cause slow disk seek times? To give you an idea of the scale, the main node initialises it's application modules in ~ 0.01 seconds. The secondary is taking ~2.2 seconds. They're VM's inside a local virtual network in ESXi and ping time between them is ~0.3ms

• Login authentication vanished from MongoDB install

  A few months ago I enabled password protection on my MongoDB install. Today I ran the Mongo client and forgot to use my login details. Instead of rejecting nearly everything I try to do from the shell, like it should, I had complete access to all the databases and collections. Fortunately this instance is only running a few test apps, so I quickly shutdown the MongoD instance until I figure this out. Has anybody ever seen this kind of behavior before and knows what is going on? The MongoD instance is running on a Linux VM hosted by Azure. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps Azure restored an old copy of the VM, but I received no E-mails to that effect and everything else on the server seems to be proper, including new daemon processes that I added after I enabled password protection on MongoD.

• Mirroring MySQL server with diffrent configuration

  I have to migrate MySQL server to a different data centre so I would like to create another MySQL slave server in new DC and then promote it to a master later on. I previously used LVM snapshots and Percona Xtrabackup for this purpose but this time I've optimized MySQL configuration file that prevents me from using these methods. Old server (backup): innodb_log_file_size = 256M innodb_log_files_in_group = 3 New server (restore): innodb_log_file_size = 512M innodb_log_files_in_group = 2 The Xtrabackup script and LVM snapshots copy the whole directory structure so the MySQL server won't start because there is a different size for InnoDB logs. Is there any solution to avoid a downtime in this case? I can't use mysqldumps as there is around 8000 databases so I would have to take the server down for a couple of hours. I was also thinking to use the old settings with Xtrabackup and then change it once the new server is promoted to a master - less downtime but I'm not sure if this will work? Thank you Regards

• Optimal Disk Setup for OLTP SQL Server

  We have a high transaction (lots of reads and writes) database server (running SQL 2005) that is currently set up with a RAID 1 OS partition (C:) and a RAID 5 data/log/tempdb partition (D:). The C: has 2 drives and the D: has 4 drives. The server has around 300 databases ranging from 10MB to 2GB in size. I have been reading up on best practices for partioning the disks, but would like some opinions on our setup since we are so limited in the number of disks. It seems like RAID 10 is popular, but I dont think we could use it with only 6 total disks to work with. Thanks.   I have a SQL Server 2008 instance. I have configured filestream access properly, and use it from one column on one table in one of my databases. However, I cannot access the UNC share for the filestream data. I have tried browsing to it as well as trying to open specific files and I get errors both ways. I am running SQL Server 2008 enterprise on a Windows 7 workstation running on the domain. I've tried running the sql server service as a local user, then as network admin. The user I am logged in as is a local admin and a sysadmin in SQL server.

• Shared storage solution for our sql server backups

  We have 3 clustered sql servers. We have 5+ multi terrabyte databases and their backup files (compressed using quest litespeed) are hitting over 600gb each, We are required to keep at least a week or two weeks (if we can) of weekly full backups and then 6 days differential backups, and a week or 2 weeks worth of log backups local. We are currently limited to 2TB volumes from our san team, we can have multiple volumes but they are expensive ($200 per raw TB per month) and having to deal with many backup volumes instead of a single big volume is difficult. I think if we could have a shared network storage of 20TB+ raid 10 or so for all our servers for keeping the backups and another department will copy them to tape from the network storage and delete files according to the retention period would be good, if this box would be a build in operating system (even unix a complete file storage system) that would be good. What do you guys think, does this make sense to you, is there any manufacturer that sells a storage product like that which that work in a clustered environment? Thank you

  I have a database of many (though relatively short) HTML documents. I want users to be able to search this database by entering one or more search words in a C++ desktop application. Hence, I’m looking for a fast full-text search solution. Ideally, it should: Skip common words, such as the, of, and, etc. Support stemming, i.e. search for run also finds documents containing runner, running and ran. Be able to update its index in the background as new documents are added to the database. Be able to provide search word suggestions (like Google Suggest) To illustrate, assume the database has just two documents: Document 1: This is a test of text search. Document 2: Testing is fun. The following words should be in the index: fun, search, test, testing, text. If the user types t in the search box, I want the application to be able to suggest test, testing and text (Ideally, the application should be able to query the search engine for the 10 most common search words starting with t). A search for testing should return both documents. Can you suggest a C or C++ based solution? (I’ve briefly reviewed CLucene and Xapian, but I’m not sure if either will address my needs, especially querying the search word indexes for the suggest feature).

• Cannot Login To phpMyAdmin

  I'm running a simple LAMP server at home from which I host a personal blog. The server is running Arch Linux, with the latest-and-greatest versions of Apache, MySQL, and PHP. In order to easily maintain the databases, I installed phpMyAdmin. However, I cannot login. If I were to SSH into the server and run mysql -u <user> -p <password>, no errors show up and I'm immediately placed into the MySQL prompt. No problem. However, when I try to log in with phpMyAdmin, using those exact same credentials, nothing happens. No errors, no nothing, I'm just redirected back to the login page. Did I do something wrong? The objective is something akin to "laying of hands" on several database servers which work in concert to provide data to various Web, Client-Server and Tablet-Sync'd distributed Client-Server programs. More specifically, I've been asked to come up with a "Maintenance Plan" which includes recommendations for future work to improve these machines' performance/reliability/security/etc. Might there be some good articles on teh interwebs ya'll could point me towards which would give me some good basis to start? Articles describing "These are the top 4 overarching categories and this is how you should proceed when drilling down on each of them" sort-of-thing would be fabulous. The Databases are all SQL 2005, however the compatibility level is 80 and they were originally created with ERwin based on SQL 6.5. The OSs are all Windows Server 2003. Thanks all! Tim

• Trying to use jquery ui in google chrome extension in the content level

  The problem is that the scope of the content script is on the web page that your plugin is suppose to be used at.   I was discussing this with some coworkers, they would like a wiki, but are turned off by the need to constantly [browse] and [upload] files. They like the functionality of Lotus Notes that they can copy & paste screenshots (or crops etc) directly into Notes databases / libraries. But they are not fans of Lotus notes behond that (performance, etc,) Anyone work with a free (open source hopefully) wiki of documenting application that just allows copy & paste of text & image content? Would be great to have one internally installed that we could use for documentation without constantly uploading/attaching files. Not sure if I am asking for functionality that is not available in a browser.

• Accessing jQuery objects in the module pattern

  Hello, Really getting in to javascript and looking around at some patterns. One I have come accross is the module pattern. Its seems like a nice way to think of chucks of functionality so I went ahead and tried to implement it with jQuery. I ran in to a snag though. These both use jQuery methods. The problem is that the .html() method works fine however i can not add the class. No errors result and the class does not get added. What is happening here? • Shared volume for data (multiple MDF) and another shared volume for logs (multiple LDF)

  I have 3 instances of SQL Server 2008, each on different machines with multiple databases on each instance. I have 2 separate LUNS on my SAN for MDF and LDF files. The NDX and TempDB files run on the local drive on each machine. Is it O.K. for the 3 instances to share a same volume for the data files and another volume for the log files? I don't have thin provisioning on the SAN so I would like to not constaint disk space creating multiple volumes because I was adviced that I should create a volume (drive letter) for each instance, if not for each database. I am aware that I should split my logs and data files at least. No instance would share the actual database files, just the space on drive. Any help is appretiated.

• How can I VPN into a domain and act as if it is local?

  I've looked and looked and the internet seems to have finally failed me, there's no information on my specific issue. I have two locations, and one server (sbs 2008); I need them to act like one physical LAN. I know it's possible, I just know how to set it up, or anything about VPNs, etc. So, just to clarify a bit more: 1 Small Business Server 2008 ~30 Computers with varying systems from Windows XP to 7 2 Physical Locations I use redirected folders, but since that would consume a lot of bandwith over VPN, I have a machine over there that can be the workhorse for storage. Users need to access e-mail and shared databases from this server (or possibly some form of DFS with aforementioned workhorse) from the other building. Is there a nice tutorial (or I nice person that wants to write it) online that can explain how to set up computers from an external network to act like they were in the LAN?

I need to open it right from the beginning in the bookmarklet code, and to access it later when needed.
